2023/24:
Eagles soar -
Magpies roar
Crystal Palace's recent upturn in
results continued on Monday night, walloping a depleted Manchester
United side 4-0 at a buoyant Selhurst Park.
Newcastle remain sixth in the Premier League as a consequence; the
Red Devils now with just one win in seven PL outings and Eddie
Howe's side with renewed optimism of snagging a European
qualification spot.
Seven sides enter the three UEFA competitions, with the top four PL
finishers going into the Champions League and the fifth place side
entering the Europa League.
That leaves one further Europa League and one UEFA Conference League
spot available, with the former allocated to the FA Cup winner and
the latter going to the Carabao Cup winner - assuming neither side
qualifies via a different method.
Carabao Cup winners Liverpool take a Champions League place as they
are guaranteed a top four finish, freeing up the UEFA Conference
place to the sixth place finisher.
However, if Manchester City win the FA Cup they enter the Champions
League by virtue of their PL position, with the sixth place
finishers taking the Europa League spot and the UEFA Conference
League spot to seventh.
Were Manchester United win the FA Cup they would take the second
Europa League place, with the sixth place finisher entering the UEFA
Conference League.

Hours after elder brother Sean
found the net for Newcastle against Burnley, Matty got off

Latest:
Sandro still on
track
for August return
From NUFC, Thursday:
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been given a
suspended two-month ban from competitive football by an independent
Regulatory Commission after self-declaring breaches of FA Betting
Rules.
He has also been fined £20,000 and warned by the FA as to his
future conduct.
The banning period is fully
suspended for the duration of the 2024/25 season, meaning he will be
available to return to competitive football upon the conclusion of
an existing ten-month sanction imposed by the Italian Football
Federation (FIGC) on 27 October 2023.
Provided that he does not commit
any further breach of the FA Betting Rules during the suspension
period, Sandro will not serve any part of the two-month sanction.
As acknowledged by the FA in the
independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons, the level of
assistance Sandro has provided by self-referring and fully
cooperating with a subsequent investigation is extraordinary and
unprecedented. Sandro made full admissions as to his betting
activity, and did so in circumstances where there was no other
evidence to support misconduct
proceedings.
Sandro is continuing to follow a
therapeutic plan and educational programme with the club's full
support and will continue to train with his teammates.
Italian international Tonali admitted 50 breaches of FA Rule E8
for placing bets on football matches between 12 August 2023 and 12
October 2023.
His bets included four Newcastle games that he played in and one he
was on the bench for, backing his side to win in all cases:
An accumulator bet involving either Newcastle to beat Brighton on
September 2 2023 or Newcastle to beat Burnley on September 30 2023
An accumulator bet including Newcastle to beat Brentford on
September 16 2023
A single bet on Newcastle to beat Manchester City on September 27
2023
An accumulator bet including Newcastle to beat West Ham on October 8
2023.
With
no extension to his original ban, that leaves him free to resume his
playing career on August 27th.

2024/25:
Japan tour claim
The Chronicle report that Newcastle have been given the
opportunity to play two pre-season games in Japan against J-League
sides in July.
They name the possible opponents as Yokohama F Marinos and Urawa Red
Diamonds, with a date for the latter opponent listed as July
31st.
No official confirmation of either game has been received as yet,
with Urawa fan sites also mentioning the possible Magpies meeting.
Meanwhile, United's post-season opponents Spurs have announced a
kickabout against J-League side Vissel Kobe in Tokyo on July 27th.
Kobe's current squad includes former Magpie Yoshinori Muto.
Our first visit to Japan followed the 1982/83 season, playing four
games in three cities - Toyko, Okayama and Nagoya - en route to
lifting the Japan Cup. We then returned in August 1996, losing 1-3 to Gamba Osaka.

On This Day in History |
6th May |
Born Or Died:
1953 Graeme Souness born, Edinburgh, Scotland. (Mgr 2004-06)

Not missed....
Having served Spurs, the smoggies,
Liverpool, Sampdoria and Rangers as a player, Souness then managed at Ibrox and
Anfield before joining Galatasaray.
A return to these shores came in 1996 with Southampton, although he just
managed just one season at the Saints before moving overseas again, with Torino
and Benfica.
March 2000 saw him take over at Blackburn Rovers, steering them back to the
Premier League and winning the League Cup.
Newcastle turned to him to fill the void left by Bobby Robson's enforced
departure in September 2004, Souness watching his former side lose 3-0 to his
future one from an Executive Box at SJP before taking over.
His first season saw Newcastle progress to the semi-finals of the FA Cup and
Quarter Finals of the UEFA, but defeats in both to Manchester United and
Sporting Lisbon within four days were major setbacks.
Craig Bellamy returned from his Celtic loan and was sold on to Blackburn before
the start of the next season - having fallen out with Souness over his place in
the side and other disciplinary-related transgressions.
His influence was brought to bear on other transfers, with Patrick Kluivert,
Aaron Hughes, Andy O'Brien, Laurent Robert and Jermaine Jenas also departing.
Loan deals also saw James Milner and Nicky Butt depart as Emre, Craig Moore,
Albert Luque, Michael Owen and Nobby Solano were added to January buys Amdy
Faye, Celestine Babayaro and Jean-Alain Boumsong (the latter deemed not good
enough for Newcastle by Bobby Robson months earlier).
By February 2006 though, Souness was gone - defeat at Manchester City leaving
United fifteenth with fan unrest increasing since a particularly gutless
League Cup defeat against a second-choice Wigan Athletic side.
While the fitness of Owen and Luque made his job more difficult, Souness was
ultimately betrayed by many of those who he'd brought in to the SJP dressing
room.
He became a familiar feature on our TV screens as a Sky
Sports pundit, where he remained consistently charmless when discussing the
Magpies.
However Souness did show a more caring side when completing a relay swim of
the English Channel in 2023, raising over £1m for Debra UK - a charity
supporting those affected by epidermolysis bullosa (EB).
2013
Death of Steve Carney, aged 55.
Pancreatic cancer tragically claimed the defender who made his name in the
famous Blyth Spartans FA Cup side of 1978 before moving to Gallowgate.

With everything
to play for after a scoreless first leg on Tyneside, Didier Drogba
broke Newcastle hearts with a goal in each half at a
packed Stade Velodrome.
A non-challenge from Hugo Viana allowed the home side to
counter attack, Matthieu Flamini
supplying Drogba to shoot past Shay Given after shrugging off Aaron
Hughes.
United attempted to get back into the tie and had their moments after the break,
with Lee Bowyer carelessly shooting wide and penalty claims when Shola Ameobi
was impeed.
Slack marking from a free kick near the end settled it though, with Given then
blocking another effort as Drogba went for a treble.
Future Magpie Habib Beye
appeared for l'OM and also started in the final, but
finished on the losing side as Valencia triumphed 2-0 in the Swedish city of
Gothenburg.

Almost
four years to the day since the promotion celebrations were followed by HMRC
searches on club offices, Newcastle confirmed that the matter was concluded:
"HMRC has today given formal confirmation that it is
discontinuing the four-year long criminal investigation into the tax
treatment of agents/players payments involving Newcastle United Football
Club.”
Mike Ashley issued this statement:
"After four years of the club
being subjected to this investigation, I am pleased that the criminal
investigation has now been discontinued.
"It is now time for the dark forces
that are preventing this football club from becoming the powerhouse that the
fans deserve, to step aside.”
