Laurent Robert Interview 13

Taken from his own official (French Language) website 03.09.02

Yesterday, in the 2-2 draw between Liverpool and Newcastle, you made your return, and you immediately showed you were back.

Yes, it went very well. Like I said last week, we went to Liverpool for at least a point. We were in a bad situation as the Reds took a 2-0 lead after 70 minutes. But in the end, we successfully over-turned the deficit through Speed and Shearer. What was good, was that the two goals came from my side. We could have even won it from my final cross, but Shearer couldn't quite hit the back of the net.

The result is therefore positive.

Absolutely. I can no longer feel any problems with my back, and I was very, very happy to return. I was the originator of the first goal. I gave the ball to Bellamy who set up Speed who scored, and I made the assist for Shearer.

How did you feel before you made your return to action.

I was very happy. It's been two months since I last made an appearance, and there, to find that atmosphere in such a stadium, and my team-mates gave me enormous pleasure. After being on the pitch once, I rediscovered the sensations, the contacts, and I will get better little by little.

Your season is hopefully up and running

I hope so! Anyway, tonight I'm playing in the reserves. I want to prepare myself physically because next week, we play hosts to Leeds United. There are a run of tough matches which follow - we must play every three days and we must be on top form if we are to pull through.

Liverpool had a two goal advantage. How do you explain that?

I put that down to a lack of concentration on our part. If we had been in a bit more in the game earlier on, I don't think we'd have taken those two goals. Defensively, we're not at our best. We have to gel better as a unit. It's quite worrying, because in terms of the Champions League, we have to improve at the back. We know that we can't relax, or we'll pay the price.

One last thing. Bruno Cheyrou has been called up by Jacques Santini (French coach) to replace Thierry Henry.

Ah, yes? I didn't know that. That's good because I saw Bruno yesterday as he was on the bench. It's good that he's changing his plans. Until next time, bye.
