Newcastle's U23 side recorded a third successive home victory on Wednesday, having hastily relocated from a waterlogged Whitley Park to a slightly less soggy pitch at nearby Little Benton.

Beaten 3-4 on Tyneside by Burnley in their opening Premier League Cup group stage game in September, United found themselves in another goal spree - but convincingly saw off reigning Cup holders Swansea City.

And having endured a barren night in front of goal against Reading in our most recent home fixture, striker Tom Heardman spectacularly rediscovered his goal touch, netting four times in less than half an hour.

The Magpies included Jack Colback, Henri Saivet and Massadio Haidara in their starting lineup and took the lead in the eleventh minute when City 'keeper Lewis Thomas blocked a shot by Victor Fernandez - only for Colback to convert the rebound via a deflection.

1-0 then became 2-0 within a minute after Colback charged forward and Callum Roberts took a short pass from Dan Barlaser before shooting in off the post.

Tom's first sight of goal saw him strike the bar on 16 minutes, before the less experienced visitors halved the arrears ten minutes later, Liam Cullen beating Paul Woolston.

Heardman's first came three minutes before the interval with another deflected effort and Fernandez then teed him up to repeat the feat on half time.

And the number nine claimed a hat-trick in the 58th minute when Fernandez's first shot was saved and Heardman tucked in the rebound.

Cullen's second of the game six minutes later made it 5-2 before Heardman converted his fourth goal in the 70th minute, Barlaser claiming another assist.

But the Swans weren't finished and Adnan Maric got their third from close in with nine minutes remaining.

Newcastle reach the halfway point in their Group D fixtures on Monday when they face Colchester United U23s at their Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The 32 team tournament begins with a group stage consisting of eight groups of four, each team playing the other three teams in their group home and away.

Eight group winners and eight runners-up will then progress to the knockout stages.
