Newcastle began their EFL Trophy campaign at Hillsborough on Tuesday in familiar fashion, losing their eighth successive fixture in this competition.

The Owls fielded a much-changed side from the one beaten 0-1 at Morecambe in League One at the weekend, but scored three goals without reply and could have beaten United's youngsters by a greater margin.

Wednesday took the lead four minutes before half-time through Sylla Sow's low finish after Lewis Wing and Dennis Adeniran combined to set him up.

United had survived something of an onslaught until then, goalkeeper Dan Langley making some fine saves and the woodwork coming to his rescue.

The Owls got their second six minutes after the interval when Marvin Johnson hit an unstoppable drive in off the post.

And two minutes later it was 3-0 when Liam Palmer was put through on goal and also netted via a post.

What was to be United's best chance saw Adam Wilson shot narrowly over the bar on the hour shortly after entering the action.

Palmer then rattled the woodwork with 20 minutes remaining before Charlie Wiggett made an 80th minute goal line clearance to prevent Owls substitute Korede Adedoyin making it four.

The Owls top Northern Group H after the opening fixtures, after Harrogate Town beat Mansfield Town 3-1, Danilo Orsi-Dadomo bagging a hat-trick.

Newcastle are winless in this competition since defeating Macclesfield Town on penalties in December 2018.

Next up for them is a trip to League Two Harrogate in October followed a visit to fellow third tier side Mansfield in November.

Although the competition has existed in various guises since 1981, it took until the 2017/18 season for a revamp allowing PL reserve sides including United to join in.
