2023/24:
Cottagers in the Cup

The Met police proposal for another bubble match....

The final ball pulled out in Monday's FA Cup Fourth Round draw was number 15, sending the Magpies to fellow Premier League side Fulham.

Fourth Round ties are scheduled to take place over the weekend of Saturday January 27th.

Newcastle will have a fortnight to prepare after facing Manchester City at SJP in the Premier League this Saturday. They then visit Aston Villa on Tuesday (30th).

Fulham travel to Anfield in the first leg of their Carabao Cup Semi-Final this Wednesday, then make the short trip to Chelsea in the PL on Saturday.

Following a free weekend, Liverpool then visit Craven Cottage on Wednesday (24th) in the Carabao Cup before Fulham host Everton in the PL on Tuesday (30th).

That would appear to make our FA Cup tie certain to be played on Saturday 27th (KO tbc) unless Fulham were made to play twice in three days.

The first PL meeting of the Magpies and Cottagers this season ended in a 3-0 victory for Eddie Howe's side, with the return in SW6 scheduled for April.

This will the fifth time that the clubs have played each other in this competition and United have a 100% record to date:

1907/08 won 6-0 (n) SF
1909/10 won 4-0 (h) R2
1955/56 won 5-4 (a) R4
1960/61 won 5-0 (h) R3

The Magpies have won each of their last three visits to Craven Cottage (4-1, 2-0, 4-0). All three games came in the Premier League.

NUFC last 10 Fourth Round appearances:

2019/20 Oxford United (a) won 3-2 replay (0-0 h)
2018/19 Watford (h) lost 0-2
2017/18 Chelsea (a) lost 0-3
2016/17 Oxford United (a) lost 0-3
2011/12 Brighton (a) lost 0-1
2009/10 West Bromwich Albion (a) lost 2-4
2007/08 Arsenal (a) lost 0-3
2005/06 Cheltenham Town (a) won 2-0
2004/05 Coventry City (h) won 3-1
2003/04 Liverpool (a) lost 1-2

Travel update: there are no scheduled engineering works on the Newcastle to London Kings Cross route during Fourth Round weekend.

Last-gasp Foxes
make their point

Leicester City U21s  2  Newcastle U21s  2

Newcastle U21s returned to action after the festive break on Monday night, facing Leicester City at their Seagrave training ground.

The Magpies drew first blood, going ahead through Dylan Stephenson in only the second minute.

City replied through Harvey Godsmark-Ford after 18 minutes only for Newcastle to regain the lead on 74 minutes when Ben Parkinson converted a James Huntley cross.

However the Foxes levelled again on four minutes into second half added time, Oliver Ewing's late strike from close range ensuring that the points were shared.

Team: Byrne, C.Thompson, A.Murphy (Hackett 76), McArthur, Heffernan, Carlyon (Stanton 65), Parkinson, Hernes (Ndiweni 89), Stephenson, Huntley (Scott 76), Diallo. Sub n/u: Janusz.

There was a belated competitive debut for 20 year-old goalkeeper Reece Byrne, who joined United from Bohemian last June.

Booked: McArthur

LCFC: Young, Cover, Wormleighton, Cartwright, Godsmark-Ford, Ali (Grist 82), Richards (Ewing 61), Joseph (Otchere 77), Thomas, Briggs, Maswanhise. Subs n/u: Doherty, Amartey.

Booked: Wormleighton, Richards, Maswanhise.

Referee: Abigail Byrne

Crowd: 210

The revamped format of PL2 means that this is the only time that the Foxes and Magpies are scheduled to face each other this season.

Update:

Defender extends

Newcastle confirmed on Monday that Fabian Schar had signed a contract extension keeping him at SJP until 2025.

The Swiss international turned 32 last month and is in his sixth season at the club after making a bargain £3m switch from Spaniards Deporto de La Coruna.

Schar was one of several defenders set to be out of contract later this year, along with Paul Dummett, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles and Javier Manquillo. News on their futures is awaited.

Matt Ritchie plus goalkeeping duo Mark Gillespie and Loris Karius also see their deals expire in 2024.

We simply asked you to predict the final score in Saturday's derby game and 3-0 proved to be very popular choice, exceeding only by number of you believing that we'd repeat our 2006 4-1 success.

From the correct 3-0 entries received, the one from Fred Malkin was randomly picked.

2023/24:
Bairns win again

Newcastle U18s  3  Wolves U18s  2

A quick-fire brace from Sean Neave and an 86th minute winner from Johnny Emerson extended Newcastle's season-long winning streak on home soil to five games on Saturday.

Team: Harrison, Charlton, Bailey, H.Powell, R.Powell, Palmer (Craggs 90+1), Neave (O'Donovan 90+1), Watts, Emerson, Sanusi, Brayson (Ferreira 16).
Subs n/u: Janusz, Durrant.

Booked: Watts

The Magpies face a stern test in their next game, when league leaders Manchester United are the visitors to Little Benton on Saturday (12.30pm).

The Red Devils have won all 10 games so far this season, scoring 34 goals and conceding just six. They have kept four consecutive clean sheets.

The first meeting of the two sides earlier this season ended in a 5-1 home victory at Carrington.

The Magpies return to Premier League action on Saturday, when the defending champions visit SJP.

It's a 5.30pm kick-off, live on TNT Sports.

Team: Callum Wilson remains sidelined while the thigh injury that forced Joelinton off during the FA Cup win at the mackems is predicted to keep him out.

MCFC: John Stones remains unavailable for selection while Erling Haaland is pencilled in to make his return from injury at Gallowgate.

This will be the third meeting of these two sides this season, with both having won one to date. City recorded a 1-0 PL success at the Etihad in August, Newcastle triumphing by the same scoreline the following month at SJP in the Carabao Cup.

Ahead of their visit to Tyneside, Pep Guardiola's side defeated Huddersfield Town 5-0 in the FA Cup Third Round on Sunday. Kevin De Bruyne made his return after a five month absence due to injury.

The Evening Standard seem to have an exclusive regarding our first signing of the latest transfer window:

(George Williamson, Alan Harker)

What's this all about then?
Click here for a rambling explanation of sorts....

On This Day in History
8th January

Born Or Died:

1884 Bob Blanthorne born, Rock Ferry, Birkenhead. (1908-10)

Centre forward who joined Liverpool from Birkenhead in November 1905, having begun his career at local side Rock Ferry.

A regular scorer for the Reds reserve side, he made two first team appearances in April 1907 - scoring once - but was transferred to Grimsby Town the following October.

Bob turned down the chance to sign for Hull City before joining Newcastle in May 1908 for a £350 fee. However his competitive club debut in the season opener against Bradford the following September ended in disaster.

Suffering a broken leg after just ten minutes of the game (some reports say the incident happened in the second half), The ten man Magpies went on to win 1-0 but Blanthorne never played for the first XI again

Returning to fitness and making a comeback for the reserves in January 1910, Blanthorne moved to Hartlepools United and scored on his debut against Carlisle in January 1911.

However, he managed just five more games before quitting due to injury. Later returning to the Birkenhead area, his death was recorded there during 1965.

1938 Bobby Ferguson born, Dudley, Northumberland. (1955-62)

Bobby became a Magpie during 1955 and his competitive senior debut came in a 3-1 home win over Manchester City in April 1956.

Finding his first team chances limited due to the consistency of Alf McMichael, Ferguson made 11 more appearances before joining Derby County in 1962.

Moving on to Cardiff City in 1966, a first stab at coaching combined with playing came with Barry Town in 1968 followed by similar stints at Newport County and Hereford United.

Joining the coaching staff at Ipswich Town during the 1971/72 season, Bobby worked with the reserve and youth teams, moulding a young Terry Butcher and along with fellow SJP old boy Charlie Woods steered Town to FA Youth Cup success in 1973 & 1975.

Rising to the position of assistant to Sir Bobby Robson, he took over at Portman Road when England came calling for Robson in 1982.

Leaving five years later, he managed Kuwaiti side Al Arabi, before returning to England and becoming assistant to Dave Mackay at Birmingham City.

Later scouting/coaching at Colchester United and Coventry City, Ferguson joined the mackems as assistant to Butcher in 1993.

Working as a scout until 2011, Bobby filed his last reports for ex-Tractorboy George Burley while he was Crystal Palace boss.

He lived in Suffolk until his death, during March 2018.

1949 John Cowan born, Belfast, Northern Ireland. (1967-73)

Left-sided midfielder who had represented his country at youth level when acquired at a cost of £300 from Belfast side Crusaders in February 1967.

Debuting in a 1-0 win at Burnley during November 1969 alongside fellow Northern  Irish players David Craig and Iam McFaul, Cowan. However, fitness problems then restricted "Seamus" to reserve outings.

A run of senior games in March 1970 was then followed by his first and only full international cap - a 1-3 defeat by England at Wembley Stadium (an earlier selection at U23 level was KO'd by a postponement).

John didn't feature again at first team level for United until August 1972 as he tried to overcome a knee injury that ultimately forced his retirement at the age of 27.

By then he was with Queen of the South, having taken a something of a circuitous route from Tyneside to Dumfries - featuring stops at Drogheda in Ireland, Darlington and South African side Lusitano.

Working in London, John later returned to the North East and founded Trendsetting Trophies in 1978. Succeeded by his son in 2008, the company provided miniature replicas of the Fairs Cup trophy to tie in with the 40th anniversary celebrations of the victory in 2009.

1950 Gordon Hindson born, Quaking Houses, Durham. (1968-71)

Another left-sided player who failed to establish himself at SJP after breaking through from the junior side, his only senior goal came in a 1-2 loss to Blackpool in 1970.

Gordon was an unused substitute in three of our four Fairs Cup ties in the same season, making it on to the field in the fourth and final game when he replacing David Ford in Hungary against Pecsi Dozsa.

He moved on to Kenilworth Road some six months after Malcolm Macdonald made the opposite journey and also appeared for Carlisle and Blackburn on loan before a brief spell in the USA with Hartford Bicentennials.

Returning to his native Durham in 1976, Gordon played for Evenwood and Consett, managing the latter after spells at Gateshead & Spennymoor United.

Newcastle advanced to the Fourth Round at Home Park thanks to Vic Keeble's first half shot, athough United Chairman Stan Seymour was less than impressed:

"We stole this match - our lads gave a very poor show.

"They looked early on as if they would win easily, but they eased their concentration and when players do that they find it hard to get going against such earnest rivals."

Andy Cole reacted first when Peter Beardsley's effort came back off a post to net his first FA Cup goal for United.

And Beardsley himself then broke his own personal duck in that competition for the club to ensure our progress.

Old boy Mick Quinn appeared as a second half substitute for City but he and Roy Wegerle (whose goal for Blackburn knocked us out a year earlier) were kept at bay by a defence including Sky Blue cup winner Brian Kilcline.

1997 In a statement, NUFC announced that Kevin Keegan had resigned as Manager.

Speculation over his replacement included his former Liverpool team mate John Toshack, and virtually anyone else you could think of.

Your correspondent's finger(s) made an appearance on the local TV news that night in a staged re-typing of the ingenious NUFC.com headline "Keegan Resigns" hours after it had appeared on the site.

Quite rightly they chose not to show any of the twaddle spoken to camera - fittingly that remains our sole TV/Radio appearance.

FA Cup humiliation reared its ugly head again as United were outplayed at Broadhall Way.

But worse than that was the needless and senseless sending off of Cheick Tiote within a few minutes of replacing Alan Smith when his side were already trailing by two goals.

Reserve striker Phil Airey made his first team bow while Joey Barton netted with a fabulous but meaningless late strike.

Amid post-match celebrations on the field, a home player was struck by a fan - initially wrongly reported to have been a disgruntled black and whiter, it subsequently transpired that some score settling between locals over a woman was the real reason.
