2024/25:

Derby draw

Newcastle U21s  1  mackem U21s  1

An 88th minute equaliser prevented Newcastle U21s from making a winning start to the PL2 season at Whitley Park on Monday night.

Leading through Anthony Munda's first half strike, United were pegged back when Tymur Tutierov headed past Max Thompson shortly after arriving from the bench.

Both sides then had chances to claim all three points;  Magpies substitute Josh Donaldson denied by a point-blank save from goalkeeper Kelechi Chibueze.

A good crowd including Eddie Howe were on hand to see Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett both start - the latter returning to action for the first time since limping off in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford in November.

The Magpies went ahead in the 20th minute when a give and go between Anthony Munda and Alfie Harrison down the right flank ended with Munda expertly netting from a narrow angle.

That lead was almost doubled a minute later when Trevan Sanusi burst into the box but his shot was beaten away by Chibueze.

Sanusi was proving to be his side's chief forward threat,  making a succession of tricky runs down the left.

Newcastle's lead was kept intact at the interval thanks to Max Thompson; in particular one acrobatic save to deny Tommy Watson.

Trippier and Targett were replaced at half time as planned, with the visitors steadily gaining the initiative without managing to find the goal that began to look increasingly inevitable as the half continued.

Sanusi spent increasing amounts of time on the ground as the visitors tried to keep him in check by all means possible and he inevitably tired before going off.

Just as the U21s seemed set to emulate their senior counterparts on Saturday and stonewall their way to a 1-0 win, a left wing centre wasn't gathered by Max Thompson and Ukrainian striker Tutierov headed in.

Team:
M.Thompson, Trippier (Shahar 46), Targett (Charlton 46), J.Miley, Heffernan, C.Thompson, Al.Harrison (Donaldson 80), Munda, Parkinson, Turner-Cooke, Sanusi (Stanton 84).
Sub n/u:
Harris.

Booked: Sanusi, Munda.

SMB: Chibueze, Lavery (Tutierov 86), Johnson, Anderson, Crompton (Lenz 88), Triantis (Middlemas 33), Jones, Watson, Poveda (Kelly 46), Bennette, Semedo.
Sub n/u: Cameron.

Booked: Crompton, Johnson.

Referee: James Bancroft

Crowd: 839

This is the second season that PL2 has been played in an amended one division format, meaning that this was the only scheduled derby meeting at U21 level.

Last season saw the Magpies win the sole derby fixture 3-2 at the academy of plight. However, the red and whites finished seventh in the 26 team league; 15 points and 15 places above Newcastle.

PS: News of a permanent appointment of an U21 Head Coach to succeed Ben Dawson is awaited, with current Academy duo Neil Winskill and Jack Ross sharing the role at present.

Amid speculation regarding Newcastle's ongoing interest in Marc Guehi, the defender captained Crystal Palace in their Premier League season-opener at Brentford on Sunday.

The England international completed the entirety of a 1-2 defeat, picking up a booking in the process.

2024/25:
Boro bairns edge it

Newcastle U18s  0  Boro U18s  1

A 53rd minute strike from Frankie Coulson proved to be the difference between the two sides in Saturday's U18 Premier League season opener at Little Benton.

A sweetly-struck effort from the visiting captain found the top corner of Adam Harrison's goal and gave the Teessiders a lead that they preserved despite a late fight back from the home side.

15 year-old Debutant Mason Miley (brother of Lewis and Jamie) forced Oliver Lloyd into a routine stop on 78 minutes, Matthew Taylor shooting against the Boro goal frame soon after.

Miley again worked an opening but couldn't find the target before fellow substitute Matheos Ferreira broke forward from the right in the final minute of normal time - only to drive into the side netting.

Team: Harrison, Tika-Lemba (Johnson 76), Durrant (Wooster 89), Watts, Craggs, Cogdon (Miley 64), Brayson (Ferreira 64), Waddani, Neave, Taylor, Bloomer. Sub n/u: Jones.

Update:
Loan lads

For the first time in living memory, Newcastle currently have no players out on loan. That situation is expected to change however before the EFL transfer window closes towards the end of the month.

Latest:

LNER strikes called

From BBC, Friday:

Train drivers at London North Eastern Railway (LNER) are set to strike every weekend in September, October and two in November, union bosses have announced.

Aslef, which represents train drivers, said the walkouts at LNER were due to a breakdown in industrial relations and agreements.

The fresh strike action is separate from an ongoing pay dispute with all train companies, which edged closer to being resolved in England this week after a new pay offer.

LNER, which operates services on the East Coast Mainline between London and Edinburgh and is run by the government, said it was "surprised and disappointed" by the announcement following recent talks.

Aslef said its member drivers at LNER would walk out every Saturday between 31 August and 9 November and on every Sunday from 1 September to 10 November.

The fresh walkouts, which total 22 days, are separate to the long-running row over train driver wages at 16 train companies, which looks set to be resolved in England following a new pay offer made this week.

Run for home

Magpies fan Matthew Smith is currently running an 800+ mile route between Bournemouth and Newcastle, taking in all 20 Premier League grounds.

He's the founder of If U Care Share, a charity based in Chester-le-Street that carries out suicide prevention workshops and associated work.

Matthew has taken on this challenge in an attempt to bridge a funding gap affected his charity that he estimates at £135,000.

Having visited ten grounds on the south coast and in the London area, he's now knocked off Ipswich and aims to arrive back in Newcastle in time for the Spurs home game at the end of the month.

The 1,350 away places at the Vitality Stadium are sold out, with safe standing installed in rows J to R since our last visit. Seating sections are located in rows A to I.

Team:
Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman, Lewis Miley and
Callum Wilson remain sidelined, while Fabian Schar joins Sandro Tonali on the suspended list.

There's an early return to his former club for Lloyd Kelly, who played for Bournemouth in their last competitive home game - a 1-2 defeat by Brentford back in May.

AFCB: The Cherries kicked off with a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest on Saturday and are unbeaten at home in their opening home game in all competitions since the 2017/18 season.

Bournemouth will be without Dominic Solanke after his sale to Spurs - the striker netted both goals in the corresponding fixture last season.

His replacement Evanilson is expected to make his debut following a club record £40m transfer from Porto. The Brazilian made his senior international debut last June in the same side as Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes.

Stats:

Following their opening day home win over Southampton, Newcastle will attempt to make it six points from their first two games for the first time since 1997/98.

That season saw Kenny Dalglish's side follow up a 2-1 home victory over Sheffield Wednesday in the PL with a 1-0 success against Aston Villa at SJP.

The Magpies haven't begun a season with back-to-back home and away wins since 1995/96; 3-0 at home to Coventry City then 3-1 away at Bolton Wanderers.

Scoring goals has also been an issue in Newcastle's first away league game of the season; failing to find the net in 10 of the last 12 opening fixtures away from SJP (Premier League and Championship).

2024/25:
Nottingham Forest (a)

United enter the Carabao Cup in the Second Round on Wednesday week, August 28th at fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest - the third time in just eight seasons that we've met them in this competition.

The tie is an 8pm kick-off televised live in the UK by Sky Sports and falls between two Sunday PL games: a trip to Bournemouth and the visit of Spurs to SJP.

Forest meanwhile are at Southampton the Saturday before and host Wolves the following Saturday.

A result must be achieved on the night - if the score is tied after 90 minutes a penalty shootout will ensue.

Following Newcastle's 3-2 win there in February and the upcoming league visit in November, this tie means that we're set to visit the City Ground three times in 2024.

The winners of the tie will take their place in the Third Round draw (date tbc) with those ties split over two midweeks:  w/c's Mon 16.09.2024 & 23.09.2024.

Team: The scheduling of this tie on Wednesday means that Sandro Tonali will be available for selection, after his ten month ban ends at Midnight on Tuesday.

Fabian Schar will serve the second game of his three game suspension for a red card against Southampton.

NFFC:
Nuno Espirito Santo can call upon SJP old boys Elliot Anderson and Chris Wood for this tie but Danilo will be sidelined with a serious ankle injury.

On This Day in History
20th August

Born Or Died:

1925 John McNichol born Kilmarnock, Scotland (1946-48)

A motor mechanic who served in the Fleet Air Arm during World War II, United spotted inside forward Johnny playing for Hurlford Juniors in his native Ayrshire (he'd also guested for Inverness Clachnacuddin while posted to Invergordon).

Moving to Gallowgate in August 1946 after two successful trial games, McNichol marked his reserve debut with a goal in a 4-1 home victory over Stoke City later that month.

Part of the side that won the Central League title in 1948, he failed to graduate to the seniors and supplementing his income by maintaining cars for a local undertaker.

A contractual dispute ahead of the 1948/49 season resulted in Johnny's exit, Brighton & Hove Albion equaling their club record transfer fee of £5,000 for his services.

Making a belated senior debut aged 23, he became a popular figure at the Goldstone Ground but failed to help the Seagulls gain promotion to the second tier.

Turning down an offer from Manchester City, he was tempted by Chelsea for a £12,000 fee during 1952 - but continued to live in Hove and claimed to make more money from his newsagents than at Stamford Bridge!

Playing alongside fellow former Magpie Roy Bentley in the side that won the First Division Championship in 1955, Johnny lost his place to a certain Jimmy Greaves and moved on Crystal Palace in 1958.

Becoming club captain at Selhurst Park and converting to full back, he remained there until 1963 when made player-manager of Southern League Tunbridge Wells Rangers.

Remaining on the South Coast, McNichol worked in the commercial departments of both Palace and Brighton. His passing was recorded in March 2007, aged 81.

1999 Joe Willock born London (2021,2021-present)

United's only senior arrival of the January 2021 transfer window was an on-loan Arsenal midfielder who had faced the Magpies for his parent club just weeks earlier in the FA Cup.

The England U21 international had an instant impact on Tyneside, finding the net after just 16 minutes of his first appearance, at home to Southampton - a feat that made him our fastest-scoring Premier League debutant.

A run of seven vital goals in seven games helped secure our Premier League status but Willock returned to Arsenal that summer and seemed set to stay there.

However, a permanent deal was eventually reached for a fee in excess of £25m, but only after United had unsuccessfully attempted to negotiate a further loan deal.

Joe completed his move 48 hours before the season-opener at home to West Ham but didn't feature as The Magpies lost 2-4.

He was in attendance and warmly received when paraded on the pitch before kick-off.

Almost inevitably, Willock failed to recapture the form he had shown on loan, but the arrival of Eddie Howe benefited him and he found the net at West Ham and Brentford came in successive games.

He added 43 appearances and three more goals in the 2022/23 season, but injury sidelined him for much of the following season - the highlight of which was a fine strike at Old Trafford in the League Cup.

His fight for full fitness continues.

With Arsenal's Academy from the age of four, he followed elder brothers Matty and Chris through the ranks, but was the only one to make a senior bow - against Doncaster Rovers in the League Cup in September 2017.

Blooded in the Premier League at SJP in April 2018 on a day when the Gunners lost 1-2, Joe signed an extended deal at the Emirates the following year, but made the majority of his Arsenal appearances as a substitute.

Capped at U16, U19 and U20 levels by England, Willock marked his debut for the U21s with a goal against Portugal in 2019.

A week before the new season began, all 88 clubs participated in friendlies marking the 50th anniversary of the Football League's founding in 1888.

The League stated that "fixtures were organised without regard to league status, with a view to making the matches as attractive as possible. Neighbouring teams, where it is feasible, have been set to meet each other."

The aim was to raise money to establish of a "Football League Jubilee Trust Fund."

One of the highest crowds in the country was at Gallowgate, the presence of Hughie Gallacher in the visiting line-up an evident draw.

Fellow SJP old boy Albert McInroy also appeared.

Newcastle recorded an opening day success but the Blades had the upper hand for the opening quarter before Reg Davies scored.

Injury left the hosts unable to select regular full backs Ron Batty and Bobby Cowell and while the former was soon back, Cowell was unable to fully recover and ultimately forced into retirement.

Meanwhile the reserves were routed 2-6 by Wolves at Molineux.

The opening home game of the season gave supporters a chance to watch football through a security fence for the first time, this measure having been erected in the summer.

Chris Waddle's pair were both from close-in - a header and a toe-poke on the line - while there was much talk about the absent Imre Varadi, declared surplus to requirements and allowed to speak to Sheffield Wednesday but unwilling to leave Gallowgate.

Newcastle visited the International Stadium to provide opposition in a joint Testimonial match for Bob Topping and former Magpie favourite Terry Hibbitt.

Terry's brother Kenny played and scored for the hosts, with Bob Moncur and Malcolm Macdonald also appearing for the Tynesiders. Jimmy Montgomery was between the posts for the hosts.

United midfielder Billy Askew appeared before magistrates, charged with a public order offence after police had been called to a disturbance in Chester-le-Street town centre. He was fined.

1994 16 year old Paul Brayson scored eight time, as Newcastle Juniors overcame their Hartlepool counterparts 10-1 at Durham University. 'Pools had taken the lead!

1997 After a one-season absence, Newcastle returned to the Pontins Reserve league, albeit in the Third Division. Their opening fixture was an uninspiring 0-0 stalemate against Hull City at Boothferry Park.

1997 International call-ups saw Magpies new boys Jon Dahl Tomasson in World Cup Qualifying action for Denmark (lost 0-3 in Sarajevo to Bosnia-Herzegovina), and Shay Given for Ireland (0-0 at home to Lithuania).

18 year-old Bjarni Gudjonsson stole the show however, netting his first senior goal on his second appearance for Iceland - as they won against Liechenstein.

2001 United's U19s recorded a 9-1 friendly win at Ponteland. Michael Chopra and Richard Offiong both hit hat-tricks, with Joe Kendrick and Chris Moore also scoring and the other goal coming from a certain Peter Beardsley.

2002 The Reserves hosted Boro at Gateshead International Stadium and took a 2-1 lead after Joseph Job put the visitors ahead.

Christian Bassedas equalised before Shola Ameobi put us in front only for Job to get his second in the last minute to make it 2-2.

2003 A brace from striker Calvin Zola helped us to a fine 4-2 win against Everton Reserves at Southport's Haig Avenue.

Wayne Rooney equalised Zola's first but a second for Zola restored United's lead and Michael Chopra then raced into the box and slotted home to make it 3-1.

But back came the Toffees and Rooney again converted a fantastic effort, before Phil Cave topped a fine night for United with an even more spectacular 35 yarder.

Having returned from Highbury pointless but with some positives taken from a battling display, Newcastle once again revealed themselves to be incapable of playing offensively on their own ground.

Despite finishing a man short, Alan Pardew's Hammers side were rarely troubled by the home side, for whom midfielder Lee Clark made a second senior debut.

2006 News reports claimed that Obafemi Martins was on Tyneside for transfer talks, with Italian sources suggesting that a deal between with Inter Milan had been struck, valuing the striker at €16m (£10.9m).

Ryan Taylor rifled home a stunning free-kick (over the wall) to give United three fantastic points - despite the best efforts of "England's" Howard Webb.

The much-praised whistler missed a blatant handball by Sebastian Larsson from an early Joey Barton header that should have been punished with a penalty and a red card.

Tempers spilled over at times and there were players from both sides lucky to stay on the pitch but mackem pair Lee Cattermole and Phil Bardsley could have ended up in jail with some of their assaults.

Webb finally lost patience with the latter late on and issued a second yellow card to round off another memorable trip to the dark place.
