Update:
Kelly arrival confirmed
Newcastle's first senior signing of the
summer transfer window is Lloyd Kelly, a free agent
following the expiration of his Bournemouth contract.
The 25 year-old Bristol-born player has signed a five-year deal and will
take the 25 squad number.
Kelly will be reunited with former managers
Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall at Gallowgate plus ex-Cherries coach Graeme Jones.
The left-sided central defender played the first of 48 games for Bristol City in 2017, making a £13m switch to
Bournemouth ahead of the 2019/20 campaign - and a home debut during
Newcastle's 4-1 win there.
141 appearances for the ex-England U20 and U21 international at the Vitality
Stadium include 54 in the Premier League (47 starts).

Ex-Mags:
U's acquire Watts
League One
Cambridge United have completed the free transfer signing of Kelland
Watts after the defender's long association with Newcastle United ended.
Now 24, Kell joined the Magpies back in 2008 and played at Academy and
reserve level, belatedly making his competitive senior bow for the club
against Liverpool in the Premier League during 2020.
A succession of EFL loans meanwhile saw him rack up 140 league and cup games
for Stevenage, Mansfield Town, Plymouth Argyle, Wigan Athletic (twice) and
Peterborough United.
Watts is the second recently-released Magpie to have found a new club after Dylan Stephenson
joined National League side Dagenham & Redbridge.
The 21 year-old forward spent the second half of last season on loan at
National League North side South Shields, following a temporary posting to
Scottish Championship side Hamilton Academical in 2023.
Appearing for United in first team team friendlies without making a
senior competitive bow, Stephenson has also agreed a two year deal at the Daggers.
PS: Following his exit from SJP, goalkeeper Jude Smith has joined
League Two Carlisle United on a two year contract.
Update:
Exit looms for
Wembley winner
As
anticipated, Premier League-bound Southampton are looking to
conclude the permanent transfer of Ryan Fraser from
Newcastle, following his successful loan spell at St. Mary's Stadium
last season.
The 30 year-old former Scottish international is in the final year
of his contract at SJP, playing 44 times and scoring eight goals
last season in league and cups as the Saints won the Championship
playoff final.
The departure of fellow midfield discard Isaac Hayden from
Gallowgate is also nearing, with the 29 year-old expected to reach a
financial settlement on the remaining two years of his Magpies deal.
Spending the latter part of last season at QPR, he's keen on
remaining at Loftus Road, although the subject of interest from
other second tier clubs.
PS: As expected, full back Jamal Lewis failed to see his loan
move to Watford convert into a permanent switch and will return to
Gallowgate with 12 months left on his Newcastle contract.
Update:
'Keeper claims grow
The anticipated departure of Martin
Dubravka and confirmed exit of Loris Karius this summer has brought
renewed speculation over who will be signed to vie with Nick Pope as
Newcastle's first-choice goalkeeper.
The current name in the frame is James Trafford, the 21
year-old, 6 foot 6 inch custodian who has just endured a maiden
Premier League campaign at Burnley and is reportedly the subject of
a £16m bid.
Trafford is predicted to be the latest player to follow a
well-trodden path from Turf Moor to St. James' Park - following Jeff
Hendrick, Chris Wood and Nick Pope from the Clarets to the Magpies
in recent seasons.
The Cockermouth-born player joined Manchester City as a youngster in
2015, making his senior competitive debut on loan to Accrington
Stanley in August 2021.
An 18 month loan to Bolton Wanderers followed, returning to Burnley
last summer fresh from European U21 Championship victory with
England alongside current Magpie Anthony Gordon.
Making a £19m switch from City to Burnley ahead of their Premier
League return, he made the last of his 28 top-flight appearances for
them in March.
A similar fee is claimed to be under discussion with Newcastle at
present, with an unspecified percentage payable to Manchester City
due to a sell-on clause.

On This Day in History |

Born Or Died:
1931
Tommy Cahill born, Glasgow, Scotland. (1951-55)

Only four
outings for this left back in as many seasons
with United, who was signed from Scottish side Vale of Leven and debuted in a 3-0 home victory over
Cardiff City on Christmas Day
1951.
Cahill followed former team mate Joe Harvey
to Barrow in 1955 when the former took over
as manager and played over 300 games in
almost a decade at Holker Street.
Tommy junior also played for Newcastle's
youngsters, but was unable to emulate his
father and make the first team.

1977
Death of Joe Richardson, 66.
(1929-45,
coach 1945-77)
Gave a record 48 years of service
to United and was employed by the club to his death.
1976
Massimo Oddo born, Pescara, Italy (1997)
Right
back who trialled at United in September
1997 after failing to break into AC Milan's first XI and going on loan
to Serie
C sides Fiorenzuola, Monza and Prato.
No deal was done though and Oddo returned to Italy and was loaned to
Lecce, Monza and Napoli before joining Verona in 2000.
A run of good form there prompted Lazio to buy him in 2002 and an
international call-up followed (and a 2006 World Cup winners medal)
before a belated return to AC Milan in January 2007 at a cost of £8m.
Oddo was in the side who beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Champions League Final -
with Kenny Dalglish on ITV's pundits panel but failing to mention not fancying
him a decade earlier.
Loaned out to Bayern Munich in the 2008/09 season, Oddo spent his last
season back at Lecce before retiring in 2012.
1987 Mohamed
Diame born, Créteil, France (2016-19)

The
eighth arrival of a hectic close season, Senegal international midfielder Diame
had scored the goal that earned Hull City a place in the Premier League the
previous season.
Playing for Racing Club Lens as a youngster, Mo was acquired from Spanish club
Rayo Vallecano for Wigan Athletic in 2009.
Three seasons at the Latics followed before a free transfer switch to West Ham
came in the wake of a failed move to Manchester United in 2012 (Liverpool also
attempted to sign him before Kenny Dalglish was sacked as their
manager).
A £3.5m move to Hull at the end of August 2014 then followed and he netted
against United during a 2-2 draw at Gallowgate in only his second appearance.
However, injury problems meant that Diame played just twice after December that
season as the Tigers were relegated.
Demonstrating his fitness by being a virtual ever present in 2015/16, Mo
debuted in a home loss to Huddersfield Town during August 2016.
His contribution to the successful promotion campaign was significant, with
memorable goals on the road at Wigan, Burton and Brighton.
Three more strikes in the League Cup - one at former club Hull - doubled
his tally to six but there was always a feeling that there was more to come
from the midfielder and performances were frequently erratic.
After a slow start to life back in the Premier League, Diame suddenly
emerged as one of the driving forces to finishing tenth.
Making less of an impact the following season but still
starting 24 times in the league, talk of a one year
extension came amid claims that Mo was intent on a two
year deal.
That was never a possibility given United's contractual
policy and he followed Rafa Benitez out of United after making
his final Toon appearance at Fulham.
A move to Al Ahli SC
in Qatar came in July 2019; Rafa's successor Steve Bruce
admitting that he'd have tried to keep Diame at SJP if he'd been
appointed earlier, having
managed him at Hull City.
June 2021 saw Diame's contract at Al-Ahli expire and he
remained clubless until signing for Spanish second tier side Fuenlabrada
on a short-term deal in April 2022.
However, he was unable to prevent their relegation, finishing second bottom and joined Qatar side
Al-Sailiya in January 2023.
Internationally, Mo represented Senegal 36 times from 2011 and featured in
their side the 2012 Olympic games in England.
Following the African Cup of Nations Finals in January 2017 however, he
announced his international retirement.

Newcastle's marathon post-season tour moved on to

in what is now Zambia. 1997 Forty eight
hours after the arrival of Tommy Burns, Mark
Lawrenson was relieved of his duties at SJP, whatever they were....
2000 Rumours in included:
Jose Franciso Molina, Kiko, Joao Pinto, Meira,
Zlato Zahovic, Rui Costa, Vidigal.
Rumours out included:
Temuri Ketsbaia to PAOK Salonika
Paul Robinson to Sheffield

And finally one that eventually came true: Alessandro Pistone to
Everton.
2001
Glenn Roeder became the new
West Ham manager, replacing 'arry Redknapp.
The ex-Magpies defender had been on the Upton
Park coaching staff for two years.
2005 Midfielder Lee Bowyer opened transfer talks with
Birmingham City as Newcastle confirmed he could leave in
the wake of his on-field scrap with Kieron Dyer.
Bolton Wanderers, Charlton Athletic and West Ham also sniffed around, with the latter ultimately signing the
midfielder after he backed out of moving to St. Andrew's
after protests from Blues fans.
Bowyer eventually ended up at Birmingham, joining
them on loan in 2009 and returning as Manager 12 years
later.
2007 The transfer of Joey Barton
from Manchester City for £5.8m was confirmed.
City hinting that we had to increase our bid from £5.5m - the precise
amount that they had refused to pay Barton for leaving....
2021 A trio of Newcastle players were in action at the
delayed Euro2020 finals.
Martin Dubravka helped Slovakia beat Poland 2-1 in St. Petersburg, Ryan
Fraser came off the bench in Scotland's 0-2 loss to the Czech Republic
at Hampden and Emil Krafth had a substitute runout for Sweden as they
drew 0-0 with Spain in Seville. 2022
New Zealand's bid to qualify for the World Cup Finals in Qatar
failed at the final hurdle, as they lost 0-1 to Costa Rica in a playoff
staged in Doha.
United's Chris Wood
had one effort ruled out by VAR and was denied on three other occasions
by the opposition goalkeeper.
