OUT FA Cup:
Newcastle 0 VAR 2
Newcastle 1 Brighton 2
(aet)
Newcastle crashed out of the FA Cup in extra-time
after the intervention of VAR saw Anthony Gordon sent off and Fabian
Schar's late winner ruled out at St. James' Park on Sunday
afternoon.
Gordon will now miss the Carabao Cup Final unless his red card is
overturned on appeal and Schar's fabulous volley was ruled to be
millimetres offside thanks to the newly-adopted semi-automated technology.
Had both incidents happened in a previous round of this competition, Newcastle would be
quarter-finalists and Gordon would be
available to face Liverpool at Wembley, having missed the 2023 final
when he was cup-tied.
As it is though, Eddie Howe now faces a repeat of the scenario two years ago
when a straight red card for Nick Pope in the Premier League resulted in his
suspension for the Carabao Cup Final.
The Magpies boss also has to contend with a team looking lethargic and
uninspired for long periods of matches, something that sadly seems to be in
our collective DNA when counting down to Wembley trips.
Six changes from the side beaten at Anfield in midweek confirmed our level
of intent, but the intensity just wasn't there despite Alexander Isak's 22nd minute penalty
getting the hosts off to a decent start.
The Swede then burst through to ripple the Leazes End net again on 32
minutes, but was rightly denied by a raised offside flag and VAR
confirmation.
The visitors equalised just before half-time when former Magpie Yankuba
Minteh - who had earlier given away the penalty by fouling Tino
Livramento - hit an effort that flew in
off Kieran Trippier's boot to level the tie.
Clear chances were rare at either end after the break, substitute Joe Willock
missing a header in front of goal that
should have put United ahead.
However, it looked like Fabian Schar had taken his side into the
last eight when he volleyed in a 93rd minute free-kick until VAR ruled the top of Schar's
torso to be marginally offside, halting celebrations and ensuring
that an extra 30 minutes would be played.
By that point both sides were down to ten men with Gordon and Tariq
Lamptey shown red cards by referee Anthony Taylor.
The whistle had gone for an offside long before Gordon and Jan Paul
van Hecke tussled for the ball after 83 minutes, the Dutchman throwing himself to
the ground clutching his face.
That prompted VAR to tell Taylor to show Gordon a red card for an
innocuous two-handed shove on the side of van Hecke's face.
The referee was clearly taking advice in his ear after giving the
offside against Isak and preparing for the restart.
Newcastle will inevitably appeal against the sending off but with
contact clearly made by the brainless Gordon, the decision seems likely to stand.
Albion's red followed eight
minutes later; Lamptey shown a second yellow for a foul on Jacob
Murphy that resulted in the free kick that Schar volleyed home in vain.
Both sides had made their full quota of replacements before
extra-time and with Joao Pedro limping for Albion, United looked
more likely to find a winner.
That changed when Albion substitutes Solly March and Danny Welbeck combined in the
114th minute; the 34 year-old lifting the ball over Martin Dubravka at the
Leazes End with Livramento playing him onside.
Former mackem striker Welbeck also struck the winner
in the Premier League meeting here last October but we were our own worst
enemies again, sloppy in possession and ultimately outsmarted by mediocre
opposition.
Pushed into the forward line, Dan Burn fired a fierce shot across goal that could have
taken the tie to penalties had it hit the target, but the damage was done
earlier on another calamitous afternoon.
With Isak and Trippier limping off, Livramento ailing and Lewis Hall already
sidelined, this defeat ended up as a double cup disaster for United -
crashing out of the FA Cup and left short-handed for the Carabao Cup.
Full match report to follow.

Crowd: 51,566.
Albion sold around 1,100 tickets.
Among the crowd was former favourite Tino Asprilla.
Eddie Howe said after the game:
"It's a tough one for us to take. It was very bitty, a real physical
game for us.
"It had everything with the
red cards as well and extra-time. We thought we'd won it at the end.
"We had a couple of players
feeling the effects of the game. Tino (Livramento) ended up
not being able to contribute so, in some respects, we were down to
nine.
"I thought the other
substitutes did really well and gave us a bit more energy, but it
was a really tough, physical game for both teams.
"We could have done better,
of course we could.
"I’m desperately disappointed to have lost. It was a tough
contest, both teams gave everything, there were a lot of emotions.”
On the red card:
"I’ve only seen it live, so it’s very difficult to form an
opinion. From what I saw on the pitch, I don’t know what Anthony’s
intention was, but I’m sure it wasn’t to harm the player or get the
red card.
"In that moment, I don’t know quite what’s happened, so I
have to review it properly before forming my opinion.
"To be honest, I wasn’t aware initially (that it would rule
Gordon out of the final). My focus was so absorbed on the game
and trying to win. If that is the case, then I’m desperately
disappointed for him and for the team.
"Knowing the player, I know there’s no malice intended there. Of
course, we’ll reserve the right to put in an appeal. If we analyse
the incident and feel there’s grounds for that, then we will do it
without hesitation.
"I don’t think you’ll allow me for it not to be a distraction, to a
degree. But I think it’s most important what we discuss internally.
We’ll review the incident first, then we’ll have a discussion with
Anthony to make sure that he’s okay.
"If Anthony is missing the game, then of course that would be a big
blow to us. But as always, when someone suffers a misfortune in that
way, it’s someone else’s opportunity. That’s what we have a squad
for, and that’s what we have very good players for.
"We have to look at it that way, and I’m sure Anthony would want us
to look at it that way. I’m sure, in his absence, he would want us
to carry on, be really strong and try to win the game."
On Alexander Isak:
"Alex just felt a bit of general tightness. I don’t
think it was an injury, it was just general tightness, but we felt
as though he had to come off."
On Tino Livramento:
"Tino was clearly
struggling, although I think it was cramp more than an injury. He
was limited, and that limited us a lot, although I thought the
players around him covered that really well.
On Kieran Trippier:
"Kieran felt his back, so we were navigating a lot of problems
through that game that we hope don’t have long-term consequences
for us because we have such a small squad.”
On Sven Botman:
"Sven was close, but he did light training (on Saturday)
and didn’t feel 100% confident in his body. So, we decided not to
risk him. We still hope that he can play a part either in our next
game or the game after.
"We’re desperate to get him back fit because he’s such a
big player, but we couldn’t take the risk with him if he wasn’t
100% fit.”
On Lewis Hall:
"It’s an ankle problem that Lewis picked up after the
Liverpool game. He didn’t really recover well. He felt pain, so he
had a scan and now he’s been to see a specialist.
"We’re awaiting further news. There’s no timescale on that
at the moment.”
Referee:
Anthony Taylor (Cheshire).
Taylor again had a hand in Newcastle's Carabao Cup Final chances, adding
Gordon's red to the one he gave Nick Pope against Liverpool before
the 2023 Final.
Although he gave the decisions, the 21st century version of
Trelford Mills was VAR official
Graham Scott.
Taylor himself is very far from
blameless however; an eccentric performance seeing some obvious
bookings missed and a succession of soft decisions made.
This was Taylor's third Newcastle game of the
season following from the 3-1 PL win at
Nottingham Forest and 3-0 PL home victory over Aston Villa.
VAR was
used at all eight
Fifth Round ties and
referees announced decisions after reviewed incidents, as was the case in
the latter stages of the Carabao Cup.
Semi-Automated Offside Technology was also in operation (except at
Championship side Preston North End) the first time this system has been used in competitive matches in
English football.
Stats:
Alexander Isak now
has 22 goals in all competitions for the season, three less than his
total in 2023/24.
Newcastle were eliminated from the FA Cup during extra time for the
first time since the 2020/21 season - a 0-2 loss at Arsenal in the

This defeat means that Newcastle will have no game between Sunday
March 16th (Liverpool at Wembley in the Carabao Cup Final) and
Wednesday April 2nd (Brentford at home in the Premier League.
A warm weather training camp in Saudi Arabia is planned after the
Carabao Cup Final for those players who won't be away on
international duty.
The possibility of a postponement for the Ipswich PL home game on
Saturday April 26th remains while they are in the FA Cup - that's
also semi-final weekend.
And finally, our exit from the competition means that the PL visit
to Arsenal on or around Sunday May 18th will now go ahead - the FA
Cup Final takes place on Saturday May 17th, with no PL fixtures that
day.

Comeback
complete
Wolves U18s 2 Newcastle U18s 4
Newcastle's
U18 side were in the Black Country on Saturday, facing Wolves at
their Compton Park HQ.
United came close to opening the scoring after 13 minutes, Kacey Wooster
almost catching home 'keeper George Hardy off his line with a lob from
distance.
Making his first start at this level, Newcastle's Kyle Fitzgerald then
pinged a shot off the outside of the post from just inside the area with 24
minutes played.
The home side went ahead six minutes before half time, when a snap shot from
Mateus Mane ended up in the bottom corner of Will Anderson's goal.
A smart stop from the visiting 'keeper at his near post then prevented
striker Mane from doubling the lead just before the interval.
Winless in their last nine league games, Wolves went 2-0 up five minutes
after the resumption when a corner kick fell to Mason Stevens. His initial shot
was blocked by Anderson but Ollie Stafford converted the rebound.
That two goal advantage lasted less than 10 minutes though, before Jake
Durrant's cross from the United left was headed back across goal by Kyle
Fitzgerald for Alex O'Donovan to fire home from barely a yard out.
And the lead was wiped out with 12 minutes to play, O'Donovan setting Mo
Waddani free on the left and his centre slotted home by Fitzgerald - his
first Toon goal.
Waddani then thought he'd put his side ahead for the first time in the
match, only to see it ruled out by a raised assistant's flag.
Within seconds though the ball was in the Wolves net again, Wooster rounding
the 'keeper and Bjorn Marwa getting the final touch to send it into his own
net.
That came in the 85th minute and it was 4-2 soon after; Fitzgerald's driving
run doing the damage and Wooster making no mistake with his third goal in
two games.
Team: Anderson, Bloomer, Durrant, Johnson, Epia, Cogdon, Fitzgerald,
Harper, Wooster (Yeutembip 90+2), O'Donovan, Waddani (Lucas 90+2).
Subs n/u: Holland, Ndiweni, Gilligan.
Booked: Epia
The Magpies were forced to make changes from the side that defeated
Liverpool 3-1 last weekend, Logan Watts promoted to the U21s and Sam Alabi
and Michael Mills away on international duty with England.
That also resulted in a very youthful bench, with a debut at
this level for 15 year-old defender Lesecond Yeutembip, fresh from making
his England U15 bow.

On This Day in History |
|
2nd March |
|
Born Or Died:
1897 John Henry Hill born, Hetton-Le-Hole. (1928-31)

Centre half who had begun his career with Durham City before
moving on to play for Plymouth Argyle and Burnley.
Jack was a current England international when Newcastle paid £8,100 to bring
him from Turf Moor early in the 1928/29 season.
He added four more caps to his tally while at Newcastle but his time at SJP
ended abruptly after a dispute with the club's Directors.
Transferred to Bradford City in the summer of 1931, he was soon on the move
again to Hull City - later serving as manager and scout.
His final involvement with football came on the commercial side with
Scarborough after which he retired, moving to the Clydeside town of
Helensburgh. He died in 1972.

1901 James Naylor
born, High Crompton,
Lancashire. (1930-32)

A £4,000 signing from Huddersfield Town in the summer of 1930,
right half Jimmy was part of the Terriers side beaten 2-0 by Arsenal in
the FA Cup final earlier that year.
Debuting in a 2-1 opening day defeat at Sheffield Wednesday, he was initially
preferred to Roddie Mackenzie but ultimately failed to dislodge the Magpies
veteran.
Joining Manchester City in October 1932, he soon returned to first club Oldham
Athletic on loan. Later spells came with Macclesfield Town, Nelson and Wigan
Athletic.
Jimmy passed away in August 1983.

1913 John Kelly born, Hetton-le-Hole.
(1933-35)

Forward who began his career at Hetton Juniors, joining
Burnley as an amateur in 1930 (he also found employment as a butcher).
Turning professional at Turf Moor, Jack played for the first team until an
exchange deal with Newcastle during April 1933 - Tom Miller going the
opposite way.
Signed as cover for Jack Allen, Kelly's senior opportunities were limited
but he was a prolific scorer at reserve team level.
Debuting in a 1-1 home draw with Derby County in September 1933, Jack's only
first team goal came in a 2-5 to Brentford at Gallowgate almost exactly a
year later.
Joining Leeds United in a £1,150 deal in February 1935, he moved again to Birmingham
in 1938.
Kelly was on the books of Bury during the
abortive 1939/40 season that was abandoned after three games to due to the outbreak of
World War II.
Returning to live in his hometown of Hetton-le-Hole, his death was confirmed
during 2000.

1945 David Ford
born, Sheffield.
(1969-71)

Winger who began his
career at Sheffield
Wednesday and moved
to Tyneside in
December 1969,
Jackie Sinclair
going to
Hillsborough in a
part-exchange deal.
Capped twice at
England U23 level
(one of which came
against Scotland at
SJP in 1967), David
made a scoring debut
for the Magpies in a
4-0 home win over
Ipswich.
However, he faced
competition for the
number 11 shirt from
Alan Foggon and
David Young and left
after barely a year.
Another
part-exchange deal
took him from SJP to
Bramall Lane (along
with goalkeeper John
Hope) in January
1971 and brought
striker John Tudor
to Gallowgate.
David moved on to
Halifax Town in 1973
and following his
retirement worked as
a plumber in the
Sheffield area. He
was also involved in
the licensed trade.

1947 Alex Reid
born, Glasgow,
Scotland.
(1971-73)

On the books at Ibrox, although he only appeared twice for the
Rangers first team, winger Alex made his name at Dundee United and faced
Newcastle when the two sides met in the 1969/70 Fairs Cup.
Arriving at SJP in October 1971 with Ian Mitchell going to Tannadice in
exchange, Alex made his Magpies debut soon after in a 2-1 home victory over
Nottingham Forest.
Never a regular starter, Reid faded out of the first team picture in the
1972/73 season and was moved on to Greenock Morton for a fee of £20K in
October 1973.
A return to Dundee United came in 1975 but he was soon on the move again,
joining Ayr United. However a knee injury caused him to retire just a few
months later, in 1977.
Reid later emigrated
to Canada where he
settled in the
Vancouver area. It
was reported in 1998
that he took his own
life.

1979 Damien Duff
born, Ballyboden,
Ireland.
(2006-09)

Republic of Ireland international winger signed as a teenager by Blackburn Rovers, debuting
for the senior side in May 1997.
Winning a League Cup winners medal in 2001, Duff left Ewood
Park for Chelsea for £17m in summer 2003 - a year
after his headline grabbing displays at the World
Cup Finals.
However, his time at Stamford Bridge was affected by injury
- although that didn't stop him scoring against us twice and
collecting two Premiership winners' medals.
Declared surplus to requirements, a decent- looking £5m deal
was agreed and he moved to SJP in July 2006, amid claims
that both Spurs and Liverpool had tabled bids.
Duff's first appearance came in a home friendly against PSV
Eindhoven, his full United debut following in an Intertoto
Cup tie against Ventspils played in Riga.
And when he scored
his first goal in a win at West Ham soon after, the future
looking bright for Damien and United.
A damaged cartilage
at Arsenal in November sidelined him for a month however,
and he missed another six weeks after just a single comeback
game.
Returning in late January 2007, Duff showed little as Glenn
Roeder's side under-performed in the League and exited the
UEFA Cup at the hands of AZ Alkmaar.
An innocuous-looking knock during a defeat at Portsmouth
that April then kept him out of action for eight months -
although many of those present initially believed that he
just wanted to come off.
Duff's next comeback coincided with end of Sam Allardyce's
reign - with only his second toon goal against Stoke City at
SJP on the night of Kevin Keegan's return.
Reaching the end of
that season without further incident, a much reduced pace
brought some criticism of his fitness.
The benefits of a
full pre-season became apparent though in July 2008, when
Damien
hit a hat trick in pre-season at Hartlepool and looked leaner and sharper.
Again though injury
struck and he missed a month after taking a whack on the
knee in the home win over Bolton - only our second
competitive fixture of the season.
By the time Duff
returned, Kevin Keegan had made way for Chris Hughton and within a couple of games Joe Kinnear had turned
up.
Netting in front of the new United boss in a 2-2 draw at
Everton, further goals
followed against Spurs and West Bromwich Albion- before
injury again put him out of action in February 2009.
Returning for the final weeks of the season, Duff played in
all eight games Alan Shearer managed; some at emergency left back.
However, his chief contribution during was to
unwittingly deflect Gareth Barry's shot
past Steve Harper in the final game of the season at Aston
Villa - sealing our relegation fate.
Duff went on the record to claim that he was prepared
to play in the Championship for Newcastle, as he had done
following his relegation with Blackburn in 1998.
However, after just one game - during which he scored our
first goal outside the top flight since Andy Cole - he
signed for Fulham in a reported £2.5m deal.
While Michael Owen was pilloried for not pulling his
weight at SJP, seeing Duff cavorting round like a spring
lamb and scoring goals for fun at The Cottagers stuck in
the throat of this Toon fan.
However, his departure and the consequent reduction in the
wage bill/fee collected allowed Chris Hughton to retain
other high earners in his squad, to good effect.
Inevitably he scored the only goal of the game at Craven
Cottage in 2010/11 when he faced his former employers, away
fans' boos once again a precursor to the strike.
Winning the penalty for Fulham's equaliser in January 2012 -
a game they won 5-2 - that December saw yet another example
of Toon fans abusing Duff and being instantly repaid, when
he took a free kick from which the Cottagers netted their
winner.
You'd think we'd learn, wouldn't you?
Duff finally exited from Fulham following relegation from
the Premier League in May 2014 and agreed a one year deal to
play for Australian side Melbourne City.
However, serious calf and ligament damage sidelined
him and raised doubts about whether he'd be able to continue
playing.
Returning from Australia, Damien joined League of Ireland
side Shamrock Rovers on an 18 month deal, pledging to donate
all of his wages to charity.
After just nine games though, he called time on his playing
career in December 2015.
Coaching roles with Rovers - initially the U15s and then
later assisting the first team - followed, in addition to a
youth role with the Ireland national team.
Recruited by Brendan Rodgers to oversee Celtic reserves in
late 2018, he was soon promoted to the first team staff
following the replacement of Rodgers by Neil Lennon.
Named as assistant coach to Republic of Ireland head
coach Stephen Kenny in April 2020, Damien quit his Celtic post
soon after and left the Ireland role in January
2021.
Appointed manager of LOI side Shelbourne in
November 2021, he guided them to the title in 2024.

It's reported that this game failed to

That was due in part to the decision by some Newcastle fans to attend the
