New deals for duo
Newcastle confirmed on Thursday that two players have agreed new
contracts to extend their stay at SJP.
Defender Emil Krafth has signed a new 12 month deal while goalkeeper Martin
Dubravka put pen to paper on an extension of undisclosed duration.
Meanwhile, contract talks with defender Fabian Schar are reportedly
continuing.
That leaves Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis and Callum Wilson in the final
months of their SJP deals, along with goalkeeping pair John Ruddy and Mark
Gillespie.
The Athletic have written in recent days that a new contract offer
for Wilson is unlikely but that is tbc.
Update:
Old
boy acquitted
The trial of former Spanish
Football Federation supremo Luis Rubiales for sexual assault concluded on
Thursday with a guilty verdict and a fine but no prison term.
The charge followed the televised kiss between Rubiales and Spanish
international Jenni Hermoso after full time in the 2023 Women's World Cup
Final against England.
Rubiales was acquitted of a further charge of coercion related to events
that followed the incident, along with three other officials accused of the
same offence.
One of that trio was ex-Magpie Albert Luque - who at the time was Sporting
Director of the Spanish men's team and originally called as a witness
before further investigations resulted in the charge.

Miguel and Taiwo Awoniyi are doubts.
A trio of ex-Magpies could face their old team, Elliot Anderson and

following maximum returns against Spurs, Wolves and Southampton.

Following last week's 1-5 home loss to
Blackburn Rovers, Saturday saw Newcastle U18s face a Manchester United side
who themselves won 5-1 on Tyneside in September.
A creditable defensive performance yielded a point at
Carrington however, a series of stops from goalkeeper Will Anderson seeing
the hosts drop points for only the third time in fourteen league games this
season.
There was a competitive debut
from the bench for 18 year-old winger Kyle Fitzgerald following his recent
arrival from Galway
United.

confirmed
The outstanding Premier League
fixture between Newcastle and Crystal Palace will be played at SJP on
Wednesday April 16th with a 7.30pm kick-off.

That new date comes between the Premier League home game with Manchester

Newcastle's FA Cup Fifth Round
home tie against the Seagulls is a 1.45pm kick-off
on Sunday March 2nd.
Member sale begins on Monday 24th February at 10am with ticket forwarding/resale
from 4pm that day.
Albion avoided reference to their allocation size when announcing the
ticket sale. Given that they had 2,000 fans here in October and travel
options aren't great for this tie, it would appear likely that they'll not
sell out the maximum number of places they are entitled to.
There's some uncertainty about what the upper figure is, but Bromley (FA
Cup) plus Chelsea and Arsenal (Carabao Cup) were allocated just under 5,000
- the former selling a smaller amount and the latter two selling out.

Born Or Died:
1957 Tony
Smith born, sunderland. (1975-79) Junior and reserve central defender who appeared for England U19s while on the books at SJP. Smith's debut came in the only game Willie McFaul took caretaker charge of during the 1977/78 season, bridging the gap between the the departing Dickie Dinnis and arriving Bill McGarry in mid-November 1977. That was a 0-1 loss at Wolves, with Smith appearing off the bench and then earning his only start - in midfield - for the next game , a 2-1 home defeat to Arsenal. Sidelined with ankle ligament damage, Tony moved on to Division Three Peterborough United during March 1979 in a £10,000 joint deal with Alan Guy. Later serving Halifax Town, Smith joined Hartlepool United in 1984 following a short trial with Colchester United and played over 200 games at The Victoria Ground. Offered only a one year contract in 1989, Tony opted to quit full-time football, taking a job at Nissan on his native wearside and playing for non-league Blue Star.
1985 Alan O'Brien born, Dublin, Ireland. (2005-07)
Left-sided touchline hugger who was brought to the club in summer 2001 from St Joseph's Boys club in Sallynoggin,
near Dublin. After appearing for our U17 and U19 sides, O'Brien's reserve debut came in a 4-2 loss to Aston Villa in March 2003. However, he had to wait for almost three years before getting a sniff of the first team, when appearing for the final four minutes of our home FA win over Mansfield Town in January 2006. That wasn't his senior bow though, having made five appearances on loan at Carlisle, including a goal after just seven minutes of his debut (v Bristol Rovers, October 2005). In total O'Brien made one league start and eight appearances from the bench (four PL, three FA Cup and one European) for us. He left in the summer of 2007 to join former Reserve coach Tommy Craig at Hibernian. However, injury disrupted his time at Easter Road and Alan frequently appeared from the bench during his three seasons in Scotland. A free agent in the summer of 2009, Alan joined League One side Swindon Town, but again found his appearances restricted by a series of injury problems. Signing for Yeovil Town in August 2011, his time at the Glovers ended in January 2012 and after a brief trial at St. Mirren (and a third link-up with Tommy Craig) he joined Conference side Gateshead. After a dozen appearances for The Heed, O'Brien was released in Summer 2012 and reappeared at Hungerford Town, where he remained for five years. A switch to Chippenham Town in August 2017 proved to be short-lived and within a month he'd moved on to Wealdstone. However, a recurring injury problem during pre-season training saw Alan forced into retirement during June 2018. While at SJP, O'Brien gained five full caps for the Republic, debuting in his native Dublin against Holland back in August 2006.
2022 Death of Steve Black, 64.
(1992-96, 2015-16)
Fitness guru "Blackie" had
two spells at SJP, brought in by Kevin Keegan and then almost twenty years
later returning with Steve McClaren.

What Else?
1897 LoughboroughTown (a) 0-3 (0-2) Division Two P22, 27pts, 4th/16 Roulstone(8,35), Blackett(75) 2,000 Newcastle's second-ever visit to the Athletic Ground was
as unproductive as the first -
this defeat following a 0-1 loss to the Luffs almost exactly a year earlier.1904 Everton (h) 2-0 (0-0) Friendly Rutherford(1-0), McWilliam(2-0) 4,000
United spurned an opportunity to go ahead when Jack Carr's first half penalty kick was blocked by Toffees custodian Kitchen.
Contemporary
newspaper reports named Mackey in the side as a forward on trial from
local side Wallsend Park Villa.
However later research revealed that Mackey was wrongly identified and
it was actually Joe McClarence who was on trial - and signed permanently
a week later.
Team: Watts,
Bennie, Agnew, Gardner, McWilliam, Carr, Rutherford, Howie, McClarence, Orr, Roberts. 1909 West Ham United (a) 0-0 (0-0) FA Cup 3rd Round 17,000 A second FA Cup meeting with the Southern League Hammers in two seasons saw them cash in by doubling admission prices. 1915 Sheffield Wednesday (a) 2-1 (1-0) FA Cup 3rd Round King(40), Hibbert(51) McLean(61) 25,971 1926 Clapton Orient (a) 0-2 (0-2) FA Cup 5th Round Galbraith(24), Cock(44) 31,400 Despite dominating the first half, First Division United couldn't beat home custodian Arthur Wood and trailed by two goals at the break to their opponents, who were battling relegation in Division Two.
Peter Gavigan had volleyed home a corner before another rare attack in the closing seconds of the half ended with Donald Cock's solo run and shot past 'keeper Willie Wilson.
Magpies danger man Hughie Gallacher had passed a pre-match fitness test but was shackled all game by Orient centre half Jack Townrow, watched by a record crowd at the O's Millfields Road ground. Newsreelfootage is online here

1932 Middlesbrough (a) 1-2 (0-1) Division One P28, 33pts, 7th/22 Feeney(26) Bruce(67), McKay(77) 18,694
United lost a closely-fought game at Ayresome Park, scoring once but having
two other goals ruled out.
The Sunday Mirror correspondent noted that "the game was spoiled by
over-energetic football in the second half and the referee had to warn several
of the visitors." 1937 Chesterfield (a) 0-4 (0-2) Division Two P31, 31pts, 9th/22 Ponting(35,79), Woodward(38,59) 10,163
Newcastle's first-ever league visit to Saltergate was memorable for all the
wrong reasons - reduced to ten men when Jesse Carver limped off with the game
scoreless.
In addition to scoring four, the hosts had three efforts disallowed for
offside.
Magpie goalkeeper Norman Tapken was afforded an ovation from Chesterfield fans
at full time, after keeping the score down. 1943 Gateshead (h) 2-0 (1-0) Wartime Short(14,55) 17,100
Centre forward John Short guested from Leeds United and netted both goals
against his hometown club. 1947 Leicester City (a) 2-1 (2-1) FA Cup 5th Round Replay Pearson(13), Bentley(29) S.Smith(5pen) 28,424 A light covering of snow on the Filbert Street pitch indirectly cost City the tie, when an attempted clearance from Walter Harrison stuck on the penalty spot and Roy Bentley poked it home.
City were reduced to ten men for part of the second half when George Dewes came off second best in a collision with Frank Brennan.
He eventually returned swathed in bandages - wisely
opting to avoid Brennan by taking up a wide left position. 1954 West Bromwich Albion (a) 2-3 (0-2) FA Cup 5th Round Mitchell(63),Milburn(87) Allen(5,23,72) 61,088 The eventual cup winners progressed, but United recovered from trailing 0-2 at the interval to look like forcing a replay, before Ronnie Allen volleyed home what proved to be the winner. 1960 West Ham United (a) 5-3 (3-2) Division One P30, 31pts, 9th/22 Hughes(3), Allchurch(20), White(27,60), Eastham(63) Dick(38), Woosnam(39,49) 25,000 The Magpies were 3-0 ahead before the half hour mark, but the home side were level by the 49th minute.
Back came the black and whites, with their fifth a memorable effort from George Eastham, who waltzed round four opponents in the driving rain before finding thenet.
This proved to be the last competitive game that Eire International 'keeper Noel Dwyer played for the Hammers, with the suspicion of match fixing later raised but never proven.
1965 Leyton 0rient (a) 1-2 (0-1) Division Two P31, 41pts, 1st/22 McGarry(81pen) Elwood(38,75) 8,319 Tommy Knox made his debut on a Brisbane Road pitch that was ankle deep in mud.

1970 Dundee United (Scotland) (h) 3-2 (1-0) Friendly Moncur(26), Dyson(75), Robson(82) Wilson(80),Mitchell(85) 8,685 A blank FA Cup weekend saw the Tannadice Tangerines make a Friday night visit.
Winger Ian Mitchell netted for the visitors and later joined Newcastle in a £50K deal, while fellow Scot Phil McGovern had a rare senior outing for the Magpies.
Team: McFaul, Craig, Clark, Gibb(Elliott 46), McNamee, Moncur, Robson, Smith, McGovern, Guthrie, Ford (Dyson46).
1971 Tottenham Hotspur (h) 1-0 (0-0) Division One P29, 28pts, 14th/22 Robson(77) 31,718 Pop Robson supplied the winner in what proved to be the final appearance of his United career.
1980 Birmingham City (h) 0-0 (0-0) Division Two P29, 36pts, 4th/22 27,069 You're probably looking at the highlight of this game - the programme cover- with shots from our New Year's Day victory over the mackems.
1982 Shrewsbury Town (a) 0-0 (0-0) Division Two P24, 37pts, 11th/22 4,636 One of the lowest post-war attendances to watch a competitive Magpies game. Those who stayed away from Gay Meadow chose wisely....
1988 Wimbledon (h) 1-3 (0-1) FA Cup 5th Round McDonald(57) Gibson(6), Gayle(56), Fashanu(85) 28,796 Undoubtedly the highlight of this FA Cup humiliation was the post-match kick Mirandinha aimed at Dons 'keeper Dave Beasant's backside. Unlike any of the Brazilian's shots during the game though, it hit the intended target.

1996 United old boy Glenn Roeder left his job as Watford Manager "by mutual consent". He'd been in charge at Vicarage Road for two and a half years and although the Hornets did rally after his departure, relegation to the third tier of English football followed that summer. 1999 Southampton (a) 1-2 (0-2) Premiership P26, 34pts, 10th/20 Hamann(86) Beattie(16), Dodd(43pen) 15,244 Ex-Saint Alan Shearer spurned two good early chances before Steve Howey's
poor back pass left Shay Given stranded and gifted an opening goal to
James Beattie.
Didier Domi's needless pull on Ostenstad was then spotted by referee Graham Poll and the resultant penalty buried us before half time.
Alan Shearer
got one back on 73 minutes but it was ruled out for pushing and by the time Didi Hamann headed
in, another Dell disaster was inevitable. NUFC.com match report
2000 Tranmere Rovers (a) 3-2 (2-1) FA Cup Quarter-final Speed(27), Domi(36), Ferguson(58) Allison(45), G.Jones(76) 15,776 A Sunday success at Prenton Park saw away fans housed in the Cowshed End and singing "Moo Moo Black & White Army"....
Kevin Gallacher's
assists put his side two up and although a trademark long throw from Dave
Challinor laid on one home goal, there was little danger of second tier Rovers halting
Newcastle's progress to a Wembley semi-final against Chelsea. NUFC.com match report
2003 A goalless draw for the Reserves against Leeds at Belle Vue, Wakefield. NUFC.com match report 2005 Chelsea (h) 1-0 (1-0) FA Cup 5th Round Kluivert(4) 45,740 An amazing day as United inflicted a rare defeat on the Champions-to-be and ruined
any quadruple hopes.
Our own
dreams of lifting silverware were preserved mainly thanks to slices of good fortune that
appeared as frequently as the flurries of snow fell on the pitch. After Patrick Kluivert's headed
opener, Mateja Kezman hit the underside of our bar when he had beaten Shay Given all ends up. But it was in the second period that the tie seemed destined to be ours when an injury to Wayne Bridge saw the visitors reduced to ten men with 48 minutes
gone. Jose Mourinho had gambled with a triple substitution but that backfired almost immediately when Bridge
fell awkwardly after a tackle by Alan Shearer. As Bridge was being taken to the RVI with a suspected broken ankle, his colleagues Carlo Cudicini and Damien Duff collided, the latter hobbling his way to
full time. As United stuttered against effectively nine men, the Blues were reduced further when Cudicini was red-carded
for upending Shola Ameobi as he rounded the visiting 'keeper. NUFC.com match report 2006 Alan Shearer's dreams of ending his career with an FA Cup success were dealt a severe blow by his old pal Rob Lee. Former team mate Lee drew out our ball (no.2) away to Chelsea in the FA Cup Sixth Round draw. 2007 Newcastle's second string twice came from behind to force a 2-2 draw against Manchester City's Reserves at
the SportCity ground next to the Etihad. Lee Clark's young side fell behind only for Andy Carroll to equalise and when Fraser Forster was beaten again,
midfielder Mark Doninger soon levelled to earn a point. NUFC.com match report

2017 Aston Villa (h) 2-0 (1-0) Championship P32, 69pts, 1st/24 Gouffran(42), og(Lansbury)(59) 50,024 United returned to the
top of the Championship after this Monday night live TV victory. Villa manager Steve Bruce had urged Henri Lansbury to enjoy abuse from home fans following his antics
while a Nottingham Forest player earlier that season. But the
future Magpie boss - whose mackem past was loudly referenced by home
fans couldn't have foreseen an own goal
from Lansbury that left him the toast of Tyneside. That made it 2-0 to
the hosts, Yoan Gouffran's seventh goal of the season giivng them an interval lead they
were never in danger of surrendering. NUFC.com match report
