We Said

Tommy Craig said:

"We took full advantage of their lapse in defence and defended well at the end to keep the score at 2-1.

"I am delighted. It's one of the most satisfying performances I've had for some time given the fact we had to come back from behind against a good team. quot; They are always tight games against Liverpool but they are always good games that are worth watching.

"I never thank my players for trying hard, for obvious reasons, but I was happy about the way they went about their business against Liverpool.

"I am really, really pleased, I told them I was proud afterwards."

They Said

Coach Hughie McAuley said:

"I thought we looked the more dangerous team on the night so to lose the game to a mistake was disappointing. We had the situation under control then we lose concentration and they scored the winner but that's football sometimes.

"We had some good opportunities to score goals but it was a very cold night with a swirling wind and both teams found it difficult to play consistently good football.

"It was a battle out there and unfortunately when David Mannix was stretchered off we lost our shape. David will have an scan so it's a case of fingers crossed to see how he is."

Newcastle reserves extended their season-long unbeaten home record on Monday night, but had to rely on their guests to lay on a late winner for them.

Trailing to a Neil Mellor effort after 12 minutes, a young Magpies side quickly went in search of an equaliser and it was striker Carl Finnigan who levelled just after the half hour with a well-taken shot.

The goal came with the run of play and was reward for Finnigan, who had seen a goalbound shot blocked on 14 minutes and just failed to connect with a diving header two minutes later.

However, United were thankful for the alertness of 'keeper Tim Krul just before the break, as he denied Mellor a second goal and then reacted to save a follow-up effort from Paul Anderson.

Already without Chopra, Brittain and O'Brien after their first team appearances on Saturday, coach Tommy Craig was forced into a reshuffle at half-time when left back Phil Cave was replaced by Nicky Deverdics.

A less frenetic second half was partially overshadowed by an injury to visiting midfielder David Mannix.

He went in for a tackle with United's David Edgar on 62 minutes and although the Toon defender hobbled away, Mannix - who has already endured major knee surgery - wasn't so lucky, eventually being carried off on a stretcher.

With a fifth consecutive draw between the two sides looming, last week's goal hero Daryl Smylie tried to get in on the act on 78 minutes, but blasted over from a good position after Finnigan had pulled the ball back.

However, a winning goal duly arrived with seven minutes remaining and the unlikely scorer was Chris Farman aka "Crimbo", an 18 year-old from North Tyneside.

Playing tonight in left midfield but more usually a defender, he was in the right place when Reds defender David Raven attempted a backpass to his 'keeper from the edge of the area.

However, his over-hit effort left Paul Willis stranded off his line and although it lacked the strength to go in, Crimbo had the easiest of finishes into an empty net to claim his first goal of the season.

Liverpool redoubled their efforts to try and salvage a point, but a mixture of desperate defending and some close passing in the opposition half saw us through to the end of normal time and the measly three minutes added on by the referee.

That's now six wins this season at Kingston Park, with only Blackburn's late comeback for a 2-2 draw preventing a 100% home return.
