Update
:
Guehi still an Eagle

Update: With no public progress over his proposed move, Guehi was among the Palace players who held an open training session at Selhurst Park on Thursday.

The Eagles hosted Nantes in a pre-season kickabout on Sunday and Guehi played 62 minutes of a 1-1 draw.

Earlier: The usually well-informed Athletic writer David Ornstein has divulged Newcastle's negotiations with Crystal Palace over central defender Marc Guehi.

The 24 year-old England international who has two years left on his current contract at Selhurst Park. A bid/price tag of £60m has been claimed in the media, with up to 20% payable to Chelsea via a buy-on clause.

Born in the Ivory Coast, Guehi moved to South London as a youngster and was picked up by Chelsea at youth level and progressed through their academy (emulating current Magpies Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall).

Making two League Cup appearances in the 2019/20 season during his time at Stamford Bridge, Marc was loaned out to Championship side Swansea City - returning to South Wales for the 2020/21 campaign.

An £18m transfer then took the defender to Crystal Palace in July 2021, gaining his first England cap the following March.

Cup of cheer. Again.

Newcastle  1  Stade Brestois 29  0

Newcastle's second home win in as many days saw them retain the Sela Cup on Saturday; a revised format making the meeting with Brest a winner-takes-all tie.

Eddie Howe's side just about deserved the silverware that came their way thanks to a well-struck effort from Harvey Barnes - the French visitors having more sights of goal overall but failing to take advantage.

Clad in the white third kit and with a different XI to that which had overwhelmed Girona on Friday, United again got off to a positive start and led after 15 minutes.

Lloyd Kelly's perceptive ball down the left found Barnes and he cut in on to his right foot before burying a low effort into the far corner of the Leazes goal.

Leading the line on his debut, new arrival William Osula swept the ball home in the 23rd minute but had strayed offside when latching on to a fine ball from Barnes.

That was Osula's best moment but he did show a willingness to hold the ball up that bore comparison to a certain Swede - raw material certainly, but with physical attributes we're incapable of sourcing from within.

Making his first senior start meanwhile, 18 year-old Alfie Harrison's impact was minimal; alibeit from a deeper midfield role than he's occupied so far at U21 level.

The visitors had several near misses; Martin Dubravka defying Jonas Martin and Jordan Amavi while an effort Pereira Lage fell narrowly off target.

Action after the break was minimal with nothing of note from Newcastle in an attacking sense, the absence of Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon profound.

Trevan Sanusi meanwhile was unable to prompt anything when as he was afforded some pitch time for the second day running - the only player who did so.

There were more valuable minutes in the legs for the Magpies though as United's public pre-season programme concluded successfully, especially Joe Willock whose 88 minute contribution was his longest outing of 2024.

One last-ditch clearance left Fabian Schar limping and he played on for a time before hobbling off, but Howe was unconcerned by that when speaking post-match.

Multiple changes to the Brest side failed to inspire an equaliser that would have taken the contest to penalties; Kieran Trippier collecting the trophy from Darren Eales and lifting it in unison with Bruno Guimaraes.

That followed the presentation of the inaugural Women's Cup to Newcastle United Women, who shared four goals with their AC Milan counterparts earlier in the day before triumphing 4-3 in the shootout.

PS: Down on the south coast meanwhile, Friday's foes Girona lost 2-3 at Bournemouth while next Saturday's opponents Southampton drew 0-0 with Getafe.

Team: Dubravka (Vlachodimos 46), Trippier (Ashby 68), Schar (Stanton 82), Kelly, Lewis, Harrison (Sanusi 46), Guimaraes, Willock (Munda 88), Almiron, Osula (Hernes 68), Barnes.
Subs n/u: Gillespie, Emerson, Heffernan, Shahar.

Goal: Barnes 15

Brest: Bizot, Lala (Zogbe 72), Chardonnet (Ndiaye 73), Le Cardinal, Amavi, Periera Lage, Martin (Mbock 72), Magnetti (Camblan 72), Camara, Le Douaron (Kante 88), Del Castillo.
Subs n/u: Coudert, Ajorque, Lees-Melou.

Crowd: 33,760 - 1,802 more than were present for the previous evening's victory over Girona. Around 30 fans were in attendance supporting the visitors and were accommodated in Level 7.

Eddie Howe said:

"A really tough game today. We weren't quite at full speed and a lot of players needed the game because they haven't had the minutes. We looked a bit rusty and slightly off, technically and tactically."

On William Osula:

"I loved the goal - the pace, the run, the finish. He didn't know he was offside and I'm still not sure he was.

"He hadn't trained a great deal because he'd had concussion so there was some rustiness. You can see why we brought him to the club."

On Trevan Sanusi:

"I think he's got bits to learn, of course, for someone his age. Tactically he's got things to improve. We've got to build him up physically to protect him and to make sure he's robust enough to deal with the rigours of the Premier League."

On Jamal Lewis:

"While he's still here we'll treat him with the respect he definitely deserves from how he's conducted himself.

"He's had a good pre-season but there is a chance he could end up leaving. We'll work with him to find the solution he wants for his career."

On transfers:

"Difficult to say exactly what's going to happen. These things aren't exactly in my hands and I'm not really dealing with them, now we have other people in place to take control of those situations, allowing me to focus on coaching the team.

"They have to make sense, whether that's a positional need or something becomes available in the market that we really like.

"Of course, you're looking to strengthen the group and improve the first team."

Referee:
Tony Harrington.

VAR: n/a

Stats:

There was a club debut for William Osula, sporting the 18 squad number that had been vacant since the close season departure of goalkeeper Lorius Karius.

Along with first pre-season outings for Martin Dubravka and Kieran Trippier, that took the number of players utilised in pre-season to 37 - excluding Sandro Tonali.

Dane deal done

Newcastle confirmed on Thursday that they had completed the signing of William Osula from Championship side Sheffield United.

The 21 year-old Danish-born striker joins in a reported £10m deal, although the fee is officially undisclosed.

Speaking to reporters Eddie Howe said:

"He's a player I've known since Jason Tindall's time at Sheffield United really. We've been tracking him for three years. He excites us. Raw ingredients to become a great centre-forward. Good physical profile at 6"3, 6"4 and good technical skills. Areas of his game need to develop but he's coming to the right place to do that.

"It's a very tricky situation. We have two outstanding centre-forwards and to find someone to compliment them isn't an easy job. To find a young striker to develop, he won't have two better to learn from. He's coming to a healthy environment.

"Financially, it has to work for us as well. It's a good deal for us. We've got a lot of work to do with him but he's a good character."

Osula's most recent competitive appearance for the Blades came from the bench during their 1-5 Premier League loss at St. James' Park last April.

He netted twice in pre-season for them but didn't feature on Friday against Huddersfield Town, as the finishing touches were put to his Tyneside switch.

Sky Sports News report that the deal is a £10m initial fee with £5m in add-ons, prompted by Callum Wilson's latest injury setback and a lack of forward cover from the club's academy.

Debuting for Sheffield United in the Championship in March 2022, Copenhagen-born Osula played and scored in a training ground game against Newcastle U21s in July 2022.

That was then followed by a report in the Sheffield Star newspaper that the Magpies held an interest in signing the player, although no more was heard after that.

Loaned out to League One Derby County soon after, William netted five times in all competitions for the Rams, returning to Bramall Lane last season to score three goals (all in the FA Cup). He made nine PL starts and a further 12 substitute appearances without netting.

He's set to become the third Danish-born player to appear for the Newcastle in the Premier League, after Jon Dahl Tomasson and Peter Lovenkrands.

Older readers meanwhile will recall Benny Arentoft, Benny Kristensen....and Frank Pingel.

Academy updates

Ahead of the new season, Newcastle remain busy in the transfer market at youth level. Here's what we know - or not - about the incomers so far:

Officially announced:

Aaron Epia (defender) Everton
Ezra Tika-Lemba (defender) West Ham
Miodrag Pivas (defender) FK Jedinstvo
Kayden Lucas (striker) Clevedon Town

Others yet to be announced:

James Taylor (goalkeeper) Hemel Hempstead Town
Rory Finneran (midfielder) Blackburn Rovers
Kyle Fitzgerald (midfielder) Galway United
Mo Sedibeh (striker) Bradford City

Both Fitzgerald and Sedibeh featured as trialists for Newcastle U21s against South Shields on Sunday.

News outlets in Ireland report that Fitzgerald will play on for Galway until his 18th birthday in January when his contract with the Magpies is concluded - following the example of defender Alex Murphy who moved from Galway to Newcastle in July 2022 aged 18.

Moving on to the younger age groups, last week's U15 game in Japan featured two 14 year-old recruits:

CJ Afumuzor (midfielder) Portsmouth
Les Yeutembip (defender) Charlton Athletic

It's also reported that United have signed up:

Theo Benjamin (position tbc)

On This Day in History
11th August

Born Or Died:

1971 Mike Jeffrey born, Liverpool.
(1993-95)

Striker/midfielder acquired from Doncaster Rovers by Kevin Keegan in October 1993 at a cost of £85K, plus reserve David Roche.

The son of Rovers legend Alick, Mike began his career at Bolton Wanderers in 1989 before joining Donny three years later.

Netting against United during a pre-season friendly at Belle Vue in August 1992 brought Jeffrey on to KK's radar, although it took over a year for a deal to be concluded.

Netting in reserve games against York City and Wolves soon after his arrival, Mike's senior debut came in place of Scott Sellars in a 2-1 at Spurs in December 1993.

Not called upon again until an away defeat to Manchester City the following April, the highlight of Jeffrey's career came at Maine Road the following season when he netted during a League Cup tie.

However, that proved to be his final first team appearance, with the signing of Paul Kitson pushing him further down the SJP striker pecking order.

Signing off with a hat trick against Mansfield Town reserves and a brace in the Senior Cup Final win over Blyth, Rotherham United paid £100K for his services in June 1995.

A first team regular at Millmoor, five goals in 22 appearances prompted interest from Fortuna Sittard and he moved to Holland midway through his first season.

Four years at Sittard culminated in a Dutch FA Cup Final appearance in 1999, although Jeffrey's side were beaten 0-2 by Ajax.

Joining Kilmarnock on a free transfer the following season, Jeffrey ended his playing days at Grimsby Town, going on loan to Scunthorpe United in 2002.

Joining his family's car sales business back on Merseyside, Mike also played local amateur football.

1979 Paul Talbot born, Gateshead.
(1995-2000)

Full-back who failed to force his way into the senior squad and was released by United in March 2000, signing for York City.

Having made six appearances in League Two for the Minstermen, Talbot wasn't retained and left Bootham Crescent that summer, signing for hometown club Gateshead.

Later spells with Burton Albion and Queen of the South before returning to the region with Spennymoor United.

Paul later appeared for Newcastle Benfield, Durham City, Gateshead (again) Newcastle Blue Star, Bedlington Terriers, Sunderland RCA, Harrogate Town, South Shields and latterly Benfield again.

What Else?

1965 A young Magpies XI lost 2-3 to Hartlepools United in front of 3,432 fans at the Victoria Ground.

Peter Noble and Joe Butler netted for the visitors, but an own goal by Bob Moncur ultimately won it for the hosts.

Newcastle fielded a trialist named only as Arica in the second half, contemporary reports calling him "a Turkish student."

The Magpies began their pre-season with a visit to Ayresome Park and a friendly against Jack Charlton's Boro side.

Future Magpies Stuart Boam and David Mills played for Boro, while a head injury to United 'keeper Iam McFaul saw rookie Tony Bell play for half an hour while McFaul had two stitches inserted in the wound before returning.

This game saw a debut for Keith Armstrong, a forward who joined United from Sunderland on a non-contract basis but wasn't retained.

However, manager Bill McGarry wasn't there to see it, preferring to go scouting at the Carlisle United versus Wrexham match.

Armstrong went on to play for various Finnish teams before moving into management in that country with HJK Helsinki in 2001.

Among the Sparta squad was Louis Van Gaal, who returned to SJP in charge of Barcelona almost two decades later.

Team: Hardwick (Carr 46), Brownlie, Barton, Bird (tbc), Davies, Martin, Armstrong, Pearson (Lever), Shoulder, Withe, Hibbitt.

Team: Carr, Craggs, Saunders, Trewick, Clarke, Haddock, Todd (Carney), Doyle (Wharton), Varadi, Anderson (Cartwright), Waddle (Ferris).

24 hours after beginning their pre-season games with a 6-1 win at Hamburg Altona, United helped their lower league hosts christen a new stadium.

A live TV engagement saw Kevin Keegan arrive at the venue by helicopter 30 minutes before kick-off. Kevin Carr saved a 62nd minute penalty from Bendler.

Team: Thomas (Carr 46), Anderson (Haddock 55), Ryan, McCreery (Trewick), Clarke, Carney (Ferris), Keegan, McDonald, Varadi, Wharton, Waddle.

1984 A Magpies XI visited Ashington's Portland Park as part of the Colliers' Centenary celebrations, recording a 7-0 victory.

Newcastle's pre-season preparations continued with defeat at Brunton Park to a Cumbrians side managed by Harry Gregg.

Rookie duo Kevin Scott and Jeff Wrightson featured for the visitors, while ex-Magpie Wes Saunders headed the winner for Carlisle.

Team: Thomas, Anderson, Bailey, McDonald, Clarke (Wrightson 75), Scott, Davies, Wharton, Allon, Beardsley (Cunningham 46), Stewart.

A much improved Newcastle performance secured third place in the four team Tournament held in Budapest.

Team: Burridge, Aitken, Sweeney (Stimson), Scott, Ranson, Dillon (O’Brien),  Simpson,  Askew, Gallacher, McGhee (Quinn), Brazil (Sloan).

(John Anderson travelled with the squad but failed to participate after a fallout with United boss Jim Smith).

United's cause was helped when the Belgians were reduced to ten men after Iovino was dismissed for whacking Neil Simpson.

Mark Stimson opened the scoring with a header which went in via both posts and O'Brien rounded the keeper to seal victory.

The tournament was won by hosts Ferencvaros, who beat fellow Hungarians Videoton 4-3 on penalties after the final had ended in a 1-1 draw.

The secretive nature of the match meant that only five United fans were present -
their story is told here.

1991 A reserve XI defeated Coldstream 3-0, with Archie Gourlay getting two and Anth Cole the other.

United's appearance was arranged by then Magpies Chairman George Forbes (a Coldstream resident) to christen new clubhouse, changing rooms and re-laid playing surface at Home Park.

The Charity Shield, although their wasn't much bloody charity about it, as the reigning champions taught Newcastle something of a footballing lesson.

As the dispirited Toon supporters left the stadium, a cloudburst gave them a good soaking, and roadworks up the A1 completed the misery, causing hours of delays.

Future Magpies Nicky Butt and Ronny Johnsen appeared for the Red Devils, the former finding the net during the first half.

Team: Srnicek, Watson, Peacock, Albert, Beresford, Beardsley (Asprilla 75), Batty, Lee, Ginola (Gillespie 77) Shearer, Ferdinand.

Rob Lee's testimonial game attracted a poor attendance, partly attributable to the box office allure of Bilbao - on a weekend when Barcelona were elsewhere.

However, many folks begrudged forking out £20 for a kickabout which came midway between competitive Intertoto Cup home games - for which the admission was £15.

The principal onfield attraction proved to be the Magpies debut of Laurent Robert, but he confirmed later that a foot injury had partly restricted his contributions.

All in all, a less-than-fitting tribute to one of our best recent signings of the 1990s. There again, Lee hadn't completed ten years at the club anyway, so wasn't really entitled to this!

2003 United's reserve side ran out 4-0 winners at Sam Smith Sports Ground against Northern League newcomers, Benfield Saints.

Scorers were Richard Offiong (2) an own goal and Ben Jackson - the latter who had been subbed off, but then returned.

2004 Newcastle defender Titus Bramble needed a scan to assess the severity of a hamstring injury incurred in training.

That put him out of the season opener at Boro, along with Jonathan Woodgate. And given that Andy O'Brien hadn't trained due to conjunctivitis and Steven Taylor wasn't thought to be ready, an unlikely pairing of Aaron Hughes and Robbie Elliott seemed to be the only choice open to Sir Bobby.

2005 Our Academy side were in action in Blyth but left Croft Park empty-handed, after a defensive lapse allowed the home side a late winner - the only goal of the game.

Three early goals stunned the Trotters and the away fans as we ended a five game Reebok losing run.

And although Nicolas Anelka later replied, the day belonged to Sam Allardyce, who made a triumphant return to Bolton in his first game in charge of United.

Alan Smith, David Rozehnal, Marc Viduka and Geremi debuted, while fellow new boy Claudio Cacapa was an unused substitute.

The victory put us top of the Premier League - after one game....

2010 The Carling Cup Second Round draw set up a first-ever meeting for Newcastle with League Two side Accrington Stanley.

2011 United defender Jose Enrique was on Merseyside for his medical after Liverpool's undisclosed bid was accepted.

A £6m fee was speculated upon for the 25 year-old Spaniard, who had a year to run on his Newcastle contract.

2011 A more welcome Spanish departure saw Deportivo la Coruna confirm they'd signed Xisco. However the move turned out to be a loan only and the misfit striker inevitably found his way back to SJP again.

a muddled pre-season ended with an abject display against the Championship hosts.

First choice players Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse, Yohan Cabaye and Ben Arfa were all absent on a sunny afternoon in South Wales, while the hosts didn't call upon Craig Bellamy.

84th minute substitute, Adam Campbell was probably our man of the match....

Steve Bruce's first competitive game in charge ended with a defeat amid driving rain.

Talk of a fan boycott only partially materialised, but the attendance was still the smallest home league gate since April 2016.

Joelinton made his bow, fellow debutants Allan Saint-Maximin and Jetro Willems joining from the bench in the second half.
