Euros:
Schar bows out,
Tripps plays on

Two Magpies remain involved at the Euros after England's Quarter Final victory over Switzerland in Dusseldorf on Saturday.

Despite the best efforts of Fabian Schar, the Swiss slipped out in a penalty shootout after 120 minutes left the two sides locked at 1-1.

The Newcastle defender's smart pass into the box led to his side's opener and another fine cross in the closing seconds of normal time almost led to a Swiss winner.

Schar coolly dispatched his penalty but a flawless set of spot kicks from Gareth Southgate's side saw them 5-3 victors.

Anthony Gordon remained on the bench throughout, while Kieran Trippier played 78 minutes at left wing back, going off soon after his side fell behind.

SJP old boy Ivan Toney replaced Harry Kane during extra time and was successful in the shootout.

England's reward is a Semi Final tie against the Dutch in Dortmund on Wednesday evening.

PS: there was at least one other current Magpie present in Dusseldorf; goalkeeper Mark Gillespie was spotted in the crowd.

QF ties:

Sat 06.07.2024 England(p) 1-1 Switzerland

Sat 06.07.2024 Netherlands 2-1 Turkey
Gini began on the bench in Berlin and that's where he remained as his side booked a date with England in the last four.

Fri 05.07.2024 Spain 2-1 Germany
All three former NUFC players started on the Spanish bench with Merino introduced on 80 minutes and Joselu following in extra time.

And it was Merino who ended up the hero for his country, converting a close range header in the 119th minute to eliminate the hosts.

Fri 05.07.2024 Portugal(p) 0-0 France

SF ties:

Tue 09.07.2024 Spain v France (8pm)
Wed 10.07.2024 England v Netherlands (8pm)

Five ex-Magpies remain involved: Joselu, Mikel Merino, Ayoze Perez (Spain), Ivan Toney (England) and Gini Wijnaldum (Netherlands).

Internationals:
Brazil beaten

Newcastle's interest in the Copa America ended overnight, with Brazil's exit to Uruguay at the Quarter Final stage.

90 minutes failed to produce a goal in Las Vegas, with Bruno Guimaraes in the starting lineup but withdrawn in the 87th minute.

With no extra time, the tie went straight to penalties and
Uruguay triumphed 4-2.

Hat comp answer

In addition to their club-specific hats, Football Bobbles also boast a selection of England headwear in their catalogue (NB: other countries are available).

We had one of their Shearer 92 bucket hats and asked which future Newcastle United left back lined up with Shearer on his England debut against France in 1992.

It was of course Stuart Pearce and from the correct entries received, Andrew Kingston was selected as our winner.

Shearer 92 bucket hats are reversible and made in Portugal exclusively for Football Bobbles. They are available online

Home friendlies:
public sale now

Tickets for Newcastle's two home pre-season games are now on general sale priced at £25 and £20 each, with concessions £15 and £10.

There's no weekend ticket or discount for purchasing both days together.

Rather than the four team Sela Cup format of last year, just three sides are involved this time round with only two games taking place not four:

Fri 9th Aug NUFC v Girona (7.30pm)
Sat 10th Aug NUFC v Brest (4pm)

That mirrors the arrangements of 2022, when Eddie Howe's side played home games on the Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

NUWFC will also be in friendly action against opposition tbc on the Saturday (1pm). Buying a ticket to the Brest game includes that.

Labelled as the Sela Weekender, Friday's game is a stand-alone fixture, with the winner's of the men's and women's games on Saturday awarded Sela Cups.

It promises to be a busy weekend for Spaniards Girona, who face Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium the following evening, Saturday August 10th.

French side Brest aka Stade Brestois 29 meanwhile visit Gallowgate a week after facing Juventus in Italy.

Both our opponents finished third in their respective leagues last season, meaning that they will be playing Champions League football next season.

New PM installed

Newcastle United confirmed their new Sporting Director on Thursday, appointing Paul Mitchell in succession to Dan Ashworth.

The 42 year-old Mancunian was most recently with Monaco, leaving there in June 2023 since when he'd been linked with posts at several Premier League clubs.

That followed various recruitment roles at MK Dons, Southampton, Spurs and RB Leipzig - working with Mauricio Pochettino at both Southampton and Spurs.

Part of Paul's remit at Monaco was in his own words, "creating one aligned strategy" across both the principality club and Belgian Pro League outfit Cercle Brugge - part-owned by Monaco since 2017.

Given the noises coming out of Gallowgate recently regarding a multi-club model, that part of his CV may prove to be significant.

Mitchell's playing career was ended by injury aged 27 when he was on the books at MK Dons, following spells in the lower leagues at Wigan Athletic and Halifax Town.

Delving into our footballing family tree, the only connection we can find between him as a player and a current Magpie is Wigan; his time as a Latic overlapping with that of first team coach Graeme Jones.

Update:
Miley blow

An exclusive Chronicle report on Wednesday confirmed that Lewis Miley has suffered a fresh injury blow and will miss the opening months of the season.

The 18 year-old made the most recent of his 26 senior appearances last season in the FA Cup Quarter Final loss to Manchester City back in March.

Missing the remainder of the campaign due to a back injury while on England duty, Miley has now suffered metatarsal damage that will require corrective surgery.

Recovery from that procedure is anticipated to sideline the midfielder for around 12 weeks.

2024/25:
Hull (a) update

The season ticket points requirement for United's pre-season trip to Hull City dropped to 9 points at 2pm on Friday.

The next scheduled reduction is at 2pm on Monday.

Eddie Howe's side travel to the Championship Tigers on Saturday July 27th (2pm) and received an allocation of 4,500 places.

NUFC's re-launched ticket website is online here

The club confirm that the usual away ticket sale conditions will apply, including a limited ballot once the main allocation sells out.

They also emphasise that tickets cannot be resold or transferred and threaten random ticket checks on the day.

There's no news as yet of pre-season away games apart from Hull and the two in Japan, Sky Sports mentioning a week-long training camp in Germany to tie in with activities related to kit provider adidas.

Whether that would include any public games remains unclear though, amid claim and counter-claim from several EFL clubs whether pre-season games in Germany must be played behind closed doors.

Update:
New intake:
details awaited

Official confirmation of new additions to Newcastle's Academy is yet to arrive, but social media postings reveal the following:

Kayden Lucas striker, Clevedon Town.
Aaron Epia defender, Everton.
Ezra Tika-Lemba
defender, West Ham.

Also pictured after accepting scholarship offers are two midfielders who were already on our books:

Matheos Ferreira
Mohamed Waddani

PS: claims of two further midfield arrivals continue to bounce around cyberspace; Rory Finneran of Blackburn Rovers and CJ Afumuzor from Portsmouth.

On This Day in History
7th July

Born Or Died:

1887 Bob Pailor born, Stockton-on-Tees.
(1914-15)

Centre forward who worked as a miner and had played for local sides St.Oswalds and West Hartlepool before signing for West Bromwich Albion in 1908.

Helping Albion win promotion to Division One in 1911, Bob finished on the losing side in the 1912 FA Cup Final after a replay.

May 1914 saw Newcastle pay £1,550 for his services and Pailor made his competitive debut against former club West Brom in a 1-2 defeat at SJP the following September.

By the end of that season though, he'd been forced into retirement through illness and later took employment as bookmaker in Hartlepool. He died in January 1976.

1907 Jesse Carver born, Aigburth, Liverpool. (1936-39)

Centre half who began his career with Blackburn Rovers, moving on to SJP at a cost of £2,000 in June 1936.

Making his debut in a season-opening home defeat by Barnsley, Jesse made 36 league appearances in his first season as United finished fourth in Division Two.

27 games in the 1937/38 season followed, but with the club avoiding relegation only on goal average a further overhaul of the squad saw him lose his starting place.

After a handful of games deputising for first- choice Jimmy Denmark, Carver joined Bury in April 1939 for £850.

The suspension of fixtures in September of that year due to the outbreak of war put an end to Jesse's playing career and he joined the police force for the duration.

Post-war he was to make his name as much -travelled and innovative coach, credited with placing greater reliance on ball skills than the usual general fitness drills.

Starting with assistant trainer duties at Huddersfield Town in 1945, Carver went on to coach at Xerves (Holland), the Dutch FA, Millwall, Juventus (Italy), Marzotto (Italy), and Valdagno (Italy).

A brief return to England in 1952 saw him become West Bromwich Albion manager but within months he'd exited, turning down the England manager's job (a decision never publicised until decades later).

Coaching Torino and then AC Roma, Jesse became Coventry City boss in 1955 but once more failed to make an impact in his homeland and returned abroad again, to coach Inter Milan.

Later moves took him to coaching roles with Lazio, Sampdoria, Genoa, the Swedish national team and Tottenham Hotspur - although his time there was brief.

Information is sketchy about Jesse's moves in the 1960s, with claims of time spent coaching Cypriot club APOEL Nicosia and the Nigerian national side. There's also mention of jobs in both Portugal and the USA.

Carver returned to live in England and his death was recorded in November 2003, when living in Bournemouth.

What Else?

1960 The Chronicle reported on ground improvements at SJP, with dressing room refurbishment including the installation of new circular communal baths.

Even more thrillingly, home players would benefit from having their own individual lockers rather than just a coat peg.

1969
Following his goalscoring heroics in the Fairs Cup Final second leg, Alan Foggon signed a new and improved contract at Gallowgate.

Fellow 19 year-old Keith Dyson rejected his offer but was persuaded to stay.

1
989 Former Magpie Chris Waddle joined Olympique Marseilles from Tottenham Hotspur in a record transfer worth £4.5m.

By the time he departed in July 1992, he'd become a cult hero with fans of the French club and helping them win three titles.

Waddle also played in the 1991 European Cup Final against Red Star Belgrade, but wasn't one of OM's penalty takers as they were beaten 3-5 following a 0-0 draw.

1996
Future Gallowgate team mates faced each other internationally
, as Nolberto Solano's Peru were held to a 0-0 in Lima by an Argentina side including fellow midfielder Christian Bassedas.

1997 Newcastle announced the signing of attacking midfielder Temuri Ketsbaia on a free transfer from Greek side AEK Athens.

Ketsbaia had caught the eye in April 1996 playing for his native Georgia in a World Cup Qualifier at Wembley against England.

Also joining us for nowt this summer would be the "Dads Army" trio of Ian Rush, Stuart Pearce and John Barnes.

1997 Chris Waddle became Burnley player Manager, fellow ex-Magpie Glenn Roeder following him to Turf Moor as coach.

57 games later though, with 17 wins, 16 draws and 24 defeats, he was out on his ear as the Clarets slid out of Division One.

1998 Carl Serrant, a left sided defender arrived on Tyneside in a £500,000 deal, with another £100,000 due to his club Oldham Athletic based on appearances. Serrant was reputedly watched by 21 clubs in the previous season, but only West Bromwich Albion had made a bid, which was rejected.

United also signed out-of-contract Spurs youngster Garry Brady on a free transfer. Midfielder Brady had made a handful of appearances for the London club but was to end up costing us £650,000 at a tribunal.

2004 Latest quotes from Patrick Kluivert about claims of a move to Tyneside:

"There have been stories in the press today claiming I am close to signing for Newcastle United and I would like to set the record straight.

"It is true that Newcastle have contacted my agent by phone and shown an interest in me, but I have not yet opened talks with the club. However, I am very interested in speaking to Sir Bobby Robson about a possible move.

"I can confirm that there are some other clubs interested in me, but we have agreed not to reveal the names of the clubs. We are looking for a deal to be sorted out in the next 10 days."

2005 Disgruntled striker Craig Bellamy joined Blackburn Rovers for a fee thought to be well below the £5m speculated in the press.

It was something of a surprise move with his former loan club Celtic and Everton seemingly ahead of Rovers in the queue, although the player himself had dismissed interest from Birmingham City.

Meanwhile, midfielder Darren Ambrose was allowed to talk to Charlton Athletic.

2008 Players reported back for training although Geremi, Amdy Faye and new signing Jonas Gutierrez were allowed extra time off after international games.

Joey Barton was also missing, still being detained at her majesty's pleasure....

Meanwhile, MD Derek Llambias assured fans that there were no intentions to sell the club:

"By putting a new management structure in place this year, by investing in new signings at first team and academy level, and by introducing cheaper tickets for our younger fans, the long-term commitment and vision for Newcastle United is there for all to see."

2009 Meanwhile, press reports speculated that a rerun of the club's "player power" episode of the 1970s beckoned as a discontented squad continued pre-season training at Carton House near Dublin.

Captain Nicky Butt said:

"We’ve got to get a manager on board – we don’t even know who to speak to any more.

"Alan Shearer is the favourite with a lot of the people trying to buy the club – at least that’s what we hear – but until something happens we don’t know who is in charge.

"The players are completely fed up and when that happens some will try to go somewhere more stable.

"It’s so frustrating – a
(takeover) deal is always happening in a week’s time but this has been going on since last season. It’s like a scratched record going over and over. It’s getting on everyone’s nerves.”

2011 United boss Alan Pardew appointed Fabricio Coloccini as club captain in succession to the previous season's armband wearers, Alan Smith and Kevin Nolan.

Colo was preferred to Joey Barton, seen as the natural candidate by many but in the final year of his contract and not always "on message" enough for his employers....

2015 24 hours after his sister leaked the news on social media, it was confirmed that Sammy Ameobi had signed a two year contract extension with Newcastle and agreed a season-long loan move to Championship side Cardiff City.

2015 United U18s began pre-season with a 2-3 defeat by Corby Town at Little Benton.

Home scorers were Mackenzie Heaney and Jamie Holmes, while trialists Dani Koks, Callum Douglas and Brandon Williams featured.

2016 Moussa Sissoko and France made it to the final of Euro 2016, beating Germany 2-0 in Marseille. The Newcastle midfielder won his 43rd senior cap and completed 90 minutes.

2021
England progressed to the final of the Euros thanks to a 2-1 win over Denmark at Wembley.

Future Magpie Kieran Trippier appeared from the bench in extra time while current Newcastle coach Graeme Jones was pitchside as part of Gareth Southgate's England backroom staff.

2023 Media speculation credited United with interest in left winger Harvey Barnes, an expected departure from Leicester City following demotion to the Championship.
