Newcastle U23s made it to the Final of the Northumberland Senior Cup on Thursday, triumphing on penalties thanks to vital contributions from Jake Turner and Jay Turner-Cooke.

Bidding to regain a trophy they last won in 2018, United will now face the winners of Tuesday's Blyth Spartans versus Bedlington Terriers semi-final.

Shields took the lead in the 19th minute on a blustery night at the Daren Persson Stadium; David Robinson wriggling along the right byline and Dan Wilson's shot deflecting up for Brad Hird to nod into the net from point-blank range.

The hosts almost doubled their lead in the 24th minute but Dan Wilson lifted his shot over goalkeeper Jake Turner and the crossbar after bursting into the box.

United's first effort on target came from Dylan Stephenson in the 33rd minute but his weak effort from inside the box was blocked by ex-Magpie 'keeper Olly Marshall.

Newcastle equalised three minutes after the break, Jay Turner-Cooke sweeping home a free-kick from the right hand side of the box after a foul by Chris McDonald.

The Northern League hosts struggled to respond to that blow; United enjoying an increasing territorial advantage as the tie wore on.

Marshall did well to reach Rodrigo Vilca's powerful effort from 20 yards in the 65th minute, while substitute Santiago Munoz set Stephenson clear late on, but he was foiled by the home custodian.

With no extra time now played in this competition and the rain beginning to fall, the tie was decided by a penalty shootout.

Jake Turner saved the first spot kick that he faced to set United on their way, with Turner-Cooke coolly firing in the winner.
