Hat compo

Recently added to the range of Toon-themed headwear from Football Bobbles is a new version of their Lee bobble hat, referencing a certain former midfielder.

Styled on United's distinctive 1997/98 season change kit, the hats are made in the UK - one size fits most.

These are on sale now here and Christmas delivery in the UK is available via standard shipping (Royal Mail 48 tracked) until Friday week, December 20th

We have a hat up for grabs in a free competition and to be in with a chance of winning, email your answer to this question to [email protected] by 5pm GMT on Thursday December 19th, subject line of Hat.

Synonymous with the number 7 during his time as a Magpie, a disagreement with which Manager saw Rob Lee switch to wearing number 37 for one season?

No age limit, open to anyone on the planet but delivery can only be made to a UK address. One entry each please. In the event of a tie, one winner will be randomly drawn from all correct entries received.

Update:
Yet more Wilson woe

The Mail report that Callum Wilson has succumbed to injury yet again and is set to be absent for two months with what they describe as a hamstring problem.

Missing the opening 14 league and cup games of the season, Newcastle's number 9 returned to action from the bench during the Premier League home defeat at the hands of West Ham late last month.

That was the first of four substitute appearances totalling just 57 minutes for Wilson, who is 33 in February and is out of contract next summer.

2025/26:
Parkhead claim made

Various media outlets reported on Wednesday that Newcastle are lined up as pre-season opposition for current Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic.

The Mail claim that the Magpies will be in friendly action at Parkhead on Saturday July 19th, four weeks before the 2025/26 Premier League season commences.

United's most recent visit to Glasgow saw them defeat city rivals Rangers 2-1 at Ibrox during July 2023.

The two sides have met on six occasions in the Premier League era, three on Tyneside and three in Scotland:

2007/08 won 4-1 (h) Martins, Luque 2, Milner
2005/06
won 3-2 (h) Luque, og, Shearer
2004/05 lost 1-2 (a) Bellamy
1999/00 lost 0-2 (a)
1998/99 lost 1-3 (h) Beardsley
1995/96 drew 1-1 (a) Ferdinand

PL TV: one change

The Premier League have confirmed one alteration to Newcastle's fixtures staged in February as follows:

Sat 01.02.2025 Fulham (h) 3pm no TV
Sat 15.02.2025 Manchester City (a) 3pm no TV
Sun 23.02.2025 Nottingham Forest (h) KO tbc Sky

(There's no mention as yet of the midweek games during the last week of February, when Newcastle will face Liverpool at Anfield, supposedly on Wed 26th).

PS: To those who asked when the last non-televised meeting between Newcastle and Manchester City took place, it was at Gallowgate in April 2016

Since then, all 15 PL meetings plus a trio of cup ties were transmitted live in the UK, making a total of 18

(For completeness, the last Saturday 3pm fixture against City was staged at the Etihad in October 2015).

Unlikely lads
:
Derry boy

Former Newcastle midfielder Shane Ferguson is back in football after signing for his hometown club, League of Ireland Premier Division side Derry City.

Now 33, Fergie was a free agent after his contract at Rotherham United ended in the summer, having also appeared for Millwall since leaving Gallowgate in 2016.

PS: Fellow ex-Magpie Tom Allan made a scoring debut for his latest club South Shields on Tuesday, as they beat Rushall Olympic 7-0 in National League North.

The 25 year-old has moved from Gateshead for the rest of the season following the expiration of his loan at Spennymoor Town, during which he scored the winning goal to knock the Mariners out of the FA Trophy.

Allan joins a growing SJP old boy contingent in Elliott Dickman's squad that includes Mackenzie Heaney, Dan Ward, Kyle Crossley and Lucas De Bolle.

FAC:

Bromley (h) date set

Newcastle's FA Cup Third Round tie against Bromley at St. James' Park will go ahead on Sunday January 12th with a 3pm kick-off.

The only live UK coverage will be via BBC iPlayer, with Arsenal versus Manchester United on BBC1 at 3pm

Ticket sale information is awaited, but those on the home ticket scheme for FA Cup ties will pay £30 or £35 depending on their seating area. That money will reportedly be collected on Thursday (12th).

The League Two visitors have taken 4,900 tickets.

2024/25:
Leicester City (h)

Winless in their last four games, Newcastle are back in Premier League action on Saturday when the Foxes visit SJP for a non-televised 3pm kick-off.

Team: Sven Botman is training but won't be considered for selection yet. Emil Krafth and Jamaal Lascelles remain out and news on Joe Willock is awaited.

Joelinton, Fabian Schar and Sandro Tonali are all now one booking away from serving one game bans.

Boubakary Soumare is suspended, while Wilfred Ndidi and Harry Winks are both doubtful.

The Foxes recovered from a 0-2 deficit to draw 2-2 at home to Brighton on Sunday, following up a 3-0 victory over West Ham at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday - both games under new boss Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Away from home City have conceded 18 goals - the joint leakiest defence in the PL on the road with Wolves.

Referee:
Tom Bramall - a first Newcastle game this season for the Manchester-based official. He took charge of three in 2023/24; the 2-0 home win over Burnley, 4-4 home draw with Luton Town and 0-2 reverse at Crystal Palace.

Newcastle's Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against the Bees is on Wednesday at Gallowgate, with a 7.45pm kick-off.

The visitors took an initial allocation of 1,200.

FAYC:
Albion eliminated

Newcastle U18s  2  Brighton U18s  1

A fine strike from Michael Mills put Newcastle U18s into the Fourth Round of this season's FA Youth Cup at the expense of Brighton on Monday night.

A whirlwind start from the black and whites at a chilly Whitley Park saw Sean Neave head against the Albion crossbar and the opening goal arrived soon after.

Trevan Sanusi then burst down the United right after nine minutes and centred for Joe Brayson to tuck his shot in at the near post - emulating his dad Paul, who netted for United in this competition back in 1995.

Good skill from Mills saw him work a shooting chance that Alfie Mansell was equal to on 22 minutes; Luke Craggs grazing the goal frame following a corner soon after.

The home side's dominance was rewarded with a second goal four minutes before the break when Neave led a breakaway and released Mills on halfway, the 15 year-old advancing before confidently firing home.

However, the visitors pulled one back from the spot on half-time after Callum Mackley was upended by Aidan Harris and Harry Howell sent Harris the wrong way.

A tighter second period saw Brighton enjoy more of the ball but fail to turn their pressure into chances that seriously threatened Aidan Harris in the home goal.

Newcastle's best chance of the half came shortly past the hour when another rapid counter-attack put Neave through on goal, only to be denied by Mansell.

Five minutes of added time followed during which Chris Moore's side kept Albion out to reach the Fourth Round for a fifth successive season.

Team: Harris, Shahar, Durrant (Alabi 63), Watts, Craggs, Finneran, Sanusi, Munda, Neave, Brayson (Bryant 63), Mills (Ferreira 69).
Subs n/u:
Johnson, Harrison, Taylor, Cogdon.

Crowd: 252.

This was the third time that these two sides have met in this competition; Newcastle maintaining their 100% win record following a penalty shootout success at SJP in 2006 and a memorable 5-0 away victory in 2017.

Update:
Come in number 4

The Athletic's Chris Waugh claims that Sven Botman is on target to make a playing return for Newcastle U21s against Chelsea at Whitley Park on Monday night.

The Dutch defender hasn't kicked a ball in anger since sustaining an ACL injury during United's FA Cup Sixth Round defeat at Manchester City back in March.

Update:
Devils dump Dan

Manchester United Sporting Director Dan Ashworth has left his post, barely five months after agreement was reached releasing him from his contract at Gallowgate.

The 53 year-old announced his intention to join the Old Trafford club in February 2024 and was cleared to take up the role in July following a period of gardening leave.

The Times report that the compensation agreement reached between the clubs at that point was £5m - a somewhat larger amount than claimed at the time.

Born Or Died:

1880 James "Dun" Hay born, Beith, Scotland.(1911-19)

Half back Jimmy began his career with Ayr United, joining Newcastle from Celtic after a contractual disagreement - leaving them after six successive Championship victories.

Having captained the Hoops and Scotland, Hay was given the post at Gallowgate and remained at the club until football was suspended due to WW1 in 1915.

Seeing action in France during the conflict, Hay returned to Ayr United and later served Clydebank both as a player and manager.

However the incident that he's remembered for happened two years after his accepting the job of Ayr United manager in 1924.

Claiming that one of his own directors had attempted to bribe a match referee as the club fought relegation, he refused to retract the accusation and was suspended sine die by the SFA.

That decision was over-turned a year later but Hay never held any significant post in the game after that. He died in 1940.

1897 Norman Smith born, Newburn.
(1938-62)

Appearing for both Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town in his playing career, Stan Seymour handed Norman the post of club trainer at Gallowgate in 1939.

A familiar part of the Magpies staff for almost quarter of a century, Smith was granted a testimonial match in 1959 - a rare honour for a 'backroom boy'.

Working for both Duggie Livingstone and Charlie Mitten, Norman took over as team manager following the departure of the latter in the wake of our relegation in 1961.

However the move wasn't a success and he left the club after handing over the reins to Joe Harvey in 1962, although he was often to be seen in the company of his successor.
Norman died suddenly in 1978.

1952 Irving Nattrass born, Fishburn, Durham. (1970-79)

Another graduate from Newcastle's junior side, Irving debuted at right back in a 3-1 victory over Derby County at SJP in March 1971, replacing an injured John Craggs.

Appearing in central midfield and occasionally as a centre half, Nattrass then first inherited the right back slot from David Craig during the 1973/74 season.

Injury saw Nattrass miss United's FA Cup Final defeat in 1974 while he appeared in the League Cup Final reverse two seasons later despite struggling with a knee injury.

Publicly urging United to appoint coach Richard Dinnis as successor to manager Gordon Lee, Irving's association with that "player power" episode saw him come into conflict with Bill McGarry and he joined Middlesbrough for a fee of £375K in August 1979 (Spurs also registering an interest due to their manager Keith Burkinshaw having previously coached Nattrass at United).

Going on to play over 200 games for Boro, a knee injury would eventually force him into retirement at the age of 33.

Believed by some to have been wrongly overlooked for full international honours, Irving did play once for England U23s (and sat on the bench for three other games), but rejected an end of season call-up for a "B" team tour of Australia, which cost him.

While still a Newcastle player in 1978, Irving established "The Factory Store" clothing shop in Chester-le-Street and later opened six similar outlets in the region.

However, the economic downturn forced him to file for bankruptcy in 2012.

1966 Lee Payne born, Luton.
(1988-89)

Beginning his career with Hitchin Town, winger Lee then played in the Conference with Barry Fry's Barnet, before joining Leicester City on a trial basis and appearing against Newcastle in a reserve game.

Failing to reach agreement with the Foxes, United nipped in and signed Payne for £125K shortly before Willie McFaul was shown the door at Gallowgate.

Lee's senior debut then came against the smoggies at SJP in October 1988, by which time team selection was in the hands of caretaker boss Colin Suggett.

The arrival of Jim Smith at Gallowgate proved to be the end of Payne's time in toon and he was sold to Reading for £60K, later playing in Holland for Veendam alongside fellow former Magpie Rob McDonald.

A knee injury would curtail his career during a second spell at Veendam, returning there following a three season spell at Emmen and a brief spell with non-league Gateshead.

A born-again Christian, Payne began working as a scout for Harry Redknapp during his days as West Ham boss and later became a player's agent.

1974 Nolberto Solano born, Lima, Peru.
(1998-2004 & 2005-07)

Kenny Dalglish's final signing was the £2.5m purchase of this former Sporting Cristal and Universitario midfielder from Boca Juniors.

Over 9,000 fans saw him appear and score for United's reserve side in a 5-1 win over Stockport at SJP, just days before his first team debut in a 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

That proved to be Kenny's last game in charge, but Nobby ending his first full season on Tyneside with an FA Cup runner’s-up medal under the guidance of Ruud Gullit.

The following season then saw him net the first goal of Bobby Robson’s managerial reign, setting United on the road to victory in Sofia. Later disagreements with Sir Bobby Robson over his international career caused Solano to drop down the pecking order - and be frequently substituted when recalled.

January 2004 saw him move on to Aston Villa in a £1.5m deal and Nobby would play in the 2-4 loss at Villa the following August, his three assists in that game hastening the departure of Robson from SJP.

A year later and he was back at Gallowgate for the same £1.5m fee, James Milner going the other way on a season-long loan.

The Geordie Latino then played on for a further two seasons at United before a move to West Ham was negotiated for family reasons - his final appearance for Newcastle coming in a League Cup tie at home to Barnsley in August 2007.

Subsequently signing for Greek side AE Larisa and then rejoining Universitario, Nobby was sighted in the UK once more in late 2009.

A spell training with Colchester United failed to bring a contract offer, as did a similar stint at Sheffield United. And the sight of Solano training with Newcastle led to speculation of another return to black and white.

That proved to be only a favour to him while he was back in the area and Nobby joined Nigel Pearson's Leicester City in January 2010 - making his Foxes debut against Newcastle.

He then followed Pearson to the KC Stadium that summer and blew his trumpet for the Tigers before a surprise move back to the North East in May 2011 joining another former coach, Mick Wadsworth, at Hartlepool.

Following Wadsworth's dismissal, Solano left Hartlepool and was named as a part-time coach at Newcastle Benfield - although his involvement was minimal.

However, by the Summer he had returned to his native Peru and in June 2012, was confirmed as manager of Peruvian Primera Division club, Universitario de Deportes.

That proved to be short-lived association and his departure was reported late in 2012, Solano subsequently returning to the UK and being linked with a number of managerial posts in the Football League.

By 2014 he was coaching Canadian side Internacional de Toronto but still eyeing a return to England.

Following claims in January 2015 that he'd taken the post of coach for Thailand side Hua Hin City, Solano joined the Peruvian national team staff in May of that year.

Filling various roles including U23 coach, Nobby moved on in 2022 and had a brief unproductive spell managing Swedish outfit AFC Eskilstuna during 2023.

He returned to the North East and was appointed manager of Blyth Spartans in May 2024, however by the end of August he had left after a winless start to the season.

1975 Craig Moore born, Canterbury, Australia. (2005-07)

Australian international defender who moved to SJP on a free transfer from Bundesliga side Borussia Munchengladbach, having previously appeared for Glasgow Rangers and Crystal Palace.

Moore made a scoring debut in a pre-season home fixture against Yeading, but a first competitive runout didn't arrive until March 2006, when he appeared as a substitute in the FA Cup Quarter Final loss at Chelsea.

All told, Moore made 31 appearances (29 starts) and survived the Souness era to appear in Glenn Roeder's squads.

However, the move was never a success and injury issues reduced his effectiveness - while also maximising his time on the treatment table, which allowed him plenty scope to peruse the Racing Post and frequent turf accountants on Tyneside.

Moore returned to his native land and join the Queensland Roar, later renamed Brisbane Roar. 2008 then saw him undergo successful treatment for testicular cancer.

A brief spell at Greek side AO Kavala followed in early 2010, before Moore appeared for his country at the World Cup Finals in South Africa that summer.

Later landing a job on the Australian national team staff, 2015 brought a return to Brisbane Roar in a coaching capacity.

1986 Liam Atkin born, Ashington.
(2002-07)

Full back who came through United's youth setup and debuted for the reserve side in a 1-1 draw at Bradford City in April 2003.

However, several injury setback, a loss of form and stints playing in midfield and even as a makeshift striker would all hinder Liam's  development at the club.

His only two first team outings both came in friendlies; a mid-season visit to Malaga in 2005 and a testimonial match at Norwich in July 2006. Six months after that outing, a settlement on his contract was reached and Liam joined Carlisle United.

However, he failed to make a competitive appearance for the Cumbrians and joined Queen of the South on trial.

Atkin continued his career with Newcastle Blue Star, Blyth Spartans, Gateshead, Ashington, Airdrie (trial), Cheltenham Town (trial) West Allotment Celtic, Ashington, Blyth Spartans, Ashington, Celtic Nation, Shildon, Ashington, Jarrow Roofing and Newcastle University.

Holding a UEFA B coaching qualification, he returned to United in a position with the club's Foundation.

2022 A club announcement declared:

Newcastle United's Carabao Cup fourth round tie with Bournemouth has been brought forward by 24 hours due to planned NHS strike action on Wednesday, 21st December.

United had been set to face the Cherries at St. James' Park a week on Wednesday but due to the planned action - which affects North East Ambulance Service, the club's long-standing provider of ambulances, paramedics and match command - the game will now be played a day earlier on Tuesday, 20th December with kick-off set for 7:45pm.

The planned strike action has significant safety implications on the club's matchday medical provisions.
