In this week of romance and rampant commercialism, there was precious little brotherly love in evidence when the reserve team played their own derby match on Wearside last Monday night.

The 9,000 crowd at the Stadium of Light saw Newcastle claim their first-ever victory at that venue in any level, in their sixth attempt with a 2-0 victory.

In front of a delighted away contingent of 600 Magpies, second half goals from McMenamin and Cort settled matters.

For apprentice mackem knackers here was a chance to sing rude songs passed down from past generations, trying to impress a succession of overdressed, bored-looking lasses in the process.

For police and stewards too, a chance to brush up on those vital skills of
over-reaction, premature ejections and looking stern in a gaudy yellow coat.

The real derby promises to be a more highly-charged affair, but we'll be
happy to settle for the same scoreline.
