We Said

Coach Tommy Craig said:

"There are no excuses and this was a similar story to the defeat against West Brom a few weeks ago when we conceded two goals in the early exchanges.

"You cannot do that against Aston Villa. They are one of the best teams in the league and they were always in control.

"They could have scored more but for the woodwork and our keeper, Fraser Forster.

"We had a word at half time but still didn't really trouble them and at 3-0 it was game over.

"Our form away from home has been disappointing this year. We are normally good for half-a-dozen wins on the road.

"The home form has been good and our final five games are at home, so we will be hoping to remain unbeaten."

Waffle

Euro flop Albert Luque lasted just thirteen minutes of a miserable night at The Bescot Stadium as Tommy Craig's Reserves ended their away campaign with a 3-0 defeat.

The nightmare for the £10.4m man continued in more ways than one after hobbling around following a hefty challenge. He seemed ready to return to the action but by this time, substitute Chris Farman was all ready to replace the Spaniard and the substitution was made before Luque had time to protest.

Judging by the number of the English expletives Luque then hurled in Tommy Craig's direction he was none too pleased about being replaced and marched off down the tunnel, followed by Craig.

By that time United were already two goals down after their porous defence had been breached twice in the opening seven minutes.

And they can count themselves slightly fortunate to have made it to half time without conceding further; Cave clearing a Mikaelsson header off the line and Agbonlahor striking the woodwork with another effort.

Newcastle's young 'keeper Fraser Forster also played his part in preventing title-chasing Villa from increasing their goal difference, but his challenge on Agbonlahor with sixteen minutes remaining allowed Craig Gardner the chance to fire home the resultant penalty.
