2023/24:
Bournemouth (h)

Saturday sees Newcastle host the Cherries in the Premier League. It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm start and sold out.

Eddie Howe will look to defeat his former side for the first time in the PL as Magpies boss, having failed to do so in three attempts to date.

Both PL meetings last season ended 1-1, while this season's visit to the Vitality Stadium was a 2-0 win for the hosts. Newcastle did defeat Bournemouth 1-0 at SJP in the Carabao Cup in December 2022.

United are without a victory in their last three PL home games - the last time they went four without claiming maximum points at SJP was the start of the 2021/22 campaign when they were winless in seven.

Team:
There's yet another fitness question mark over Callum Wilson, who looked in some discomfort at the final whistle on Saturday after wrestling with an opponent and is now said to be nursing a damaged pectoral.

Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson are nearing returns, but it's unclear whether either will be involved in this game. Jacob Murphy was on the bench at Forest but unable to feature after picking up calf injury during the warm-up - presumably he'll be available against the Cherries.

Nick Pope, Joelinton
, Matt Targett and Sandro Tonali remain out, while the game is expected to come too soon for Alexander Isak to be involved.

The threat of a two-match PL suspension continues to hang over Bruno Guimaraes, who is on nine bookings. Anthony Gordon is two PL yellow cards away from suffering the same fate.

Coral rate this match as follows:

NUFC win 5/6
The draw 29/10
AFCB win 29/10

New customers receive a £20 bet when staking £5 (T's & C's apply). Find Coral's markets online here

AFCB: Philip Billing will be suspended.

Ahead of their trip to Tyneside, Andoni Iraola's side were beaten 1-3 at Fulham on Saturday, extending their winless run in the PL to five games.

The Spaniard has occupied the away dugout at SJP previously, bringing his Rayo Vallecano side across to Tyneside for a friendly match in December 2022. The Magpies ran out 2-1 winners.

The Cherries have won four times on the road so far this season: notching up consecutive victories in November and December at Sheffield United (3-1), Crystal Palace (2-0), Manchester United (3-0) and Nottingham Forest (3-2). Draws came at Brentford (2-2) and West Ham (1-1) with the other six away games ending in defeat.

They've scored at least once in all but one of their fourteen league and cup games so far this season.

Update:
Rover and out

Following days of speculation, Newcastle's FA Cup opponents Blackburn Rovers parted company with Head Coach and ex-Mag Jon Dahl Tomasson on Friday.

Ex-Birmingham City boss John Eustace was installed within hours of Tomasson's departure and watched Saturday's 3-1 Championship win over Stoke City from the stands at Ewood Park.

While Newcastle play twice in the Premier League before their FA Cup tie, Rovers are in Championship action four times before hosting the black and whites:

Tue 13.02.2024 Birmingham City (a) lost 0-1
Sat 17.02.2024 Preston North End (a)
Tue 20.02.2024 Cardiff City (a)

The Borrowers:
Loan lads

Ryan Fraser (Southampton):

The Saints saw their 25 game unbeaten league and cup record decisively halted by Bristol City at Ashton Gate in the Championship on Tuesday.

The hosts were 1-0 up when Fraser arrived as a 64th minute substitute and then scored twice more before Southampton got one back in added time.

Jamal Lewis (Watford):
A full 90 minute shift for the left back on Tuesday, as Watford lost 2-4 to Norwich City in the Championship.

Matty Bondswell (Newport County):

Matty made his entrance from the bench in the 81st minute of a 1-3 home loss to Notts County in League Two on Tuesday.

Dylan Stephenson (South Shields):
The Mariners suffered a single goal loss away at Alfreton Town in the National League North on Tuesday. Dylan started on the bench and was called upon with 65 minutes gone and his side trailing.

Michael Ndiweni (Annan Athletic):
The on-loan striker was in the starting line-up on Tuesday night as Annan lost 1-2 at Alloa Athletic in Scottish League One.

Isaac Hayden (QPR):
Stoke City (a) Championship, Wednesday.

Rodrigo Vilca (Vozdovac):
The Serbs returned to action on Saturday after their mid-season break, losing 1-2 at Red Star Belgrade in the Super Liga. There was no sign of Vilca in the matchday squad but he did appear in recent training photos.

Garang Kuol (Volendam):
The Australian international had to be content with a place on the bench at home to PSV in the Eredivisie on Sunday. He appeared in the 78th minute with his side trailing 1-3; the final score was 1-5.

Yankuba Minteh (Feyenoord)
A 70 minute shift for Minteh on Sunday, as Feyenoord beat Sparta 2-0 at home to win the Rotterdam derby. Our man took his leave with the scoring complete.

Harrison Ashby (Swansea City):
Harrison's return from a hamstring issue proved to be short-lived and the on-loan full back is now sidelined again for "a few weeks" with "a muscular problem".

Jeff Hendrick (Sheffield Wednesday):
The midfielder was omitted from Wednesday's 25 man squad for the remainder of the season but remains on loan at Hillsborough. As the Owls only used 22 of the 25 slots, he can be re-added at any time.

Kelland Watts (Wigan Athletic):
Kell remains fit and available for the League One Latics but not currently in Shaun Maloney's plans.

Update
Chelsea dragger

From the BBC, Thursday:

A Chelsea "fan" who assaulted Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has been fined £807 and given a three-year football banning order.

Jordan Chidley, 25, ran on to the pitch during a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Stamford Bridge on 19 December.

Chidley admitted assault by beating and unlawfully going on to a playing area at a football match. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £323 and costs of £85 – totaling £1,215.

PS: The Leeds "fan" who confronted Eddie Howe on the touchline at Elland Road last April received a 12 week prison sentence, a six year football banning order and a life ban from Leeds United games.

35 year-old David Derbyshire pleaded guilty to common assault and unlawfully going on to a playing area at a football match.

Premier League:
Squad: no shocks

Following the closure of the transfer window, revised 25 man squad lists have now been submitted by all Premier League clubs for the rest of the season.

In Newcastle's case that was a relatively simple process; submitting the same 25 man list as in September less the names of Sandro Tonali (suspended) and Javier Manquillo (departed).

Update:

From NUFC, Friday:

Goalkeeper Max Thompson has extended his contract with Newcastle United until the summer of 2025.

The 19-year-old joined the Academy at the age of 11 and signed his first professional deal with the club in December 2021.

He has represented England at Under-18 level, keeping a clean sheet on his debut for the Young Lions in a 3-0 victory over Russia in 2021.

Thompson recently returned to Newcastle after spending the first half of this season on loan at Northampton Town in League One. He made 15 appearances for the Cobblers, keeping five clean sheets.

On This Day in History
13th February

Born Or Died:

1949 Geoffrey Owen Nulty born,
Prescot, Liverpool.(1974-78)

Defender/midfielder who began his career at St. Helen's Town, becoming an apprentice with Stoke City but being released by the Potters in 1968.

Offered a trial with Burnley, "Nutters" made a good impression in a youth team tournament out in Germany and was then handed a one year deal at Turf Moor.

Nulty was in the Clarets side beaten 2-0 at Hillsborough by Newcastle in the FA Cup Semi Final of March 1974 and by the end of that year had been transferred to Tyneside.

Boxing Day saw him make a winning Magpies debut in a 2-1 victory at Carlisle, with his next outing bringing him a first goal, in the FA Cup against Manchester City.

Nulty was also on target in the League Cup semi final second leg against Spurs in 1976, but missed the chance to skipper United in the final after sustaining a broken jaw against Bolton in the FA Cup.

Following our relegation in 1978, Nulty moved on to Everton at a cost of £40K, renewing his link with ex-Magpies boss Gordon Lee.

However he was never popular at Goodison Park and played only 32 games for them before being forced into retirement after sustaining knee ligament damage in a tackle with Liverpool's Jimmy Case.

That was in March 1980, with Nulty having just been approached by Carlisle United with a view to becoming player/manager at Brunton Park.

Toffees fans have since named him in their worst Everton XI and even had their own song for him during his playing days:

Don't blame it on Latchford, Don't blame it on Georgie, Don't blame it on Micky, Blame it on Nulty

Oh, I can't stand, I can't stand
I just can't stand Geoff Nulty
Oh, I can't stand, I can't stand
I just can't stand Geoff Nulty

Having studied for an Open University Degree in accountancy while playing, Nulty initially coached under Gordon Lee at Everton and followed him to Preston before opting to concentrate on a business career.

Beginning with what he called a "spit and sawdust" convenience store in St. Helens, Nulty then acquired various other businesses including a chip shop and other property investments in the North West.

His son Mark followed in his footsteps by playing in defence for St. Helens Town.

Two ahead against Division One opposition thanks to efforts from our strike duo in front of the Leazes End, United allowed future Magpie Stuart Pearce to give the visitors a foothold in the tie.

Steve Watson then agonisingly shot over the bar when looking certain to make it 3-1 and United were duly punished when Nigel Clough netted an equaliser in the dying seconds.

Forest made no mistake the following Monday at the City Ground as they swept to a 3-0 victory to set up a Fifth Round away tie at Southampton. Brian Clough's side would go on to lose in the Final to Spurs.

The Jack Walker revolution at Ewood Park began, as United fans stood on a roofless Darwen end that was soon to be demolished and rebuilt.

Manager Kevin Keegan was confined to home with the flu, and "Match of the Day" cameras were on hand to record an unadventurous display that nearly secured a replay before Roy Wegerle struck late on.

1999
Unwanted Magpies midfielder Des Hamilton went to Huddersfield Town on loan.

He would go on to make ten appearances in Division One (aka the Championship) for the Terriers, scoring once - away at Wolves.

2001 Wayne Quinn made his loan move to Tyneside permanent as United paid Sheffield United £800k for the left-sided player.

2002 Magpie duo Craig Bellamy and Gary Speed played for Wales against Argentina with the roof shut on Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

Bellamy opened the scoring in a 1-1 draw.

2006 Birmingham City's on-loan Newcastle midfielder Nicky Butt walked out after not being selected in the squad for their game against West Ham.

Reports suggested City boss Steve Bruce picked his lad Alex instead; father and son then soundly beaten 0-3 at the Boleyn Ground.

2008 Manager Kevin Keegan said this about Charles N'Zogbia, who was reportedly keen to move closer to his family in London:

"He’s just signed a new contract, but if he’s really homesick and wants to go, there isn’t much we can do. All we will do is try and convince him that if he leaves he will miss out on something.

"Players are scared of jumping off a big ship on to a littler one, they hate the idea of missing out on something. If, at the end of the day, he still says he doesn’t want to be here, and he’s not saying that at this stage, then we will have to consider what to do in the summer."

Less than a year later Charlie moved to that massive London club... errr... Wigan and then a big money move followed to that Cockney claret and blue club... Aston Villa....

A week after a 1-0 home win over West Bromwich Albion lifted them out of the bottom three, Newcastle were back in a relegation spot after their fifth successive away reverse.

Hapless Magpies boss Steve McClaren finally got something right, telling Sky the first 20 minutes of this Saturday night TV game would determine the outcome.

He was spot-on as his side were quickly 0-3 down, conceding two more before Andros Townsend notched a fine first for the club.

There was a debut from the bench for loan striker Seydou Doumbia, who contributed absolutely nothing.

For the second time in six days, Kieran Trippier was the toast of Tyneside as his expertly-dispatched free kick gave his side their third successive victory and lifted them four points clear of the drop zone.

Trippier brilliantly fired home after referee Craig Pawson's original penalty award for a foul on Joe Willock by Calum Chambers was downgraded to a free kick by VAR official Paul Tierney, who spotted that the offence was marginally outside the penalty area.
