October live PL games
Premier League fixtures selected for live UK TV broadcast have been
confirmed until the end of October, with two of Newcastle's three scheduled
games that month altered:
Sat 05.10.2024 Everton (a) 5.30pm Sky
Sat 19.10.2024 Brighton (h) 3pm no UK TV
Sun 27.10.2024 Chelsea (a) 2pm Sky
2024/25:
Fratt's my boy
Matt Ritchie has completed a free transfer return to former club
Portsmouth, following his exit from SJP.
Now 34, the Hampshire-born midfielder made the first of 10 senior
competitive appearances for Pompey in the 2009/10 season before making a
permanent move to Swindon Town in 2011.
Newly-promoted Portsmouth kick off their Championship campaign at Leeds
United on Saturday.
Update:
Sela Weekender
The Magpies conclude their pre-season programme with home games on
successive days this weekend.
Fri 09.08.2024 NUFC v Girona (Spain) (7.30pm)
Sat 10.08.2024 NUFC v Brest (France) (4pm)
The event is labelled as the Sela Weekender, but rather
than last year's four team Sela Cup format, the trophy will go to the winners
of Saturday's game.
Presumably that would require a penalty shootout if the game was drawn after
90 minutes.
Tickets remain on public sale now online
here. Note that there's no weekend ticket available.
NUWFC will also be in friendly action against AC Milan women on Saturday
(1pm), with the winners of that fixture playing for the inaugural Sela
Cup.
Saturday
tickets include admission to both the men's and women's games.
Both Girona and Brest finished third in their respective leagues last season,
meaning that they will be playing Champions League football this time
around.
The two sides were in friendly action against Italian sides last weekend,
Girona beating Napoli 2-0 and Brest sharing four goals with Juventus.
Team:
Callum Wilson, Lewis Miley,
Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Targett remain out, with Joe White
and Trevan Sanusi reporting ailments in pre-season.
Kieran Trippier, Anthony Gordon, John Ruddy, Martin Dubravka and Mark
Gillespie are yet to feature in pre-season, while Dylan Charlton, Johnny
Emerson, Garang Kuol, Anthony Munda, Leo Shahar, Ellis Stanton and Ciaran
Thompson didn't travel to Japan.
Ryan Fraser and
Isaac Hayden
remain away from the first team squad, but Jamal Lewis has featured in three
of the four publicised friendlies despite his uncertain future.
Sandro Tonali remains ineligible to play under the conditions of his
suspension.

Update:
Transfer bids made:
responses awaited

Writing for The Athletic, the usually well-informed David Ornstein
has divulged that Newcastle are in contact with Crystal Palace over central
defender Marc Guehi.
Negotiations are said to ongoing for the 24 year-old England
international who has two years left on his current contract at Selhurst
Park. A bid of £60m has been claimed in the media.
Born in the Ivory Coast, Guehi moved to South London as a youngster and was
picked up by Chelsea at youth level and progressed through their academy
(emulating current Magpies Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall).
Making two League Cup appearances in the 2019/20 season during his time at
Stamford Bridge, Marc was loaned out to Championship side Swansea City -
returning to South Wales for the 2020/21 campaign.
An £18m transfer then took the defender to Crystal Palace in July 2021,
gaining his first England cap the following March.
Meanwhile a £10m deal is reportedly in place for William Osula, Sheffield United's
21 year-old Danish-born striker.
Osula's most recent
competitive appearance for the Blades came from the bench during their 1-5
Premier League loss at SJP last April.
He netted twice in pre-season for them but didn't feature on Friday against
Huddersfield Town - their last friendly before their Championship
season-opener at Preston North End on Friday.
Sky Sports News report that the Magpies are in "advanced
talks" for Osula, claiming a £10m initial fee with £5m in add-ons.
He's under contract until 2027.
The interest is presumably prompted by Callum Wilson's latest injury setback
and a lack of forward cover from the club's academy.
Debuting for Sheffield United in the Championship in March 2022, Osula
played and scored in a training ground game against Newcastle U21s in July
2022.
That was then followed by a report in the Sheffield Star newspaper
that the Magpies held an interest in signing the player, although no more
was heard after that.
Loaned out to League One Derby County soon after, William netted five times
in all competitions for the Rams, returning to Bramall Lane last season to
score three goals (all in the FA Cup). He made nine PL starts and a further
12 substitute appearances without netting.

Academy updates
Ahead of the new season,
Newcastle remain busy in the transfer market at youth level. Here's what we
know - or not - about the incomers so far:
Officially announced:
Aaron Epia (defender) Everton
Ezra Tika-Lemba (defender) West Ham
Miodrag Pivas (defender) FK Jedinstvo
Kayden Lucas (striker) Clevedon Town
Others yet to be announced:
James Taylor (goalkeeper) Hemel Hempstead Town
Rory Finneran (midfielder) Blackburn Rovers
Kyle Fitzgerald (midfielder) Galway United
Mo Sedibeh (striker)
Bradford City
Both Fitzgerald and Sedibeh
featured as trialists for Newcastle U21s against South Shields on Sunday.
News outlets in Ireland report that Fitzgerald will play on for Galway until
his 18th birthday in January when his contract with the Magpies is concluded
- following the example of defender Alex Murphy who moved from Galway
to Newcastle in July 2022 aged 18.
Moving on to the younger age groups, last week's U15 game in Japan featured
two 14 year-old recruits:
CJ Afumuzor (midfielder) Portsmouth
Les Yeutembip (defender) Charlton Athletic
It's also reported that United have signed up:
Theo Benjamin (position tbc)

Their elders meanwhile host the mackems on Monday August

Update:
Tommy Cassidy RIP

We're sorry to report the
passing of former Magpie Tommy Cassidy on Friday, at the age of 73.
The Northern Ireland international made a £25,000 switch from Glentoran in
his native Belfast during October 1970, debuting in a 0-2 defeat against
Southampton at the Dell the following month.
That would be the first of 239 senior appearances in all competitions over
the next decade, before moving on to join Burnley for the 1980/81
season.
Originally a striker he became a regular in midfield, finishing on the
losing side for the Magpies at Wembley in the 1974 FA Cup Final and 1976
League Cup Final.
Cassidy's 28 league and cup goals included a brace in a 3-2 home win over
Manchester United in 1973 and six in his final season, memorably including
one in the 3-1 derby victory at Gallowgate on New Years Day 1980.
A late flourish for the Clarets included winning the Third Division title
and appearing for Northern Ireland at the 1982 World Cup Finals, the last of
his 24 caps as substitute in the epic 1-0 wins over hosts Spain.
Ending his playing days in Cyprus with Apoel Nicosia, Tommy's managerial
career began there before spells in charge of Gateshead, Glentoran, Ards,
Sligo Rovers, Workington, Newcastle Blue Star, Whitby Town and Blyth
Spartans - leaving Croft Park in October 2012.
2021 brought the sad news that Tommy had been living with dementia since
2017.
Update:
No Summer holiday
Among the free agent players to have taken advantage of a PFA-sponsored
pre-season training camp are former Magpie duo Dwight Gayle and Ciaran
Clark.
Both now 34, the pair were clubless after leaving Derby County and Stoke
City respectively, joining around 30 other unattached players at the
Champneys Springs hotel in Leicestershire.
And in the case of Gayle, the programme may have paid dividends with League
Two Stockport County giving him a trial and some pitch time in a kickabout
against Blackburn Rovers last Friday night.

Change kit launch

Newcastle launched their new
third kit during the club's Japanese tour Shola
Ameobi meeting fans at a sports shop in the Ginza area of Tokyo.
That's on sale now from JD Sports online
here
The inspiration for the colour scheme looks to be the 1999/00 season change
kit, reviving the NUFC round crest not seen on a Magpies strip since
1988.

Eagle-eyed
NUFC.com reader Neil Rutherford spotted the 2024/25 change
strip - or the shirt anyway - already on sale in a sports shop near Times
Square in NYC, USA.
A UK release date for that is still awaited.

Born Or Died:
1880
Ronald Orr born, Bartonholm, Scotland. (1901-08)

Scottish International forward
who won two caps while at SJP, joining the club from St.Mirren along with right
back Bob Bennie.
Debuting in a 0-0 draw at Blackburn Rovers in September 1901, Ronald then
marked his home debut the following week with a brace in a 5-1 victory over
Stoke.
Six barren appearances then followed before a glorious return to scoring form
with four of his side's eight goals against Notts County.
Orr won two League Championships with Newcastle and finished on the losing side
to Everton in the 1906 FA Cup Final.
Joining Liverpool for £350 in April 1908, Orr scored 39 times in 112
appearances for the reds - including their 1000th goal in league football -
against the mackems.
A leg injury sustained in September 1911 curtailed his involvement in their
first team and he opted to return to Scotland early in 1912, signing for Raith
Rovers.
At the age of 33, Ronald signed for South Shields and also guested for Fulham
in friendly matches during World War One.
Orr was living in the Ayrshire town of Kilwinning when his death was reported
in March 1924. NB: some sources record his date of birth as August 6th
1876.

1916 Ernie
Hall
born, Crawcrook.
(1933-37)
Centre half who began his career with local side Crawcrook Albion before
moving on to West Wylam and then Newcastle for a £10 transfer fee during
September 1933.
Ernie spent most of his SJP career in the
reserves, aside from successive senior outings at home to Blackpool in
April 1936 and at Plymouth Argyle a week later.
Ernie joined Brighton and Hove Albion later that year and signed for Stoke City shortly
before the outbreak of World War II.
Joining the RAF, he sadly lost his life when his Wellington bomber was shot
down over occupied Europe during 1944.

1933 Ken
Waugh
born, Newcastle.
(1952-56)
Right back who arrived at
Gallowgate from local football during August 1952 and appeared thereafter for
the reserves.
Making a senior debut in a 0-1 defeat at
Arsenal in October 1955, Ken played his final senior game in a 1-1 home draw
against Huddersfield Town five months later.
Moving on to Hartlepool in December 1956 at a cost of £680 Ken remained at the Victoria
Ground until the conclusion of the 1961/62 season. He later emigrated to Australia.
Ken passed away in June 2001.
1992 Mehdi Abeid
born, Montreuil, France.
(2011-15)

Midfielder who signed a five year deal with Newcastle
on July 1st 2011, following the expiry of his deal with Racing Club Lens.
Agreeing a contract after a trial at SJP, English-speaking Abeid
spent eight years at Lens (although never making the first team) and
played alongside fellow Magpie Yven Moyo for France U18s.
His first public outing for United came at Darlington in pre-season - although many failed to see him as he replaced Alan Smith in the
aftermath of the "Sammy scores" pitch invasion daftness.
And the League Cup tie at Nottingham Forest in September 2011 saw Alan
Pardew hand Mehdi his competitive senior debut.
A second outing then followed in the FA Cup at home to Blackburn Rovers early
in 2012 and scored twice in ten reserve league
appearances.
That summer saw talk
of a loan move to a Championship side but Mehdi was in the starting XI for our
opening two pre-season games and then came off the bench in the third one to
net against Fenerbahce.
Replacing the injured Dan Gosling in Faro against Olympiakos, Abeid
furthered his cause by coolly converting our final kick in the penalty shootout
to avoid defeat.
Appearing off the bench during United's Europa League home tie against Maritimo,
Mehdi then started the meaningless away game in
Bordeaux.
A poor display that night did little to further his reputation however and
after another non-performance at Brighton in the FA Cup, Abeid was loaned to
SPL side St.Johnstone.
Advised to find a new club in summer of 2013, a return to Perth looked or a reunion at Millwall with his former Saints boss
Steve Lomas were both predicted.
In the event though, Mehdi featured briefly for United in a friendly at
Motherwell before joining Greek side Panathinaikos on a season-long loan deal.
That productive switch saw Abeid score ten goals to help the Greens to
lift the Greek Cup, finish fourth in the regular season and secure a Champions
League place.
Mehdi featured in pre-season trips to New Zealand
and Germany and appeared in Capital One Cup wins at Gillingham, Crystal Palace
and Manchester City (although he saw red in the victory at Selhurst
Park).
A Premier League bow then came in a 1-0
home win over Liverpool in November 2014 - keeping his place for a 2-0 success
at West Bromwich Albion a week later.
Having featured at international level for France as a youngster, Abeid
switched allegiance to Algeria but broke a toe in training following a call-up.
Making what looked like a hasty return for the 1-1 draw at Burnley in December,
Mehdi was then sidelined with the injury and was forced to withdraw from
Algeria's African Nations Cup squad.
Returning for January's win at Hull City, he featured another nine
times that season and made a senior
international debut for Algeria against the Seychelles.
The subject of an approach from German club Fortuna Dusseldorf, a permanent
return to Panathinaikos was then sealed for an undisclosed fee in August 2015.
Joining French side Dijon in August 2016, he remained there for three seasons
before departing as a free agent and staying in France with Nantes.
That move came after helping Algeria to victory in the African Nations Cup
Finals - although he remained on the bench for the final victory over Senegal.
Mehdi left Nantes in January 2021 in favour of UAE side Al-Nasr before moving on to UAE Pro League side Khor
Fakkan.
2024 found him a free agent.

With 11 minutes of this hastily-arranged kickabout
remaining, Newcastle led by the only goal and had seen a
Yeading "equaliser" ruled out for an offside
flag - hardly the sort of scoreline to engender a feelgood
factor on Tyneside.
However, a late flurry of home goals ensured a veneer of
respectability to the final result.
Debutant Craig Moore opened the scoring as he headed
home Emre's corner on 39 minutes, but that
was a rare highlight in a muddled first half when the
non-league side certainly weren't outclassed.
With the small crowd present threatening to doze off in
the sunshine, Newcastle belatedly got their shooting boots
on in front of the empty Gallowgate stands - as Milner,
Emre and a Ameobi brace gave the full time
scoreline a more palatable look.
Italian trialist Franceso Coco appeared, but a lack of
fitness was evident to all present.
