2024/25:
Big Joe defeats cheats

Newcastle  1  Southampton  0

A smart strike from Joelinton in first half added time gave Newcastle a winning start to the season on Saturday - despite having to play with ten men for over an hour.

What had been an indifferent encounter burst into life in the 28th minute when United gained a free kick in the centre circle - only for the focus to shift upfield to the Leazes penalty area that the hosts were defending.

A clash between Fabian Schar and Saint Ben Brereton-Diaz that began when the visiting striker shoved the defender ended with the pair locking horns before the Saint fell to the floor clutching his face.

Referee Craig Pawson issued the Swiss international with a red card that a VAR check upheld; Brereton-Diaz escaping with a booking and incessant barracking from outraged home fans whenever he gained possession thereafter.

Jacob Murphy gave way to Emil Krafth as Eddie Howe's side dropped into a 4-3-2 and a long afternoon of defending to try and grind out a point loomed.

However that script altered somewhat at the end of the half, as a loose pass from Saints 'keeper Alex McCarthy was seized on by Alexander Isak on the right hand side of the box.

His ball infield fell to Joelinton near the penalty spot, who still had work to do but took a touch before tucking a low effort into the corner of the Gallowgate goal - taking what was our only real scoring chance.

Foolhardy though Schar's actions were, they did have the the effect of galvanising colleagues and supporters alike, giving Newcastle a specific task to focus on that they had lacked at 11 versus 11.

That manifested itself in the tunnel at half time when Dan Burn attempted to shake an opponent warmly by the throat and the whole side defended the Gallowgate goal with grim relish after the break.

A plethora of Saints corners were repelled and two opportunities in quick succession for Adam Armstrong to net against his old side were blocked - beginning with a fine intervention from Lewis Hall and then followed just seconds later by Nick Pope's timely tip-over.

As full time began to come into sight there was first appearance in our colours for Lloyd Kelly at left back and a return to the so-called sh*thousery that was a hallmark of performances earlier in Howe's reign.

That included Nick Pope going to ground for treatment on a mysterious injury and some intelligent work from a clearly pumped-up Bruno to engineer free kicks where no indiscretion was immediately apparent....

Regardless of Brereton-Diaz's sneaky conduct, Schar has to bear the blame for being suckered into a response that will sideline him for three matches - and increase the pressure on his club to part with an outrageous amount of money for Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi.

Thanks to everyone who entered our score prediction competition to win a 2024/25 NUFC replica shirt. We'll reveal the winner here on Sunday morning.

Eddie Howe said:

"It wasn’t an enjoyable game to experience.

"The result is unbelievable for us, but how we got there was very, very difficult. The sending off changed the game completely.

"We knew what type of game it would be. Before the sending off we had our moments, but we weren’t in control of the game.

"I don’t know if a sending off ever truly helps you, but it gets the crowd to inspire you – and that made a difference.

"Last season we scored a huge amount of goals but conceded too many. The guys with ten men produced a really good defensive performance.

"To a man we were blocking shots, we were covering space very well. On another day we could have played better with the ball.

"
Emil
(Krafth) came on in a difficult game, and I thought he was magnificent for us. He’s so reliable, has never let us down, and it was a brilliant performance from him.

"We have to grab that sentiment because the season we finished fourth, we had that running through us. We were written off, we were criticised, we were… you name it, there was a lot of stuff thrown at us.

"Of course then when you’re successful, a lot of plaudits come and that’s dangerous sometimes. I’m not saying you want criticism, but you want to feel like you’re fighting against the odds.

"I’ll certainly take that mindset from today because we were against the odds, we were fighting to try to get something from the game and the players did that magnificently.”

On the red card:

"I think it’s really harsh on Fabi, but I think we all know that you can’t give the referee the possibility to even give the red card, so that’s something we’ll learn from.

"The big question is do you want a red card for that. Does Fabi’s action alone warrant a red card? I’m not sure.”

On Bruno Guimaraes:

"Defensively he covered every blade of grass. He was immense today."

On possible acquisitions:

"Of course, we’re looking in the transfer market. We’ve got a period of time left, and we’ll see what we can do.

"Could we do something in the market? Possibly, but conditions have to be right for us.

"As I’ve said all along, we can’t do something that goes against the long-term good of the football club, so we’ll try to make the right decision."

On Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.

"I wouldn’t expect either player back for months. I don’t want to be too specific, but I think they’re both about halfway through their timetable to return.

"There’s still a long way ahead for both players: they’re looking good at the moment, but there’s a lot of work ahead for them.”

Referee:
Craig Pawson - the South Yorkshire official took two Newcastle games last season; the 1-0 PL home win over Brentford and 3-0 FA Cup success at the mackems. Bruno and Anthony Gordon saw yellow in both.

2024/25:
Boro bairns edge it

Newcastle U18s  0  Boro U18s  1

A 53rd minute strike from Frankie Coulson proved to be the difference between the two sides in Saturday's U18 Premier League season opener at Little Benton.

A sweetly-struck effort from the visiting captain found the top corner of Adam Harrison's goal and gave the Teessiders a lead that they preserved despite a late fight back from the home side.

Debutant Mason Miley (brother of Lewis and Jamie) forced Oliver Lloyd into a routine stop on 78 minutes, Matthew Taylor shooting against the Boro goal frame soon after.

Miley again worked an opening but couldn't find the target before fellow substitute Matheos Ferreira broke forward from the right in the final minute of normal time - but could only drive into the side netting.

Team: Harrison, Tika-Lemba (Johnson 76), Durrant (Wooster 89), Watts, Craggs, Cogdon (Miley 64), Brayson (Ferreira 64), Waddani, Neave, Taylor, Bloomer. Sub n/u: Jones.

Latest:
LNER strikes called

From BBC, Friday:

Train drivers at London North Eastern Railway (LNER) are set to strike every weekend in September, October and two in November, union bosses have announced.

Aslef, which represents train drivers, said the walkouts at LNER were due to a breakdown in industrial relations and agreements.

The fresh strike action is separate from an ongoing pay dispute with all train companies, which edged closer to being resolved in England this week after a new pay offer.

LNER, which operates services on the East Coast Mainline between London and Edinburgh and is run by the government, said it was "surprised and disappointed" by the announcement following recent talks.

Aslef said its member drivers at LNER would walk out every Saturday between 31 August and 9 November and on every Sunday from 1 September to 10 November.

The fresh walkouts, which total 22 days, are separate to the long-running row over train driver wages at 16 train companies, which looks set to be resolved in England following a new pay offer made this week.

Latest:
Eagles dared

Eddie Howe refused to be drawn on the subject in Friday's press conference, but it's widely reported that Newcastle have returned with a further increased bid for Crystal Palace's England defender Marc Guehi.

The Eagles kick off the new season at Brentford on Sunday.

2024/25:

U21s live stream

Newcastle have announced that they will provide a free live stream of Monday's PL2 season opener against the mackems on their recently-launched app.

The game is a 7pm kick-off at Whitley Park.

Meanwhile Newcastle U21s were given a bye in the First Round of this season's Northumberland Senior Cup when the draw took place at SJP on Thursday.

The Magpies second string lifted the cup back in May and enter at the Quarter Final Stage.

First Round draw:

Blyth Town v West Allotment Celtic
Newcastle University v Blyth Spartans
North Shields v Ashington
Bedlington Terriers v Newcastle Blue Star
Alnwick Town v Prudhoe YC
Whitley Bay v Heaton Stannington
Morpeth Town v Newcastle Benfield

Ties to be played on or before October 5th.

2024/25:
Sandro clarification

From NUFC, Wednesday:

Newcastle United can announce that Sandro Tonali will return to selection on Wednesday 28th August 2024 following the conclusion of his ten-month ban from competitive football.

The club has received formal confirmation from the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) that the player’s sporting sanction will run up to and including Tuesday 27th August.

Assuming our Carabao Cup visit to Nottingham Forest takes place on Wednesday 28th August, the player will be eligible to feature at the City Ground.

Carabao Cup:
Cup date awaited

Wednesday's Carabao Cup Second Round draw gave Newcastle an away tie against fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest - the third time in just eight seasons that we've met them in this competition.

Second Round ties take place in the week commencing Monday August 26th and all ties in the competition are televised live in the UK this season by Sky Sports.

For the Magpies that will fall between a Sunday trip to Bournemouth and the visit of Spurs to Gallowgate the following Sunday.

Forest meanwhile are at Southampton the Saturday before and host Wolves the following Saturday.

The tie will come ahead of the league double header, with United at the City Ground in November and Nuno Espirito Santo's side on Tyneside in February 2025.

And it provides an early opportunity for Newcastle's Odysseas Vlachodimos and Forest's Elliot Anderson to face their former clubs. Matz Sels and Chris Wood also feature in the Forest squad.

This will be the fifth time that the two clubs have been paired in this competition:

2018/19 lost 1-3 (a) R2
2017/18
lost 2-3 (h) R2
2011/12 won 4-3 (a) R3
1974/75 won 3-0 (h) R2R
1974/75 drew 1-1 (a) R2

It's the seventh successive domestic cup away draw that Newcastle have received since Manchester City visited SJP in last season's Carabao Cup Third Round.

And since visiting Tranmere Rovers in August 2022, Eddie Howe's side have been involved in nine successive all Premier League ties in this competition.

A result must be achieved on the night - if the score is tied after 90 minutes a penalty shootout will ensue.

Northern Section ties:
Barnsley v Sheffield United
Barrow v Derby County
Blackburn Rovers v Blackpool
Everton v Doncaster Rovers
Fleetwood Town v Rotherham United
Grimsby Town v Sheffield Wednesday

Haris Vuckic Buriram (Thailand) to Domzale (Slovenia)

Charity effort continues:
Run for home

Magpies fan Matthew Smith is currently running an 800+ mile route between Bournemouth and Newcastle, taking in all 20 Premier League grounds.

He's the founder of If U Care Share, a charity based in Chester-le-Street that carries out suicide prevention workshops and associated work.

Matthew has taken on this challenge in an attempt to bridge a funding gap affected his charity that he estimates at £135,000.

Having visited ten grounds on the south coast and in the London area, he's now knocked off Ipswich and aims to arrive back in Newcastle in time for the Spurs home game at the end of the month.

Update:
James: come home

The Middlesbrough Gazette report that Boro U18s head coach James Marwood has left his post to become Newcastle's assistant coach at that level.

Now aged 34, James began his playing career at the Magpies, reaching the reserves before his eventual release in 2009. He then served various clubs including Gateshead before embarking on a coaching career.

It's yet to be announced who will lead the U18s this season, amid speculation that existing U18 assistant Chris Moore is set to step up into that role.

Newcastle fans had their first sight of new signing Colin Taylor following his arrival from Walsall - and he lived up to his Cannonball nickname with a well-struck treble.

Does anyone have a copy of the match programme/teamsheet for this game that they can scan or sell us please?

After 1-1 draws at home to West Ham and at Sheffield Wednesday, an own goal from John McNamee saw United leave Turf Moor empty-handed.

Our reserve side meanwhile beat their Burnley counterparts 2-1 at SJP, thanks to goals from Eric Ross and Keith Dyson.

And the N's junior side also picked up two points, winning 2-0 at Bradford Park Avenue with Longstaff and Artie Lumdson on target.

There were league debuts for both Mickey Burns and Glenn Keeley, Manager Joe Harvey commenting that, "there is so much talent in this club we have to do something." It was to be his final season in charge.

The Magpies motored to the Kingdom of Fife to appear in a testimonial for Norrie McCathy at East End Park.

Thanks to our well-informed readership, we can tell you that Norrie was the Pars' longest serving player and captained the team through the late '80s &  early '90s.

Team: Wright, Ranson (Bradshaw), Sweeney, Aitken, Kristensen, Scott, Simpson (Clarke), O'Brien, Quinn (Robinson), McGhee, Askew.

Famously (in Dunfermline) when the Pars topped the SPL in 1989, it was the front page headline on the Daily Record. Their second story was that the Berlin Wall had come down the same day...

League debut for Alan Shearer, who scored with a header, unfortunately and inexplicably disallowed.

At the other end Everton were awarded a ludicrous penalty when Duncan Ferguson pulled Steve Watson to the ground before dramatically falling over him. David Unsworth netted it while Gary Speed got the other.

2000 The saga of Duncan Ferguson's return to Goodison finally came to an end. United refused to compensate the Scot for unpaid bonuses and Bobby berated Ferguson's agent after the deal was done, following a week of on-off-on-off headlines.

Gary Speed and Olivier Bernard had Alan Shearer to thank for digging them out of their respective holes, his brace salvaging a point after his colleagues' blunders let in future Magpies Mark Viduka and Alan Smith.

Lee Bowyer debuted for Newcastle on his return to Elland Road, while David Batty appeared from the bench for the home side and was applauded by both sets of fans.

2005 In the wake of the furore following our Highbury season opener, the FA opted to reschedule their appointments in order to avoid sending buffoon Barry Knight to SJP.

Instead, Dermot Gallacher was selected to officiate Newcastle's home game against West Ham - where he would controversially dismiss Paul Konchesky for what looked like a decent challenge on Jermaine Jenas, whom Steve Bennett had sent off at Arsenal.

2008 Manchester United (a) 1-1 (1-1)

The Manc muppets aired their "Cheer up Kevin Keegan" nonsense but needn't have bothered as KK beamed his way out of Old Trafford with a deserved point.

But perhaps it could have been all three....

With the home side already missing some big names, they lost Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs in the second half and our best chance in decades to beat the Red Devils on their own patch suddenly presented itself.

Jonas Gutierrez had an outstanding debut, Fabricio Coloccini steadied the defence and with Danny Guthrie industrious in midfield, our lads steadily grew in confidence.

Obafemi Martins headed the visitors ahead from Guthrie's corner at the Stretford End, but within two minutes the Red Devils were level, Newcastle temporarily a man short as Steven Taylor received treatment.

Despite the optimism of this result, it was ill-fortune of that nature - plus countless incidents of self-harm - that contributed to our demotion the following May.

It proved to be third time lucky for United, following defeats by Fulham and Huddersfield Town.

Rafa Benitez saw three of his summer signings find the net, Isaac Hayden, Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle's brace helping United to their first Championship victory since 2010.

United made it two defeats out of two with a poor showing at Carrow Road as Teemu Pukki helped himself to his first City hat-trick.

Jonjo Shelvey hit a late consolation for United but it was way too little and way too late for Steve Bruce's side who were soundly beaten by the manager's former club.

There was a debut for Swedish defender Emil Krafth, at right back.
