Laurent Robert Interview 20

Taken from his own official (French Language) website 02.10.02

Newcastle lost 2-0 last night in Turin. Even if the qualification remains possible, it now looks pretty unlikely.

True but we're still in it, so you've got to believe. Now we've got to concentrate on the last three matches, take as many points as possible to at least get into third place and at least a slot in the UEFA cup. I really hope we manage it.

How did the match pan out for you ?

Right from the off, I had a shot with the right that was just over. There  were a few free-kicks, but it just wouldn't go in. At the end of the first half, I had that chance from 4 metres out but I shot straight at the keeper. You can't really see it from the TV but Shearer had got a touch which was why I had to jump to hit it.

Watching the highlights, you feel that Juventus completely dominated the match.

That's the television. Juventus had the upper hand but we played some good  stuff. I think the match was pretty even actually. Unfortunately there was Del Piero who was the difference, with those two goals. He's in great form at the moment and showed it last night. Whats really sad is that at 1-0, I crossed for Shearer who stuck it in to equalise, but they disallowed it for a non-existent offside. At 1-1, anything could have happened.

How was the atmosphere on the plane ?

Pretty frustrated, because they weren't as good as all that. Zero points from three matches is pretty hard to swallow.

Did you know that Pierre Mankowski (member of French national side coaching staff) was in the stand ?

I found out after the match and we had a chat. (laughs) He told me I had worked hard defensively. Now, I'm thinking about the match against West Brom. They lost to Blackburn on Monday night so they're going to want to make up for that on Saturday at St-James Park. We want those points though... Speak to you next week, salut.
