Team:
Fabian Schar serves a one match suspension after collecting his fifth PL booking of the season at Old Trafford on Monday.

Nick Pope, Callum Wilson, Jamaal Lascelles and Emil Krafth remain unavailable but Sven Botman is poised to return to the squad for the first time since March 2024.

THFC:
Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended while Richarlison, Guglielmo Vicario, Wilson Odobert, Ben Davies, Destiny Udogie and Micky van de Ven are all sidelined.

Cristian Romero is a doubt.

Ange Postecoglu's side have won four, drawn two and lost the other four of their ten PL home games so far this season.

They have failed to win any of their last five in that competition on home ground, scoring ten times but conceding 15 goals during those five fixtures.

Former Magpie Fraser Forster has kept goal for the last 10 games in all competitions. His most recent appearance against Newcastle came for Spurs as they were walloped 5-1 at Gallowgate in April 2023.

Premier League
:
Cunha ban confirmed

The punishment handed out Matheus Cunha for a post-match incident involving a member of the Ipswich Town coaching staff has been announced, with the Wolves forward suspended for two games.

Bizarrely allowed to play on for three games after the offence that prompted the FA charge took place - and scoring twice during that time - the Brazilian misses the Premier League home meeting with Nottingham Forest and FA Cup Third Round tie against Bristol City.

That leaves him nicely rested for a fortnight, before becoming available for his side's PL game away to Newcastle on January 15th.

Update:
Michael Newberry RIP

Confirmartion of the death of former Magpie reserve defender Michael Newberry came on Monday - what would have been his 27th birthday.

Michael played at U18 and U21 level between 2013 and 2018, winning youth international caps for Northern Ireland and lifting the 2016 Sport Newcastle Wor Jackie Award for most promising Magpie Academy graduate.

Leaving Gallowgate in 2018 he spent three years with Icelandic second tier side UMF Vikingur Olafsvik before returning to his native Northern Ireland with Linfield.

June 2024 then saw him make a switch to fellow Belfast-based club Cliftonville
.

On This Day in History
1st January

Born Or Died:

1889 Angus Douglas born, Lochmaben, Scotland. (1913-18)

Outside right who left his hometown club in 1907 to join Chelsea, winning one full cap for Scotland in March 1911.

Moving to SJP at a cost of £1,100 Douglas made his debut in a 0-1 defeat at Burnley in November 1913 and was a regular starter until the end of the 1914/15 season.

Serving in the armed forces during the Great War, Angus was one of many victims of the influenza pandemic of 1918, passing away just days before his 30th birthday.

1911 Alfred Dunmore born, South Shields (1928-30)

Right winger spotted playing for Simonside and Durham Boys by Newcastle, who initially took him on apprentice terms before agreeing a professional contract.

Failing to break into the first team at SJP, Fred signed for Derby County in April 1930, although there was some dispute over his availability - United initially denying that he'd left the club.

However Dunmore was never selected for first team duty, joining Southampton in 1932.

A solitary first team outing followed that year but he wasn't retained by the Saints and was reportedly then signed by Mansfield Town.

Returning to the North East he featured for Blyth Spartans and Horden CW.

Fred's death was reported in 1991.

1985 Kris Gate born, Newcastle.
(2000-07)

Midfielder/defender who began his career at Walker Central before joining Newcastle juniors, helping the U17s to win the Premier Academy League title in 2002.

Making his reserve team bow at left back in a Senior Cup tie against Blyth Spartans in April 2003, Kris signed his first professional contract in March of the following year.

Featuring in the senior team friendly defeat away to Malaga during September 2005, a brief trial at Grimsby Town was then followed by a place on the bench for our 4-2 Premier League success at West Ham that December.

Captaining the reserves but never called into senior action, Gate was released by United towards the end of the 2006/07 season.

Turning up on trial at Darlington, St.Mirren and Bradford City, Gate began the season with Newcastle Blue Star - featuring against a Magpies XI at Kingston Park.

However hamstring trouble forced him off and within weeks he signed for Gateshead, playing over 200 times for the Tynesiders before leaving in 2012.

Signing for Harrogate Town and Celtic Nation but never playing for either, 2013 found Gate relocated to Australia following a stint with Bedlington Terriers.

Initially with Perth Soccer Club, he later played for Floreat Athena and Balcatta.

1995 Adam Campbell born, North Shields.
(2000-15)

Another product of the Wallsend Boys Club, striker Adam first appeared for Newcastle's junior side at the age of just seven and debuted for the U18s when aged just 15.

2010 saw Campbell's profile raised following United's participation in the U16 Nike Cup when voted the Most Valuable Player.

February 2011 proved to be another high point for the youngster, marking only his second reserve team appearance with a goal in a 3-4 reverse away to Bolton.

And just days later, Adam got off the mark for the U18s at Boro, before making his international debut for England U16s against Northern Ireland in a Victory Shield game at Ballymena.

Campbell then rounded off a fine year by registering his first strike at Gallowgate during an FA Youth Cup win against Darlington in December 2011.

2012 brought first team action, with a cameo appearance in the pre-season loss at Cardiff followed by an outing from the bench away to Atromitos in the Europa League.

That was enough to see him enter the club's record books as their youngest ever European participant at 17 years and 236 days - superseding Andy Carroll.

Starting the reserve season in blistering form with a hat trick against Spurs, a leg injury then halted Adam's progress.

The following season saw Adam loaned for a month to Carlisle United, but just a single substitute appearance followed and he returned to SJP after a fortnight.

A second temporary posting then followed with SPFL side St.Mirren in January 2014 - getting off to a flying start with a debut goal at Kilmarnock and a second in only his fourth appearance, away to Hibernian.

However, a loss of form saw Adam reduced to occasional appearances off the bench and he failed to add to his scoring tally before heading back to SJP in May 2014.

The next season saw loan spells at League One Fleetwood Town, League Two Hartlepool United and Conference side Gateshead before Adam was released by Newcastle.

Picked up by Notts County, he hit 12 goals in 85 games over the next two seasons before signing a two year deal with Morecambe after becoming a free agent.

Scoring just once for The Shrimps in 31 games Adam, joined Carlisle United on loan in August 2018 and made 17 appearances for the Cumbrians without netting.

Released by Morecambe in May 2019, he moved on to National League North side Darlington but rejoined Gateshead in May 2021.

Adam then signed for League Two side Crawley Town in August 2023 before completing a free transfer switch to National League Hartlepool United the following July.

Newcastle's Jock Peddie shot wide of the target from the penalty spot at 0-1, amid what was called "a steamy haze" hanging over a pitch that had been heavily sanded.

Visibility remained poor and the occupants of the press box relied on information relayed to them via supporters.

The fog grew ever thicker and the match was abandoned by Sheffield-based referee Fox with around 15 minutes remaining.

In the replayed match at SJP the following March, Peddie scored the only goal. Glossop would be relegated that season.

Paul Scholes levelled before half time and when the same player struck again less than thirty seconds into the second half, our festive misery looked like extending to a third successive loss.

That was until David Edgar intervened though.

The Canadian-born 19 year-old was making only the second senior start of his career, the son of former 'keeper Eddie Edgar (in the crowd) marking his home bow with a low deflected shot from distance that nestled in the corner of the Gallowgate net.

2009 After JFK's "Shay Stays" comments, Given's agent John Kennedy gave a truer picture: Shay is very despondent following the very poor performance of the team against Liverpool last weekend. It was the lowest point of his football career and a performance that he would not wish to be repeated.

"When he signed a new five-year contract in 2006 it was on the basis that the club would challenge for major honours, but on the present evidence all that he can see ahead, with the turmoil on and off the pitch, is a battle for survival.

"Having served the club loyally for over eleven years, Shay feels compelled to consider his position in the light of the interest being expressed in him by Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham."

Jacob Murphy's charging run upfield ended with a pass that Ayoze Perez buried in Stoke's net to secure three huge points in the cold, driving rain.

Victory in the Potteries pushed the Magpies up three places to 16th and would trigger the sacking of City boss Mark Hughes barely a week later. Shame.

United's useless Yuletide continued with a third defeat in seven days
, as the Foxes won a fourth successive game at SJP.

As they had at Leicester, Steve Bruce's side played most of the second half with ten men but this time it was injury, not a red card, that left them a man short.

Having used all three substitutes by the 46th minute, Fabian Schar then pulled up and was unable to continue.

Florian Lejeune had earlier gifted goals to ex-Mag Ayoze Perez and James Maddison before
Hamza Choudhury (who assaulted Matt Ritchie in previous meeting) added insult to injuries by netting late on.
