Old boy:
Maxi moves again

A year after moving from Newcastle to Al-Ahli on a three year deal Allan Saint-Maximin has left the Saudi Arabian club on loan.

The 27 year-old Frenchman will spend the coming season at Turkish side Fenerbache, where he'll be coached by Jose Mourinho.

The Istanbul-based side begin pre-season preparations with a home friendly against Championship side Hull City.

England:
Ready, Eddie, go?

News of Gareth Southgate's resignation as England manager on Tuesday triggered media speculation that Eddie Howe is on the FA's shortlist to replace him.

The Times claim that the Newcastle boss is the FA's preferred candidate, along with the unattached Graham Potter and England U21 boss Lee Carsley.

50 year-old Carsley has been in charge of the U21s since 2021, winning the Euros last year while Potter has been jobless since leaving Chelsea in April 2023.

Interviewed via Zoom on Tuesday, United CEO Darren Eales pledged to rebuff any potential approach for Howe, saying that:

"Eddie is under a long-term contract with the club. You see him, he loves the day to day of club football and we have an exciting project here in terms of the commitment from the ownership and the journey we want to go on.

"We are really excited about this season ahead. For us, he is exactly the right man for the project we are on at Newcastle United and that is why we are committed to a long term deal with him. That’s why we think he’s the right man for Newcastle. We love him.

"I’ve spent the last three months with Eddie in terms of how we’re planning for Newcastle United for the season ahead.

"For us as a club Eddie has done a brilliant job. He’s a great developer of players. He gets the psyche of the club and Newcastle and the fans. We’ve seen that with the way the team and the supporters have that affinity. “

Eales also revealed that Howe agreed an extension to his Newcastle contract last year.

“I don’t want to talk on it but it’s a multi-year deal and in those circumstances, like any employee from us, there will have to be compensation paid.

"Again, it’s hypothetical but he’s under a multi-year deal, there’s not a set number, it’s about he’s our employee so from that perspective we’re not looking to release Eddie for all the reasons I’ve spoken about.

"He’s a top coach, he’s the right coach for Newcastle United at the right moment and this is the coach we want to lead the club for the future."

Howe meanwhile hasn't made any public comment but is scheduled to speak to the media later this week.

He's previously stated a preference for the day-to-day management of a club side but also expressed a desire to lead England at some stage in his career.

2024/25:
Germany calling

Newcastle's senior squad are now in Germany for a week-long training camp at the adidas HQ in Herzogenaurach.

Pictured in action on Tuesday were Emil Krafth and Alexander Isak, who both played for Sweden after the end of the last club season.

International participation means that Miguel Almiron, Martin Dubravka, Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, Fabian Schar and Kieran Trippier will all have additional time off.

Development squad players Jamie Miley, Cathal Heffernan and Treven Sanusi have travelled.

Also present was Garang Kuol, ahead on an expected loan departure. He wore the 32 squad number vacated by Elliot Anderson.

Of the three returning domestic loanees, there was no sign of Ryan Fraser or Isaac Hayden but Jamal Lewis was spotted.

Speaking of numbers, Lloyd Kelly looks to have taken 25, Odysseas Vlachodimos 19 and John Ruddy 26 - the latter vacant since Karl Darlow's departure. Harvey Barnes meanwhile wore 11 - available following Matt Ritchie's exit.

Recently-appointed Sporting Director Paul Mitchell and Performance Director James Bunce were present, along with CEO Darren Eades and CCO Peter Silverstone.

Also spotted was director Jamie Reuben but Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi have now left the club.

There's still no mention of whether any game will be played in Germany, amid claims that Eddie Howe's side will face both Gateshead and Leeds United behind closed doors at some point in pre-season.

A behind closed doors kickabout against Burnley has been announced by the Championship side on an as yet undisclosed date. It's one of five friendlies that the Clarets will play at their training ground.

It's widely assumed that the behind closed doors games are to meet the conditions of Sandro Tonali's ban, allowing him to get some match practice before his return in late August.

The U19 European Championship finals are currently taking place in Northern Ireland, with Newcastle's Travis Hernes selected in the Norwegian squad.

The midfielder was in the starting line-up for Monday's group stage opener against Italy, playing 80 minutes as his side were beaten 1-2 at Seaview in Belfast.

Next up for Norway are meetings with Ukraine on Thursday and then hosts Northern Ireland on Sunday.

On This Day in History
17th July

Born Or Died:

1937 Alan Hopper born, Newcastle.
(1959-60)

Full back who appeared at reserve level for United but failed to make it through to the first team before leaving SJP.

Signing for South Shields before switching to Barnsley in 1961, Alan went on to make over 130 appearances during a four year stay at Oakwell.

After a brief stint with Bradford City in the 1965/66 season, Hopper hung up his boots.

In later years he was a regular player at Rothbury Golf Club.

1959 Victor Nogueira born, Maputo, Mozambique. (1978)

Newcastle took this goalkeeper on trial from South African side Rangers in July 1978 as cover for first-choice Kevin Carr; with Mick Mahoney on the transfer list and Steve Hardwick on loan to a club in the USA.

Featuring in the club's pre-season tour of Sweden, Victor then took a back seat after Manager Bill McGarry recalled Mahoney for the remainder of the friendly matches.

An unused substitute in a kickabout at Arbroath, Nogueira then left Tyneside and subsequently found his way to the USA.

He'd then enjoy a lengthy career playing both indoor and outdoor variants of the game for Atlanta Chiefs, Montreal Manic, Chicago Sting, Cleveland Force, San Diego Sockers and Milwaukee Wave.

Playing for a total of 25 years until his 45th birthday, Victor subsequently coached various clubs including Concordia Eagles University at Irvine, California.

What Else?

1998 United took 18 year-old Argentinean midfielder Luciano Filomeno on trial from Nueva Chicago club in his homeland.

The Buenos-Aires born player had made a scoring debut for Nueva's first team the age of just 15 and was capped by his country at youth international level.

Filomeno appeared in pre-season reserve fixtures at Whitley Bay (where he scored), Scarborough and Spennymoor, but wasn't offered a contract at United.

That then began a global tour of clubs that included Udinese (Italy), Inter Milan (Italy), San Lorenzo (Argentina) Jaguares de Chiapas (Mexico), Busan (South Korea), DC United (USA) and then back to Nueva Chicago.

Later moves saw Lucio join Greek sides Asteras Tripolis and PAOK Salonika.

2000 Rumours were rife that defender Steve Howey could leave United after eleven years of service, with Aston Villa, Liverpool and the mackems all credited with an interest. He would ultimately join Manchester City.

2000 Midfielder Rob Lee was reunited with his no.7 shirt when the squad numbers were announced. He had initially been given no.37 by caretaker boss Steve Clarke, after Ruud Gullit handed his old shirt to Kieron Dyer - infamously giving Lee no number at all.

Lee's subsequent autobiography was titled "Come in number 37".

2001 Newcastle Reserves began their season with a 4-1 friendly win at Ashington.

Colin McMenamin scored twice and James Coppinger also put a penalty wide, but went on to score United's fourth - Richard Offiong getting the other on his stiffs' debut.

Bobby Robson was present at Portland Park and would have noted an impressive performance from left back Olivier Bernard.

The Sam Allardyce era got underway on a sunny Tuesday evening at Victoria Park, with what was ultimately a deserved victory.

New signings Joey Barton and David Rozehnal both featured, while Michael Owen returned from injury with his first Newcastle goal since December 2005 - followed by the barest acknowledgement to the away support.

2009 In a summer of turmoil and uncertainty, an official club statement delivered a rare but welcome piece of good news:

"Reports in the press this morning that Joe Kinnear is to be appointed as Newcastle United manager are not true.

"The position remains that the Club is still in the market to be sold and is still negotiating with prospective buyers."

After a goalless first period, Newcastle made eleven half time changes and within two minutes went ahead when Leon Best hit his first Toon goal since moving from Coventry six months before.

Haris Vuckic got in on the scoring act shortly afterwards, beating ex-Mag Tony Caig with a low left footer after good work from Best.

James Perch debuted at centre half following his arrival from Nottingham Forest, while Chris Hughton blooded rookies Jeff Henderson and Shane Ferguson at senior team level.

The Magpies were clad in their third-choice white strip for the first time, as Puma began their stint as official kit providers.

2014 United belatedly confirmed the arrival of Feyenoord right back Daryl Janmaat for an estimated £5m, as Arsenal welcomed new signing Mathieu Debuchy for a fee reported to be between £10m and £12m.

The Dutch defender became Newcastle's sixth close season capture, 24 hours after striker Emmanuel Riviere was unveiled.

2014
Newcastle fans John Alder and Liam Sweeney and 296 other innocent people were murdered on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

John and Liam were on their way out to watch United play in New Zealand when their flight was downed by a land-to-air missile fired from an area of Eastern Ukraine.

2017
The U23s began pre-season  with a 2-1 win at non-league Darlington AFC.

All the goals came in the opening half hour - Sean Longstaff and Ivan Toney netting, Toney then missing a penalty and trialist Scott Fenwick scoring for the Quakers.

The game was staged at Darlington's former Northern Echo Arena home rather than their new Blackwell Meadows ground.

United's pre-season began with an entirely predictable heavy defeat in the first game of the Premier League Asia Trophy in Nanjing.

Ben Dawson and Neil Redfearn took charge of the team in China while negotiations to secure Steve Bruce were concluding.

There were first senior outings for U23 players Tom Allan, Owen Bailey, Matty Longstaff, Elias Sorensen and Kelland Watts.

For Allan, it was a
bow to forget, inadvertently heading the fourth Wolves goal beyond Freddie Woodman into his own net.
