The Mail report that former Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has been approached regarding the vacant position of Jamaican national team boss.

Now 63, Bruce's last coaching role ended when West Bromwich Albion showed him the door in October 2022.

Change kit launch

Newcastle will launch this change kit during the club's Japanese tour on Tuesday at 5pm local time, 9am BST.

The inspiration for the colour scheme looks to be the 1999/00 season change kit, reviving the NUFC round crest not seen on a Magpies strip since 1988.

2024/25:
Japan tour

Newcastle are now in Toyko ahead of two friendlies this week against J League opposition:

Wed 31.07.2024 Urawa Red Diamonds
@ Saitama Stadium (11.30am BST, 7.30pm local)

Sat 03.08.2024 Yokohama F Marinos
@ National Stadium, Toyko (11am BST, 7pm local)

The venues are around 25 miles apart, Saitama with a 67,000 capacity and the National Stadium slightly more.

54,255 fans were at the National Stadium on Saturday to see Spurs defeat J League champions Vissel Kobe 3-2. That kicked off at 7pm in 31 degree temperatures.

Also in Toyko last week were Brighton and Hove Albion, who beat Kashima Antlers 5-1 and Tokyo Verdy 4-2 before crowds of 25,172 and 25,851 respectively at the National Stadium.

Former Magpie Yankuba Minteh netted in both games.

Team: The following 28 players have travelled, along with non-combatant Sandro Tonali:

Pope, Ruddy, Dubravka, Vlachodimos, Gillespie, Ashby, Lewis, Livramento, Hall, Schar, Burn, Krafth, Kelly, C. Thompson, Heffernan, Joelinton, Longstaff, Guimaraes, J.Miley, Barnes, J.Murphy, Almiron, Al.Harrison, Willock, Sanusi, Turner-Cooke, Parkinson, Isak.

Bruno flew directly from Brazil to join the squad, while both Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon were omitted after their extended service with England at the Euros.

Lewis Miley, Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, Callum Wilson
, Matt Targett and Joe White missed out due to injury while Garang Kuol, Ellis Stanton, Dylan Charlton, Johnny Emerson and Anthony Munda stood down from the squad that went to Hull on Saturday.

Stats:

This will be Newcastle's third-ever visit to Japan and they'll play their sixth and seventh games there:

1982/83 Japan XI won 4-0 Waddle 2, Keegan, Clarke
1982/83 Syria XI drew 1-1 McCreery
1982/83 Yamaha Motor won 1-0 Waddle
1982/83 Botafogo drew 0-0

Two wins and two draws were enough to see Arthur Cox's Magpies lift the Japan Cup, playing games in Toyko, Okayama, Nagoya and then back to Toyko.

Both Toyko games took place in the old National Stadium that was opened in 1958 and demolished in 2015.

The site is now occupied by the new National Stadium that was first used in 2020 and will host Newcastle's game against Yokohama on Saturday.

1996/97 Gamba Osaka (a) lost 1-3 Ferdinand

Kevin Keegan's side rounded off an Asian tour that saw them visit Thailand and Singapore by playing in Osaka.

Book launch this week

There's a free event* at Waterstones in Newcastle city centre on Wednesday, as former Newcastle United scout Paul Montgomery launches his book, "Rough Diamond."

Paul will be joined by veteran local journalist John Gibson and ex-Magpies Roy Aitken, Alan Foggon and Lee Clark.

It's a 7pm start and tickets are free of charge (despite what it says on the Waterstones website) but space is limited, meaning that reservations are required. This can be done by emailing [email protected]

Following a successful run there last year, "Love It If We Beat Them" returns to the Live Theatre on Newcastle Quayside from September 10th to the 28th.

NUFC.com readers can buy tickets for just £19.96 by using promo code NUFC

No change to the loyalty point system, with points only applied to season ticket holder accounts once it has been confirmed that it was used to gain entry.

Spot checks of ID to continue unchanged, with the manner in which they are conducted to be subject to review.

No change to the situation where away tickets can be transferred, but further consultation to take place over a possible limited change to that rule.

While the search continues for new head coaches at both U18 and U21 level, Newcastle's academy and development squads are in Spain for a training camp.

They are based in and around the Pinatar Arena in Murcia, a venue that the Magpies have used at both youth and senior level several times previously.

Update:
Tonali returns

Wednesday saw Newcastle play a training game against Championship side Burnley behind closed doors at United's Darsley Park training ground.

Details are scarce (amid online claims of a 2-3 loss), but The Times confirm that Sandro Tonali featured for the Magpies - his first appearance since October 2023, when the midfielder began a ban for breaking betting regulations.

That suspension ends late next month but extends to include any non-competitive games registered with the FA, meaning that Tonali isn't able to feature in any of United's public pre-season friendlies.

Now managed by ex-Magpie Scott Parker, this is the third time in four years that Burnley have provided pre-season opposition in similar training games, having done so in both 2021 and 2022.

Update:
Dawson departs

Newcastle United Development Coach Ben Dawson has left the club with immediate effect to take up a first team coaching role at Leicester City.

His departure ends a decade-long association with the Magpies that included periods in charge of the U18 and U21 sides and a brief stint as interim first team boss ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Also moving to the Foxes from Crystal Palace is physio James Haycock, who was previously at Gallowgate.

Dawson's departure leaves the Magpies with vacancies at both U18 and U21 Lead Coach level, following the departure of Graeme Carrick to join brother Michael at Boro earlier this summer.

On This Day in History
29th July

Born Or Died:

1993 Ayoze Perez born Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. (2014-19)

United's first permanent signing in 18 months was a striker arriving for an undisclosed fee on a "long-term contract" from Spanish second tier club CD Tenerife in June 2014.

A fee of less than £2m was reportedly paid for a player who had scored 16 times in 34 games the previous season and who was 12 months away from becoming a free agent.

Debuting for Tenerife's B team during 2012, Perez was blooded in their senior squad in April 2013 and was scouted by various clubs including Porto, Seville, Valencia, Schalke 04, Manchester City, Arsenal and Everton.

A mooted transfer to Swansea City in the January 2014 window was mothballed as the Swans prepared to jettison manager Michael Laudrup and Newcastle announced that the signing was complete in early June.

Perez then made his bow for in the club's opening pre-season game at League One side Oldham Athletic, before joining his colleagues on the plane to New Zealand
.

Giving notice of his promise with a fine goal in a friendly at Sheffield Wednesday, Ayoze debuted competitively off the bench in our opening day home loss to Manchester City.

His first goal for the club came at Spurs and was followed by strikes against Liverpool, West Brom (home and away), Arsenal, Everton and Swansea - a fine haul for a player branded as "one for the future."

The form of Ayoze and his intelligent play was in stark contast to the more costly Emmanuel Riviere and while Papiss Cisse flattered to deceive as usual, the young Spaniard did his bit to avoid relegation.

Newcastle's official website awarded their goal of the season accolade to him for a deft back-heeled effort at the Hawthorns, while he also won two Spanish U21 caps during his first campaign as a Magpie.

Unfortunately his six goals were unable to stop United tumbling into the Championship the following season.

However, Perez provided some vital goals in the promotion campaign, scoring twice against Preston to secure an instant return and grabbing a priceless winner at Brighton.

Top scorer in our first season back in the Premier League with eight after a brace in the last game of the season against Chelsea, he also netted twice in the FA Cup.

What proved to be his fifth and final season as a Magpie began slowly, taking 12 games before breaking his seasonal duck.

That header was enough to beat Watford at home and secure United's first league win of the season at the tenth attempt - Perez celebrating by sticking his fingers in both ears, a response to booing of him in previous games and criticism on social media.

Improved results and displays followed as Perez began to gel with Salomon Rondon - another upturn coming with the arrival of fellow Spanish speaker Miguel Almiron in the January 2019 transfer window.

Ending the season with 13 goals in all competitions (his best at the club), that tally including a first hat-trick in Newcastle colours, at home to Southampton.

Ten days after confirmation came that Rafa Benitez was leaving his post, fellow Spaniard Perez confirmed his departure in July.

Despite links to Spanish sides, he joined Leicester City after the Foxes bid £30m to trigger a contractual release clause - having scored the winning goal at the King Power Stadium in both the previous two seasons.

His first City season brought eight goals in 40 games including a hat-trick in the 9-0 win at Southampton and of course a strike on his return to SJP.

Silverware followed the next season as the Foxes beat Chelsea at Wembley in the FA Cup Final, but the 2021/22 campaign was his least effective, Ayoze breaking his PL duck on the final day with a brace against his favourite opponent, Southampton.

Remaining a peripheral figure, a mid-season loan exit to Real Betis was then followed by a permanent switch in summer 2023 after his Leicester contract had expired.

And his form led to a first senior call-up to the Spanish national team - almost a decade after his last U21 cap - marking his debut against Andorra in June 2024 with a goal.

Selected for the Euro 2024 squad along with fellow former Magpies Mikel Merino and Joselu, Perez made one substitute appearance totaling 13 minutes against Italy as Spain won the tournament.

The 29 year-old linked up once again with fellow former Ranger Jean Alain Boumsong, having played alongside the French defender at Ibrox the previous season.

Having faced sub-standard opposition thus far in the shape of Norwich City (testimonial) and Lillestrom (Intertoto Cup), Glenn Roeder's side had a wake-up call at SJP from Ronald Koeman's Dutchmen.

Damien Duff debuted but his new colleagues were two down by the interval, with little to suggest that a revival was on the cards.

However, after conceding a third goal soon after the restart, a reshaped United team made a game of it and could have salvaged an unlikely draw in the final seconds.

After the 1-6 humiliation at Leyton Orient the previous Saturday, another League One side lined up to take a scalp at SJP.

A large and boisterous away support boosted the meagre midweek crowd and inevitably abused Newcastle captain-for-the-night, Alan Smith at every opportunity.

The best chances fell to the home side, but all to defenders, Ryan Taylor, Sebastien Bassong and Fabricio Coloccini all failing when well placed in front of goal.

Meanwhile, United's other alleged striking target, Loic Remy, was in pre-season training at QPR but had failed to appear in any of their five friendly fixtures.

City's Trialist A (aka Reece Thompson) ensured that Magpies boss Steve McClaren endured a miserable night back home in his birthplace.

The League Two hosts took two first half opportunities handed to them by poor defending to net and although birthday boy Ayoze Perez halved the deficit, another forgettable display saw United beaten.

Striker Aleksander Mitrovic debuted and there was a senior bow for rookie Lewis Suddick.

United suffered their first pre-season loss as they were beaten by their Bundesliga hosts at a scorching Opel Arena.

Trailing to an effort from Levin Oztunali, Jesus Gamez equalised with what would be his only goal for the club - a shot that deflected home off a defender.

New signing Mikel Merino joined the action shortly before the hosts regained the lead when ex-smoggie, Viktor Fischer, beat Freddie Woodman from distance.
