We Said

Tommy Craig said:

"Our first goal against Wolves was a good finish by Carl from a great cross from Alan.

"Alan really should have been at Helsinki for the World Athletics Championships last week, because of the pace he has. He was electrifying.

"That's six goals he's had a hand in so far this season, including our friendly at Hartlepool and he's doing it in similar fashion each time.

"He's knocking the ball past the full-back, getting to the byline and cutting it across. That's the thing football supporters love to see.

"I know the players sometimes think I am never happy, but I thought we made heavy weather of it by giving the ball away too often.

"At 2-0 up I expect us to pass it better and I'm looking for us to kill the game off. At 2-0 we are comfortable, so it's tinged with a little bit of disappointment as we've not played as well as we can.

"Having said that, the lads dug in deep for the result. It was a long way down to Telford, five-and-a-half hours on the coach, and they've put a real shift in.

"We are better than we showed on the night but I'm still delighted with the start to the season."

Waffle

Having scored in the final two games of last season and the first one of this, Carl Finnigan took less than two minutes to strike again for Newcastle reserves on Tuesday evening against Wolves.

Latching on to a cross from winger Alan O'Brien (who was perhaps miffed at not being in the Ireland U21 side tonight), the young striker netted past Stefan Postma in the Wolves goal.

That was hardly the best start for the Villa 'keeper, who was being trialed with a view to a loan signing and Postma was beaten again 15 minutes later as we doubled our lead.

Charles N'Zogbia put the disappointment of conceding a penalty against Arsenal behind him, curling his shot home from the edge of the box.

And although Wolves got one back before the break through Leon Clarke, United held out and successfully fought a rearguard action in the second 45 to claim a hard-earned three points.
