We Said

Dickie Dosh said:

""It was very similar to last week at Everton and it was a very competitive, enjoyable match.

"We've got a real good work ethic about us at the minute and a competitive edge and it's making for some good reserve games.

"I thought some of our football in the first-half, when the pitch was playable, was very good.

"It was disappointing to concede right on the stroke of half-time, but they had some quality, you only had to look at their team sheet and see the names to realise they'd paid good money for some of the players.

"But we came back well in the second-half and created a couple of decent openings before Andy's equaliser - it's a great ball from Phil Airey and he's put it right on a button for him.

"It was just reward, not just for tonight, but also for last week's effort at Everton when we didn't get an equaliser. We've played at a really good tempo for two games and to lose them both 1-0 would've been unjust."

The meeting of two teams coached by former Reds defenders ended in stalemate at Whitley Park on Monday,  thanks to goals in added time at the end of each half.

Gary Ablett's Liverpool side went ahead on the stroke of half time when Dutch winger Vincent Weijl got past Phil Airey and fired low into the net past Steve Harper.

That came slightly against the run of play, although it was an object lesson in decisive finishing - Richard Money's Magpies having worked a series of openings but failed to seriously test Hungarian -born 'keeper Peter Gulacsi.

United's front trio combined well on seven minutes, with Fabio Zamblera working in the ball in from the right to Andy Carroll. He in turn set up Sammy Ameobi on the overlap, but the youngster shot harmlessly wide.

Carroll then saw his effort smothered, while Zamblera and Mark Doninger both fatally hesitated when presented with opportunities to shoot and the danger was cleared.

Fired up for the second half, Mark Doninger and Carroll both came close before Nile Ranger was introduced in an attempt to unsettle the solid-looking Liverpool defence.

At the other end though, Harper was fortunate to be able to collect a wayward pullback from El Zhar while Sammy Ameobi got back to block another goalbound effort.

Just when the visitors looked to have done enough to secure the victory though, Carroll netted his third goal in four reserve starts this season to reward his side's efforts with a deserved point.
