47 mins Robbie Cockburn's pace simply destroyed Newcastle as he streaked forward down the Bedlington left and played the ball infield to the waiting Willie Moat, who mis-kicked his shot on goal. 

It ran towards Dean Gibb who lined up to fire in an effort only for it to be touched away by a retreating defender. However Moat had continued his forward progress into the area and ran on to the ball, sidestepping goalkeeper Phil Pringle before touching it home again from close range. 0-2

I saw Jamie dissing Santa Claus...

United's Jamie McClen received an unwanted Christmas card at Welfare Park on Thursday, dismissed for making an inappropriate comment to the match referee.

Spectators close to the incident during the Northumberland Senior Cup tie later confirmed that what was going to be a yellow card for a tackle became a straight red when the visiting midfielder gave his name as Santa Claus.

An unimpressed referee promptly dispatched him without further ado to the nearby grotto, otherwise known as the changing rooms.

Nobody from Newcastle or Bethlehem sorry, Bedlington Terriers was available to comment, although several small children later attempted to gain access to the away dressing room to ask Jamie if he'd bring them a bike, rollerboots and the new Steps record 'cos they'd been dead good all year.

United's second string surrendered their grip on the silverware when a streetwise Terriers side out-fought big-time charlies who didn't fancy it on a bumpy pitch. 

As has been the case more than once in recent weeks, when conditions are less than perfect and some sleeves-rolled up battling is required, our lot were shivering with their gloves on.

Had first half efforts from Mark Boyd beaten the keeper things might have been different, but for the final hour of the game, the Northern league side were never in the slightest danger.

Terriers' hero was veteran Willie Moat who scored both goals - the first four minutes before half-time, not long after coming on as sub. He fired in from close range after a cross from the right hand side.

The killer second goal from Moat came two minutes after the break and without Silvio Maric to score a late hat-trick (cf NSC semi April 2000), United deservedly succumbed to the side they beat 3-1 in last season's final, played in September.

It could have been more, as we had absolutely no presence in front of goal even with 11 men, while Bedlington tormented our defenders through the pace and trickery of Chapman and Robbie Cockburn aka the Felton Flyer. 

Wayne Quinn in particular looked uncomfortable, but it would be unfair to single anyone out - they were all totally anonymous.

PS - nice of the Journal to re-christen him Jamie McGlen in their non-report.
