Newcastle U23s missed the chance to strengthen their challenge for a promotion playoff place on Friday, despite making an encouraging start to their game at the Lancashire FA HQ.

Visiting goalkeeper Max Thompson denied Burnley's Rob Harker from the penalty spot midway through the first half and things got even better on 29 minutes, Jay Turner-Cooke claiming his tenth U23 league and cup goal of the season with a shot from distance.

That gave United a lead that they held at half time, but the second period was a rather different matter. Burnley were level within eleven minutes when Ben Woods rattled home an unstoppable volley, before going ahead on 66 minutes with an even more eye-catching Woods free kick.

The hosts added a third when Harker lobbed home in the 75th minute before Burnley's Max Thompson won a one on one with his Newcastle namesake with four minutes remaining for 4-1.

Former Manchester United youngster Woods then completed his hat-trick in the final minute of normal time when converting a penalty kick. Despite the setback, United remained in sixth place, two points and one position off a playoff berth with three games left.
