48 hours after the U18s claimed maximum points in their opening league game, United's U23s also made a winning start to the season for the first time since 2012.

Peter Beardsley's side scored three goals without reply on a fine afternoon at City's Colney training ground, Haris Vuckic grabbing a brace and Gael Bigirimana successfully converting a penalty kick.

Vuckic gave Newcastle the lead after 31 minutes, pressurising City defender Ben Godfrey into losing possession before shooting home.

Bigirimana doubled the lead from the spot nine minutes after the break, when home goalkeeper Ben Killip was adjudged to have fouled Sean Longstaff - although no card was shown.

Vuckic then got his second and United's third on 69 minutes from Longstaff's left wing cross, confirming our first competitive victory in eight games - a winless run stretching back to January 2016.

The Magpies are on the road again for their next two games - away to West Ham and then Aston Villa - before belatedly enjoying home advantage for the first time against Stoke City on Monday September 12th.
