One side effect of United's continuing involvement in the Intertoto cup has been the blooding of a new generation of toon youngsters in the reserve team.

Already this season in their five games against a variety of non-league and
Scottish sides, coach Tommy Craig has thrown in no less than sixteen lads
who competed at Academy level last May.

In defence alongside the rotting corpse of Marcelino have come a number of raw youngsters. They haven't been overawed. Neither have the lads struggled to cope with the unfamiliar surroundings of Berwick and Ashington - one more positive gain from playing youth games at St.James' Park.

Catching the eye already have been the prolific strikers Richard Offiong and Michael Chopra, but others such as David Cowan have shown good touches.

Being reminded of where they may end up if they don't win pro contracts
also won't do them any harm....
