of Sunday lunch date

Newcastle  4  Nottingham Forest  3

A first half brace from Alexander Isak made him only the second Newcastle player to hit 50 Premier League goals, but his side came mighty close to blowing a three goal lead during a chaotic afternoon at St. James' Park.

Trailing to Callum Hudson-Odoi's sixth minute shot after an error by Jacob Murphy, Lewis Miley's 23rd minute effort began a spectacular 11 minute spell from United as four attacks down their left flank yielded four goals.

Miley was one of three changes to the side beaten 0-4 at Manchester City; replacing Sandro Tonali. Kieran Trippier made way for Tino Livramento and Nick Pope was recalled at the expense of Martin Dubravka.

Within two minutes of making it 1-1, United led after Murphy atoned for his earlier rick by touching home a deflected Lewis Hall centre with his knee.

2-1 became 3-1 when a pitchside VAR review deemed Ola Aina guilty of handball, Isak's unconvincing panenka spot kick conversion barely deceiving Matz Sels.

The former Magpie 'keeper was picking the ball out of his net again seconds later; another sweeping Newcastle move ending with Isak's shot taking a touch off Murillo.

Having perfected the art of unlocking Forest's defence though, Newcastle promptly lost it after half time: Fabian Schar's header striking the goal frame after a corner a rare moment of danger from the hosts.

A series of misplaced passes and poor decisions then gave the visitors hope and they regained a foothold in the game after Nikola Milenkovic bundled home Elliot Anderson's 63rd minute corner kick.

Increasing apprehension among the home players was mirrored by their supporters as the feast became a famine: a series of near-misses around Pope's goal combining with a perplexing inability to trouble Sels.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side duly scored a third in the last second safter more defensive uncertainty; substitute Ryan Yates bundling home a rebound off Schar.

Thankfully though, the 4-4 draw that had begun to look nailed on didn't come to pass - due in no small part to the mercifully short three minutes of added time.

Callum Wilson almost ended a breakaway with a goal but was crowded out when trying to score, when options of passing or running the clock down seemed viable.

A game that encapsulated United's entire season ended with three valuable points putting them up into fifth and leaving 50,000 fans mightily relieved - this club, man....

Crowd:
52,223 including 3,000 away fans.

Club Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan attended - ahead of a meeting on Monday to discuss future stadium plans.

Alan Shearer and Ryan Taylor were both present.

Eddie Howe:

"It was a crazy game. We've seen the best of us and the worst of us, really, in two 45 minutes.

"I thought we were outstanding in that first half, everything that we weren't against Manchester City in our last game: dynamic, fluid, played with speed intensity, we sprinted. We attacked really well.

"But we didn't sustain it in the second half. We lost momentum and then couldn't recapture it.

"There's always relief when you win. It doesn't matter whether you're one goal or five goals up.

"We have to remember we did win the game, even though the feeling is probably very different after watching the second half.

"The challenge that we need to pose each other, really, as a group is to find solutions in those moments to help the players. That's what I'll go away now and try to figure out.

"This has happened too many times this season, where we've been inconsistent game-to-game, but we've been inconsistent in-game as well.

"Ultimately we've won the game, so I have to be very, very pleased. That was a tough game – we knew it was going to be – but the players were magnificent in their response to conceding, so loads of good stuff to take away and of course some stuff to improve.

"I am trying to control my thoughts and stay positive.

"We didn't manage the game well but overall we are happy with the win.

"It was always a difficult game and when they took the early lead you know you have a big task. I thought we were great with the ball and looked dynamic, but then a couple of frailties showed in terms of defending set plays.

"When you win and you have things to improve, that is a good starting point. That's what I'll take away from today.

"We can reflect on that 45 minutes and there are things that we can do better. We pride ourselves on doing better and getting the details right.

"It was good to see the chairman but he might have heard a couple of swear words from me. I think he was in the same sort of emotional state though.

"It’s probably why I do love management, even though I hate it at the same time in moments.

"The elation which you feel for a split-second on some of the performance in that first half, the pride you see in the players doing well is then counteracted with all the feelings that the supporters feel, really, watching that game.

"You feel you have control on the sideline, but the reality is it’s very difficult to influence the game in the way that you want to, so yes, a bit of love and hate in there.

"But ultimately again taking the bigger picture, we’ve won the game, as difficult as that second half was.”

On Champions League aspirations:

"I think there’s a host of teams that will have that feeling. We’re in there fighting and I back us if we’re fighting and showing our best qualities, as we did in that first half.

"We’ll hopefully be there towards the end fighting and competing for that place, but nothing is guaranteed.

"It’s such a competitive league this year and you can see that from our recent home games."

On Alexander Isak reaching 50 goals:

"It’s a huge achievement, when Alex plays like he did in the first half, he’s massive for us."

On Lewis Miley:

"A really good performance from Lewis. He finished his goal really well. He can be really pleased, he's been developing really well."

On Sandro Tonali:

"He had a hamstring problem in the week, he missed a couple of days training.

"I didn't really want to risk him today but with the second half as it was we felt we needed his legs in midfield.

"He said he felt OK to play. It was a reluctant sub but I thought he did OK when he came on and touch wood he's OK."

On selecting Nick Pope:

"It was a big decision, they're all big decisions but I understand why the goalkeeper is highlighted because there's only one.

"It's always with a view to trying to pick a team to win a football match. That's what I did today.

"I value both goalkeepers that have played this year, Martin and Nick. Nick has got his strengths, Martin has got his strengths.

"Nick distributed the ball really well, he played a part in two goals today. He helps us with set plays and the physical threat, which we didn't do well enough with our outfield players. But he'll be disappointed to concede three goals for sure."

Stats:

United's four goal burst came in an 11 minute period - one minute quicker than the 12 minutes during which it went from 1-0 to 5-0 at home to Spurs in April 2023.

Four goals were also scored by United in a 12 minute spell against Swindon Town at SJP during March 1994. That finished 7-1 to the black and whites.

An 8-2 home win over Everton during November 1959 featured four Newcastle strikes in a 14 minute spell.

The Magpies scored four goals in one half of a PL game for the first time since an 18 minute period against Sheffield United at Gallowgate in April 2024 took the score from 1-1 to 5-1.

Alexander Isak
scored his 49th and 50th goals in the Premier League for Newcastle. The Swede now has 19 PL goals this season and 21 in all competitions.

Nottingham Forest are Isak's joint favourite opponents, his fifth and sixth PL goals against the Tricky Trees matching the half dozen he's bagged against Spurs.

Lewis Miley doubled his PL goal tally following a shot at home to Fulham back in December 2023. They were both scored at the Gallowgate End, as was his strike against Bromley in this season's FA Cup.

Jacob Murphy hit his fifth PL goal of the season; his career best to date, eclipsing the four in 2022/23.

He now has 16 to his name in that competition, taking him level with current colleague Fabian Schar and one ahead of Andy Carroll.

Newcastle recovered from going 0-1 behind to win for the seventh time in all competitions this season:

Wolves (a) PL Lemina 36 mins
Forest (a) PL Murillo 21 mins
Spurs (a) PL Solanke 4 mins
Bromley (h) FA Congreve 8 mins
Southampton (a) PL Bednarek 10 mins
Birmingham City (a) FA  Laird 1 min
Forest (h) PL Hudson-Odoi 6 mins

Following losses to Bournemouth and Fulham, United avoided what would have been three successive PL home defeats for the first time since February 2021.

The Magpies completed their fourth league double of the season - following maximum returns against Spurs, Wolves and Southampton.

Forest @ SJP - PL era:

20245/25 won 4-3 Isak 2 (1 pen), Miley, Murphy

Old boy:
Dawson exits City

Former Newcastle U21 coach - and briefly interim first team boss - Ben Dawson has left his post on the Leicester City coaching staff.

The 44 year-old moved to the Foxes last July to work under Steve Cooper, taking charge of the side for once game in November and remaining at the King Power Stadium when Ruud van Nistelrooy was appointed.

Dawson spent a decade at the Magpies that included a stint in charge of the senior side in 2019, between the departure of Rafa Benitez and arrival of Steve Bruce.

U18s:
Double delight
for youngsters

Newcastle U18s  3  Liverpool U18s  1

Saturday saw Newcastle U18s win only their second home league game of the season, doing the double over Liverpool following a 3-2 away success last September.

In mild and sunny conditions at Little Benton, the Reds took an early lead; Schofield Lonmeni pushing down the right and Joe Bradshaw's pull back dispatched by Kareem Ahmed with a first time shot in only the fifth minute.

Clear-cut chances for either side were in short supply from that point; Josh Sonni-Lambie's shot pushed on to the crossbar by home 'keeper Will Anderson in the 26th minute and United's Kasey Wooster similarly grazing the goal frame two minutes before the break.

It took just six minutes of the second period to bring the equaliser, substitute Kyle Fitzgerald advancing down the right before the overlapping Henry Johnson crossed low to the back post for Michael Mills to fire in.

That gave the home side added impetus and with the visitors looking vulnerable, further Newcastle goals weren't long in arriving.

A back heel by Michael Mills towards the left hand corner flag on the hour gave Sam Alabi the chance to centre - centre forward Kacey Wooster in the right place to finish from six yards via the underside of the bar.

Mills almost got another a minute after the restart but Reds' 'keeper Bailey Hall denied him at the near post.

With 15 minutes remaining Hall brought down Fitzgerald in the box and Wooster made no mistake from the spot with a confident low conversion for 3-1.

That left a travel-sick Reds side with just one point from a possible 21 on the road so far this season.

Team: Anderson, Johnson, Bloomer (Epia 85), Watts, Craggs, Cogdon, Waddani (Fitzgerald 46), Harper (O'Donovan 66), Wooster, Alabi, Mills (Durrant 85.

New deals for duo

Newcastle confirmed on Thursday that two players have agreed new contracts to extend their stay at SJP.

Defender Emil Krafth has signed a new 12 month deal while goalkeeper Martin Dubravka put pen to paper on an extension of undisclosed duration.

Meanwhile, contract talks with defender Fabian Schar are reportedly continuing.

That leaves Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis and Callum Wilson in the final months of their SJP deals, along with goalkeeping pair John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie.

The Athletic have written in recent days that a new contract offer for Wilson is unlikely but that is tbc.

Update:
Old boy acquitted

The trial of former Spanish Football Federation supremo Luis Rubiales for sexual assault concluded on Thursday with a guilty verdict and a fine but no prison term.

The charge followed the televised kiss between Rubiales and Spanish international Jenni Hermoso after full time in the 2023 Women's World Cup Final against England.

Rubiales was acquitted of a further charge of coercion related to events that followed the incident, along with three other officials accused of the same offence.

One of that trio was ex-Magpie Albert Luque - who at the time was Sporting Director of the Spanish men's team and originally called as a witness before further investigations resulted in the charge.

Badge comp answer

New issues from badge guru Magpin commemorate the goals scored by Anthony Gordon in both Carabao Cup semi-final ties against Arsenal earlier this season.

On sale here are the first leg edition, capturing Gordon's corner flag pose and his scarf twirling celebration badge from the second leg.

We had a pair
to give away and asked which current Newcastle team mate was in the opposition side when Gordon scored his maiden Magpie goal in May 2023.

It was Lewis Hall - who was a Chelsea player that day - and the winning entry came from Charles Dytham.

On This Day in History
24th February

Born Or Died:

1912 Death of Thomas Wills, 34.
(1903-06)

Tom was killed in an accident while employed in the mining industry in South Africa.

1987 Marc Walton born, Blakelaw.
(2001-05)

Centre forward at junior and reserve level, "Wally" was a past winner of the "wor Jackie" promising newcomer award and capped at youth level by England.

However, his finest hour at SJP was the 2003 Northumberland Senior Cup Final, when he came off the bench to score both goals against Whitley Bay in a 2-0 win.

After leaving Newcastle under something of a cloud, Wally played for Carlisle's reserve side while on trial at Brunton Park before joining Torquay United in early 2006.

However, he failed to make his league debut for the Gulls, although he did make it to the subs bench at Plainmoor.

Returning to the North East via a tryout for Doncaster Rovers, he appeared for non-league sides Blyth Spartans, Newcastle Blue Star, Newcastle Benfield, Prudhoe Town and West Allotment Celtic.

Diagnosed with a long-standing hernia problem, Wally underwent surgery thanks to PFA funding and signed for Ryton, instantly getting back among the goals.

That attracted the interest of various clubs including Gateshead, but he opted for a second stint with Blyth Spartans in late 2008.

After a brief spell with Durham City, Marc then returned to the Northern League with Morpeth Town - later moves taking him on to West Allotment Celtic, Consett, Ashington, West Allotment again and Bedlington Terriers.

He later worked for Newcastle City Council.

1989
Death of Joe Harvey, 71.
(1945-55[pl], 1962-89 [Mgr, Coach, Scout])

Had Stan Seymour not been accorded the nickname “Mister Newcastle”, then Joe Harvey would have laid strong claim to it – like Seymour, serving the club as both captain and manager.

As it is though, Harvey is one of a number of former Magpies deserving of the title of honorary Geordie – settling on Tyneside in preference to his native Yorkshire.

Spotted playing for Bradford City during World War 2 (when he scored twice against Newcastle), Harvey moved to SJP at a cost of £4,250 in October 1945.

Making his competitive debut in the same FA Cup tie against Barnsley in 1946 as Jackie Milburn, Harvey led by example on the field and also had no problem making himself heard – having previously served as Company Sergeant -Major in the Royal Army Physical Training Corps.

A mainstay of the side from 1946 to 1953, Harvey then moved into the backroom staff before leaving after the 1955 FA Cup Final to begin his managerial career.

Two years at Barrow then saw him move the short distance on to Workington, where amongst others he signed striker Ron McGarry, who was to follow Harvey when he returned to Tyneside in 1962.

Taking over a recently-relegated side who had flirted with a second relegation, Harvey rebuilt with new signings and graduates from the successful FA Youth Cup side of that year, achieving promotion back to the First Division at the third attempt in 1964/65.

But in his own estimation, the summit of his footballing achievements came when the side he managed brought European silverware back to Tyneside in 1969 – the second leg of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final coinciding with Harvey’s fifty-first birthday.

Having enjoyed Wembley success twice with the club on the field, defeat in the 1974 FA Cup Final proved to be a bitter blow and one from which Harvey never fully recovered from, leaving his post within a year after some fans turned on him.

He remained on the staff at Gallowgate though, returning in a caretaker manager capacity in 1980 at the age of 62, while the club sought a replacement for Bill McGarry.

Unlike Milburn, Harvey’s funeral was a low-key affair but nonetheless he remains firmly in the affections of generations of Newcastle supporters.

Not considered a fitting subject for either a statue or a stand to be named after him, a tangible tribute came in the form of a bronze plaque on an external wall of the Gallowgate End.

That was unveiled in 2014 by Harvey's son Ken, along with ex-Magpie Bob Moncur and Joe's 1950s team-mate Vic Keeble.

1995 Ryan Fraser born, Aberdeen, Scotland. (2020-24)

Having signed Bournemouth forward Callum Wilson earlier the same day in September 2020, Newcastle then revealed that Scottish international midfielder Ryan had followed him from the relegated Cherries to SJP..

Beginning his career at hometown club Aberdeen, a £400K switch to Bournemouth came in 2013 and Fraser helped his new side reach the top flight two years later.

However he stayed in the second tier, joining Ipswich Town on a season-long loan.

Returning to Bournemouth for the 2016/17 season, Ryan became a regular starter until the latter part of 2019/20, when he refused to agree a short-term contract extension in order to be available for the restarted season.

Moving to Newcastle as a free agent, Fraser's first game for his new club saw him score the only goal in a home League Cup win over Blackburn Rovers.

However, he struggled for fitness and was unable to play regularly in the Premier League - blotting his copybook with a thoughtless red card away at Sheffield United.

A return to form came following the arrival of former Cherries boss Eddie Howe at SJP in October 2021 - Ryan becoming a regular starter and netting in crucial home wins over Everton and Brighton as the threat of relegation steadily receded.

Less involved during the 2022/23 season as United found themselves towards the top of the table and overlooked for the club's Carabao Cup campaign, a departure in the mid-season window seemed inevitable.

However no transfer followed; an absence of bids for a player reputed to have a £10m price tag and a failure to seal a loan move despite several credible links.

That let Fraser training with the U21 squad on his 29th birthday rather than preparing for a trip to Wembley, although under contract until 2025.

With no prospect of a reconciliation with Howe, he was loaned out to Southampton for the 2023/24 season, contributing significantly as the Saints gained promotion back to the Premier League via the playoffs.

A permanent deal to St. Mary's eventually followed in August 2024.

Internationally, Fraser made his senior bow for Scotland against England in June 2017 and soon became one their mainstays.

November 2021 saw him clash with national team boss Steve Clarke; withdrawing from a squad ahead of a World Cup qualifier due to injury but then training with his club.

A subsequent reconciliation with Clarke saw Fraser return to the Scotland side by the following year.

1995 Jacob Murphy born, Wembley.
(2017-present)

Ahead of their Premier League return in 2017, Newcastle paid a claimed £10m for the England U21 winger from Norwich City.

Having flown out for pre-season in Germany with the Canaries, Jacob diverted to Ireland and linked up with United at their Carton House training base near Dublin.

Netting against his new club at both SJP and Carrow Road during the 2016/17 season, United's new head scout Steve Nickson then watched Murphy at the European U21 Championships.

Debuting for Norwich in January 2014, Jacob was loaned out to both Swindon Town and Southend United that season, with further temporary moves to Blackpool, Scunthorpe United and Colchester United in 2014/15.

Signing on loan for Coventry City during the 2015/16 campaign, he netted ten times and playing with Magpie loanee Adam Armstrong.

The 2016/17 season saw Jacob start regularly for Norwich, often with twin brother, Josh - like Jacob a boyhood Mag who saw his first NUFC game aged just 4.

Murphy's Toon career got off to a good start with two goals in a pre-season friendly at Bradford City and he slowly established himself into the first team picture.

A fine finish at Manchester City then gave Jacob a first competitive goal for the club in early 2018.

Remaining on the first team fringes the following season, he returned to the Championship when loaned to West Bromwich Albion in January 2019.

Settling quickly and scoring twice in his first five games, Jacob and fellow NUFC loanee Dwight Gayle helped the Baggies into the playoffs, losing to Aston Villa.

Back at SJP and featuring in pre-season for Newcastle, a failure to win a place in the PL squad saw him make a season-long loan switch to Sheffield Wednesday.

The 2020/21 season saw Murphy back in the picture at Gallowgate, returning to the squad and playing regularly for the first team in what was the final year of his contract.

Boosted by a new long-term deal, Jacob was primarily deployed from the bench by Eddie Howe, frequently replacing Miguel Almiron on the right flank.

He became a regular first team starter; the 2024/25 season arguably his best in a black and white shirt, scoring five so far and creating many others for his team mates.

2001 Anthony Gordon born, Kirkdale (2023-present)

United's only major signing of the January 2023 transfer window was an England U21 forward whose £45m price tag made him the second costliest arrival at Gallowgate behind Alexander Isak.

Moving from boyhood club Everton, Anthony swapped a toxic environment only too familiar in previous years on Tyneside for a rather more positive outlook - even if he was ineligible to play for his new club when they reached the final of the Carabao Cup.

Making a senior bow for the Toffees in a Europa League tie in 2017, his Premier League debut came two years later, loaned out to Preston North End the following season.

Following Peter Beardsley, Gary Speed and Duncan Ferguson from Goodison to SJP in the Premier League era, Anthony debuted at home to West Ham in February 2023.

His first Magpies goal arrived in the last game of the season at Chelsea, followed by England duty at the U21 European Championships - playing as a central striker and scoring twice as his side won the tournament in Georgia.

With a minimal break, Gordon embarked on the 2023/24 season during which he would debut in the Champions League and score 12 Premier League goals including winners against Arsenal and Manchester United.

A first full England cap came against Brazil at Wembley in March and he was included in the Euro 2024 Finals squad.

However, the most notable incident in Germany was falling off his bike during training, unused save for one fleeting substitute outing during England's passage to the final and defeat by Spain.

Remaining a Magpie despite claims of a move to Liverpool in order to conform with PSR requirements, November 2024 saw Gordon score his maiden England goal, in a 5-0 Nations League win over Ireland.

The lead over Manchester United was still a healthy seven points with 11 games left.

Tino scored his first United goal, but it was memorable for his two comings-

Alan Shearer returned after just over two months out with an injured knee - but would play just once more before his season came to a premature end.

Home fans weathered a post-match blizzard but had already been left cold by a thoroughly dispiriting performance on the pitch.

City were already well on their way to the Nationwide - despite this victory they remained in the relegation zone.

Following two draws there, Newcastle won for the first time the stadium of plight, as the tradition of Magpie defenders scoring in this game continued.

Following Didier Domi, Helder and Andy O'Brien was Nicos Dabizas; heading in a Laurent Robert free kick flicked on by Alan Shearer in front of an away section that predictably exploded with delight.

A fourth successive league victory for Bobby Robson's side put them two points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United with a game in hand.

A repeat of the 2-1 scoreline in Holland gave us a reasonably comfortable passage into the last 16 of the UEFA Cup.

An own goal and Alan Shearer's 24th European strike made it 2-0 at the break and with the Dutch side needing to score three in the second half, only a calamity was going to prevent us progressing.

Shola Ameobi gave away a daft penalty but two further goals never seemed likely and we prepared for another visit to Greece, after Olympiakos beat former foes Sochaux 2-0 on aggregate.

2006 As a result of the FA's ludicrous decision to stage the Charlton v Smogs FA Cup tie on a Thursday night for live TV, the Addicks were permitted to move our game at the Valley from Saturday March 25th to Sunday March 26th with a 2pm kick-off.

Not for the first time, Toon fans who had booked travel, hotels etc. for the original date were vastly inconvenienced by the switch.

Newcastle recorded back to back home victories for the first time that season, coming from behind to make it three wins in four League outings.

And for Alan Pardew there was the added satisfaction of seeing his Magpies side finally beat a club he previously managed - the first time in five attempts in 2012/13.

Goalkeeper Rob Elliot made a Premier League debut in bow of the injured Tim Krul.

United should have been in the top half of the Premier League but instead dropped to 15th after throwing away a two goal lead.

Deservedly two up at half time due to Dwight Gayle's opportunism, Ayoze Perez and Jonjo Shelvey wasted chances for a third before substitute Adam Smith beat Martin Dubravka.

SJP old boy Dan Gosling then levelled, United hanging on for a point as the hosts sought a winner. The Cherries fielded future Magpies Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser.

United's five game unbeaten run in league and cup came to an abrupt end at the Emirates.

The host continued their goalscoring glut by putting four past stand-in 'keeper Loris Karius, three of those coming via final touches from visiting players.

A late strike from ex-Gunner Joe Willock ended our goal drought at this ground, but there was nothing else to cheer.
