Ready, Steady, Cook!

Newcastle Reserves maintained their season-long unbeaten home record on Wednesday evening - but they were grateful for the decisive intervention of debutant Mark Cook.

The 17 year-old goalkeeper from North Shields announced his arrival at this level with a 62nd minute penalty save to deny City striker Ishmael Miller from netting his second of the night.

That kept the score at 1-1 and a couple of other timely interventions from Cook saw us home, as City dominated proceedings after having grabbed a fortunate first half equaliser.

United opened brightly despite playing into a blustery wind on a damp night and went ahead on 19 minutes when Michael Chopra converted his 14th goal of the season.

There was an element of fortune to the effort, defender Nathan D'Laryea tussling with the Magpies forward and getting his foot on the ball - only for his clearance to deflect off the onrushing City 'keeper and off Chopra into the back of the net.

Both Gate and Chopra then came close, City's only reply being an effort rightly ruled out on 25 minutes when Bradley Wright- Phillips blatantly punching Bennett's shot into the goal - cheating obviously runs in the family....

Eleven minutes before the break though, fortune smiled on Wright-Phillips as he failed to connect with an attempted volley.

However he found the ball at his feet on the edge of our box and slipped it through the left channel for Miller to fire a low effort past Cook.

From then on it was City who made the running as we never looked like scoring, but our defence held firm and a good point was ultimately claimed.
