Squad:
New deals for duo

Newcastle confirmed on Thursday that two players have agreed new contracts to extend their stay at SJP.

Defender Emil Krafth has signed a new 12 month deal while goalkeeper Martin Dubravka put pen to paper on an extension of undisclosed duration.

Meanwhile, contract talks with defender Fabian Schar are reportedly continuing.

That leaves Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis and Callum Wilson in the final months of their SJP deals, along with goalkeeping pair John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie.

The Athletic have written in recent days that a new contract offer for Wilson is unlikely but that is tbc.

Update:
Old boy acquitted

The trial of former Spanish Football Federation supremo Luis Rubiales for sexual assault concluded on Thursday with a guilty verdict and a fine but no prison term.

The charge followed the televised kiss between Rubiales and Spanish international Jenni Hermoso after full time in the 2023 Women's World Cup Final against England.

Rubiales was acquitted of a further charge of coercion related to events that followed the incident, along with three other officials accused of the same offence.

One of that trio was ex-Magpie Albert Luque - who at the time was Sporting Director of the Spanish men's team and originally called as a witness before further investigations resulted in the charge.

NFFC: Carlos Miguel and Taiwo Awoniyi are doubts.

A trio of ex-Magpies could face their old team, Elliot Anderson and Matz Sels making first returns to Tyneside and Chris Wood bagging a hat-trick here last season.

Forest have lost their two most recent away games in the PL, 0-5 at Bournemouth and 1-2 at Fulham.

Referee:
Jarred Gillett - second appearance of the season for the Australian-born official, who also took charge of the 1-1 home PL draw with Manchester City.

After losses to Bournemouth and Fulham, United will hope to avoid three successive PL home defeats for the first time since February 2021 under Steve Bruce.

A 3-1 success on the banks of the Trent in November gives the Magpies an opportunity of their fourth league double of the season - following maximum returns against Spurs, Wolves and Southampton.

Newcastle's U21 side return to PL2 action on Friday, when they face their Arsenal counterparts at the Meadow Park home of Boreham Wood FC.

Manchester United U18s  0  Newcastle U18s  0

Following last week's 1-5 home loss to Blackburn Rovers, Saturday saw Newcastle U18s face a Manchester United side who themselves won 5-1 on Tyneside in September.

A creditable defensive performance yielded a point at Carrington however, a series of stops from goalkeeper Will Anderson seeing the hosts drop points for only the third time in fourteen league games this season.

There was a competitive debut from the bench for 18 year-old winger Kyle Fitzgerald following his recent arrival from Galway United.

Badge comp answer

New issues from badge guru Magpin commemorate the goals scored by Anthony Gordon in both Carabao Cup semi-final ties against Arsenal earlier this season.

On sale here are the first leg edition, capturing Gordon's corner flag pose and his scarf twirling celebration badge from the second leg.

We had a pair
to give away and asked which current Newcastle team mate was in the opposition side when Gordon scored his maiden Magpie goal in May 2023.

It was Lewis Hall - who was a Chelsea player that day - and the winning entry came from Charles Dytham.

PS: Also available to buy now from Magpin is a bumper set of assorted current season NUFC player stickers:

Premier League:

Palace (h) confirmed

The outstanding Premier League fixture between Newcastle and Crystal Palace will be played at SJP on Wednesday April 16th with a 7.30pm kick-off.

The original fixture date was rendered irrelevant by Newcastle's involvement in the Carabao Cup Final.

That new date comes between the Premier League home game with Manchester United and visit to Aston Villa - the latter falling on Easter weekend.

2024/25:
Liverpool (a)

Wednesday night sees Newcastle face Liverpool in the Premier League at Anfield in what is a dress rehearsal for the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley next month.

It's an 8.15pm start live on TNT Sports and United's 3,000 tickets are sold out.

The game will be shown live at WonderBar in The Gate, which opens at 10am.

City centre bars with live TV coverage include:

The Dog & Parrot on Clayton Street West
The Prince on Pudding Chare

Team: To follow

LFC: Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley miss out, with Cody Gakpo a doubt.

Ahead of our visit, Arne Slot's side shared four goals at Aston Villa in the Premier League on Wednesday. They then travel to Manchester City this coming Sunday.

Liverpool have lost just once in 26 PL games so far this season, a 0-1 home defeat by Nottingham Forest last September. That game was also the last time that the Reds failed to find the net in the PL.

Referee: Chris Kavanagh - fourth toon game of the season for the Manchester-based official following the 2-1 PL victory at Wolves, 2-0 Carabao Cup win home against Chelsea and 1-2 PL loss to Fulham at SJP.

Newcastle's FA Cup Fifth Round home tie against the Seagulls is a 1.45pm kick-off on Sunday March 2nd.

Member sale begins on Monday 24th February at 10am with ticket forwarding/resale from 4pm that day.

Albion avoided reference to their allocation size when announcing the ticket sale. Given that they had 2,000 fans here in October and travel options aren't great for this tie, it would appear likely that they'll not sell out the maximum number of places they are entitled to.

There's some uncertainty about what the upper figure is, but Bromley (FA Cup) plus Chelsea and Arsenal (Carabao Cup) were allocated just under 5,000 - the former selling a smaller amount and the latter two selling out.

On This Day in History
20th February

Born Or Died:

1957 Tony Smith born, sunderland.
(1975-79)

Junior and reserve central defender who appeared for England U19s while on the books at SJP.

Smith's debut came in the only game Willie McFaul took caretaker charge of during the 1977/78 season, bridging the gap between the the departing Dickie Dinnis and arriving Bill McGarry in mid-November 1977.

That was a 0-1 loss at Wolves, with Smith appearing off the bench and then earning his only start - in midfield - for the next game , a 2-1 home defeat to Arsenal.

Sidelined with ankle ligament damage, Tony moved on to Division Three Peterborough United during March 1979 in a £10,000 joint deal with Alan Guy.

Later serving Halifax Town, Smith joined Hartlepool United in 1984 following a short trial with Colchester United and played over 200 games at The Victoria Ground.

Offered only a one year contract in 1989, Tony opted to quit full-time football, taking a job at Nissan on his native wearside and playing for non-league Blue Star.

1985 Alan O'Brien born, Dublin, Ireland. (2005-07)

Left-sided touchline hugger who was brought to the club in summer 2001 from St Joseph's Boys club in Sallynoggin, near Dublin.

After appearing for our U17 and U19 sides, O'Brien's reserve debut came in a 4-2 loss to Aston Villa in March 2003.

However, he had to wait for almost three years before getting a sniff of the first team, when appearing for the final four minutes of our home FA win over Mansfield Town in January 2006.

That wasn't his senior bow though, having made five appearances on loan at Carlisle, including a goal after just seven minutes of his debut (v Bristol Rovers, October 2005).

In total O'Brien made one league start and eight appearances from the bench (four PL, three FA Cup and one European) for us.

He left in the summer of 2007 to join former Reserve coach Tommy Craig at Hibernian. However, injury disrupted his time at Easter Road and Alan frequently appeared from the bench during his three seasons in Scotland.

A free agent in the summer of 2009, Alan joined League One side Swindon Town, but again found his appearances restricted by a series of injury problems.

Signing for Yeovil Town in August 2011, his time at the Glovers ended in January 2012 and after a brief trial at St. Mirren (and a third link-up with Tommy Craig) he joined Conference side Gateshead.

After a dozen appearances for The Heed, O'Brien was released in Summer 2012 and reappeared at Hungerford Town, where he remained for five years.

A switch to Chippenham Town in August 2017 proved to be short-lived and within a month he'd moved on to Wealdstone.

However, a recurring injury problem during pre-season training saw Alan forced into retirement during June 2018.

While at SJP, O'Brien gained five full caps for the Republic, debuting in his native Dublin against Holland back in August 2006.

United spurned an opportunity to go ahead when Jack Carr's first half penalty kick was blocked by Toffees custodian Kitchen.

Contemporary newspaper reports named Mackey in the side as a forward on trial from local side Wallsend Park Villa.

However later research revealed that Mackey was wrongly identified and it was actually Joe McClarence who was on trial - and signed permanently a week later.

Despite dominating the first half, First Division United couldn't beat home custodian Arthur Wood and trailed by two goals at the break to their opponents, who were battling relegation in Division Two.

Peter Gavigan had volleyed home a corner before another rare attack in the closing seconds of the half ended with Donald Cock's solo run and shot past 'keeper Willie Wilson.

Magpies danger man Hughie Gallacher had passed a pre-match fitness test but was shackled all game by Orient centre half Jack Townrow, watched by a record crowd at the O's Millfields Road ground.

A light covering of snow on the Filbert Street pitch indirectly cost City the tie, when an attempted clearance from Walter Harrison stuck on the penalty spot and Roy Bentley poked it home.

City were reduced to ten men for part of the second half when George Dewes came off second best in a collision with Frank Brennan.

He eventually returned swathed in bandages - wisely opting to avoid Brennan by taking up a wide left position.

Didier Domi's needless pull on Ostenstad was then spotted by referee Graham Poll and the resultant penalty buried us before half time.

Alan Shearer got one back on 73 minutes but it was ruled out for pushing and by the time Didi Hamann headed in, another Dell disaster was inevitable.

An amazing day as United inflicted a rare defeat on the Champions-to-be and ruined any quadruple hopes.

Our own dreams of lifting silverware were preserved mainly thanks to slices of good fortune that appeared as frequently as the flurries of snow fell on the pitch.

After Patrick Kluivert's headed opener, Mateja Kezman hit the underside of our bar when he had beaten Shay Given all ends up.

But it was in the second period that the tie seemed destined to be ours when an injury to Wayne Bridge saw the visitors reduced to ten men with 48 minutes gone.

Jose Mourinho had gambled with a triple substitution but that backfired almost immediately when Bridge fell awkwardly after a tackle by Alan Shearer.

As Bridge was being taken to the RVI with a suspected broken ankle, his colleagues Carlo Cudicini and Damien Duff collided, the latter hobbling his way to full time.

As United stuttered against effectively nine men, the Blues were reduced further when Cudicini was red-carded for upending Shola Ameobi as he rounded the visiting 'keeper.

2006 Alan Shearer's dreams of ending his career with an FA Cup success were dealt a severe blow by his old pal Rob Lee. Former team mate Lee drew out our ball (no.2) away to Chelsea in the FA Cup Sixth Round draw.

2007 Newcastle's second string twice came from behind to force a 2-2 draw against Manchester City's Reserves at the SportCity ground next to the Etihad.

Lee Clark's young side fell behind only for Andy Carroll to equalise and when Fraser Forster was beaten again, midfielder Mark Doninger soon levelled to earn a point.

Villa manager Steve Bruce had urged Henri Lansbury to enjoy abuse from home fans following his antics while a Nottingham Forest player earlier that season.

But the future Magpie boss - whose mackem past was loudly referenced by home fans couldn't have foreseen an own goal from Lansbury that left him the toast of Tyneside.

That made it 2-0 to the hosts, Yoan Gouffran's seventh goal of the season giivng them an interval lead they were never in danger of surrendering.
