After winning away to Liverpool and returning from recent trips to Wigan and Manchester City with a point, yet another trip across the M62 saw us beaten away from home for the first time this season.

And on a ground where we perished 0-4 last season, at least Giuseppe Rossi wasn't around to reprise his hat-trick scoring performance that night.

However the home side fielded Alan Smith, who didn't score but caused us problems all evening with his movement and link-up play with Dong.

We were second-best in all departments and only rarely threatened Tom Heaton's goal with long-range efforts - the home 'keeper never having a meaningful shot to save all night.

Newcastle's Dutch-born Academy striker Frank Wiafe Danquah made his debut at this level when appearing as a substitute.
