for Wednesday April 24th. Kick-off is 8pm and it's not on live UK TV.

Confirmation also that the PL home game against Sheffield United wasn't selected for transmission. That remains a 3pm KO on Saturday April 27th.

Update:
More Metro disruption

In addition to the city centre Metro closure between March 29th and April 4th (see West Ham preview for further details), a further major outage on the system will take place later in April as follows:

Buses will replace trains between Benton and North Shields in both directions for seven days from Monday 8 April to Sunday 14 April,
while over 5.6km of overhead power lines are replaced.

Trains will be running frequently to all other stations but may not be to the usual timetable.

The replacement bus service number 900, will run between Four Lane Ends and North Shields in both directions.

You may find it easier to transfer between Metro and the replacement bus service at Four Lane Ends rather than Benton, as Four Lane Ends is an interchange station.

Train services between Four Lane Ends and North Shields will resume on Monday 15 April.

Latest:
Botman bombshell

From NUFC, Wednesday, here we go again....

Newcastle United defender Sven Botman will undergo surgery next week after suffering a knee injury against Manchester City.

Following further assessment, a scan has confirmed that he sustained an injury to his ACL during Saturday's match and he is expected to return to action within six-to-nine months.

The Dutch centre-back initially sustained a knee injury in September 2023 and elected for a non-surgical rehabilitation plan - a decision which saw him return to action in December.

The 24 year-old completed the entirety of the 8-0 victory at Sheffield United last September but then missed the home Carabao Cup win over Manchester City what was termed "a knock".

It later transpired that Botman's injury had come during the Brentford game and he'd completed that, the 0-0 draw away to AC Milan and the victory at Bramall Lane before realising the extent of it.

Ahead of the following weekend's PL visit of Burnley to Gallowgate, Howe told reporters that his absence would span the October international break.

Subsequent comments from Botman however suggest that was either ill-informed or disingenuous and he missed a total of 17 league and cup fixtures before returning at home to Fulham in mid-December.

Since then he's appeared in all but one of United's games in all competitions but struggled to recreate his previous form and looked anything but comfortable recently.

Although the wording of the NUFC statement suggests that the latest injury isn't the original September one, confirmation of this latest injury blow has triggered fresh speculation regarding the club's medical staff.

Speaking to Sky Sports at the turn of the year, Botman commented:

"Some people (specialists) said it was a total rupture, others said that it wasn’t, so I’ve done everything to rest & avoid surgery.

"The operation would’ve kept me out for nine months but I’m back & feeling like my old self again — so it seems like I made the right choice."

Whether that choice should have been the player's will inevitably now come under renewed scrutiny.

Fielding his "best XI" has eluded Eddie Howe for most of this season and even though it's still five months away, he now knows that neither Botman or Sandro Tonali will feature on opening day next time round.

And that figure could yet rise to three, depending on whether Alexander Isak does undergo surgery to rectify a groin issue as has been rumoured.

PS: News of Botman's absence will presumably mean that efforts to conclude a deal for Bournemouth's left-sided central defender Lloyd Kelly intensify - although he himself has missed the last five games due to an as-yet unspecified leg problem.

strikes called

Wednesday saw the train drivers's union ASLEF announce a further series of one-day strikes, along with a six-day overtime ban by their members.

Stoppages will take place over the weekend of April 6th, LNER action coinciding with Newcastle's Premier League visit Craven Cottage that Saturday.

An amended LNER timetable will be published in due course, while LUMO and Grand Central operators should be unaffected:

Sat 06.04.2024: Chiltern, GWR, LNER, Northern,  TransPennine Trains.

Sun 07.04.2024: none.

2023/24:
Toon down under

Newcastle have confirmed two post-season games in Australia, both to be staged in Melbourne as part of their Global Football Week.

United will face fellow Premier League side Spurs at the 95,000 seat Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Wednesday May 22nd at 7.45pm (local time).

On Friday May 24th they'll be in action at the 53,000 capacity Marvel Stadium against the A-League All Star Men. That's a 5.15pm kick-off and will be followed by a game between the A-League All Star Women and Arsenal Women at 8.05pm.

NUFC are yet to publish ticket information; Spurs have released an update online here

The MCG have ticket information online here

2023/24:
Meet the A-Team

While Spurs need no introduction, Newcastle's second opponents in Australia are rather less well-known.

As their name suggests, the A-League All Stars are selected from the playing squads of clubs currently playing in the premier Australian and New Zealand domestic competition, regardless of nationality.

They will assemble to face the Magpies for only the fourth time since first taking to the field in 2013:

2013 Man United (h) (Sydney) lost 1-5  83,127
2014 Juventus (h) (Sydney) lost 2-3  55,364
2022 Barcelona (h) (Sydney) lost 2-3  70,174

Current Magpie Garang Kuol (then of Central Coast Mariners) was a second half substitute in the 2022 game, catching the eye and gaining his first senior professional contract soon after. He's on the left of the picture above.

SJP old boy Curtis Good (Melbourne City) was in the initial 30 man selection to face Barcelona, but wasn't one of the 20 players who got any pitch time.

As was the case in 2022 however, the All Stars won't be able to call upon players from clubs competing in the A-League Grand Final that weekend.

The first two A-League games were played in the pre-season period, avoiding a similar clash.

Newcastle played in red shirts, "giving them the appearance of flamingos" in the eyes of The Journal's reporter.

Team: G.Ryder, Rodger, Crichton, Fitzgerald, Wylde, J.Ryder, Stokoe, Gardiner, Batey, Dixon, Quinn.

A Saturday 6.30pm slot for this game was found in order to avoid clashing with the Grand National, which was live on TV.

Having marked his debut with a penalty save at Spurs in midweek, a SJP bow for goalkeeper Dave Hollins proved to be memorable for rather different reasons.

A knee injury to United's Dick Keith forced him off at the start of the second half and although he later returned, he played no active part in the game.

Jimmy Greaves was tormentor-in-chief, scoring four and having one chalked off.

Magpies boss Charlie Mitten commented post-match that: "If Jimmy Greaves had been on our side we would have won by as big a score. He's the most devastating finisher in the game - a wonderful player."

Losing Fabricio Coloccini at half-time almost sent Alan Pardew's side into a downward spin and their lead looked slightly fragile when Shane Long got one back for the Baggies.

But thanks to fine rearguard performances from the rapidly improving James Perch and the gutsy Jonas Gutierrez, United held firm.

Just five minutes later that was 3-0 - and Joselu had two goals to his name.
