2024/25 season Magpie Mover tickets are on sale to season ticket holders here. The price remains £25, more details here.

Due to transport funding restrictions, NUFC members cannot purchase Magpie Movers.

Euros:
Schar bows out,
Tripps plays on

Two Magpies remain involved at the Euros after England's Quarter Final victory over Switzerland in Dusseldorf on Saturday.

Despite the best efforts of Fabian Schar, the Swiss slipped out in a penalty shootout after 120 minutes left the two sides locked at 1-1.

The Newcastle defender's smart pass into the box led to his side's opener and another fine cross in the closing seconds of normal time almost led to a Swiss winner.

Schar coolly dispatched his penalty but a flawless set of spot kicks from Gareth Southgate's side saw them 5-3 victors.

Anthony Gordon remained on the bench throughout, while Kieran Trippier played 78 minutes at left wing back, going off soon after his side fell behind.

SJP old boy Ivan Toney replaced Harry Kane during extra time and was successful in the shootout.

England's reward is a Semi Final tie against the Dutch in Dortmund on Wednesday evening.

QF ties:

Sat 06.07.2024 England(p) 1-1 Switzerland

Sat 06.07.2024 Netherlands 2-1 Turkey
Gini began on the bench in Berlin and that's where he remained as his side booked a date with England in the last four.

Fri 05.07.2024 Spain 2-1 Germany
All three former NUFC players started on the Spanish bench with Merino introduced on 80 minutes and Joselu following in extra time.

And it was Merino who ended up the hero for his country, converting a close range header in the 119th minute to eliminate the hosts.

Fri 05.07.2024 Portugal(p) 0-0 France

SF ties:

Tue 09.07.2024 Spain v France (8pm)
Wed 10.07.2024 England v Netherlands (8pm)

Five ex-Magpies remain involved: Joselu, Mikel Merino, Ayoze Perez (Spain), Ivan Toney (England) and Gini Wijnaldum (Netherlands).

Hat comp answer

In addition to their club-specific hats, Football Bobbles also boast a selection of England headwear in their catalogue (NB: other countries are available).

We had one of their Shearer 92 bucket hats and asked which future Newcastle United left back lined up with Shearer on his England debut against France in 1992.

It was of course Stuart Pearce and from the correct entries received, Andrew Kingston was selected as our winner.

Shearer 92 bucket hats are reversible and made in Portugal exclusively for Football Bobbles. They are available online

Copa America:
Bruno plays on

Although Miggy Almiron's Paraguay exited from the Copa America without collecting a single point, Bruno Guimaraes and Brazil have reached the Quarter Finals.

Their last eight opponents in Las Vegas are Uruguay, at 2am BST on Sunday with the winners facing either Colombia or Panama in Charlotte at 1am BST on Thursday.

PS: One ex-Magpie was also in action at the Copa, Salomon Rondon in a Venezuela side who were eliminated on penalties by Canada despite this memorable goal - his third of the tournament.

2024/25:
Home friendlies:
public sale now

Tickets for Newcastle's two home pre-season games are now on general sale priced at £25 and £20 each, with concessions £15 and £10.

There's no weekend ticket or discount for purchasing both days together.

Rather than the four team Sela Cup format of last year, just three sides are involved this time round with only two games taking place not four:

Fri 9th Aug NUFC v Girona (7.30pm)
Sat 10th Aug NUFC v Brest (4pm)

That mirrors the arrangements of 2022, when Eddie Howe's side played home games on the Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

NUWFC will also be in friendly action against opposition tbc on the Saturday (1pm). Buying a ticket to the Brest game includes that.

Labelled as the Sela Weekender, Friday's game is a stand-alone fixture, with the winner's of the men's and women's games on Saturday awarded Sela Cups.

It promises to be a busy weekend for Spaniards Girona, who face Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium the following evening, Saturday August 10th.

French side Brest aka Stade Brestois 29 meanwhile visit Gallowgate a week after facing Juventus in Italy.

Both our opponents finished third in their respective leagues last season, meaning that they will be playing Champions League football next season.

Incoming:
New PM installed

Newcastle United confirmed their new Sporting Director on Thursday, appointing Paul Mitchell in succession to Dan Ashworth.

The 42 year-old Mancunian was most recently with Monaco, leaving there in June 2023 since when he'd been linked with posts at several Premier League clubs.

That followed various recruitment roles at MK Dons, Southampton, Spurs and RB Leipzig - working with Mauricio Pochettino at both Southampton and Spurs.

Part of Paul's remit at Monaco was in his own words, "creating one aligned strategy" across both the principality club and Belgian Pro League outfit Cercle Brugge - part-owned by Monaco since 2017.

Given the noises coming out of Gallowgate recently regarding a multi-club model, that part of his CV may prove to be significant.

Mitchell's playing career was ended by injury aged 27 when he was on the books at MK Dons, following spells in the lower leagues at Wigan Athletic and Halifax Town.

Delving into our footballing family tree, the only connection we can find between him as a player and a current Magpie is Wigan; his time as a Latic overlapping with that of first team coach Graeme Jones.

Update:
Miley blow

An exclusive Chronicle report on Wednesday confirmed that Lewis Miley has suffered a fresh injury blow and will miss the opening months of the season.

The 18 year-old made the most recent of his 26 senior appearances last season in the FA Cup Quarter Final loss to Manchester City back in March.

Missing the remainder of the campaign due to a back injury while on England duty, Miley has now suffered metatarsal damage that will require corrective surgery.

Recovery from that procedure is anticipated to sideline the midfielder for around 12 weeks.

2024/25:
Hull (a) update

The season ticket points requirement for United's pre-season trip to Hull City dropped to 9 points at 2pm on Friday.

The next scheduled reduction is at 2pm on Monday.

Eddie Howe's side travel to the Championship Tigers on Saturday July 27th (2pm) and received an allocation of 4,500 places.

NUFC's re-launched ticket website is online here

The club confirm that the usual away ticket sale conditions will apply, including a limited ballot once the main allocation sells out.

They also emphasise that tickets cannot be resold or transferred and threaten random ticket checks on the day.

There's no news as yet of pre-season away games apart from Hull and the two in Japan, Sky Sports mentioning a week-long training camp in Germany to tie in with activities related to kit provider adidas.

Whether that would include any public games remains unclear though, amid claim and counter-claim from several EFL clubs whether pre-season games in Germany must be played behind closed doors.

Update:
New intake:
details awaited

Official confirmation of new additions to Newcastle's Academy is yet to arrive, but social media postings reveal the following:

Kayden Lucas striker, Clevedon Town.
Aaron Epia defender, Everton.
Ezra Tika-Lemba
defender, West Ham.

Also pictured after accepting scholarship offers are two midfielders who were already on our books:

Matheos Ferreira
Mohamed Waddani

PS: claims of two further midfield arrivals continue to bounce around cyberspace; Rory Finneran of Blackburn Rovers and CJ Afumuzor from Portsmouth.

On This Day in History
6th July

Born Or Died:

1984 Death of Lawrie Crown, 86.
(1926-27)

What Else?

1988 Paul Gascoigne completed his £2m move from Newcastle to Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson later claimed in his autobiography that Gazza reneged on a verbal agreement to join them, in order to join fellow old boy Chris Waddle in N17:

"We spoke to him the night before I went on holiday. He says 'Go and enjoy yourself Mr Ferguson, I'll be signing for Manchester United'.

"So I went on my holidays but Martin Edwards rang and said 'I've got some bad news - he signed for Tottenham. They bought a house for his mother and father in the north east and that swung it'.

"I think it was a bad mistake, and Paul admits it...we had a structure of players who could have helped him and it could have given him some discipline."

1995 Winger David Ginola joined Newcastle from PSG for £2.5m, as the club's close season spending moved to £12.5m, following the earlier acquisitions of striker Les Ferdinand from QPR (£6m) and defender Warren Barton from Wimbledon. (£4m).

United had originally approached the Parisians for George Weah, only for the Liberian striker to the join AC Milan at an inflated price, amid talk of legal action from a cuckolded United.

The Ginola deal was then agreed and the legal threat was forgotten - with subsequent transfers between the two clubs bringing the likes of Didier Domi, Laurent Robert and Sylvain Distin to SJP.

1998 Magpies custodian Shaka Hislop returned to London - where he spent the first two years of his life -sealing a freedom of contract move to West Ham United.

2000 Former Newcastle striker Mark McGhee ended his enforced period of exile and joined another ex-Mag, Ray Clarke, on the scouting staff of Gordon Strachan's Coventry City.

2003 Celtic were linked with goalkeeper Steve Harper while the press indulged in more Patrick Kluivert for Newcastle speculation.

2004 A year later... outgoing rumours had Gary Speed and Steve Harper moving to Teesside while Patrick Kluivert was still heading the list of possible incomings.

2005 Wind forward another 12 months and porky Paddy had already been and gone, departing from Tyneside with a greatly enhanced bank account.

2007 United defender David Edgar was having a tough time at the U20 World Cup with Canada. Having been beaten by Chile in their opener, Austria defeated them 0-1 to leave them with slim qualification hopes.

2008 Hot on the heels of rumours claiming Mike Ashley had held takeover talks with US investors InterMedia Partners, rumours of a £300m bid from The Saudi Binladen Group emerged. Nothing further was heard.

2009 As speculation regarding the future ownership of Newcastle United continued, club MD Derek Llambias commented that:

"There have been more than two bids at £100m. At the moment, we are in the hands of lawyers, and it is all ongoing. We are giving interested parties all the help that they need."

2009 Meanwhile, the first team squad began their pre-season training camp at Carton House (near Dublin) under the leadership of interim manager Chris Hughton.

However, the previous management team of Alan Shearer, Iain Dowie and Paul Ferris had mapped out the programme that was followed some weeks earlier, in the expectation that they would be in charge.

2012 Coventry City midfielder Gael Bigirimana signed a five year deal at United. The Burundi -born youngster had moved to England with his family as a child, joining the Sky Blue Academy at the age of 11.

2013 The three year career of James Perch at SJP ended as Championship side Wigan Athletic signed him for an undisclosed fee. He agreed a four year deal at the DW Stadium.

2017
Central defender Florian Lejeune became United's second Summer signing several weeks it was first predicted.

The French-born 26 year-old joined from Spaniards Eibar on a five year contract after his claimed €10M release clause was met.

2021 Steve Bruce's squad began pre-season clad in Castore training kit for the first time - less than a week after they were confirmed as successors to previous supplier, Puma.
