U21s:
Friday
night failure Newcastle U21s 0 Leeds United U21s 2
There was PL2 action at Whitley Park
for the last time this season tonight, as Newcastle U21s were beaten
by their Leeds United counterparts. After
an incident-free first half when neither goalkeeper was troubled,
the visitors went ahead thanks to a 67th minute penalty conversion
by Luca Thomas.
A home player was apparently penalised for handball, but the offence
was anything but obvious and given on the say-so of a linesman -
match referee James Oldham closer to the incident and giving a goal
kick.
The visitors took the lead in the 67th minute from the spot when Luca Thomas converted after the referee gave a delayed award for handball apparently. Thomas
then doubled that lead in the 80th minute when left unchallenged on the edge of the box
to fire home.
Newcastle's best chance of a goal had come at 0-0, when Alfie
Harrison drew a save from Dani Van Den Heuvel and Kyle Crossley put
the rebound into orbit.
Defeat left the Magpies second bottom of PL2 and means that with two
games left, they cannot mathematically qualify for the end of season
playoff.
Team: A.Harris, Shahar, Charlton, McArthur (Heffernan 46), Thompson, J.Miley (Hackett 83),
Turner-Cooke, Stanton (De Bolle 67), Crossley (Brayson 76), Al.Harrison, Diallo. Sub n/u:
Brown. Booked: J.Miley. LUFC: Van den Heuvel, Cresswell, Ferguson (Lopata-White 59), Coleman, Moore, Monteiro, Richards, Chadwick, Thomas, Chambers (Debayo 87), Allen (Douglas 59). Subs: Christy, Snowdon. Booked: Coleman. Crowd: 201.
Referee: James Oldham
Ben Dawson's side have one home game remaining in PL2,
facing Aston Villa at SJP on Monday week, April 29th. That's a 7pm
start.
2024/25:
No Atlantic
crossing
We understand Newcastle have abandoned attempts to arrange a
pre-season tour of the USA, after no suitable financial package
could be agreed upon.
Negotiations over alternative destinations are now in progress, with
claims of various long haul and European venues appearing in recent
days.
United played three matches in the USA in 2023 as part of the "Premier
League Summer Series", facing Aston Villa, Brighton &
Hove Albion and Chelsea.
There's no equivalent PL event this year, but Arsenal, Chelsea,
Liverpool and both Manchester clubs have all arranged their own
stateside kickabouts.
PS: The format of the 2023 SELA Cup event is expected to be repeated
this year, with the Magpies and three as-yet unidentified sides each
playing two games at Gallowgate over the weekend of August
10th/11th.
2024/25:
FAC update
Changes to the FA Cup competition from next season for a minimum of
six seasons were announced by the FA on Thursday as follows:
Scrapping of all replays from FAC1 onwards - for NUFC that puts an
end to FAC3R and FAC4R; FAC5R had previously been scrapped.
No midweek FAC round scheduling, ending the recent trend of playing
the Fifth Round in midweek.
FAC4 played over six days from Friday to Wednesday.
No PL games scheduled on FAC4, FAC5 and FAC QF weekends but FACF to
be played on the Saturday of the penultimate weekend of the PL
season*. No PL games to be played on that Saturday or the Friday
night.
* by our calculations that's May 17th 2025.
PS: The PL have also announced that the mid-season break that has
existed in different formats over recent seasons won't be continued.
2024/25:
European update
Champions League exits for Manchester City and Arsenal on Wednesday
and defeats in the Europa League for Liverpool and West Ham on
Thursday mean that hopes of a fifth Champions League spot next season
for English clubs are virtually extinguished.
With one of the two "wild card" places locked in for Serie
A, the Bundesliga currently holds the second-best UEFA ranking
coefficient with the Premier League in third.
That leaves seven guaranteed European spots at present; four in the
Champions League, two in the Europa League and one in the Conference
League.
Those were originally allocated as follows:
PL 1st-4th in Champions League
PL 5th in Europa League
FAC winners in Europa League
CC winners in Conference League
Liverpool have the EL place as CC winners, but will take a CL place
assuming they finish in the PL top four. That frees up the EL place
to the team finishing sixth.
If Manchester City win the FA Cup they will remain in a CL place due
to their PL position, with the sixth-placed finishers taking an EL
place and the EC place opening up for the side finishing seventh in
the PL.
There's no European
competition place for the FA Cup Final runners-up, unless they
qualify by other means.
The Premier League's last remaining side in Europe are Aston Villa,
who advanced to the last four of the Conference League.
If the Villans won that competition, they would gain a spot in next
season's Europa League - unless their domestic finishing position
yielded a Champions League or Europa League spot. If they didn't
need that winner's place, it wouldn't be allocated to an English
side.

2023/24:
Crystal Palace (a)
The Magpies are back in action on
Wednesday, with a rescheduled Premier League
meeting against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
It's a non-televised, 8pm start.
Team:
Joe Willock will reportedly
play no further part in the remaining games this season, as he
continues to struggle with an achilles problem.
Callum Wilson has now returned to full training and is set for a place on the
bench. He's netted two of our last three goals away to Palace in the
PL.
Nick Pope, Miggy Almiron, Matt Targett,
Joelinton, Lewis Miley and Kieran
Trippier remain out - it's unclear
whether any of them will be back for this game.
Sandro Tonali remains unavailable due to suspension, while
Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are both long-term absentees with
ACL injuries.
The threat of suspension has finally been lifted from Bruno
Guimaraes
after the 32 game mark.
CPFC:
Sam Johnstone, Cheick Doucoure, Marc Guehi and Rob Holding are all
currently sidelined.
Ahead of our visit, the Eagles are at home to West Ham on Sunday.

2022/23 scored 32 (19 away games)
1993/94 scored 31 (21 away games)

2002/03 scored 27 (19 away games)
2011/12 scored 27 (19 away games)
2023/24 scored 26 (15 away games)

a goal against United in all five league and meetings - a run of 484
minutes without conceding.

Olympic
hopes in the balance for Magpie
Newcastle's Garang Kuol is
currently on international duty with Australia at the U23 Asian Cup
in Qatar - and it's fair to say things aren't going particularly
well...
Australia are in Group D at the 16 team event
and lost 0-1 to Indonesia in their second game on Thursday. Kuol was
introduced as a 75th minute replacement.
The Olyroos played out
a 0-0 draw in Doha on Monday, with Kuol arriving as a 69th minute substitute.
Sunday then sees them face the hosts, also in Doha.
They'll need victory in that game to stand any chance of being one
of the top three sides in the competition and earning a place in the
Olympic Football tournament in Paris this summer. The side that finishes fourth enters a qualification playoff.
Latest:
Staveley update
Updates from Companies House involving subsidiary companies related
to Newcastle United caused a stir on Wednesday morning, specifically
the resignation of Amanda Staveley from a number of directorships.
However, these updates were explained as administrative rather than
strategic, with her position as a director of Newcastle United
Football Company Limited unchanged - that company established back
in 1890.
Club CEO Darren Eales is now also a director of that company, which
is in keeping with previous holders of that post including David
Stonehouse etc.

Last gasp victory
is Taylor made! Newcastle U18s 4 Liverpool U18s 3
There
was a memorable night for Newcastle U18s under the Whitley Park
floodlights on Tuesday, coming from behind to defeat Liverpool
despite being a man short.
The opening 45 minutes gave little indication of what was to follow,
Liverpool going ahead in the 16th minute when Afolami Onanuga's
unstoppable shot from outside the box crashed home off the left hand post.
Little had been seen of United as an attacking force before the
interval, home 'keeper Aidan Harris denying Keiran Morrison after 28 minutes to keep it
at 0-1.
United got the second period off to a great start when a corner from the
right dropped for Josh Donaldson, who forced the ball home.
Donaldson then put his side ahead on 59 minutes after good work from
Matheos Ferreira, the Magpies striker
finding the bottom right hand corner from 18 yards. That
lead only lasted for three minutes though; Trent Kone-Doherty
converting a penalty following a shove on Josh Sonni-Lambie by Harry
Powell in the box. With the game at 2-2, the young Magpies were reduced to ten men in the
71st minute when Logan Watts saw red for a full-blooded, studs-up tackle on Onanuga. The Reds
then regained the lead three minutes later with the hosts down to
nine men - Paul Brayson off the pitch injured - visiting substitute Ollie O'Connor
heading in Joe Bradshaw's cross from the right. Incredibly
though it was all square again on 77 minutes; Liverpool's Tyler Martin
heading into his own net after a centre from the right was swung into the box. Another
injury saw United's Darren Palmer replaced by Matty Taylor as the
ten men continued to press forward - Ferreira bringing a noteworthy
stop out of Kornel Misciur with three minutes of normal time left.
Five minutes of added time were in the process of being announced
when another powerful surge from Donaldson gave Taylor the chance to
shoot.
And the 16 year-old cleverly converted a low effort for his first
goal at this level, incredibly making it 4-3 to United.
Some heroic blocking and defending from the ten men then kept
Liverpool at bay, a gutsy second half display bringing just reward
when Harris brilliantly tipped over a dipping shot.
The final whistle then sounded with six additional minutes played -
an epic effort from the black and whites, ending a run of five
successive home losses that had stretched back to January.
Victory also saw United complete a league double over the Reds following a 2-1
win on Merseyside in October when Sean Neave
and Tom Bryant were on target. Team: Harris, Watts, Bryant, Johnson,
H.Powell, Palmer (Taylor 81), Bloomer, Ferreira (Durrant 38), Donaldson,
O'Donovan, Brayson (Wooster 75). Subs n/u:
Ad.Harrison, Old.
Booked: H.Powell.
Sent off: Watts.
Crowd: 141 (free admission).

Senior Cup date set
A new date for the Northumberland Senior Cup

level after 90 minutes then the tie will be settled on penalties.

Update:
Join Hall.....
Speaking to Chronicle scribe Lee Ryder following the 4-0 home win
over Spurs, Lewis Hall confirmed that the terms switching his
loan move from Chelsea to a permanent transfer had been
met:
"I am here now as a
Newcastle player and I really enjoy it. The future looks really good
for the club with so many young and talented players. It is going in
the right direction."
"I played a lot of my early
senior appearances at left-back or wing-back. But I like to be
versatile and play in other positions if required.
"I used to be a midfielder
when I was younger but wherever the gaffer wants me to play I will
play."
The 19 year-old made his twelfth Premier League appearance as a
Magpie on the day that victory for Newcastle confirmed they'd finish
14th or higher.
The second stipulation that Hall to be named in 30 or more first
team squads was also met, meaning that a £28m switch from Stamford
Bridge is now locked in.

Update:
Sports Direct v NUFC
- tribunal decision
Update:
Friday saw the Competition Appeal Tribunal rule that the Sports
Direct claim against Newcastle United was insufficient to merit the
granting of an injunction against the club.
The case will proceed to trial unless an alternative solution can be
reached, with no delay to the June home kit launch permissible,
regardless of whether said trial has taken place by then.
Sports Direct are challenging the club's plans to sell next
season's shirts themselves and via retailer JD Sports - the latter
gaining an exclusive licence.
Earlier: details of next season's Adidas kit
releases came out during the tribunal, including a home kit
launch on June 7th, the away kit in July and a third kit in August.
Figures disclosed during the tribunal also suggest that the
Adidas production run is around 375,000 shirts.
Update:

PS: The veterans section of the Soccer Sevens will also run
at the same time, with Wallsend Boys club defending their Masters
crown.

Born Or Died:
1944 Ron Guthrie born, Burradon.
(1963-73)
Spotted
playing for New Hartley Juniors, Ron was converted from a left winger to a left
back after injuring a cartilage while turning out for Newcastle reserves.
Making his first team debut in August 1966 in a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa, he was
never a regular starter, with Frank Clark first-choice number three at SJP.
Occasionally deployed as a sweeper, Ron also suffered recurring injury problems
but was involved in the successful Fairs Cup campaign of 1968/69 as a
substitute.
An injury to David Craig in the home tie against Real Zaragoza saw Guthrie get
his chance, with Clark moving to right back.
Unfortunately his season then came to a premature end after another cartilage
injury, sustained against Arsenal.
There was to be a happy ending though, when Joe Harvey presented Ron with a
Fairs Cup winner's miniature trophy before the start of the next season - the
club having acquired extra ones for the substitutes.
That season saw Guthrie feature against both Porto and Anderlecht in the Fairs
Cup, finally leaving the club for the mackems in January 1973 - and playing in
their FA Cup Final win over Leeds that year.
He later played in South Africa, before returning to the region and joining
Blyth Spartans. Involved in their memorable FA Cup run of 1978, Ron appeared at a packed
SJP against Wrexham in February 1978 as they bowed out at the Fifth Round
stage.
Ron later had a milk business with fellow ex-Magpie David Craig
and also worked as a delivery driver for Fenwick. He's the cousin of ex-Newcastle
chief scout Graham Carr.
1989 Death of George
Mathison, 79.
(1926-33)
1995 Kevin Mbabu born, Chêne-Bougeries, Switzerland.
(2013-17)
Defender signed for an undisclosed fee
from Swiss club Servette during the January 2013 transfer window, following a
successful trial.
Scouted playing for Switzerland U19s at a tournament in Scotland during 2012, Mbabu also trained with both Manchester United and Arsenal.
Making a single senior team appearance at Servette, Kevin's competitive debut
for Newcastle came in a 2-1 reserve team victory away to Stoke City in April
2013.
A succession of injuries disrupted his first full season as a Magpie
however, suffering both hamstring and ankle problems.
Returning to fitness in the closing weeks of the 2013/14 campaign, Mbabu
collected a Northumberland Senior Cup winners medal after beating Blyth
Spartans 4-0 at SJP.
Injured on international duty with the Swiss U19s, the following season saw
him feature occaisonally for United U21s before a surprise loan move to
Rangers in
February 2015
Kevin moved to Ibrox along with Haris Vuckic, Remie Streete, Shane Ferguson and Gael
Bigirimana, but his arrival was delayed due to further fitness issues and his
most high profile game was the SFA Youth
Cup Final.
Omitted from Newcastle's first team squad the following pre-season, Mbabu made
a competitive debut at right back in a 0-1 League Cup loss to Sheffield
Wednesday at Gallowgate in September 2015.
Selected for a 2-2 home draw with Chelsea the
following weekend (at left back this time), Kevin played three more
games for Steve McClaren, but was injured again when Rafa Benitez arrived in March 2016.
Selected twice as an unused substitute in the closing weeks of the season,
Mbabu made the senior squad for pre-season in Ireland but was sent home
due to injury.
August 2016 saw him agree a season-long loan to Swiss side BSC Young Boys that
was made permanent in June 2017.
Making his senior bow for Switzerland in 2018, Kevin signed a
four-year deal for German side
Wolfsburg in April 2019. In the Swiss squad at the 2022 World Cup,
a move to Fulham followed but a disastrous spell at Craven Cottage that saw
him start just one Premier League game (a 1-4 home loss to Newcastle) ended
with a loan return to Servette in February 2023. A season-long loan to Bundesliga side Augsburg was Kevin's next move in September 2023.
1992 Nick Pope born, Soham.
(2022-present)
Newcastle's second signing of the summer
2022 transfer window was a goalkeeper who had just
suffered relegation from the top flight as a result of
defeat by United.
Secured on a four year contract for £10m, the England
international was in the final year of his deal at Turf
Moor and became the third senior custodian at SJP
alongside Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow - joining as
Freddie Woodman was sold to Preston North End.
Released by Ipswich Town at the age of 16, Nick was at
non-league Bury Town when Charlton Athletic took him on
trial in 2011.
Loan spells at Cambridge United, Aldershot, York City and
Bury followed before becoming first choice for the Addicks
during 2015.
Sold to Burnley in 2016, a first senior outing for England
followed against Costa Rica the following June, having
never played at any international level previously.
Although sharing duties with the other two in pre-season
following his debut against 1860 Munich in Austria, it
soon became evident that Pope would be first choice and he
made his bow in the opening day home defeat of Nottingham
Forest.
By September, Dubravka had flounced off to Old Trafford on
loan and free agent Loris Karius arrived, Nick embarking
on an epic ten game run of clean sheets that was ended the
following January after 931 minutes.
Disaster then struck with a red card at home to Liverpool,
putting Pope out of the Carabao Cup Final and leaving
Karius to go between the posts against Manchester United -
Darlow on loan at Hull City and Dubravka back, but
cup-tied due to his Red Devils stint.
Returning to the side, Nick played his part in Newcastle's
resurgence and denied Ivan Toney from the penalty spot at
Brentford. Minor surgery on a finger injury followed the securing of Champions League football but his 2023/24 season was cut short with a shoulder injury sustained against Manchester United in December.

Division One
P33, 37pts, 3rd/18
Rutherford(12,53), Roberts(49)

One game remaining but United were certain to finish
third behind Everton and the mackems, who were already
Champions.
1913 Manchester United
(a)
0-3 (0-1)
Division One
P37, 34pts, 13th/20
Hunter(40,47), West(88)

Wearsider William Hunter netted just twice in his
brief career at Old Trafford and unfortunately, both of
those goals came in this game.
1924 Chelsea (a)

Division One
P41, 44pts, 9th/22
Armstrong(30)
30,000
A week ahead of the FA Cup Final against Aston
Villa at Wembley, United were in London and in the opinion
of one reporter present, "gave one the impression
that they were holding a lot in reserve."
This was the second of four successive Chelsea home games
to end their season. Despite winning
them all though, they were relegated on goal average.
Shame.
1927 Huddersfield Town
(a)
0-1 (0-0)
Division One
P29, 53pts, 1st/22
Brown(90)
44,636
A sensational finish to a mundane game at Leeds Road
came after Frank Hudspeth needlessly conceded a corner in
the final seconds of play.
From that, Northumbrian native George Brown was able to
head through a crowd of players and into the net. The
visitors protested that there had been a handball, but
referee Mr G.N.Watson was unmoved and the goal was given.
Victory for second-placed Town over leaders Newcastle left
the Terriers four points behind with three games each to
play - but with a much worse goal average. One more win would do
be enough to ensure the title for United.
1930 Leeds United (h)

Division One
P39,
34pts, 19th/22
Gallacher(13,67)

Without a win in seven games before defeating
Liverpool at Gallowgate on Good Friday, United collected
another two points the following day that kept them out of
the bottom two places.
This hard-fought but crucial victory came thanks to Hughie
Gallacher's brace, but it was home centre half Jack Hill
who gained praise for his towering display in keeping
Leeds at bay.

Meanwhile at St.James' Park, 4,000 fans saw a 2-2

After Robbie Elliott's corner kick was diverted

United took the
lead at the Cottagers' temporary home of Loftus Road, thanks
to a fine Alan Shearer header.
However, the points were thrown away in no small part to
Andy Griffin's dismissal for a reckless lunge which earned
him a second booking from Dermot Gallacher.
The referee also played his part by ignoring a blatant
penalty claim, when Craig Bellamy was clearly impeded in
the first half.
Legwinski equalised with
a fine long range effort before former (and future)
Magpie Lee Clark netted a late winner - the second season
that he'd scored in this fixture.

Despite having their game moved
back to the Monday night for TV and with the volcanic ash
cloud wrecking travel plans for both fans and players, United
still clinched the Championship title with this victory at
Home Park.
The 2-0 scoreline, yellow shirts and reaction of the crowd
were all reminiscent of Blundell Park in 1993 as delirious
Toon fans celebrated with the players on the pitch.
For David Kelly, this time read Wayne Routledge who
rounded the keeper and squeezed the ball inside the post
as he struggled to keep his feet, to make it 2-0 after
Andy Carroll had given us the lead with a towering header.

Newcastle
held out for a heartening point on a night that loan signing Stephen
Ireland made a belated debut - eleven weeks after arriving.
However, he was unable to coax anything close to a goal threat out of our blunt
front pair of Peter Lovenkrands and Shola Ameobi.
Local
anti-hero Michael Owen was introduced from the bench to a wall of booing but thankfully the nightmare scenario of
him scoring didn't come to pass
and after one major scare, the Magpies held on to claim a much-prized
point.
That heart-stopping moment came in injury time as Hernandez went to ground
under challenge from ex-Red Devil Danny Simpson and referee Lee Probert looked for one awful
moment to have indicated a spot kick.
However, it rapidly became evident that he'd actually penalised the visiting
player for diving and showed him a yellow card.
