FA Cup:
Newcastle 0 VAR 2

Newcastle  1  Brighton  2
  (aet)

Newcastle crashed out of the FA Cup in extra-time after the intervention of VAR saw Anthony Gordon sent off and Fabian Schar's late winner ruled out at St. James' Park on Sunday afternoon.

Gordon will now miss the Carabao Cup Final unless his red card is overturned on appeal and Schar's fabulous volley was ruled to be millimetres offside thanks to the newly-adopted semi-automated technology.

Had both incidents happened in a previous round of this competition, Newcastle would be quarter-finalists and Gordon would be available to face Liverpool at Wembley, having missed the 2023 final when he was cup-tied.

As it is though, Eddie Howe now faces a repeat of the scenario two years ago when a straight red card for Nick Pope in the Premier League resulted in his suspension for the Carabao Cup Final.

The Magpies boss also has to contend with a team looking lethargic and uninspired for long periods of matches, something that sadly seems to be in our collective DNA when counting down to Wembley trips.

Six changes from the side beaten at Anfield in midweek confirmed our level of intent, but the intensity just wasn't there despite Alexander Isak's 22nd minute penalty getting the hosts off to a decent start.

The Swede then burst through to ripple the Leazes End net again on 32 minutes, but was rightly denied by a raised offside flag and VAR confirmation.

The visitors equalised just before half-time when former Magpie Yankuba Minteh - who had earlier given away the penalty by fouling Tino Livramento - hit an effort that flew in off Kieran Trippier's boot to level the tie.

Clear chances were rare at either end after the break, substitute Joe Willock missing a header in front of goal that should have put United ahead.

However, it looked like Fabian Schar had taken his side into the last eight when he volleyed in a 93rd minute free-kick until VAR ruled the top of Schar's torso to be marginally offside, halting celebrations and ensuring that an extra 30 minutes would be played.

By that point both sides were down to ten men with Gordon and Tariq Lamptey shown red cards by referee Anthony Taylor.

The whistle had gone for an offside long before Gordon and Jan Paul van Hecke tussled for the ball towards the Strawberry Corner after 83 minutes, the Dutchman throwing himself to the ground clutching his face.

That prompted VAR to tell Taylor to show Gordon a red card for an innocuous two-handed shove on the side of van Hecke's face
. The referee was clearly taking advice in his ear after giving the offside against Isak and preparing for the restart.

Newcastle will inevitably appeal against the sending off but with contact clearly made by the brainless Gordon, the decision seems likely to stand.

Albion's red followed eight minutes later; Lamptey shown a second yellow for a foul on Jacob Murphy that resulted in the free kick that Schar volleyed home in vain.

Both sides had made their full quota of replacements before extra-time and with Joao Pedro limping for Albion, United looked more likely to find a winner.

That changed when Albion substitutes Solly March and Danny Welbeck combined in the 114th minute; the 34 year-old lifting the ball over Martin Dubravka at the Leazes End with the ailing Livramento playing him onside.

Former mackem striker Welbeck also struck the winner in the Premier League meeting here last October but we were our own worst enemies again, sloppy in possession and ultimately outsmarted by mediocre opposition.

Pushed into the forward line, Dan Burn fired a fierce shot across goal that could have taken the tie to penalties had it hit the target, but the damage was done earlier on another calamitous afternoon.

With Isak and Trippier limping off, Livramento ailing and Lewis Hall already sidelined, this defeat ended up as a double cup disaster for United - crashing out of the FA Cup and left short-handed for the Carabao Cup.

Full match report to follow.

BHAFC: Verbruggen, Lamptey, Van Hecke, Webster, Estupinan (Wieffer 80), Baleba (Gomez 69), Hinshelwood, Minteh (Gruda 69), Rutter (Welbeck 80), Mitoma (March 90+1), Joao Pedro.
Subs n/u: McGill, Adingra, Ayari, Cashin.

Sent off: Lamptey 90+1 - second yellow.

Booked:
Lamptey, Webster, Baleba, Gomez.

Goal
s: Minteh 44, Welbeck 114.

Crowd: 51,566. Albion sold around 1,100 tickets.

Among the crowd was former favourite Tino Asprilla.

Eddie Howe said after the game:

"It's a tough one for us to take. It was very bitty, a real physical game for us.

"It had everything with the red cards as well and extra-time. We thought we'd won it at the end.

"We had a couple of players feeling the effects of the game. Tino (Livramento) ended up not being able to contribute so, in some respects, we were down to nine.

"I thought the other substitutes did really well and gave us a bit more energy, but it was a really tough, physical game for both teams.

"We could have done better, of course we could.

"I’m desperately disappointed to have lost. It was a tough contest, both teams gave everything, there were a lot of emotions.

"Stuttering is probably a good way to put it. I don’t know whether the cup final has become a negative distraction in our performances. I don’t sense that from around the training ground, but certainly our level of performance, from where it was a few weeks ago, has dropped and individuals’ levels within that have dropped as well. So we’ve got to try and pick everyone back up and get us back to our best levels.

"It’s not a great day… but it could have been. If Fabby’s onside by the shortest of distances, we’re sitting here with an amazing win and saying, ‘What character from the players’. So you always have to put it in context and we can’t overreact. I certainly can’t overreact — and I won’t.”

On the red card:

"I’ve only seen it live, so it’s very difficult to form an opinion. From what I saw on the pitch, I don’t know what Anthony’s intention was, but I’m sure it wasn’t to harm the player or get the red card.

"In that moment, I don’t know quite what’s happened, so I have to review it properly before forming my opinion.

"To be honest, I wasn’t aware initially
(that it would rule Gordon out of the final). My focus was so absorbed on the game and trying to win. If that is the case, then I’m desperately disappointed for him and for the team.

"Knowing the player, I know there’s no malice intended there. Of course, we’ll reserve the right to put in an appeal. If we analyse the incident and feel there’s grounds for that, then we will do it without hesitation.

"I don’t think you’ll allow me for it not to be a distraction, to a degree. But I think it’s most important what we discuss internally. We’ll review the incident first, then we’ll have a discussion with Anthony to make sure that he’s okay.

"If Anthony is missing the game, then of course that would be a big blow to us. But as always, when someone suffers a misfortune in that way, it’s someone else’s opportunity. That’s what we have a squad for, and that’s what we have very good players for.

"We have to look at it that way, and I’m sure Anthony would want us to look at it that way. I’m sure, in his absence, he would want us to carry on, be really strong and try to win the game."

On Alexander Isak:

"Alex just felt a bit of general tightness. I don’t think it was an injury, it was just general tightness, but we felt as though he had to come off."

On Tino Livramento:

"Tino was clearly struggling, although I think it was cramp more than an injury. He was limited, and that limited us a lot, although I thought the players around him covered that really well.

On Kieran Trippier:

"Kieran felt his back, so we were navigating a lot of problems through that game that we hope don’t have long-term consequences for us because we have such a small squad.”

On Sven Botman:

"Sven was close, but he did light training
(on Saturday) and didn’t feel 100% confident in his body. So, we decided not to risk him. We still hope that he can play a part either in our next game or the game after.

"We’re desperate to get him back fit because he’s such a big player, but we couldn’t take the risk with him if he wasn’t 100% fit.”

On Lewis Hall:

"It’s an ankle problem that Lewis picked up after the Liverpool game. He didn’t really recover well. He felt pain, so he had a scan and now he’s been to see a specialist.

"We’re awaiting further news. There’s no timescale on that at the moment.”

Referee: Anthony Taylor (Cheshire).

Taylor again had a hand in Newcastle's Carabao Cup Final chances, adding Gordon's red to the one he gave Nick Pope against Liverpool before the 2023 Final.

Although he gave the decisions, the 21st century version of Trelford Mills was VAR official Graham Scott.

Taylor himself is very far from blameless however; an eccentric performance seeing some obvious bookings missed and a succession of soft decisions made.

This was Taylor's third Newcastle game of the season following from the 3-1 PL win at Nottingham Forest and 3-0  PL home victory over Aston Villa.

VAR was
used at all eight Fifth Round ties and referees announced decisions after reviewed incidents, as was the case in the latter stages of the Carabao Cup.

Semi-Automated Offside Technology was also in operation (except at
Championship side Preston North End) the first time this system has been used in competitive matches in English football.

Stats:

Alexander Isak now has 22 goals in all competitions for the season, three less than his total in 2023/24.

Newcastle were eliminated from the FA Cup during extra time for the first time since the 2020/21 season - a 0-2 loss at Arsenal in the Third Round.

A warm weather training camp in Saudi Arabia is planned after the Carabao Cup Final for those players who won't then be away on international duty.

The PL home game against Ipswich Town on Saturday April 26th - semi-final weekend - goes ahead as announced, the Tractor Boys exiting in the Fifth Round.

And finally, our exit from the competition means that the PL visit to Arsenal on or around Sunday May 18th will now go ahead - the FA Cup Final takes place on Saturday May 17th, with no PL fixtures that day.

U21s:
Comeback complete

Wolves U18s  2  Newcastle U18s  4

Newcastle's U18 side were in the Black Country on Saturday, facing Wolves at their Compton Park HQ.

United came close to opening the scoring after 13 minutes, Kacey Wooster almost catching home 'keeper George Hardy off his line with a lob from distance.

Making his first start at this level, Newcastle's Kyle Fitzgerald then pinged a shot off the outside of the post from just inside the area with 24 minutes played.

The home side went ahead six minutes before half time, when a snap shot from Mateus Mane ended up in the bottom corner of Will Anderson's goal.

A smart stop from the visiting 'keeper at his near post then prevented striker Mane from doubling the lead just before the interval.

Winless in their last nine league games, Wolves went 2-0 up five minutes after the resumption when a corner kick fell to Mason Stevens. His initial shot was blocked by Anderson but Ollie Stafford converted the rebound.

That two goal advantage lasted less than 10 minutes though, before Jake Durrant's cross from the United left was headed back across goal by Kyle Fitzgerald for Alex O'Donovan to fire home from barely a yard out.

And the lead was wiped out with 12 minutes to play, O'Donovan setting Mo Waddani free on the left and his centre slotted home by Fitzgerald - his first Toon goal.

Waddani then thought he'd put his side ahead for the first time in the match, only to see it ruled out by a raised assistant's flag.

Within seconds though the ball was in the Wolves net again, Wooster rounding the 'keeper and Bjorn Marwa getting the final touch to send it into his own net.

That came in the 85th minute and it was 4-2 soon after; Fitzgerald's driving run doing the damage and Wooster making no mistake with his third goal in two games.

Team: Anderson, Bloomer, Durrant, Johnson, Epia, Cogdon, Fitzgerald, Harper, Wooster (Yeutembip 90+2), O'Donovan, Waddani (Lucas 90+2).
Subs n/u:
Holland, Ndiweni, Gilligan.

Booked: Epia

The Magpies were forced to make changes from the side that defeated Liverpool 3-1 last weekend, Logan Watts promoted to the U21s and Sam Alabi and Michael Mills away on international duty with England.

That also resulted in a very youthful bench, with a debut at this level for 15 year-old defender Lesecond Yeutembip, fresh from making his England U15 bow.

Another feat of endurance from GW

The Mail report that Newcastle are looking at another long haul pre-season trip this coming summer, with previous talk of the USA now dismissed and a return to the Far East said to be under active discussion.

Hong Kong is among the destinations mentioned, specifically  the Kai Tak Sports Park in Kowloon - a brand new 50,000 capacity venue opening imminently.

Sunday saw England defeat Denmark 7-3 at Pinatar, with the Magpies trio all named on the bench. MIlls definitely got some pitch time and scored once.

England's concluding game take place on Wednesday at Pinatar, against France.

On This Day in History
3rd March

Born Or Died:

1886 James Edmundson Raine born, Newcastle (1903,1904-06).

Right-sided forward who was on amateur forms at SJP, having played football while studying at both Harrogate and Sheffield.

Briefly with Newcastle in 1903, a longer association with the club came the following year, after having played one senior game in the colours of Sheffield United.

Debuting in place of Jackie Rutherford in a 1-0 loss at Middlesbrough in March 1906, the player known as Joe featured in three more games that season - netting his only goal in the last of those, a 3-0 home victory over Blackburn Rovers.

Later appearing in the Football League for Sunderland and Glossop North End, Raine also played for Bohemians (Newcastle), Reading, Stalybridge Rovers and South Shields.

Playing cricket for Benwell and Northumberland county and also rugby for Percy Park, he won international honours with the England amateur football team.

Living in Jesmond after ending his playing days and managed the Raine family steelworks on the banks of the Tyne, Jimmy rose to the rank of Major in the Durham Light Infantry during WW1.

His unexpected death came while visiting the Swiss ski resort of Davos in September 1928.

An obituary published in The Journal referred to him as a "brave soldier, sportsman and good employer."

1903 Duncan Hutchison born, Kelty, Scotland. (1929-32)

"Hurricane Hutch" is more revered by the supporters of Dundee United than Newcastle, thanks to an association with the Tannadice club that spanned some six decades.

Signed from Dunfermline in 1927, his sale to The Magpies two years later for £4,050 led to protests and match boycotts among Dundee United fans.

Hutch partially reproduced the goalscoring form that had brought him to Tyneside, but within a year of his arrival had seen fellow Scotsman Hughie Gallacher leave United - and he proved to be a tough act to follow.

After spells at Derby County and Hull City, Hutchison re-signed for Dundee United in 1935 and played on until 1939, running "The United Bar" in the city upon his retirement.

Appointed to the Board at Tannadice in 1953, he remained in post until his death in 1973 - serving for a time as their Chairman.

1933 Stewart Mitchell born, Glasgow, Scotland. (1953-63)

Goalkeeper signed from the Govan-based Benburb club who acted as understudy at various times to Ronnie Simpson, Bryan Harvey and Dave Hollins.

His debut saw United draw 3-3 at Preston and he also conceded four goals in each of his next three outings.

Mitchell returned to Scotland with Third Lanark as part of the Dave Hilley deal.

However, his transfer didn't go through until some eight months after Hilley's arrival, with Stewart eventually moving to Cathkin Park in lieu of the proceeds of a promised friendly match against United that was never played.

Forced to quit the game in 1965 due to injury, Mitchell was present at Ibrox to see United's 0-0 draw in the Fairs Cup four years later.

Living in the town of Hamilton following his playing retirement, Stewart worked in the financial services sector. He passed away in January 2023.

1990 Emmanuel Riviere, born, Le Lamentin, Martinique (2014-17)

United's fifth close season signing of summer 2014 saw this alleged striker arrive from AS Monaco for an undisclosed fee.

Riviere had left his home on the Caribbean island of Martinique - an overseas territory of France - to join St.Etienne during 2005.

A senior debut came in April 2009 and his first selection for France at U21 level the following year saw him line up with future SJP colleague Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

Making a £4.7m switch to Toulouse in July 2011, he played with Moussa Sissoko there and was an U21 colleague of both Massadio Haidara and Remy Cabella.

A mid-season move to Monaco (then in the second tier of French football) in January 2013 cost of £3m and he scored four times to help them win the title and promotion.

Emmanuel then netted thirteen times in the 2013/14 season (ten in Ligue 1) including a hat trick against Montpellier as Monaco finished runners up to PSG.

Joining United on their pre-season tour of New Zealand, he made a scoring bow in a 4-0 win over Sydney United in Dunedin.

Riviere struggled in his first season, scoring just twice in 30 outings - in the League Cup at Crystal Palace and at QPR in the Premier League, the latter something of a fluke.

Injury then sidelined him until January 2016, with a trio of unproductive outings under Steve McClaren and three unused substitute selections by the incoming Rafa Benitez.

Shipped off to Spaniards Real Osasuna on a season-long loan during August 2016,  Riviere failed to find the net in 17 appearances as they were relegated.

The misfit was permanently jettisoned a year later though, securing his release from United before signing for French side Metz.

Rather improbably he marked his debut with a goal against Paris St. Germain - before reality intervened and he missed an open goal. PSG ultimately won the game 5-1.

Released at the end of the 2018/19 season, the free agent secured a deal with Italian Serie B side Cosenza where he was joined by our season-long loanee, Achraf Lazaar.

Riviere left Cosenza and joined Serie A side Crotone in September 2020, signing a two-year contract. However, this was terminated by the club in October 2021 for what they deemed "serious misconduct" after failing to return to the club.

1928
There was a memorable reserve bow for centre forward John Hailes, who scored six times in a 9-2 defeat of Hartlepools United in the North Eastern League.

The 20 year-old native of Hetton netted five of his six goals in the opening 45 minutes at Gallowgate.

This was the most recent FA Cup meeting between the sides until 2024.

Five days after their League Cup Final loss at Wembley to Manchester City, Newcastle returned to league action.

Micky Burns handed both points to the Potters on a plate when he directed a harmless-looking back pass beyond Mick Mahoney.

Mahoney's opposite number Peter Shilton then performed heroics to keep a clean sheet - including two stops to deny young substitute Rocky Hudson a first senior goal.

1976 United announced the double signing of Graham Oates and Roger Jones from Gordon Lee's former club Blackburn Rovers.

In their first fixture since the 1-4 home derby loss, United repaid the faith of those fans who returned to the scene of the crime, although the crowd was almost 20,000 less than the mackem game.

Those who were tempted back saw Mick Martin net his first goal for the club, his shot deflecting off the foot of the Addicks goalkeeper and trickling into the Leazes net.

Fulham boss Malcolm Macdonald gave a nervous wave to visiting supporters on the open Putney End - clearly unsure of whether he was being cheered or jeered by his former fans.

United wore the legendary shiny skin-tight silver kit on a day when the Craven Cottage pitch had more sand on it than Druridge Bay.

David Unsworth netted at both ends, putting United ahead when Toffees goalkeeper Paul Gerrard pushed out Alan Shearer's cross and the ball rebounded off the Everton player's boot.

The defender atoned by converting a penalty kick harshly awarded by referee David Elleray against Steve Caldwell, after Kevin Campbell threw himself to the floor amid hopeful shouts from home fans at the Gwladys Street End.

After a 1-1 draw in Oslo, this was a relatively comfortable passage into the last 16 of the competition, although Erik Hagen's equaliser initially caused some consternation.

Shola Ameobi's first goal was scored with his first touches after appearing as a half time replacement for the hamstrung Craig Bellamy.

And the night was memorable for Martin Brittain, Bobby Robson giving the reserve midfielder a senior debut when substituting him for the underwhelming Michael Bridges.

2005 Newcastle's Reserves lost their 100% record at Morecambe's Christie Park as they drew 1-1 with Blackburn's second string.

Charles N'Zogbia shot United ahead only for Jerome Watt to bring Rovers back level when he squeezed the ball past the bulky frame of Tony Caig in the Toon goal.

For United it was a case
of two points lost, as they squandered the best chances in what was a game of few chances.

At the other end Shay Given had one of his quietest days with the visitors offering little or no attacking threat.

However, Obafemi Martins and Kieron Dyer couldn't make the vital breakthrough, while Glenn Roeder delayed bringing Antoine Sibierski off the bench until near the end.

On-loan Oguchi Onyewu partnered Titus Bramble in central defence, with an unusual full back pairing of Nobby Solano on the right and Steven Taylor filling in on the other side.

2008 An own goal and two late efforts from Andy Carroll saw off Everton's Reserves at SJP, as Adam Sadler's second string ended a three-match winless run in some style.

2012 United confirmed that both Tim Krul and Fabricio Coloccini had signed contract extensions, keeping them at SJP until the summer of 2017 and 2016 respectively.

2012 What proved to be the only senior competitive appearance in English football for reserve winger Samuel Adjei came whilst loaned to League One Hartlepool United.

Introduced as a second half substitute in a 1-1 home draw with MK Dons, the Swedish winger sustained an injury that forced his hasty return to Tyneside.

2014 Newcastle Reserves made it five league and cup losses in succession, beaten 1-2 by basement side Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Rolando Aarons netted.

Despite arriving at Anfield on a four match unbeaten run, what followed for Rafa Benitez's side was sadly predictable.

Magpies Captain Jamaal Lascelles ended up on the field at full time having got away with two loud penalty shouts and what seemed a certain red card late on, when he barged over Mo Salah on the edge of the box.

Miggy Almiron's first half double helped his side into the FA Cup Quarter Finals as United
saw off the Championship leaders.

But once again they made heavy weather of what should have been a comfortable cup victory after going three up through Valentino Lazaro just after half-time.

Two late goals and a last gasp penalty shout had Steve Bruce and
5,000 travelling fans' hearts in their mouths.

2021
The Mail newspaper reported that: "
Steve Bruce and Matt Ritchie were involved in a sensational training ground showdown in which the Newcastle boss physically confronted the winger and barged into him after being called a 'coward' by the player."

The incident came 72 hours after a 1-1 home draw with Wolves, when Bruce had blamed Ritchie for not passing on instructions after
arriving from the bench - result
ing in Wolves scoring.

Various media claims of tensions at the training ground emerged at the time, notably the reaction of Karl Darlow to discovering via the press that he'd lost his place in the side.
