NUFC v WWFC - moment in history:

April 1908 Newcastle players prepare to leave their pre-final hotel

April 1908 and Newcastle were in FA Cup Final action at the Crystal Palace, strong favourites to win the trophy for the first time as the team that finished fourth in the top flight were matched with a Wolves side who had ended up ninth in Division Two.

Having made their preparations at a training camp in Saltburn, the Newcastle party travelled to London by train and arriving on the Friday afternoon. Snow on the pitch at Sydenham reportedly melted 48 hours before the game but left the ground boggy - a perceived benefit to United.

However the Crystal Palace hoodoo would struck once again and Newcastle deservedly lost 1-3, making a third visit to the South London venue and being beaten for the third time - with only the scant consolation of getting on the scoresheet there for the very first time.

The Newcastle players returned to The Manchester Hotel in the City of London to dine with club officials and fans. The victorious Wolves team were at a restaurant in nearby Holborn meanwhile and both sides attended The Alhambra Theatre in Leicester Square, to see "bioscope pictures of the match" (primitive film footage). An Odeon Cinema now stands on that spot.
