We Said

Lee Clark commented:

“It was probably our worst performance of the season.

“We didn’t compete the way we should have and we didn’t pass the ball the way we can.

“Perhaps people may think I am setting standards too high, but they are the standards that you will need if you want to play in the first team.

“Jonny Godsmark got us a goal just before the break and there was a little improvement, but I am disappointed.

“These are young players, though, and I hope they can learn from their experience.

“For Celestine and Shola it was important they got some game time, and that was the most positive thing of the night for those two.”

Waffle

Thursday evening saw our reserve side making their debut at Liverpool's latest second string venue - the Halliwell -Jones Stadium of Warrington Wolves Rugby League side.

And although our side was given a boost by the inclusion of experienced duo Shola Ameobi and Celestine Babayaro (the latter making his reserve debut), we were still unable to avoid returning pointless.

Liverpool's own comeback crock Harry Kewell opened the scoring on half an hour, heading in a Sebastian Leto corner from the right to give Gary Ablett's side a deserved lead.

However the Magpies rallied and Jonny Godsmark replied for Lee Clark's side three minutes before half-time.

Godsmark side-stepping a challenge before beating the 'keeper from eight yards after good work from James Troisi down our left - that's Johnny's third goal of the season.

We had it at all to do again though after the break, when Dutch striker Jordy Brouwer netted on 53 minutes, Fraser Forster seemingly fumbling a Lindfield cross with Bouwer  on hand to knock the ball into the empty net.

The forward might have bumped Forster from behind but there were no complaints from our ashen-faced 'keeper - who partially atoned a few minutes later when he flung himself to tip away a fierce shot from Craig Lindfield.

David Edgar came closest for Newcastle as they tried to get back on terms, hitting a 30-yard drive just wide but the busy Godsmark and not-so-busy Ameobi failed to muster an equaliser between them.
