Having lost their opening game in the Central League Cup to Sheffield United, Newcastle's U23 side gained their first points in that competition on Friday.

Sean Longstaff led the way with a hat-trick, while Danish forward Elias Sorensen registered his first club goals in a convincing win at Little Benton.

The opening stages were dominated by Newcastle but a succession of wayward shots left Ryan Cattertick untested in the 'Pools goal.

Sean Longstaff came closest in the 21st minute when he hit the post from the edge of the box but opened the scoring a minute later with a simple finish following a mazy run from reserve debutant Adam Wilson.

A rare 'Pools attack saw them level just five minutes later when Rhys Oates let fly from outside the box, before the one-way traffic resumed and Newcastle enjoyed further elongated periods of possession.

There was no end product until the 59th minute mark though, when the visitors were caught out from their own corner - Callum Williams breaking before playing in Longstaff who confidently flicked it home.

From then on it was just a question of how many, as a defence including former Magpie reserve Ben Pollock came under increasing pressure from all angles.

Longstaff completed his hat-trick in the 66th minute when substitute Mackenzie Heaney burst into the box with his first touch, slipping a pass into the striker who wrong-footed the 'keeper with a first time knock to make it eight goals in his last seven reserve games.

Heaney then provided a cross from the left for United's fourth with Elias Sorensen stabbing the ball home at the back post in the 81st minute.

Two minutes from time the scoring was complete when Sorensen got his second after Longstaff unselfishly set up the Dane to shoot home at the second attempt.
