We Said

Tommy Craig commented:

"Carl Cort did very well for us and Michael Chopra was strong too. They both looked a threat for us and Michael almost opened the scoring. You could see in their play they'd come back from Leverkusen on a high.

"On another night they could've easily had a goal apiece.

"It could've gone either way. I felt they shaded the first half and we were the better team in the second. There were chances at both ends for both teams and it was a keenly-contested and very competitive game.

"Probably in the end it was a fair result for both teams. They had a strong team out and put us under a lot of pressure in the end and Tony Caig did very well.

"Apart from Tony and Carl Cort it was a predominantly young team and I was much more pleased with the attitude last night than I was after the Sunderland game last week.

"It was a competitive and rugged game and I was relatively pleased with the point."

A young toon Reserves side left Belle Vue with a hard -earned point as they held Leeds to a goalless draw on Thursday night.

Of the 16 man squad selected by Tommy Craig, only Cort cost the club a transfer fee and only the striker and new free transfer keeper Tony Caig hadn't played for a toon junior team at some stage.

There wasn't much to choose between the sides at the break with Leeds having the best chance on 40 minutes after Johnson beat  Ramage and found McMaster in the clear 15 yards only for a relieved Caig to gather the mis-hit shot.

At the other end, Cort was looking lively and Chopra (pictured) had one shot blocked and another just over, although Nigel Martyn wasn't tested in the first 45 minutes.

Nick Barmby made another appearance as he recovered from injury and played 45 minutes - it remains to be seen whether he features at Elland Road on Saturday. No sign of toon old boy David Batty though.

Barmby was replaced at the interval by Harpal Singh (aka the Yorkshire Michael Chopra) who caused us some problems with his pace in the second half.

After a slow start to proceedings, Chopra's running allowed Andy Ferrell to try an ambitious lob after 53 minutes but his 25 yard effort dropped just wide with a relieved Nigel Martyn stranded on the edge of his area.

In the final twenty minutes of the match our best chance of a goal looked to come from Chopra, who looked increasingly lively and got a few shots in on goal.

Late pressure from Leeds almost saw them snatch what would have been a barely-deserved win at the death, forcing five corners in the dying moments.

However Caig was equal to the test, doing well to punch out a couple and tip one over, as we thankfully halted a run of three consecutive defeats. It was also our first point against Leeds at this level in the last seven attempts.

First reserve league starts for Damon Robson in midfield and debuts for Chris Carr in defence and left back Paul Dunn.

England midfielder Ross Gardner made his second consecutive appearance on the bench as an unused sub, but Chris Moore came on to make his debut at this level.
