The lively
lads return
Newcastle 3 Wolves 0

Match
action is online here
No VAR controversies, no extra time, no bookings, no penalties, no
goals conceded, three goals scored and three points made it a
pleasurable afternoon on Tyneside for Eddie Howe and his side
despite the heavy rain.
The Magpies boss celebrated his 100th Premier League career victory
as United made a timely return to their trademark pressing game,
ending a winless four game run at Gallowgate with their first home
success of 2024.
Wolves were unbeaten away from Molineux this year, arriving on the
back of eye-catching league wins at Chelsea and Spurs. However their
top scorers Hwang Hee-Chan and Matheus Cunha were both injured and
although looking dangerous in the opening exchanges, Martin Dubravka
wasn't seriously tested.
Making just one change from the starting line-up at Blackburn - Sven
Botman for Jamaal Lascelles - the hosts took a 14th minute lead when
a Bruno Guimaraes shot deflected off a defender and fell nicely for Alexander Isak
to head home at the Gallowgate End.
Dan Burn had the chance to double that lead but pulled his shot wide
soon after before another counter-attack from United on 33 minutes
ended with Jacob Murphy crossing from the right towards Isak; a
combination of goalkeeper and defender succeeding only in setting up
the arriving Anthony Gordon to slam in the loose ball.
Visiting custodian Jose Sa collided with the goal frame while
conceding the opener and failed to reappear after the break;
replacement Daniel Bentley nowhere near Joe Willock's diving header,
but a defender's boot doing just enough to send the effort wide of
the target.
Almost inevitably there would be a fresh injury concern for
Newcastle, Kieran Trippier pulling up and leaving the field to be
replaced by Tino Livamento.
Wolves had begun to commit more bodies forward in an attempt to gain
a foothold in the game as it entered the final quarter, Newcastle
taking the opportunity to bring on fresh legs in the shape of Miggy
Almiron, Harvey Barnes and Lewis Miley that swung the balance of
play back in their favour.
Chances of more goals at either end weren't greatly abundant -
although Dubravka made two stops of note and a fine no-look pass by
the lively Bruno gave Miggy the chance to test Bentley from close
in.
What was a morale-boosting afternoon ended on a high note in the
second minute of added time; Fabian Schar picking out Livramento
down the right and the full back running on into the Wolves box,
rounding one opponent and managing to force the ball into the net as
he clashed with defender Rayan Ait-Nouri.
The victory took Eddie Howe's side above their opponents and
Brighton up to eighth in the table.
More to follow.

Eddie Howe
said:
"Sometimes you just have to find a way to get over the
finishing line and you know then that there are better performances
ahead. I think we were in that moment today.
"I don’t think today was ever going to be a classic
Newcastle performance, but I think it’s a building bridge closer
to where we want to be.
"I thought Blackburn was very
similar. We got through, that was the main thing. Today was slightly
better again and I’d like to think now with the strength of the
group returned that we will hopefully see continued improvement in
performances.
"It
was a big win. We knew being back at home having not won for a
while... our home form has been so good since I came to the football
club.
"Staying up and making the
top four, our home form was the bed rock of all our success so to
have probably our first wobble here was a concern. We're delighted
to win today, it was a big win for us.
"We made a slight tweak to
our normal way of playing. We always analyse our opposition and I
know there are a lot of people who say we play the same way every
week but that's not the case, there is always tweaks and little
things we try to try and that was one today to maybe play slightly
more transitional."
On Kieran Trippier:
"He felt something in his calf and had to come off the pitch.
That is a concern for us. I don't know how serious it is."
On Fabian Schar:
"There won’t be many centre-halves like Fabby. He is a total
one-off, I think. He is a very good defender when he is absolutely
concentrated and really well-trained. He is as good a defender as I’ve
seen.
"He reads the game really well, and the interceptions that he
makes is second to none. But he would probably tell you that his
biggest strengths are on the ball, and he can see things and execute
things that I don’t see many other centre-halves capable of doing.
That’s why he’s so important to us.
"Maybe the pass for the first goal is slightly easier than the
pass for the last one. The pass for the last goal, I don’t think
anyone else in the stadium saw, apart from maybe Tino, because he’s
made the run. He maybe knows that Fabby is capable of playing him
in.
"They were moments of absolute class.”
On achieving a century of PL victories:
"Personal milestones are difficult to talk about because it’s
always about the club. But when I started out, if someone had said
you’d get 100 wins as a Premier League manager after starting in
League 2, I wouldn’t have seen that coming. So nice to hear!"
Referee:
Tim Robinson - a third Toon appointment
this season, after the 4-0 home win over Crystal Palace and 0-3
defeat at Everton.
VAR: David Coote.
Stats:
Newcastle kept their first clean sheet in seven league and
cup games, keeping their opponents at bay for the first time in no
less than 10 Premier League fixtures.
Alexander Isak moved on to 21 PL goals for the black and whites,
one less than Laurent Robert and two behind Kieron Dyer and team
mate Miguel Almiron. The Swede is our PL top scorer this season with
11 and clear ahead with 15 in all competitions.
Anthony Gordon now has 10 PL goals for United, a total
putting him level with current colleague Jamaal Lascelles and Leon
Best, Nicos Dabizas, Robbie Elliot, Paul Kitson and Aleksandar
Mitrovic.
Tino Livramento's debut goal for the Magpies made him the
168th different player to score in the PL. He's the 19th different
Newcastle player to net for the club in the PL so far this season.
Tino's only other senior strike came in the PL League for
Southampton at home to Burnley in October 2021, Nick Pope in goal
for the Clarets that day.
For the third successive PL game, one of Newcastle's
substitutes got on the scoresheet, following on from Matt Ritchie at
home to Bournemouth and Joe Willock away at Arsenal.
Isak's goal was Newcastle's 1,500th in the Premier League in
their 1,099th game in the competition.
Gordon's effort then brought up the 900 mark for the Magpies
in their 550th Premier League home game.

More home
discomfort

Newcastle U18s
1 'Boro U18s 3
It's now four home
defeats on the bounce for United's U18 side, their latest reverse
coming in a rearranged fixture at a damp Little Benton on Saturday
morning.
What proved to be a rare home foray in the opening half saw winger
Matheos Ferreira test visiting 'keeper Shea Connor after just three
minutes.
The Teessiders then opened the scoring with their first serious
attack Frankie Coulson
fired in from just inside the box with seven minutes played.
A low-key contest saw United reduced to ten men in the 64th minute when Harry Powell
received a straight red for a tackle on Prince Acheampong in the
centre of the field that left the visiting player shouting in pain.
Boro failed to make that numerical superiority count though,
punished with 11 minutes of normal time left when Logan Watts
scored in slightly bizarre
fashion.
The defender hit a speculative low shot from the edge of the box
that the bottom
corner of the net, 'keeper Connor presumably unsighted and rooted to
the spot.
That sparked a brief period of pressure from the black and whites
who made two substitutions as they sought to claim what would have
been an unlikely winner.
However, the Teessiders renewed their efforts and regained the lead in the first minute of
added time when Charlie Lennon slotted the ball between the 'keeper
and post from inside the area.
Four minutes later 'Boro got their third when substitutes Anton
Palmer and Moah Muwana combined to set up Coulson for his second,
netting from point-blank range.
Team: Harris, R.Powell, Watts, Milmore, Craggs, H.Powell,
Ferreira (Cogdon 86), Palmer (O'Donovan 64), Brayson, Neave, Emerson
(Bloomer 86).
Subs n/u: Ad.Harrison, Wooster.

Yankuba Minteh (Feyenoord)
Three goals now in two Eredivisie games for the on-loan Magpie,
after putting his side ahead in a 2-2 draw at PSV Eindhoven on Sunday.
He played 75 minutes.
Rodrigo Vilca (Vozdovac):
No sign of our lad once again as his current side lost 0-2 at home
to Spartak Subotica in the Serbian Super Liga on Sunday.
Isaac Hayden (QPR):
A stunning 2-1 win for the R's at table-toppers Leicester City in
the Championship on Saturday. Isaac completed the entire 90 minutes.
Jamal Lewis (Watford):
The Hornets lost 0-1 at Millwall in the Championship on Saturday, the only goal
coming in the third minute. Jamal
played the full game.
Dylan Stephenson (South Shields):
Shields lost 1-3 at King's Lynn in National League North on Saturday.
Dylan was in the starting line-up.
Michael Ndiweni (Annan Athletic):
Annan drew 1-1 at Falkirk in Scottish League One on Saturday.
Michael started and was subbed in the 59th minute when it
was goalless. Falkirk scored two minutes later but Athletic grabbed
a point in the fourth minute of added time.
Ryan Fraser (Southampton): A knee injury meant that Fraser missed the amazing 4-3 win at Birmingham City in the
Championship on Saturday.
Jeff Hendrick
(Sheffield Wednesday):
Hendrick wasn't in the squad for the 1-0 win at Rotherham in the
Championship on Saturday.
Harrison Ashby (Swansea City):
The Swans compounded a miserable week for Blackburn Rovers beating
them 2-1 in the Championship on Saturday. Harrison wasn't in the
squad as he returns to fitness following injury.
Kelland Watts (Wigan Athletic):
Watts wasn't in the squad for
the 2-4 loss at Fleetwood Town in League One on Saturday.
Matty Bondswell (Newport County):
No place for
Matty in the squad for the 0-1 home loss to Mansfield Town in League Two on
Saturday.
Garang Kuol (Volendam):
The Australian international was again named on the bench for
Friday's Eredivisie home meeting with NEC, remaining there as his
side were beaten 2-5.

Newcastle return to action when they
travel to Stamford Bridge for a Premier League fixture on Monday
(11th).
It's an 8pm kick-off live on Sky Sports.
Following United's 4-1 win at Gallowgate in November, Eddie Howe's
side have the chance to complete a league double over the Blues for
the first time since 1987.
To achieve that though, they'll need to register only a second PL
win on this ground in 28 attempts.
This will be our second visit here this season, following a 1-1 draw
and subsequent penalty shootout loss there in the League Cup during
December.

 Newcastle's FA Cup quarter-final
against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium will be played on Saturday 16th March with a 5.30pm kick-off.
The tie will be shown live on BBC1 and an outcome must be
achieved on the night. Ticket details are awaited but adult tickets
will be £35.
Quarter-finals:

Manchester City v Newcastle United (5.30pm) BBC1
Sun 17.03.2024:

Manchester United v Liverpool (3.30pm) ITV1
The two sides have already met twice in the Premier League this
season; United beaten 0-1 at the Etihad Stadium in August and 2-3 on
Tyneside in January.
Eddie Howe's side did get the better of Pep Guardiola's lot in this
season's Carabao Cup at SJP, winning 1-0.
The Magpies are unbeaten in cup
competitions at the Etihad - their sole visit to date a 2-0 League
Cup success back in October 2014. Less thrillingly, we've lost seventeen of our nineteen league
visits, drawing the other two. Since DeAndre Yedlin netted in 2018
we've endured 510 scoreless minutes at that venue.
City's home form in the FA Cup doesn't bode well; they have won all 12 ties there since losing 0-2 to Boro in 2015. Those
dozen victories have seen a total of 52 home goals scored and
conceding five.
This is Newcastle's fifth successive away draw in this competition
since losing to Cambridge United at Gallowgate back in January 2022.
Our most recent quarter-final tie came against City in June 2020,
the visitors winning 2-0 at Gallowgate behind closed doors due to
the pandemic.
This will be the second time that we've faced the Citizens in both
domestic cup competitions and the league during the same season:
Nov 1994 drew 1-1 (a) LC
Dec 1994 lost 0-2 (h) LC replay
Jan 1995 drew 0-0 (h) PL

As a consequence of our progress, the Premier
League trip to Crystal Palace scheduled for Saturday 16th has been
postponed.
(Looking further ahead, Newcastle's PL trip to Old Trafford in April
clashes with semi-final weekend).
As was the case on Tuesday, there's no provision for replays and an
outcome must be reached in the first meeting, via 30 minutes extra
time or penalties.
This
will be Newcastle's 29th appearance in the last eight of the FA Cup.
To date they have progressed 17 times and exited on the other 11
occasions.
It's their first quarter-final since 2020 - a 0-2 home loss
to Manchester City behind closed doors.
Four of the players from that tie featured at Ewood on Tuesday;
messrs Lascelles, Schar, Longstaff and Almiron. Dubravka and Krafth
were on the bench in 2020.
The last Magpie to score in a quarter-final tie was Patrick Kluivert
against Spurs at SJP in March 2005 - that 1-0 success our most
recent one at this stage.

Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes has been

Wembley and Spain at the Bernabeu this month.
The sold-out game in London is on Saturday March 23rd, moving on to

Meanwhile there's no place for Sven Botman in the Netherlands
squad for fixtures against Scotland and Germany. The defender has been called up previously but
is yet to win a senior international cap.

We had a full set to

A few folks mistakenly went down the SJP/Stamford Bridge

Most recalled that it was a pre-season kickabout at Goodison

the club has signed midfielder Matty Longstaff to a two-year

Released by Newcastle last summer, he's continued his rehabilitation

Caldwell.
Ex-Canadian national team Coach Herdman was born in Consett and is a
Newcastle fan. SJP old boy John Carver also served as their Coach

Whoops, He did it Again... |
The Guardian reporter covering our FA Cup tie at Blackburn must
have been watching on a black & white telly - we played in blue:
"When at last, Newcastle threatened in a goalmouth scramble no-one
in green - including Lascelles with his head - could poke the ball
home."
(Steve Dodds, Tony Brennan)
What's this all about then?

for a rambling explanation of sorts....

On This Day in History |
3rd March |
Born Or Died:
1886 James Edmundson Raine born, Newcastle (1903,1904-06).

Right-sided forward who was on amateur forms at SJP, having played
football while studying at both Harrogate and Sheffield.
Briefly with Newcastle in 1903, a longer association with the club came the
following year, after having played one senior game in the colours of
Sheffield United.
Debuting in place of Jackie Rutherford in a 1-0 loss at Middlesbrough in
March 1906, the player known as Joe featured in three more games that season
- netting his only goal in the last of those, a 3-0 home victory over
Blackburn Rovers.
Later appearing in the Football League for Sunderland and Glossop North
End, Raine also played for Bohemians (Newcastle), Reading, Stalybridge
Rovers and South Shields.
Playing cricket for Benwell and Northumberland county and also rugby for
Percy Park, he won international honours with the England amateur football
team.
Living in Jesmond after ending his playing days and managed the Raine family
steelworks on the banks of the Tyne, Jimmy rose to the rank of Major in the
Durham Light Infantry during WW1.
His unexpected death came while visiting the Swiss ski resort of Davos in September 1928.
An obituary published in The Journal referred to him as a "brave
soldier, sportsman and good employer."

1903
Duncan Hutchison
born, Kelty,
Scotland. (1929-32)
"Hurricane
Hutch" is
more revered by the
supporters of Dundee
United than
Newcastle, thanks to an
association with the
Tannadice club that
spanned some six
decades.
Signed from
Dunfermline in 1927,
his sale to The
Magpies two years
later for £4,050
led to protests and
match boycotts among
Dundee United fans.
Hutch partially
reproduced the
goalscoring form
that had brought him
to Tyneside, but
within a year of his
arrival had seen
fellow Scotsman
Hughie Gallacher
leave United - and
he proved to be a
tough act to
follow.
After spells at
Derby County and
Hull City, Hutchison
re-signed for Dundee
United in 1935 and
played on until
1939, running
"The United
Bar" in the
city upon his
retirement.
Appointed to the
Board at Tannadice
in 1953, he remained
in post until his
death in 1973 -
serving for a time
as their Chairman.
1933
Stewart Mitchell
born, Glasgow,
Scotland.
(1953-63)

Goalkeeper
signed from the
Govan-based Benburb
club who acted
as understudy at
various times to
Ronnie Simpson,
Bryan Harvey and
Dave Hollins.
His debut saw United
draw 3-3 at Preston
and he also conceded
four goals in each
of his next three
outings.
Mitchell returned to
Scotland with Third
Lanark as part of
the Dave Hilley
deal.
However, his transfer
didn't go through
until some eight
months after Hilley's arrival,
with Stewart
eventually moving to
Cathkin Park in lieu
of the proceeds of a
promised friendly
match against United
that was never
played.
Forced to quit the
game in 1965 due to
injury, Mitchell was
present at Ibrox to see
United's 0-0 draw in
the Fairs Cup four
years later.
Living in the
town of Hamilton
following his
playing retirement,
Stewart worked in
the financial
services sector. He
passed away in
January 2023.
 1990
Emmanuel Riviere, born, Le Lamentin, Martinique (2014-17)
 United's
fifth close season signing of summer 2014 saw this alleged striker arrive from AS Monaco for an undisclosed fee.
Riviere had left his home on the Caribbean island of Martinique - an overseas
territory of France - to join St.Etienne during 2005.
A senior debut came in April 2009 and his first selection for France at U21
level the following year saw him line up with future SJP colleague Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.
Making a £4.7m switch to Toulouse in July 2011, he played with Moussa Sissoko
there and was an U21 colleague of both
Massadio Haidara and Remy Cabella.
A mid-season move to Monaco (then in the second tier of French football) in
January 2013 cost of £3m and he scored four times to help
them win the title and promotion.
Emmanuel then netted thirteen times in the 2013/14 season (ten in Ligue 1)
including a hat trick against Montpellier as Monaco finished runners up to PSG.
Joining United on their pre-season tour of New Zealand, he made a scoring bow
in a 4-0 win over Sydney United in
Dunedin.
Riviere struggled in his first season, scoring just twice in
30 outings - in the League Cup at Crystal Palace and at QPR in the Premier
League, the latter something of a fluke.
Injury then sidelined him until January 2016, with a trio of unproductive
outings under Steve McClaren and three unused substitute selections by the
incoming Rafa Benitez
Shipped off to Spaniards Real Osasuna on a season-long loan during August
2016, Riviere failed to find the net in 17 appearances as they were
relegated.
The misfit was permanently jettisoned a year later though, securing his
release from United before signing for French side Metz.
Rather improbably he marked his debut with a goal against Paris St. Germain -
before reality intervened and he missed an open goal. PSG ultimately won the
game 5-1.
Released at the end of the 2018/19 season, the free agent secured a deal with
Italian Serie B side Cosenza where he was joined by our season-long loanee,
Achraf Lazaar.
Riviere left Cosenza and joined Serie A side Crotone in
September 2020, signing a two-year contract. However this was
terminated by the club in October 2021 for what they deemed
"serious
misconduct" after failing to return to the club.

Shola Ameobi's first goal was scored with his first touches after appearing as

At the other end Shay Given had one of his
quietest days with the visitors offering little or no attacking threat.
However, Obafemi Martins and Kieron Dyer couldn't make the vital breakthrough,
while Glenn Roeder delayed bringing Antoine Sibierski off the bench until near

On-loan Oguchi Onyewu partnered Titus Bramble in central defence, with an

2012 United confirmed that both Tim Krul and Fabricio

of 2017 and 2016 respectively.
2012 What proved to be the only senior competitive appearance in English
football for reserve winger Samuel Adjei came whilst loaned to League One
Hartlepool United.
Introduced as a second half substitute in a 1-1 home draw with MK Dons, the
Swedish winger sustained an injury that forced his hasty return to Tyneside.

2021 The Mail newspaper reported that:
"Steve Bruce and Matt Ritchie were involved in a sensational
training ground showdown in which the Newcastle boss physically
confronted the winger and barged into him after being called a 'coward'
by the player."
The incident came 72 hours after a 1-1 home draw with Wolves, when Bruce
had blamed Ritchie for not passing on instructions after arriving
from the bench - resulting
in Wolves
scoring.
Various media claims of tensions at the training ground emerged at the time,
notably the reaction of Karl Darlow to discovering via the press that he'd
lost his place in the side.
