Ex-manager:
Joe Kinnear dies

From Sky Sports on Sunday evening:

Joe Kinnear, the former Tottenham defender and Wimbledon manager, has died at the age of 77.

Dublin-born Kinnear, who won the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup as a player with Tottenham, went on to manage Luton, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle among others.

A statement from his family said: "We are sad to announce that Joe passed away peacefully this afternoon surrounded by his family."

His wife Bonnie revealed in 2021 that her husband had been living with dementia since 2015.

Kinnear resigned from his role of Director of Football at SJP in February 2014 after being appointed by Mike Ashley eight months earlier.

He had been Interim Manager at Newcastle between September 2008 and February 2009 after Kevin Keegan's shock departure.

Youngsters fall short

Blackburn Rovers U18s  2  Newcastle U18s  1

An inexperienced Magpies side lost by the odd goal in three on Saturday at Blackburn's Brockhall Academy.

Debutant goalkeeper Noah Cooper - most recently with Arsenal U18s - was beaten by Joe Boggan's 22nd minute effort and picked the ball out of his net again five minutes later from Jackson Shorrocks.

Newcastle introduced Joe Brayson from the bench at half time and he reduced the arrears in the 65th minute with his sixth U18 goal of the season. The striker had also featured for our U21s the previous night.

In addition to Cooper, United fielded 16 year-old defender Theodore Adelusi, formerly at Spurs. There was also a debut at this level for midfielder Sam Alabi.

Team: Cooper, Bryant, Adelusi, H.Powell, Palmer, Watts, Bloomer, O'Donovan (Alabi 84), Taylor (Brayson 46), Donaldson (Wooster 76), Ferreira (Durrant 90+1). Sub n/u: Ad.Harrison

Booked: Watts

PS: Goalkeeper Cooper (presumably a trialist) was in the Gunners side that beat Newcastle 3-2 in last season's FA Youth Cup Fourth Round at SJP.

Non-league:

Tynesiders triumph

A crowd in excess of 3,000 were at the International Stadium on Saturday to see Gateshead reach their second successive FA Trophy Final.

A 2-1 win over Macclesfield Town was enough to seal a visit to Wembley Stadium on Saturday May 11th.

SJP old boy Rob Elliot's side will face Solihull Moors following their 2-1 victory at Bromley on Saturday.

Isaac Hayden (QPR):

The midfielder completed 69 minutes of Saturday's 0-2 Championship home loss to Sheffield Wednesday at the cost of a booking.

Jeff Hendrick (Sheffield Wednesday):
The midfielder was an unused substitute against his former side QPR on Saturday as the Owls won 2-0 at Loftus Road in the Championship.

Harrison Ashby (Swansea City):
Still no place for the defender in the Jacks squad, beaten 0-2 at Boro in the Championship on Saturday.

There was a 75 minute shift for Fraser on Saturday as the Saints were held to their third successive draw in the Championship - this one 0-0 at Blackburn Rovers.

It also finished scoreless at Vicarage Road against Preston North End in the Championship on Saturday, with Lewis playing the full game and putting a late chance narrowly wide.

Dylan Stephenson (South Shields):
The Mariners hit seven goals without reply at home to Bishops Stortford in National League North on Saturday - with Dylan contributing a brace.

Michael Ndiweni (Annan Athletic):
A 1-3 home loss to Hamilton Academical in Scottish League One on Saturday saw Michael complete the first half and pick up a booking. He failed to reappear for the second half.

Garang Kuol (Volendam)

Friday brought confirmation - a week later than expected - of the Premier League's live UK TV selections for the first weekend in May.

Newcastle's visit to Turf Moor isn't among those selected and therefore remains as a 3pm kick-off on Saturday May 4th.

That leaves news of two games still awaited:

Along with the rest of the league, our final day visit to Brentford will be a 4pm KO on Sunday May 19th.

Strike updates

Planned walkouts of London tube drivers affiliated to the ASLEF union on Monday April 8th and Saturday May 4th have now been called off.

Meanwhile, ASLEF have announced a one day strike affecting LNER only on Saturday April 20th and an overtime ban from Friday April 19th to Sunday 21st.

That doesn't coincide with any NUFC fixture.

Update:
Country call for Kuol

Currently on loan at Dutch league basement club Volendaam but struggling for pitch time there, United's Garang Kuol has unsurprisingly been released to answer a call-up by Australia's U23 side.

The Olyroos are one of 16 participants in the U23 Asian Cup finals staged in Qatar between April 15th and May 3rd. They are in Group D along with the host nation and will play their group games in Doha:

Mon 15.04.2024 Jordan
Thu 18.04.2024 Indonesia
Sun 21.04.2024 Qatar

Kuol - who is joined by elder brother Alou in the squad - earned a call-up after helping Australia reach the final of the WAFF (West Asian Football Federation) Championships in Saudi Arabia last month.

The top three sides in the competition will earn a place in the Olympic Football tournament in Paris between July 24th and August 9th. The side that finishes fourth enters a qualification playoff.

Update
:
Strip club

Newcastle United kit sponsors SELA have confirmed that a special one-off shirt will be worn by the team in the Premier League home game against Spurs this coming Saturday.

The Saudi-Arabian event management company are to donate the front of shirt advertising to an as-yet undisclosed charity for that game.

Update:
Sandro D-Day

The deadline for a response by Sandro Tonali to FA charges arising from multiple breaches of football betting rules was Friday (5th).

The Italian midfielder is currently suspended from all forms of football until August 27th 2024 - just under a fortnight after the next PL season kicks off.

Black & white army:

Recently released by Lower Block is "Toon Army 1996" a collection of photographs taken at Newcastle games during the 1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons.

Rather than Lee, Shearer or Ferdinand though, the stars of photographer Keith Pattison's images are the Newcastle fans themselves, as he turned his camera away from the pitch to document crowd scenes.

Exhibited in the Laing Gallery and appearing in poster form on bus stops across the region many years ago, 30 black and white photographs are featured in this 44 page, limited edition soft cover A5 publication.

Books cost £8.50 plus postage and can be ordered now online here. A limited number are also available from the Back Page shop.

A run of prints are planned - anyone with an interest in those can register at [email protected]

We had two copies to give away and asked you to name the side that we faced in the final game of both the 1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons.

It was Nottingham Forest - May 1996 being the Stuart Pearce testimonial and May 1997 a PL game - we didn't say competitive....

Winners were Christopher Diball and Dave Stewart (not that one).

2023/24:
Academy switches

News from Teesside that Newcastle's U18 league visit to Boro has a new date, kick-off time and venue.

Originally an 11am start at Hurworth on Saturday May 11th, the game has been switched to the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday May 8th with a 7pm start.

That's one of two forthcoming evening league games for the U18s; a home meeting with Liverpool at Whitley Park set for Tuesday April 16th at 7pm.

PS: The U18s visit to Wolves later this month has a new date, moving back a week from Saturday April 13th to Saturday April 20th. Kickoff remains 11am.

Giveaway:
Wor Bella winners

Following a successful tour of the region two years ago, Wor Bella returns to the stage in both London and Newcastle later this month.

Playwright Ed Waugh's work about the prolific female footballer Bella Reay runs at Clapham's Bread & Roses Theatre for three nights from Monday April 22nd, switching to Newcastle's Theatre Royal for a trio of shows over the following weekend.

More details/bookings online here

Ed's play centres on Bella's starring role for Blyth Spartans Ladies in the 1918 Munitionettes Cup final, played before an aggregate crowd of 22,000 fans at Gallowgate and Ayresome Park.

We had a pair of tickets for each venue to give away and asked what the Palmers company of Jarrow that Bella also played for manufactured.

The answer was ships and correct answers were received and randomly selected from the following:

Newcastle winner: Paul White
London winner: Graham Hammonds

From the BBC's Wolves v West Ham match coverage:

"James Ward-Prowse is the first player to score a goal directly from a corner in the Premier League since Dwight McNeil did so for Everton in a 4-1 away win against Newcastle United on 27 April 2023."

All fine and dandy, except that game was a 4-1 win FOR Newcastle AT Everton....

On This Day in History

Born Or Died:

1889 Arthur Metcalf born, Seaham.
(1909-12)

Inside right who began his career in local league football and was playing for North Shields Athletic when United paid £100 for his services in April 1909.

Arthur debuted in a 3-3 draw at Bradford City the following March and his first goal for the club was struck against Bury at SJP in March of 1911.

Moving on to join Liverpool at the end of the 1911/12 season, United made a £50 profit on the deal and Metcalfe was a regular scorer for the Reds before sustaining an injury against the mackems.

Returning to fitness he played on until Football League fixtures were suspended due to WW1 in 1915, appearing thereafter in local Lancashire league games for Liverpool.

Later transfers saw Arthur appear in the colours of Stockport County, Swindon Town, Accrington Stanley, Aberdare Athletic and Norwich City.

Returning to Merseyside, Arthur worked as an Anfield gateman but passed away in February 1936 after a short illness.

1890 Edwin Dutton born, Mittenwalde, Germany.(1910-12)

Serving FC Britannia and BFC Preussen in Germany, centre forward Edwin was capped for Germany against Hungary shortly before Newcastle encountered him during May 1909, as they toured continental Europe.

However it took until August 1910 for Dutton to appear for the club, in a practice game at Gallowgate.

Contemporary reports noted him as being:

"The son of an English athletic outfitter in business in Germany, who came over specially from the Fatherland for the game and showed excellence at centre, shooting with splendid accuracy".

Agreeing a contract at SJP in October of that year. Edwin featured at reserve level and then joined United's end-of-season tour to Germany and Switzerland in May 1911.

However he failed to carve out a place in the first team and returned to Germany following a brief spell with Bristol City in 1912.

Arrested in Berlin during November 1914 and interned in Ruhleben civilian detention camp, Edwin played football alongside internees including England international Steve Bloomer (coaching in Germany at the outbreak of war) using his family connections to provide strips and equipment for those games.

Returning to England in 1919 and marrying the daughter of Magpies trainer Jimmy McPherson, Dutton coached Ipswich Town between 1927 and 1932, later working as a chiropodist and masseur on Tyneside.

His death was recorded in Cheshire during May 1972.

1993 Death of Bobby Mitchell, 68.
(194-61).
Gallowgate's wizard of the wing and quite simply one of our all-time greats.

48 hours after defeating the league leading mackems 1-0 at Goodison, Everton lost by the same margin to Newcastle as Alex Gardner knocked home Tom Niblo's early cross.

The Liverpool Mercury reporter concluded that, "to say that the result was a surprise to the crowd, is putting the fact mildly, but the better team won, and Everton were vanquished solely on account of their wretchedly indifferent efforts."

An eventful Easter Saturday at SJP saw old boy Albert Stubbins forced off by injury in the 28th minute and outfield player Frank Houghton take over in goal on 66 minutes for United, after Jack Fairbrother dislocated an elbow.

Victory over the title-chasing Scousers left United with an outside chance of finishing top themselves. However, the Magpies would have to be content with fifth - three points ahead of eventual champions Portsmouth.

Newcastle went ahead when Vic Keeble flicked on a Len White corner and ex-Toffees amateur George Hannah finished.

The home side soon levelled but were often caught out by an offside trap that reduced the Good Friday crowd at Goodison Park to a slow handclap at one point in proceedings.

Liverpool-born Hannah then centred for Keeble to head home the winner from close range and end United's five game winless league run.

A three game losing sequence was ended in some style against the Millers, with Barrie Thomas hitting his second hat-trick of the campaign.

Sadly though it was only witnessed by a sparse crowd that was less than a third of that which had seen Leeds win 1-0 at Gallowgate in the previous home game, on Good Friday.

The mackems badly needed a win to quell their relegation fears while United were well on the way to securing mid-table obscurity.

A vital win that kept United out of the bottom four - the team finishing 19th that season being involved in a the play-off with three Division Two sides.

Kevin Drinkell gave the Canaries the lead but United levelled through Paul Goddard shortly before half time.

The second half was all one way traffic, with Steve Bruce in the visitors defence failing to stem the tide of goals, deflecting Gazza's shot and conceding the penalty.

Destined to remain the stuff of nightmares, as David Batty appeared to have secured the points on his Ewood Park return to boost our title challenge.

And then a certain Graham Fenton appeared.

Prompted by fellow Geordie, Alan Shearer, the 71st minute substitute twice beat Shaka Hislop late on, to leave Newcastle six points behind Manchester United with a game in hand.

An unbowed Kevin Keegan insisted that "It's definitely not over", but coming just five days after our 3-4 Anfield loss, his side ultimately had just too much ground to recover.

A battling and hard-working performance in Holland earned United a decent 1-1 draw to take back to SJP

It was a result that looked pretty good before kick-off and even better when Mateja Kezman gave PSV the lead. But Jermaine Jenas got the final touch on a Laurent Robert free-kick for a vital away goal.

2006 Newcastle's U18s scored three late goals to claim a 3-1 home win at Little Benton - but Crewe left unsure whether they'd been to the North East or the North Pole, after experiencing incredible weather conditions.

The game began in a downpour, continued in gathering gloom and ended in driving snow, as the Railwaymens' points were well and truly frozen.

Moore gave Alex the lead but Andy Carroll, Paul Huntington and James Troisi replied.

2010
The U18s drew 1-1 with Aston Villa at Villa Park in the first leg of their FA Youth Cup semi-final in front of 2,457 fans.

Phil Airey's opener was cancelled out by Kofi Poyser but a questionable offside flag then saw Brad Inman's effort ruled out.

That decision proved costly for United, who lost the second leg 0-1 at SJP.

2013 The U21s extended their unbeaten run to seven matches with a deserved 2-0 home win over Norwich City. Brandon Miele and Michael Richardson netted.

United got on the scoresheet when substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic's shot was blocked and Jonjo Shelvey netted the rebound.

However, Shelvey wastefully drove his late free kick from a dangerous position into the defensive wall, ending any faint hopes of an undeserved point.

2019 A 3-2 victory at the Bet365 Stadium sealed a promotion playoff place for the U23s - but only after allowing hosts Stoke City to take a two goal first half lead.

A brace from Owen Bailey book-ending one from Yannick Toure turned the game around, Bailey making amends for missing a spot-kick when his side were 0-1 down.

A second half penalty conversion by Chris Wood was enough to give Newcastle their fourth successive home win - drawing a line under a demoralising run of three successive away defeats in the process.

The New Zealand international striker had seen a first half effort rightly ruled out for offside by a VAR review, but drew a foul from Wolves 'keeper Jose Sa and then rammed the spot kick into the Gallowgate End net.

An imperious strike from Alexander Isak gave United their third victory in just six days and a fifth in succession; regaining third place after Manchester United had fleetingly occupied it.

Trailing 0-1 at the break - although that could have easily been 0-3 - United made a rather better fist of the second period, levelling when Bees custodian David Raya diverted Joelinton's cross into his net and taking the lead minutes later.
