2024/25:
Anfield anguish again
Liverpool 2 Newcastle 0

Wednesday saw Newcastle extend their winless Premier League run at
Anfield to 29 games - failing to register a single shot on target in
the absence of Alexander Isak.
United's top scorer missed out with what was described as a slight
groin strain, Callum Wilson recalled to start his first league game
since May 2024 and lasting 69 minutes before making way for William
Osula.
Wilson had two shots on goal - one offside - without testing home
goalkeeper Allison - but otherwise the 3,000 away fans endured
another 90 tedious minutes on a par with the last away game at
Manchester City.
The Magpies had actually taken the lead on three of their last five
visits to Anfield before succumbing to Liverpool attacks, but
tonight's outcome was never in doubt after the 11th minute of the
opening half.
Fabian Schar failed to stop Luis Diaz advancing down the left and
when the Colombian cut the ball back from the byline,
Dominik Szoboszlai netted with a
shot that went through two sets of legs and took a slight deflection
off Burn before beating Nick Pope with what was Liverpool's 100th
league and cup goal so far this season.
Further home goals could have followed; Newcastle's perpetual
nemesis Mo Salah cutting in from the right to fire narrowly over
from distance and Szoboszlai also not too far away from calling Pope
into action.
At the other end, a perfect through ball from Dan Burn released
Wilson but he sliced the ball wide with only Alisson between him and
the Kop End net.
United did find some space down their right flank in the opening
half, but Jacob Murphy struggled to provide service from that area
and received little help from his colleagues, Bruno Guimaraes in
particular a non-entity and Anthony Gordon continually hassled by
opponents and home supporters alike.
One behind at the interval, neither side made any real impact in an
uneventful opening to the second period, before the Reds moved
closer to claiming the title with a second goal just after the hour
mark - as challengers Arsenal were dropping points at Nottingham
Forest.
Alexis Mac Allister began the move after Sandro Tonali surrendered
possession and the Argentinean was in the right place to receive a
return pass from Salah in the box, before stylishly sweeping the
ball home.
That prompted the replacement of four visiting players - messrs
Wilson, Tonali, Livramento and Willock making way for Osula, Miley,
Trippier and Barnes.
A third home goal was then wiped out by VAR for a foul before Pope
denied Salah. The visitors meanwhile won a couple of corners that
were easily dealt with.
As a dress rehearsal for next month's Carabao Cup Final next month,
those clad in black and white tonight gave no grounds for optimism
that our 70 year quest for silverware search is in any danger of
ending soon.
The return of Isak, Joelinton and Sven Botman may lessen our chances
of becoming the first team ever to lose all of their three League Cup Finals, but
we'll have to show rather more fight there than in this dreary
display.
Despite conceding an early goal again, United should have
gone in level at half-time against a Reds side who did enough to win
without overly exerting themselves.
They may be the best on the planet, but tonight they only needed to
be competent. Maybe we're just lulling them into a false sense of
security, maybe....
Like visits to the Etihad, coming to Anfield is a uniformly
miserable experience when we seem to be a beaten team before the
first whistle sounds.
Sadly, that also applies to Wembley...
Victories for Chelsea on
Tuesday and Manchester City on Wednesday left Newcastle sixth in the
table - four points off third spot and two points ahead of tenth.
Full match report to follow.
Team: Pope, Livramento (Trippier 69), Schar, Burn, Hall,
Tonali (Miley 69), Willock (Barnes 68), Guimaraes (Longstaff 88),
Murphy, Wilson (Osula 69), Gordon.
Subs n/u: Dubravka, Ruddy, Targett, Krafth.
Booked: Murphy.
LFC: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold (Quansah 77), Konate,
Van Dijk, Tsimikas, Gravenberch (Endo 77), Mac Allister (Jones 87),
Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz (Nunez 87), Diego Jota (Gakpo 62).
Subs n/u: Kelleher, Chiesa, Elliott, Robertson.
Booked: None.
Goals: Szoboszlai 11, Mac Allister 63.
Home boss Arne Slot was missing from the touchline after his
two-match ban for transgressions following the Everton game was confirmed on Wednesday morning.
Crowd: 60,374. United's 3,000 tickets
were sold out.
Eddie Howe said:
"We played OK tonight, decent performance.
Disappointed with goals we conceded.
"The first goal we don't track him
into the box. We're fighting in the game after that to try and get the next
goal. But then we do exactly the same thing. Two soft goals.
On Alexander Isak:
"I had a chat with him around lunchtime to see how he felt. We knew he
was feeling something yesterday. We hoped that it would improve overnight
but it didn't improve enough. We don't envisage it being a big problem for
him.
He just didn't feel right with his groin so we didn't want to take the risk
- we've got too many big games to come."
On Callum Wilson:
"Callum will always back himself and we back him to take the chances,
they're not easy opportunities. He played well tonight, led the line and
played well."
On having no shots on target:
"Not good, can't sit there and say we planned that. We had
opportunities, obviously you're not going to get an abundance of chances
here so when you do you have to take them and we didn't do that
tonight."
On lessons for facing Liverpool again at
Wembley:
"You always learn, sometimes you learn more in defeat than victory an
two games against them this season we've been competitive but we have to
perform better than today if we want to win the trophy.
"We need to find our best rhythm
again, we have a few players out missing hopefully we can get them back. Big
games, big moments in our season. We're still in both cups and we want to
stay that way."
Referee:
Stuart Attwell
- the Warwickshire whistler took charge of his third Newcastle game this
season, following the 4-0 win at Ipswich Town and 1-4 home defeat by
Bournemouth.
(Attwell was a late replacement
for
Chris
Kavanagh, switching from Thursday's West Ham v Leicester City game - reason
unknown).
VAR: Matthew
Donohue
Stats:
Liverpool have now lost just once in 28 PL games this season, a 0-1 home
defeat by Nottingham Forest last September. That game was also the last time
that the Reds failed to find the net in the PL.

Dawson exits
City
Former
Newcastle U21 coach - and briefly interim first team boss - Ben Dawson
has left his post on the Leicester City coaching staff.
The 44 year-old moved to the Foxes last July to work under Steve Cooper,
taking charge of the side for once game in November and remaining at the
King Power Stadium when Ruud van Nistelrooy was appointed.
Dawson spent a decade at the Magpies that included a stint in charge of the
senior side in 2019, between the departure of Rafa Benitez and arrival of
Steve Bruce.
U18s:
Double
delight
for youngsters
Newcastle U18s 3 Liverpool U18s 1
Saturday saw Newcastle U18s
win only their second home league game of the season, doing the double over
Liverpool following a 3-2 away success last September.
In mild and sunny conditions at Little Benton, the Reds took an early lead; Schofield Lonmeni
pushing down
the right and Joe Bradshaw's pull back dispatched by Kareem Ahmed
with a first time shot in only the fifth minute.
Clear-cut chances for either side were in short supply from that point; Josh
Sonni-Lambie's shot pushed on to the crossbar by home 'keeper Will Anderson in the 26th
minute and United's
Kasey Wooster similarly grazing the goal frame two minutes
before the break.
It took just six minutes of the second period to bring the equaliser,
substitute Kyle
Fitzgerald advancing down the right before the overlapping Henry Johnson
crossed low to the back post for Michael Mills to fire in.
That gave the home side added impetus and with the visitors looking
vulnerable, further Newcastle goals weren't long in arriving.
A back heel by Michael Mills towards the left hand corner flag on the hour
gave Sam Alabi the chance to centre - centre forward Kacey Wooster in
the right place to finish from six yards via the underside of the bar.
Mills almost got another a minute after the restart but Reds' 'keeper Bailey
Hall denied him at the near post.
With 15 minutes remaining Hall brought down Fitzgerald in the box and
Wooster made no mistake from the spot with a confident low conversion
for 3-1.
That left a travel-sick Reds side with just one point from a possible 21 on the road so far
this season.
Team: Anderson, Johnson, Bloomer (Epia 85), Watts, Craggs, Cogdon,
Waddani (Fitzgerald 46), Harper (O'Donovan 66), Wooster, Alabi, Mills (Durrant
85.

Born Or Died:
1933 Death of Billy Lindsay, 60.
(1898-1900)

1934 Stan Anderson
born, Horden,
Durham. (1963-65)

Right half who was
well-respected as a
player by fans on
Tyneside, Wearside
and Teesside, having
achieved the unique
feat of captaining
all three sides.
Rejected by Boro as a
teenager, Anderson
played for both
Horden Colliery
Welfare and
Sunderland Boys
while training as a plumber.
Signing professional
forms at Roker Park
in June 1949, Stan
played the first of
447 senior games for
them at home to
Portsmouth in
October 1952.
Representing England
at various levels -
including two senior
caps during April
1962 - a dispute
with mackem boss
Alan Brown caused
Anderson to
reconsider his
future on Wearside
in November 1963.
Initially reluctant
to join United,
Joe Harvey persuaded
Stan to speak with
Roker directors, and
their lukewarm
response prompted
him to make a
£19,000 switch.
Debuting
in a 0-4 defeat at
home to
Cardiff City that
November, he
returned to Roker
Park six months
later for a
testimonial match
that pitted his "All
Stars" against a
home XI.
United's promotion
bid failed that
season with an
eighth place finish,
but under Stan's
captaincy the
Magpies would capture the Second
Division
Championship in
1965.
Appearing for
Newcastle in the
top flight, Anderson
then switched to Ayresome Park in an
£11,500 deal, taking
up a player-coach
role in November
1965.
Unable to prevent
Boro's demotion to
Division Three,
Anderson took over
as manager in
February 1966 and
his side secured
promotion at the
first attempt.
He remained in
charge of Boro until
1973, when he moved
on to Greece,
initially with AEK
Athens and then
Panathinaikos,
before spells as
assistant boss at
QPR and scout for
Manchester City.
Three and a half
years managing
Doncaster Rovers
ended in 1978, after
which he moved on to
Bolton and served at
Burnden Park as both
coach and manager.
Settling in
Doncaster, Anderson
scouted for
various clubs over
the years, including
Newcastle.
Honoured by his
first club Horden
Colliery Welfare
with the naming of the stand
at their Welfare
Park ground in 2005,
he passed away in
June 2018.

1955 Tony Bell born, North Shields.
(1973-75)

Goalkeeper who joined United as a junior in 1973 and made his
first team bow in place of the injured Iam McFaul in a Texaco Cup semi-final
first leg tie in November 1974.
That finished 0-1 to Southampton at the Dell, with McFaul back between the
posts for the second leg a fortnight later, when a 3-0 win at Gallowgate
secured an aggregate victory and the silverware.
Between those two games however came Tony's solitary appearance in the Football
League, when he deputised at White Hart Lane as Newcastle were beaten 0-3.
All three goals were scored in a six minute spell during the first half, with
the opener seeing Bell catch a Jimmy Naylor cross but then throw it into the
back of his own net.
Unfortunately the TV cameras were there, ensuring that the
incident would appear on numerous own goals and gaffes videos - complete
with commentator Brian Moore's incredulous response and Naylor's smirks.
What's often forgotten though is that 19 year-old Bell was playing behind a
severely weakened side with six outfield first team regulars missing and
Dennis Laughton and Alex Bruce drafted in for what were their first league
games that season.
McFaul had returned for the next meeting of the two sides at SJP the following
month - but conceded five as Spurs won 5-2.
With the signing of Mick Mahoney in March 1975, Tony found himself pushed down
the pecking order and the new arrival replaced McFaul for two games in April
of that year.
Bell exited from
United on a free
transfer at the end
of that season and
later played for his
hometown club North
Shields.
1986 Adam Bartlett born, Newcastle
(2001-05)

Goalkeeper who was first sighted playing for Newcastle's U17s
in 2001, graduating to the reserves for the first time away at Sheffield
Wednesday during November 2002.
Hastily registered with UEFA as cover for United's visit to Inter Milan the
following March, Adam warmed up in the San Siro but didn't make it on to the
substitutes bench.
Sharing second string duties with Adam Collin, Bartlett was in the Magpies side
that collected the Northumberland Senior Cup in 2003 by beating Whitley Bay.
Released by Newcastle in 2005, Adam had trials at Leeds United, Doncaster
Rovers, Aberdeen, Boston United, Burton Albion, Rushden & Diamonds,
Rotherham United and Dundee United.
Guesting for Dunston Federation Brewery before stints overseas at Rochester
Rhinos (USA) and Skvastaras (Sweden), he then joined Blyth Spartans.
Earning England C honours at Croft Park, Adam also returned to Newcastle as an
Academy goalkeeping coach before making the move to Kidderminster Harriers
in 2008.
A first taste of league football then came a year later at Hereford United,
remaining at Edgar Street for three seasons.
Returning to the region with Gateshead in 2012, Bartlett also played
for Hartlepool United, Darlington, York City and Whickham.
Coaching at Boro's Academy, Adam took up a similar position at Newcastle in
August 2019, responsible for the club's U23 goalkeepers.
Promoted to first team goalkeeping coach in early 2022, he became the club's
Head of Goalkeeping that September, succeeding long-serving Simon
Smith.
1992 Jonjo Shelvey born, Romford
(2016-23)

England international midfielder signed from Swansea City on a
five-and-a-half year contract during January 2016.
Shelvey had played
for the Swans days earlier in a 2-3 FA Cup loss at League Two Oxford United,
but his days in South Wales had looked numbered since the dismissal of
manager Garry Monk a month earlier.
Coveted by Alan
Pardew while Newcastle manager, our interest in Shelvey was first reported
in April 2014 - Pardew having handed Jonjo his senior team debut while
Charlton boss back in April 2008.
With both Arsenal
and West Ham as a youngster, Shelvey first linked up with the Addicks in
2004, departing for Liverpool ahead of the 2009/10 season.
Making 21
appearances in all competitions during his first season at Anfield, a loan
switch to Championship side Blackpool was agreed in October 2011, during
which time Shelvey netted a hat trick away to Leeds while playing alongside
Lomana LuaLua.
Despite signing a new deal for Liverpool in July 2012, Jonjo was sold to fellow
Premier League side Swansea City a year later - having made his full England
bow against San Marino in October 2012.
A City regular, Shelvey signed a new four year deal at the Liberty
Stadium in July 2015 and was a regular starter in the opening months of the
season before the rot set in.
Introduced to the
crowd along with fellow new boy Henri Saivet before a 3-3 midweek home draw
with Manchester United, Jonjo then made an electrifying debut four days
later, inspiring his new colleagues to a 2-1 defeat of West Ham.
Sadly though his performances under both Steve McClaren and successor Rafa
Benitez failed to result in United retaining Premier League status.
Remaining at the club following relegation, Jonjo became an integral part of United's promotion push and scored his first competitive goal against
Brighton.
However, his contribution would be derailed by two misadventures: seeing a red
card overturned for tangling with an opponent on a mad night at Nottingham
Forest, but belatedly receiving a five match ban for abusing a Wolves
player.
United won just two of those five games and struggled for creativity in the
centre of the park - seeing a noticeable uplift when he returned.
Shelvey's return to the Premier League lasted 48 minutes before seeing red
again for a stamp on Dele Alli in the season opener against Spurs.
A second red card followed for a senseless second booking during added time
in the home defeat to Everton.
Both incidents contributed to Rafa Benitez's reluctance to make Jonjo an
automatic first team starter but on his day he could be inspiring - victory
over Manchester United in February 2018 being an example.
A hamstring injury picked up in pre-season kept him sidelined for much of
the 2018/19 season, flying to Barcelona for treatment.
A goalscoring start to the 2019/20 season under Steve Bruce saw Jonjo net
five times by the start of December and despite an injury break he scored
once after the COVID break to end top of the goal-getters with six.
The following season saw him remain consistent if unspectacular, scoring
twice in the 2020/21 season and even finding himself fielded as an emergency centre
half.
Unavailable at the start of the following season, a needless red card against
Spurs in Steve Bruce's last game
was a low point - but like many of his colleagues, the organisational
improvement brought by successor Eddie Howe had a positive impact on his
game. Jonjo's final season on Tyneside saw him sidelined with injuries but he left
on good terms in January 2023, joining Nottingham
Forest, returning to SJP to wave goodbye to the fans at half-time in the League Cup semi-final against Southampton.
Things went awry at the City Ground however after a spat with Manager Steve
Cooper and what was initially termed a loan move to Rizespor in September 2023
was later revealed to be a permanent switch.
He moved to fellow Turkish side Eyupspor in August 2024 but returned to
these shores and joined Championship side Burnley in January 2025.

1992 Callum Wilson born, Coventry.
(2020-present)

Newcastle's need for a goalscorer was addressed in September 2020 by
a £20m acquisition from relegated
Bournemouth.
Originally a midfielder, Callum was with Coventry City's Academy but
left due to the difficulty of getting to training.
A second spell from the age of 14 with the Sky Blues was more
successful and after loan spells at Kettering and Tamworth, he was a regular starter for
City in 2013/14.
21 goals in League One won him a move to Bournemouth, where he
helped them reach the Premier League in his first season.
After five years on the south coast that included a first England cap and a
goal (against the USA at Wembley in November 2018), Wilson opted to join
United in preference to Aston Villa.
Netting on his debut at West Ham, he reached double figures with a brace at
Everton early in 2021 but a hamstring pull then saw him sidelined for some
time.
It was a similar story in the 2021/22 season with half a dozen goals
followed by a serious calf injury in the final game of 2021 against
Manchester United. His 2022/23 season got off to a promising start and appeared in the World Cup in Qatar but injury and loss of form
saw his goals tally remain disappointingly low. His appearance at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final never looked like producing a birthday goal. The 2023/24
campaign saw Wilson in and out of the first team, often coming off the bench as
fitness issues persisted. A needless wrestle at Nottingham Forest saw his season curtailed as a pectoral operation was required.
More injuries followed, meaning he missed most of the 2024/25 season but he
returned to the starting line-up at Birmingham City in the FA Cup and scored
and then started at Anfield with Alexander Isak injured.

2000 Lewis Cass born, North Shields
(2016-22)

Defender signed by Newcastle's Academy from North
Shields Juniors who debuted at U18 level at Stoke City during March
2016.
Beginning his two year scholarship the following season, Lewis soon found
himself appearing for the reserve side in a Central League Cup tie against
Rotherham United.
Making a competitive U23 bow from the bench at Swansea City in January
2017, he signed his first professional deal in July 2018.
Lewis was a regular choice at right back for the reserve side in the 2018/19
campaign, also featuring in central defence on occasion.
Training with the first team during that season, an ankle
ligament injury sustained frustratingly sidelined
him for three months.
However, Cass returned to be an unused substitute in the final
game that Rafa Benitez took charge of - a season-closing 4-0 win at Fulham during May
2019.
And there was another stint on the first team bench for him in early 2020,
against League One Rochdale in the FA Cup.
The following season saw Lewis loaned to National League
Hartlepool United, also agreeing a contract extension at SJP.
A season-long loan to Port Vale was cut short when Lewis returned to Tyneside for treatment to an ankle injury but the move was made permanent in June 2022.
February 2024 saw Cass move to Stockport County on loan, reuniting with his former
Hartlepool boss Dave Challinor.
Lewis joined League Two side Grimsby Town on a two-year deal in July 2024.
