Victory at the Riverside on Friday night ensured a third-place league finish for Newcastle reserves, securing home advantage in their upcoming Premier League 2 Division Two play-off semi-final.

Peter Beardsley's side had beaten Boro 2-0 in the corresponding game at Gallowgate in October and went ahead when Tom Heardman converted Dan Barlaser's free kick from close in on 29 minutes.

That lead was doubled ten minutes later when Adam Wilson registered his first U23 league goal, converting the loose ball after debutant 'keeper Zak Hemmings got a hand to a Heardman header.

The hosts ended the game with ten men, when Callum Johnson was shown a straight red card for a foul in added time.

There was a debut from the bench for 19 year-old Josef Yarney, formerly with Everton and currently on trial with Newcastle. Liverpool-born defender Yarney is out of contract at the end of the current season, representing the Toffees at U23 level in the EFL Trophy three times in 2016/17.

Midfielder Stefan Broccoli meanwhile was an unused substitute after recovering from injury that sidelined him for most of the season. The home line-up included Marcus Tavernier, younger brother of former Magpie James.

The game was preceded by a minute's silence in memory of recently-deceased former Boro player Ugo Ehiogu and players wore black armbands.
