2024/25:
Anfield anguish again
Liverpool 2 Newcastle 0

Wednesday saw Newcastle extend their winless Premier League run at
Anfield to 29 games - failing to register a single shot on target in
the absence of Alexander Isak.
United's top scorer missed out with what was described as a slight
groin strain, Callum Wilson recalled to start his first league game
since May 2024 and lasting 69 minutes before making way for William
Osula.
Wilson had two shots on goal - one offside - without testing home
goalkeeper Allison - but otherwise the 3,000 away fans endured
another 90 tedious minutes on a par with the last away game at
Manchester City.
The Magpies had actually taken the lead on three of their last five
visits to Anfield before succumbing to Liverpool attacks, but
tonight's outcome was never in doubt after the 11th minute of the
opening half.
Fabian Schar failed to stop Luis Diaz advancing down the left and
when the Colombian cut the ball back from the byline,
Dominik Szoboslai netted with a
shot that went through two sets of legs and took a slight deflection
off Burn before beating Nick Pope with what was Liverpool's 100th
league and cup goal so far this season.
Further home goals could have followed; Newcastle's perpetual
nemesis Mo Salah cutting in from the right to fire narrowly over
from distance and Szoboslai also not too far away from calling Pope
into action.
At the other end, a perfect through ball from Dan Burn released
Wilson but he sliced the ball wide with only Alisson between him and
the Kop End net.
United did find some space down their right flank in the opening
half, but Jacob Murphy struggled to provide service from that area
and received little help from his colleagues, Bruno Guimaraes in
particular a non-entity and Anthony Gordon continually hassled by
opponents and home supporters alike.
One behind at the interval, neither side made any real impact in an
uneventful opening to the second period, before the Reds moved
closer to claiming the title with a second goal just after the hour
mark - as challengers Arsenal were dropping points at Nottingham
Forest.
Alexis Mac Allister began the move after Sandro Tonali surrendered
possession and the Argentinean was in the right place to receive a
return pass from Salah in the box, before stylishly sweeping the
ball home.
That prompted the replacement of four visiting players - messrs
Wilson, Tonali, Livramento and Willock making way for Osula, Miley,
Trippier and Barnes.
A third home goal was then wiped out by VAR for a foul before Pope
denied Salah. The visitors meanwhile won a couple of corners that
were easily dealt with.
As a dress rehearsal for next month's Carabao Cup Final next month,
those clad in black and white tonight gave no grounds for optimism
that our 70 year quest for silverware search is in any danger of
ending soon.
The return of Isak, Joelinton and Sven Botman may lessen our chances
of becoming the first team ever to lose three League Cup Finals, but
we'll have to show rather more fight there than in this dreary
display.
Despite conceding an early goal again, United should have
gone in level at half-time against a Reds side who did enough to win
without overly exerting themselves.
They may be the best on the planet, but tonight they only needed to
be competent. Maybe we're just lulling them into a false sense of
security, maybe....
Like visits to the Etihad, coming to Anfield is a uniformly
miserable experience when we seem to be a beaten team before the
first whistle sounds.
Sadly, that also applies to Wembley...
Victories for Chelsea on
Tuesday and Manchester City on Wednesday left Newcastle sixth in the
table - four points off third spot and two points ahead of tenth.
Full match report to follow.

were sold out.
Eddie Howe said:
"We played OK tonight, decent performance.
Disappointed with goals we conceded.
"The first goal we don't track him
into the box. We're fighting in the game after that to try and get the next
goal. But then we do exactly the same thing. Two soft goals.
On Callum Wilson:
"Callum will always back himself and we back him to take the chances,
they're not easy opportunities. He played well tonight, led the line and
played well."
On having no shots on target:
"Not good, can't sit there and say we planned that. We had
opportunities, obviously you're not going to get an abundance of chances
here so when you do you have to take them and we didn't do that
tonight."
On lessons for facing Liverpool again at
Wembley:
"You always learn, sometimes you learn more in defeat than victory an
two games against them this season we've been competitive but we have to
perform better than today if we want to win the trophy.
"We need to find our best rhythm
again, we have a few players out missing hopefully we can get them back. Big
games, big moments in our season. We're still in both cups and we want to
stay that way."
Referee:
Stuart Attwell
- the Warwickshire whistler took charge of his third Newcastle game this
season, following the 4-0 win at Ipswich Town and 1-4 home defeat by
Bournemouth.
(Attwell was a late replacement
for
Chris
Kavanagh, switching from Thursday's West Ham v Leicester City game - reason
unknown).

Hat compo answer

As modelled by a certain local musician, the
Shearer reversible bucket hat from Tyneside-based Football Bobbles
is ideal for winding your way down on Baker Street and along Wembley Way
come March 16th.
Available to buy here,
we had one up for grabs and
asked how many times Alan Shearer played at Wembley Stadium for Newcastle
United.
The answer was four (two FA Cup finals, one FA Cup semi-final and one
Charity Shield) and the name of the winning entrant will appear here on
Thursday.
U21s:
Robins rob Magpies
Altrincham 3 Newcastle U21s 3
(Altrincham win 3-2 on pens)
Match action
Newcastle U21s exited from
the National League Cup at the quarter-final stage to Altrincham on
Tuesday.
With the scoreline standing 3-3 after 90 minutes, the tie went straight to a
penalty shootout at Moss Lane.
The hosts won that 3-2 as follows (AFC went first):
Griffiths saved 0-0
Alfie Harrison scored 1-0
Reddin scored 1-1
Ellis Stanton missed 1-1
Cooper missed 1-1
Jay Turner-Cooke scored 2-1
Kosylo scored 2-2
Sean Neave saved 2-2
Amaluzor scored 2-3
Leo Shahar missed 2-3
The hosts went ahead after six minutes, Kahrel Reddin cutting in from the
left flank and placing his shot beyond visiting goalkeeper James Taylor.
Alty doubled their advantage with 10 minutes played, Kian Taylor left
unattended to head home following a corner kick by Elliot Osborne.
That lead was halved on 19 minutes however, Garang Kuol beating debutant Rob
Lainton from 25 yards.
And parity was restored just before the half hour mark when Lainton upended
Jay Turner-Cooke in the box and the Newcastle man got to convert the penalty
kick.
Into the second half and United went ahead for the first time in the tie on
57 minutes when Kuol dispossessed a defender before burying a low effort
past replacement custodian Harvey Randle.
Chances were then made and missed at both ends; Johnny Emerson denied by
Randle on 61 minutes and Reddin seeing his shot strike the goal frame before
Taylor grabbed it on the goal line five minutes later.
The second spot kick award of the evening then came with 13 minutes of
normal time remaining, Magpies substitute Rory Finneran fouling Remi
Thompson.
Up stepped Joe Nuttall, but paused too long in his run-up to try and dummy
Taylor - the Alty player ending up with a booking for his trouble and United
restarting play with a free kick.
The home side levelled the tie in the final seconds, a cross from the left
headed home by Justin Amaluzor.
Remi Thompson then missed a glaring chance to win two minutes into five
added on, firing over from six yards.
That was the last meaningful action, sending the tie into a penalty shootout
that the Magpies lost 2-3.
Team: Taylor, Shahar, Charlton, Bailey (Finneran 46), Heffernan, C.Thompson, Kuol

Former
Newcastle U21 coach - and briefly interim first team boss - Ben Dawson
has left his post on the Leicester City coaching staff.
The 44 year-old moved to the Foxes last July to work under Steve Cooper,
taking charge of the side for once game in November and remaining at the
King Power Stadium when Ruud van Nistelrooy was appointed.
Dawson spent a decade at the Magpies that included a stint in charge of the
senior side in 2019, between the departure of Rafa Benitez and arrival of
Steve Bruce.
U18s:
Double
delight
for youngsters
Newcastle U18s 3 Liverpool U18s 1
Saturday saw Newcastle U18s
win only their second home league game of the season, doing the double over
Liverpool following a 3-2 away success last September.
In mild and sunny conditions at Little Benton, the Reds took an early lead; Schofield Lonmeni
pushing down
the right and Joe Bradshaw's pull back dispatched by Kareem Ahmed
with a first time shot in only the fifth minute.
Clear-cut chances for either side were in short supply from that point; Josh
Sonni-Lambie's shot pushed on to the crossbar by home 'keeper Will Anderson in the 26th
minute and United's
Kasey Wooster similarly grazing the goal frame two minutes
before the break.
It took just six minutes of the second period to bring the equaliser,
substitute Kyle
Fitzgerald advancing down the right before the overlapping Henry Johnson
crossed low to the back post for Michael Mills to fire in.
That gave the home side added impetus and with the visitors looking
vulnerable, further Newcastle goals weren't long in arriving.
A back heel by Michael Mills towards the left hand corner flag on the hour
gave Sam Alabi the chance to centre - centre forward Kacey Wooster in
the right place to finish from six yards via the underside of the bar.
Mills almost got another a minute after the restart but Reds' 'keeper Bailey
Hall denied him at the near post.
With 15 minutes remaining Hall brought down Fitzgerald in the box and
Wooster made no mistake from the spot with a confident low conversion
for 3-1.
That left a travel-sick Reds side with just one point from a possible 21 on the road so far
this season.

26th February |

Born Or Died:
1900 Thomas Fraser born, Glencairn, Scotland (1923,
1924-25)
Beginning
his playing career at local side Hurlford, goalkeeper Tom spent time on loan at
both Kilmarnock and Dundee before signing for the latter club in 1922.
A second spell at the Beith club a year later included a brief trial at SJP and
an eventual transfer to Gallowgate in May 1924.
Injury to Sandy Mutch saw Fraser arrive as back-up to first-choice custodian
Bill Bradley shortly before the FA Cup Final.
In pre-substitute days Tom wasn't part of the Wembley-winning squad but did
join United's post-season tour of Spain - dirtying his gloves on a number of
occasions and earning praise from local reporters for back to back clean sheets
against Barcelona.
Unable to dislodge Bradley, Fraser moved back to Scotland in August 1925,
signing for Clyde and helped them gain promotion to the top flight in his first
season.
Emigrating to the USA in 1927, Tom later played for Bethlehem Steel and Newark
Americans. His death was recorded in Pennsylvania during January 1973.
1921
Robert Stone Donaldson born,
South Shields (1943-47)
Defender who appeared for the Magpies in wartime football after joining from his
hometown club.
Donaldson later joined Hartlepool United and played on until 1951, later
becoming trainer at the Vic.
Subsequently serving as North Shields trainer,
Bobby died in 1990.

1974 John Milner born, sunderland.
(1989-92)

Although later to become a prolific non-league striker, John was a diminutive
full back during his time at Newcastle's Academy.
Graduating from the juniors to make his reserve team debut against Coventry
City during December 1991, Milner was released by Magpies boss Kevin Keegan
the following year.
Penshaw-based, John signed for Seaham Red Star and struck a hat-trick when
filling in at centre forward in a pre-season game.
Later playing for Bishop Auckland and South Shields, he joined Bedlington
Terriers in 1995 and helped them to five successive Northern League titles.
Milner's most high-profile season of 1998/99 saw Bedlington reach the Second
Round of the FA Cup and end the campaign in the FA Vase Final at Wembley
Stadium.
That ended in a 0-1 defeat by Tiverton Town, but a host of Football League
clubs were scouting him, including Burnley, Southampton, Stoke City, Notts
County, Oxford United and Tranmere Rovers.
Milner went on trial at St. Mirren and made several appearances for York
City reserves, including one against Newcastle's second string at Kingston
Park.
However he failed to make the switch into the full time game and remained at
Bedlington until a move to Durham City in 2006.
Twice returning to the Terriers, he also appeared for Washington before
retiring after briefly joining Ryton in 2010.
1978 Abdoulaye Faye born, Dakar, Senegal.
(2007-08).

Brought to SJP from Bolton Wanderers for £2m by his former boss
Sam Allardyce in August 2007, Senegal international central defender Faye had
faced United in our season-opening 3-1 victory at the Reebok shortly before
becoming a Magpie.
His bow came from the bench in Sam's first setback - a 0-1 defeat
at Derby County in mid-September, along with fellow deadline day arrival Habib Beye.
Some encouraging no-nonsense displays followed from Faye, who netted his
only goal for the club in a 1-5 home mauling by Manchester United in February
2008.
By then Kevin Keegan had replaced Allardyce and Faye departed after
a dressing room dispute on the final day of the season, failing to
reappear after half time in our defeat at Goodison Park.
Playing no part in our pre-season fixtures, Faye was sold to Stoke City for
£2.5m on the eve of the season, returning to SJP four months later to net
a last-minute leveller in a 2-2 draw with the Potters.
Released by Stoke in the summer of 2011, Faye was reunited with Sam Allardyce
once again when signing for Championship side West Ham shortly afterwards.
The following summer then saw the free agent join Hull City on a one year deal,
scoring four times as the Tigers secured a return to the Premier League.
Accepting a one year deal to remain at the KC Stadum, Abdoulaye made only
isolated appearances and left in the summer of 2014 when a free
agent.
December 2014 then saw him confirmed as joining Malaysian side Sabah FA before
hanging up his boots.
Faye did make a one-off playing return in the colours of Stoke City for
ex-Potter Andy Wilkinson's testimonial match in May 2016.

1979
Bjarni Gudjonsson
born, Akranes,
Iceland. (1997-99)

Diminutive midfielder signed at the age of 18 by then-Magpies
boss Kenny Dalglish from
hometown club, IA
Akranes for £500K.
After appearing for the juniors and reserves he never looked
remotely like graduating to the first team, despite being
picked for the Iceland senior side - winning the first of 19
full caps in April 1997 against Slovakia. Bjarni
left SJP in 1999, linking up with his brothers at Belgian
side Racing Genk, in a £125K transfer.
He returned to England in 2000, joining up with the
new Icelandic owners at Stoke City and going on to make over 150
appearances for the Potters.
Moving to Bundesliga side Bochum in 2003, Gudjonsson was back in England within
a year at Coventry City and later Plymouth Argyle.
Released by the Home Park club in January 2006, Bjarni returned to Iceland for a second spell with IA
Akranes, defecting to their rivals KR Reykjavík in 2008.
Helping KR to win the league in both 2011 and 2013, he then
retired and took on his first managerial role, at Fram Reykjavík.
By October 2014 he'd returned to KR Reykjavík as manager, remaining in post
for almost two years. A spell as assistant boss of Vikingur
Reykjavik was followed by another stint at KR in a similar
role in 2018.
That ended in 2021 when Gudjonsson became U19 coach at
Swedish side Norrkoping. 1989
Gabriel Obertan born, Pantin, France. (2011-16)
 Having
spent a year with Paris Saint Germain as a youngster, midfielder Obertan won a
place at the French Football Federation's Clairefontaine youth training facility.
Signing for Bordeaux in 2005 and combining reserve team football with foreign
language studies (he speaks English, French, Dutch, Italian and
Spanish), Gabriel broke into the first team the following year.
Capped at youth and U21 level by France and remaining in the first team
pool but often appearing as substitute - he pushed for a loan to Lorient midway through the 2008/09 season, although
later recalling it as "six horrible
months".
Joining Manchester United in July 2009 for a claimed £3m - having snubbed a
move to Old Trafford at the age of 15 - Obertan played 28 times in all
competitions in two seasons. Despite
playing on both flanks and occasionally at number 10, he
was never a regular starter, his sole goal coming in a Champions
League tie against Bursaspor.
Failing to face Newcastle in either league meeting in 2010/11, he played
and scored twice for the reserves against the Magpies at Darsley Park that
season.
Concluding Newcastle's French signing frenzy in August
2011, Gabby
followed Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye and Sylvain Marveaux, debuting in a season-opening 0-0 home draw with Arsenal.
It later became evident that Alan Pardew had pushed through the
acquisition of Obertan amid opposition from the other decision-makers at
the club. Showing flashes of
inspiration and pace but lacking consistency, he belatedly announced his
arrival by scoring at Blackburn Rovers (his 22nd appearance) the following February.
However, his progress was halted by a toe infection and he managed only
three minutes in our final ten games, beginning the
following campaign down the pecking order and mostly utilised in cup ties. Scoring the winner
against Bruge at SJP in the Europa League in October 2012, a further absence
followed before his troublesome toe ailment was rectified.
A brief return to the side in early 2013 coincided with a collective
downturn and after another Gallic influx, Obertan was again relegated to
the bench.
However the 2014/15 season began more positively, with a return to
the side in pre-season after being omitted from the squad for a New
Zealand tour.
A run of starts included the
only goal in a home win over Leicester City in October - our first league
success that season.
Two weeks later though, a thigh injury against Liverpool
kept him out for three months - by which time Pardew was gone.
A handful of appearances for interim boss John Carver followed, but Obertan
totally failed to recapture whatever form he'd displayed and ended the season
as an occasional, unused substitute.
The arrival of Steve McClaren saw him play in pre-season, and
he began well with an assist for Gini
Wijnaldum in the season-opener against Southampton.
Another injury wasn't far away though and what would be his last
senior outing was at home to Chelsea in September 2015.
Released the following May, a six month stay at Russian
side Anji Makhachkala followed, before a loan return to England at
Championship side Wigan Athletic.
Agreeing a two year deal with Bulgarians Levski Sofia, by
2019 he was playing in Turkey, for Erzurumspor.
His next stop was the US, signing for USL Championship side
Charlotte Independence in August 2021.

1992
Matz Sels born,
Lint, Belgium.
(2016-18)
Goalkeeper secured from KAA Gent in June 2016 for a claimed £5m - then the costliest custodian
in United's history and the first signing made by Rafa Benitez.
Joining Gent from Lierse in 2014, he helped them to Belgian title success a
year later, ensuring Champions League qualification and a run to the last
sixteen stage.
Making 116 senior starts and keeping 38 clean sheets at Gent, Sels became the
second Belgian-born player to join United following Philippe Albert.
Earning a call-up to the full Belgian squad in 2015, the former U21
international played twice in the run up to Euro 2016 but missed out on the
Final squad.
Featuring in pre-season, Matz debuted in United's opener at Fulham with Karl
Darlow on the bench, Rob Elliot injured and Tim Krul shortly to leave for Ajax
on loan.
However, his unconvincing form saw him dropped after nine league games
- used only in cup ties and doing little to boost his
reputation in a penalty shootout defeat at Hull City in the League Cup.
An almost inevitable departure was then agreed in June 2017, joining the
reigning Belgian Champions Anderlecht on loan.
He then made a permanent move to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg in June 2018 for
£3.5m.
January 2024 saw Sels surprisingly return to the Premier League in January 2024
with
Nottingham Forest.
His second game pitted him against United at the City Ground, but there were to
be no heroics as Newcastle won 3-2.
His recent performance in the 4-3 win for United over Forest at Gallowgate
confirmed that his old failings were still in evidence.

The scoreline replicated our most recent pair of cup final losses here in 1998

looked committed but in dire need of inspiration.
Two goals in seven first half minutes ruined the day, despite a fantastic
