Following a 0-0 draw at St. James' Park in a Premier League 2 fixture on Monday night, the two sides met again at Gallowgate on Saturday afternoon in the last 16 of the Premier League Cup.

And an added time winner from Sammy Ameobi was enough to knock out the current Cup holders - after his late effort had taken the tie into extra time.

Along with Matz Sels and Massadio Haidara, Ameobi was one of three senior players in the Newcastle side but the home side fell behind early on when full back Liam Gibson fouled Dan Kemp in the area.

Ashley Fletcher sent Sels the wrong way from the penalty and the visitors held the upper hand until the dying moments of the first half, when Ameobi's effort was diverted on to the bar by Nathan Trott.

Luke Charman was prevented from levelling after 56 minutes by a fine interception from Kyle Knoyle, but the Newcastle forward got his goal soon afterwards - tucking Haidara's centre in from close range.

West Ham got their noses in front with seventeen minutes remaining when captain Declan Rice headed home Knoyle's cross, only for Ameobi to make it 2-2 with ten minutes thanks to an unstoppable shot.

The visitors came desperately close to snatching victory in the third minute of injury time, only for Marcus Browne to hit the post from long distance.

And from our final attack, Ameobi drove powerfully down the left before pulling a low ball towards the back post - to where Noha Sylvestre made a fine clearance as two home players arrived.

It was to be Ameobi's day however and his powerful low drive into the Leazes End goal five minutes into the first half of extra time won the tie - although the Hammers were unhappy when Tunji Akinola had the ball in the net only for a foul to be called on Sels.
