FAC date confirmed

Newcastle will make the short trip to their wearside foes in the Third Round of this season's FA Cup on Saturday January 6th with a 12.45pm kick-off and will be live on ITV1, UTV, STV and ITVX.

Away allocation of tickets and prices are still awaited.

Re: ticket allocations, the away club are theoretically entitled to take 15% of the capacity but subject to approval by the stadium Safety Advisory Group.

In other words, in excess of 7,000 tickets could be allocated, but there's absolutely nothing guaranteed.

Replays continue in the Third Round this season - recent media reports have claimed that they will be scrapped, but that's from 2024/25 onwards.

2023/24:
Spurs (a)

Sunday sees Newcastle back in London as they face Spurs in the Premier League.

It's a 4.30pm kick-off live on Sky Sports and all away section tickets have been sold.

Team
:
Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes, Sven Botman, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff, Javier Manquillo, Jacob Murphy, Nick Pope, Matt Target, Sandro Tonali, Joe Willock and Callum Wilson are all sidelined.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Longstaff could be in the squad for Sunday and there's some optimism that Botman and Wilson will be back in the near future, but no firm dates as yet.

Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles remain one PL booking away from an automatic one game ban.
In order to avoid that fate they'll need to avoid censure in the club's next four PL fixtures.

Lascelles left the field in the closing stages of the 0-3 defeat at Everton on Thursday but is expected to be available for the trip to Spurs.

2023/24:
Senior Cup tie
off

Newcastle's Senior Cup quarter-final tie against Bedlington Terriers on Wednesday was called off less than an hour before kick-off by the referee.

Although passable during the day, a reduction in temperatures nearer to kick-off saw the Whitley Park surface deemed unfit for play.

No new date has been announced.

Update:
Pope blow confirmed

Facing the media on Wednesday morning, Magpies boss Eddie Howe confirmed that the dislocated shoulder suffered by goalkeeper Nick Pope will rule him out for a considerable time:

"Nick has had a couple of appointments visiting specialists, we are awaiting final news on what’s going to happen with him.

"There’s no doubt he will need an operation so he will be out for a period of time. Roughly out for four months but it is something we expected straight after the game. It is a big blow to us.

(It's) the same shoulder (that he injured at Burnley in 2018), but a different part of the shoulder. The old injury is fine.

"There was no reason for that happening, it’s just an unfortunate set of circumstances leading to that happening.

"He is naturally down. Nick had the Euros ahead of him and there is still a chance for him. His main determination is to come back with us.

"We're thinking of him because it's another strange injury for us."

On Martin Dubravka:

"I've always had a high opinion of him. Martin is a high class goalkeeper, a brilliant shot-stopper and very good with his feet too so there's no hesitation about bringing him into the team."

On talk of incoming signings:

"I've seen a lot of media headlines regarding goalkeepers and other players. We have not made any enquiries. If we were to recruit now we'd be recruiting in every area on the pitch.

"It's a chance for the other keepers to consolidate their positions."

It remains to be seen whether Pope's recovery has progressed to an extent that he retains his place in United's 25 man squad for the latter half of the season when it is submitted in early February.

Aside from Dubravka, United have senior 'keepers Lorius Karius and Mark Gillespie on the books.

20 year-old Scotland U21 international Jude Smith has been the main U21 custodian in PL2 this season, with 16 year-old Aidan Harris featuring in the EFL Trophy. Harris was also on the bench for United's Champions League trip to Milan back in September.

Irish youth international Reece Byrne hasn't yet featured for the club since signing from Bohemians in August while fellow 19 year-old Max Thompson is currently out on loan at Northampton Town.

U18s
Youth Cup date set

Newcastle's FA Youth Cup Third Round tie against Leyton Orient is now confirmed as a Noon kick-off on Tuesday December 19th at Whitley Park.

As a consequence of that, a further new date will need to be found for the U18 Premier League visit to Manchester City that had been rearranged then.

The reward for the winners of that Third Round tie will be a home meeting with Bournemouth in Round Four.

Update
Loan defender KO'd

On-loan Magpie Harrison Ashby has returned to Tyneside for further assessment of the hamstring issue that affected his availability for Swansea City.

The 22 year-old defender made a season-long switch to the Championship side and has played 11 league games (10 starts), but limped off in the early stages of last weekend's 2-2 home draw against Hull City.

On This Day in History
8th December

Born Or Died:

1884 Wilf Low born, Aberdeen.
(1909-33 player, trainer, groundsman)

Scottish international centre half who moved to Tyneside in May 1909 in a part exchange deal involving Jimmy Soye and £800.

Debuting in a 1-0 home win over Bolton in September of that year, Low played in both FA Cup Final meetings with Barnsley in 1910, the second of which ended in victory.

Wilf then added a runner's up medal to his collection the following year after playing in both Final ties, against Bradford.

Serving with the Royal Engineers during World War 1 and guesting for Fulham, Wilf returned to play on for a further five seasons at Gallowgate before retiring in 1924.

Remaining with the club to coach the Swifts, Low was later appointed SJP groundsman but met a tragic end when killed in a road accident on Tyneside during April 1933.

1912 Clarence Alfred Theaker born, Spalding, Lincolnshire. (1938-47)

Goalkeeper known as "Cam" whose career at SJP was badly affected by WW2, with only one of his competitive appearances for United coming after the conflict.

Beginning his career at his hometown club, Theaker made his league debut for Grimsby, later appearing for Darlington and Lincoln in wartime football as well as Newcastle.

Cam's final move took him to Hartlepools and he settled in the town after retiring, passing away in February 1992.

1914 Billy Leighton born, Walker.
(1932-38)

Inside right signed from local football at a cost of £25 in February 1932 who had to wait 12 months for his debut, in a 2-0 win over Chelsea at St.James' Park.

After spells in the Magpies first team over the following five seasons, Billy moved on to Southend United for £1,000 in May 1938.

The outbreak of World War II truncated his career with the Shrimpers, although he did act as player-manager for Ecko Sports & Social club in nearby Prittlewell when his army service allowed.

1945 found Billy garrisoned at Colchester and playing four times for the U's before hanging up his boots. He passing away in 1981.

1951 Terry McDermott born, Kirby.
(player 1973-74, 1982-84,
Asst Mgr/coach 1992-99, 2004-08)

Twice a player for the Magpies and twice returning to Gallowgate as a coach, Terry's first Tyneside stint began in February 1973, signed from Bury at a cost of £25,000.

Blooded at reserve level, he appeared from the bench during a 1-2 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford  before a first start came the following Saturday in a 1-1 home draw with Chelsea.

Playing for the Magpies in their 1974 FA Cup Final defeat by Liverpool, McDermott was an Anfield player by November of that year, sold on at a cost of £175,000.

However, it took him until 1976 before he became a first team regular, winning the first of four First Division Championship medals.

Representing both club and country with Kevin Keegan, Terry followed him to SJP in 1982 and made an immediate impact as KK scored four in a 5-1 success at Rotherham.

Two seasons back on Tyneside ended in promotion back to the top flight - and a return to Anfield along with Kevin Keegan in a memorable but one-sided FA Cup defeat.

Winding down his career at Cork City and APOEL Nicosia, McDermott returned to Newcastle in 1992 as assistant to Kevin Keegan as the side avoided relegation - having been working in a catering business that supplied sports venues.

And he was to remain on Tyneside after KK's departure in January 1997, taking caretaker charge of the side at Aston Villa with Arthur Cox and then assisting new manager Kenny Dalglish - another ex-Anfield colleague.

The arrival of Ruud Gullit spelt the end for McDermott and he next appeared on the staff at Celtic (with John Barnes & Kenny Dalglish at the helm) in July 1999, rejoicing in the job title of "social manager".

McDermott was out of football again until Bobby Robson departed from SJP in 2004 and he returned as assistant to ex-Liverpool team mate Graeme Souness the following January.

Remaining in post during the reigns of both Glenn Roeder and Sam Allardyce, he was there to greet Kevin Keegan for his managerial return in January 2008.

Two months later he commented in an interview that: "I get called ‘The Black Box’ because they can’t get rid of me - they’ve all had a go."

However, by September he was gone, having remained at the club following the departure of Kevin Keegan - only to be relieved of his duties shortly afterwards.

The difference this time was the presence of Mike Ashley - now-departed chairman Freddy Shepherd a supporter of McDermott during his time in the boardroom.

Almost inevitably though, Terry's path would cross with Newcastle again, as he joined the Toon old boy's club at Huddersfield Town, under the command of Lee Clark.

And after the Terriers hosted the Magpies in pre-season, the two sides were paired in the League Cup - giving McDermott his first taste of life as a coach in the away dugout at SJP.

Clark's surprise exit in February 2012 also saw Terry go and the duo resumed their partnership at second tier Birmingham City.

However, McDermott departed in February 2014 as Clark overhauled his backroom staff in a vain attempt to save his own post.

Sadly, it was announced in 2021 that Terry had been diagnosed with dementia.

His sons Neale and Greg (also midfielders)  both followed their dad's example in donning black and white at junior/reserve level - although neither made it to the first team.

1966 Les Ferdinand born, Notting Hill, London. (1995-97)

QPR paid non-league side Hayes the princely sum of £15K in 1987 to sign a part-time footballer who earned his wage as a painter and decorator in west London.

In his early years there weren't too many signs of Ferdinand's future striking prowess, the former schoolboy goalkeeper loaned to Brentford to get pitch time.

A further loan - to Turkish side Besiktas - was to kick start his career though and Les became a first team regular on his return to Loftus Road.

And with speculation increasing about a move, Ferdinand kept scoring against Newcastle but remained at the Hoops.

Eventually he agreed a move to SJP rather than Aston Villa, signing in the summer of 1995 at a cost of £6m.

Pre-season goals at Rushden & Diamonds, Celtic, Gateshead & Spurs were then followed by a fine debut strike at the Gallowgate End in a home win over Coventry.

That was to be the first of a half century of Toon goals in just 85 appearances, with Ferdinand defying the critics to form a deadly partnership with Alan Shearer the following season (although Kevin Keegan's initial plan had been to play Les with Andy Cole).

The start of the 1997/98 season saw Les in the side and appearing in pre-season games. However behind the scenes all wasn't well, with the club now a PLC and working to a new set of financial restrictions.

Manager Kenny Dalglish was forced to offload Ferdinand and with Everton and Sheffield Wednesday showing an interest, the player quickly agreed to join Spurs - his boyhood favourites.

Shortly after the deal had been verbally agreed however, Shearer catastrophically injured himself in a pre-season friendly at Goodison Park and word was sent to stop Ferdinand's transfer.

Understandably piqued at being dumped by United, Ferdinand rightly refused to pull out of the move - having given his word to Tottenham boss Gerry Francis.

His first return to SJP was a memorable one, as Les and his fellow former Magpie colleague Ruel Fox missed the start of the second half - after getting stuck in the away team's toilet.

The England international then left the field clutching Temuri Ketsbaia's Newcastle shirt and close to tears at the ovation given to him by home fans.

Later moves took him to West Ham, Leicester City, Bolton Wanderers and Reading, after which he trained with Watford but never registered as a player.

Working in the media, Les later became a coach at Spurs; warmly welcomed at SJP in 2006 for Alan Shearer's testimonial. He'd received an MBE a year earlier.

Subsequently facing United at first team, reserve and junior level as part of the Spurs backroom staff and then assistant to Tim Sherwood, Les returned to another former club, QPR, as Director of Football in 2014.

After almost a decade at Loftus Road that included a short stint as caretaker boss, Ferdinand stepped down in June 2023.

Ex-Magpie duo Tommy Thompson and Johnny Dixon scored against their old side only for John Duncan to net his first United goals and salvage a point.

Nominally a full back, John played as an emergency centre forward, after Jackie Milburn was ruled out of the game through injury.

Home manager George Martin's last act before quitting as boss of Newcastle had been to sign Duncan from Ayr United.

In goal for Villa was Con Martin - father of future Magpie Mick - who was routinely a full back but had a run of games between the posts due to a lack of suitable alternative custodians at the club.

The high-flying Rams came to Tyneside with a slender 1-0 first leg lead, but Newcastle wiped that out by the hour mark before the visitors scored again to take the tie into extra time.

John McGovern then beat Iam McFaul direct from a corner before Colin Todd sealed the win for Derby - who went on to beat Scottish side Airdrieonians in the final.

Unbelievably this was our sixth meeting with the Blues in less than two months - two in the League Cup, three in the Texaco Cup (one being abandoned) and this league encounter.

Midfielder Denis Laughton played the first of his eight games for the club after having arrived from Greenock Morton.

The medial ligament injury sustained at Kenilworth Road by Mick Martin proved to be a turning point in the season as United gradually lost form and dropped out of the promotion race.

Chris Waddle netted a fine individual goal that was to ultimately lead to him moving to White Hart Lane the following summer.

United led until John Chiedozie tumbled in the box under the slighest contact from Wes Saunders and won the penalty that woke the home side from their slumbers.

Roger Milford officiated this weekday afternoon encounter at the San Nicola Stadium which saw United well beaten and thankfully eliminated from the competition.

Captain Brian Kilcline headed in from a corner only to see it disallowed, the Appleby brothers, Matty and Richie appeared together in the senior side for the first time and there was a rare outing for John Watson.

2003 Kenny Miller scored twice for the home side as Wolves Reserves beat our lot 2-0 at Telford's Bucks Head ground.

United reserves ended their 2009 programme with a single goal defeat to Grimsby Town at Blundell Park.

The loss was controversial, with the match referee awarding the visitors a late spot kick - only to then change his mind.

2010
Chris Hughton's replacement as United manager was confirmed as the former Reading, West Ham, Charlton and Southampton boss, Alan Pardew.

Bewilderment amongst fans soon gave way to fury, Pardew seen as bringing nothing to the club that Hughton lacked - arriving in an atmosphere of renewed hostility of the type that had helped destabilise the club with disastrous consequences in 2008/09.

And in further echoes of 2008, there were calls for fan-led protests inside and outside SJP before and during the visit of Liverpool.

2017 United U23s defeated basement side West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at Whitley Park.

A small crowd braved sub-zero temperatures and were rewarded with a brace from Callum Roberts during the second half - the first coming from the penalty spot.

A goal down and in need of a lift, the introduction of Andy Carroll from the bench proved to be pivotal for United.

Playing his 100th senior game for the club, Carroll added a physical and aerial threat and provided a fine cross for Shelvey's leveller.

Federico Fernandez was then in the right place to win it from close in, after Sean Longstaff's shot struck Saints 'keeper, Alex McCarthy.

Newcastle kicked off their preparations for the seasonal restart with an emphatic victory over Saudi Arabian opposition in Riyadh.

Goals from Joelinton (2), Miguel Almiron (2) and Dylan Stephenson saw United collect the Diriyah Season Cup at the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium.

It may have been a meaningless kickabout, but Jamaal Lascelles held the spectacular trophy aloft with an enthusiasm sadly not repeated later in the season at Wembley.
