We Said

Peter Beardsley told the official website:

"To be fair, I think the pitch helped us today. Iím not blaming Darlington, but the pitch was poor on Monday. Today, it was really good. It was smooth, slick, and the bit of rain before kick-off helped because of what we like to do Ė we like to pass the ball and move, and I thought some of the football was really, really good.

"This is what we live for Ė watching the players on the pitch is the best part of the job. Neil Aspin was very complementary. With all due respect, though, weíre looking for different things. Weíre looking for individuals who can go in the first team Ė whether thatís tomorrow or a year from now. It is what we do.

"As I say, in an ideal world, you want to win, but itís not the be all and end all. We donít have to win every game Ė itís more about how we play. And as you saw, we played well today.

On Victor Fernandez:

"Physically, he looks a different shape and size, but the big thing he needs to know is when and where to dribble. We didnít have a go at him, but Ė basically Ė he scored an unbelievable goal, and then tried to nutmeg somebody just outside our box. So, there are things that he has to learn, but heís that type of player. Thereís a time and a place, as we told him, but that takes nothing away from the goal.

"He didnít train with us at all this week. He only flew into Manchester last night, and then he came back to the North East with the other senior players Ė Jamie Sterry, Matt Ritchie, etcetera. We didnít see him until quarter-to-twelve. But, Iím not complaining, because we know Victor well, and we know heís a good kid.Ē

Goals from Yasin Ben El-Mhanni, Victor Fernandez and Dan Ward propelled Newcastle's second string to their second pre-season victory on Saturday.

After striker Ivan Toney had been denied by a goal line clearance in the early stages, El-Mhanni opened the scoring on 11 minutes after good work by Fernandez. The 19 year-old Spaniard then made it 2-0 a minute before half-time with a fine finish that was applauded by both sets of fans.

Substitute Dan Ward then added a third just before the hour as he found space in the box before stylishly slotting past substitute goalkeeper Dan Hanford at the north end of the ground.

The Tynesiders did threaten a consolation effort when Wes York set up Jordan Burrow with five minutes left, but he struck the frame of the Newcastle goal.

PS: Gateshead's ex NUFC contingent is now reduced to just one: former Magpie reserve midfielder Paddy McLaughlin, who appeared for the first 65 minutes.
