We Said

Tommy Craig told the official website:

"The good thing about the Ashington match was that we got a lot of good practice in passing, creating chances and ultimately converting those chances.

"It was good to see Carl Finnigan hit a hat-trick but everybody played their part.

"I always felt we would win the game. The danger is that when you get so far ahead you can get sloppy and slack but we didn't do that.

"I didn't want any fancy-dan carry on. The obvious quality told on the night and we should win games like this, but we kept at it from the beginning to the end.

"Credit to Ashington - they didn't lose their heads and get over-frustrated. Their players would have spent the day working before playing us and they were tiring but they never resorted to foul play.

"It was nice to see Craig Moore get 45 minutes. He came through fine and now it's a case of monitoring his progress.

"He's back into full-time training now. I would have liked to have given him another start but there are no reserve games for another fortnight so we'll arrange a full-scale practice match or two."

The returning Craig Moore commented:

"It was 45 minutes under my belt but I wasn't really tested.  However its one step in my comeback.

"In seven to 10 days I would hope to have my hand up asking to be in the first team squad. It's been a long time and you cannot control hamstring injuries, but all I can do is get out on that football park and show people what I can do.

"That's the enjoyable side of being a footballer - I would much rather be playing games than sitting in the treatment room."

Waffle

Tommy Craig's Reserves breezed into the next round of the Northumberland Senior Cup after dispatching Ashington 8-0 at Kingston Park on Thursday evening.

The scoring started after just six minutes when Martin Brittain crossed from the right and Carl Finnigan converted with a header from seven yards.

Twenty minutes later Alan O'Brien's shot was parried by Colliers 'keeper Andy Clark and Finnigan got his second from six yards.

Liam Atkin made it 3-0 in the 33rd minute when Kris Gates' short pass across the box was finished with a low 12 yard shot into the bottom left corner.

The goals continued to flow after the break with Daryl Smylie coming on for the returning Craig Moore - the Australian's first game since October.

Defender Phil Cave was next on the score sheet in the 52nd minute with a shot from the edge of the box to make it 4-0 - the pick of our goals.

A late flurry of goals then heaped further misery on the Northern League side, who had fashioned a couple of half-chances but failed to test Krul in the Magpies goal.

Atkin got his second with a shot on 77 minutes after Smylie's effort was blocked on the line.

Midifelder Matty Pattison then got in on the act in the six minutes later, tapping home a close- range rebound after Finnigan's shot was saved.

Having struck the woodwork for the second time in the evening just a few minutes earlier, Finnigan claimed his hat trick and our seventh with five minutes remaining.

Atkin's cross from the right caused problems in the Ashington six yard box and although Chris Farman's shot was blocked, Finnigan was on hand to bundle the loose ball home.

Smylie completed the rout two minutes from time with well-taken shot, having only recently returned from international duty with Northern Ireland's U21 side in Israel.

The small crowd included first team caretaker boss Glenn Roeder as well as Lee Clark, who joined reserve coach Tommy Craig in the home dugout.

To add insult to injury, the band of travelling Ashington fans fell foul of the strict stewarding at Kingston Park, being made to sit down and having a drum and an air horn confiscated for the duration of the game.

Some second half silliness then saw three fans ejected by police and stewards, something which prompted other Colliers sympathisers to leave the ground in protest.

All in all, totally avoidable.

Elsewhere in the Second Round, Blyth Spartans beat current holders Whitley Bay 2-0 a few weeks ago, while Bedlington Terriers needed extra time to defeat Alnwick Town 2-1 on Wednesday night.

The final match of the round, which sees West Allotment host Newcastle Benfield, has been scheduled for Wednesday 15th.
