Second string
success
Boro U21s 0 Newcastle U21s 2
 Newcastle's
U21 side continued their pursuit of a PL2 play-off spot on Friday evening,
scoring a goal in each half to win at Bishop Auckland's Heritage Park.
The visitors had the ball in the net in the 14th minute when Sean Neave
tapped home after Nathan Fisher blocked Garang Kuol's shot, only to be
deemed offside.
United did go ahead on 27 minutes when Neave was fouled in the box and
tucked away his spot kick away via a post.
The black and whites should have gone in at half time two goals to the good,
had Kuol not taken Scott Bailey's pass and advanced into the area before
dragging his shot wide of the far post.
However their second of the night arrived just two minutes after the
restart, substitute Ben Parkinson marking his return from injury by firing
home - Alfie Harrison setting up the shooting chance.
Victory was achieved with little threat to the visitors, two late chances
falling to Kuol but Fisher equal on both occasions.
Team: Harris, Shahar (R.Powell 59), Charlton, Finneran, Heffernan, C.Thompson,
Turner-Cooke, Bailey (Parkinson 46), Neave (Palmer 59), Al.Harrison (Stanton
72), Kuol.
Sub n/u: Jones.
Booked: Turner-Cooke, R.Powell
MFC: Fisher, Patterson-Powell, Samuels, Lindo, Tawiah (Woodhouse
73), Johnson, Lennon (A,Palmer 66), Stott, Finch (Nkrumah 66), Willis (Coulson
66), Acheampong.
Sub n/u: Elliot.
Booked: Johnson
Referee: Dale Baines
(This has been another GW production)
Victory lifted United up to eleventh in the 26 team league with three games
remaining. The top 16 will contest the end-of-season knockout
phase.
PS: The Stott in the home line-up was Jack: we're unsure whether that's
Donald or Davey's lad..... 2025/26:
ST price
rises
now confirmed
Thursday saw NUFC confirm 2025/26
season ticket prices and while some other PL clubs have announced a freeze,
a 5% increase on standard adult prices will apply at SJP - hardly a
shock given current PSR pressures, but a further unwanted drain on resources
for supporters.
Season ticket holders who were on the long-term price freeze deals that have
all now expired will see 2025/26 ticket prices increase to the standard
pricing level.
As an example, adult 1892 Club tickets will increase from £635 (£33.42 per
game) to £1,083 (£57 per game).
There's no increase in junior ticket prices again and the current range of
concessionary prices will continue to be offered - that's in contrast to
several other PL clubs who have axed price categories such as Young Persons.
A new 12 month interest-free direct debit schedule will appear in place of
the previous eight month option.
ST holders currently paying via Direct Debit will be contacted by email to
confirm payment details and auto-renewal will apply.
Other ST holders can renew their seats online via the club website from Mon
10.03.2025 @ 10am until Fri 21.03.2025 @ 5pm.
(Emails sent out to ST holders who pay in a single instalment reference a
payment date of late April).
Find full details online here Domestic
home cup scheme ticket pricing will remain unchanged from the 2024/25 rates
as follows: CC:
£20 & £25 adults / £10 & £15 others
FA: £30 & £35 adults / £15 & £20 others
Details of how to join the cup schemes and the latest dates to do so is yet
to be announced.
In the event that European qualification is achieved, no indication as to
the ticket prices has been given.
There's no mention of what memberships or single PL game prices will be next season for
those purchasing via ballots or member general sale.
PS: There's no mention of any change in current season ticket policy for new
applicants - with none available to purchase and no mention of any queueing
system.
PPS: There's also nothing to suggest that the rumoured relocation of away
sections will actually become a reality, with consequent knock-on effects
for home fans.
2024/25:
West Ham
(a)

The Magpies return to Premier League action
on Monday evening against the Hammers.
Kick-off at the London Stadium is 8pm
live on Sky Sports and Newcastle's 3,000 tickets are sold out.
FAO anyone using the away ticket transfer scheme, at the request of West Ham,
this will close at 9am on Monday -
earlier than usual.
Team: Speaking
to the media on Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed that Alexander Isak was fit and
training.
Tino Livramento and Kieran Trippier were also reportedly seen participating
in training.
Anthony Gordon begins a three game suspension, while Lewis Hall
and Sven Botman miss out due to injury.
Jamaal Lascelles remains a long-term absentee.
Botman will undergo surgery on a knee
problem that means he'll miss the remainder of this season.
The Dutch defender returned to action in January after nine months on the
sidelines, but after five appearances failed to feature in any of the
last five games due to a separate knee issue that now requires intervention.
Hall
will miss the rest of the season after a
scan confirmed that he broke a bone in his foot during the Liverpool game.
No appeal against the dismissal of Anthony
Gordon versus Brighton & Hove Albion was lodged, meaning that he'll miss the Carabao Cup Final in addition to PL games
versus West Ham and Brentford before being eligible to face Leicester City
on April 7th.
Joelinton goes into this game on nine PL bookings for the season and will
serve a two match ban if he receives a tenth yellow card in any of the next
five PL fixtures.
The only other player anywhere near a ban is Dan Burn, who has picked up
seven so far.
Needless to say, a straight red card for any Newcastle player at West Ham
would rule them out of Wembley.
Coral rate this game as follows:
NUFC win 6/5
The draw 13/5
WHUFC win 21/10

WHUFC: Lucas Paqueta is available for selection and Vladimir
Coufal is doubtful. Michail Antonio, Crysencio Summerville and Niclas
Fullkrug are out.
Graham Potter's side are bidding for a third consecutive PL win following a 1-0
victory at Arsenal and 2-0 home success against Leicester City.
An FA Cup exit to Aston Villa meant that they have a 11 day gap between
games before hosting Newcastle.
On home territory this season, the Hammers have lost seven, won five and
drawn two. They have recorded just two clean sheets during those
games.

Salisbury - first Toon game of the season for the Lancashire whistler, last
seen taking charge of the 2-2 Premier League home draw with Bournemouth in

Alexander Isak is one strike away from becoming the first Magpie to hit
20 PL goals in successive seasons.
He's netted five times against West Ham for Newcastle in the PL so far, a
total exceeded only by the half dozen he's hit against both Spurs and Nottingham
Forest.
The next three point return for
Newcastle on the road will be their 150th PL away win. 11 of the
first 149 have come at West Ham, with only Spurs (12) proving to be
more fertile ground for the Magpies.

PS: Regarding
SJP, the financial report doesn't give any clues as to the club's
intentions, saying only that they "continue to explore
a range of options in relation to potential enhancement or expansion of St
James' Park or the development of a new stadium."
Similarly there's no clarity on whether an enhanced training ground or a
move to a new site is pending.

Defeat means that Newcastle have no game between Sunday
March 16th (Liverpool at Wembley in the Carabao Cup Final) and
Wednesday April 2nd (Brentford at home in the Premier League).
A warm weather training camp in Saudi Arabia is planned after the
Carabao Cup Final for those players who won't then be away on
international duty.
The PL home game against Ipswich Town on
Saturday April 26th - semi-final weekend - goes ahead as announced,
the Tractor Boys exiting in the Fifth Round.
And finally, our exit from the competition means that the PL visit
to Arsenal on or around Sunday May 18th will now go ahead - the FA
Cup Final takes place on Saturday May 17th, with no PL fixtures that
day.

Rams return
Almost a
year since his last appearance as a loanee for Sheffield Wednesday,
former Newcastle midfielder Jeff Hendrick has signed for
Derby County.
The 33 year-old Ireland international began his senior professional
career at the Rams, making over 200 appearances between 2009 and
2016.
Hendrick's return to Pride Park follows the arrival of John Eustace
as first team manager - the pair playing in the same Derby side
between 2013 and 2015.
Internationals:
England claim top
spot
Newcastle
youngsters Sam Alabi, Michael Mills and George Mair
were
in a 20-strong England U16 squad that won a four
team tournament in Spain this week.
The three Magpies were all in the starting line-up for Friday's
opener against Colombia at the Pinatar Arena, England winning 4-0
but none of our lads netting.
Sunday saw England defeat
Denmark 7-3 at Pinatar, with the Magpies trio all named on the
bench. Mills definitely got some pitch time and scored once.
England then concluded their stay at Pinatar with a 1-2 loss to
France on Wednesday, Mair and Mills named in the starting lineup and
Alabi on the bench.
Despite that defeat, the young Lions claimed top spot in the
friendly competition.

Born Or Died:
1979 Andrew
Griffin born, Billinge, Lancashire. (1998-2004)
The man nicknamed "Fred West" by his SJP colleagues
was brought from Stoke City by Kenny Dalglish at a cost of £1.5m in January 1998.
Griff's time at United was blighted by injury and competition at full back from
the likes of Warren Barton and Aaron Hughes.
A number of things stand out from his time in a black and white shirt,
including crashing his car into a Metro train at an unguarded crossing and
marking Ginola out of a couple of games including the FA Cup semi against Spurs
at Old Trafford in 1999.
His golden period as a Magpie though came in a four day period in October 2002,
firstly netting a vital goal to beat Juventus and save our flagging Champions
League hopes.

Professor Griff socks it to the Old Lady
And in the very next game Griff was at it again, leathering in
an unstoppable effort at the Leazes End to open the scoring against Charlton
Athletic.
The reverse side of that was shown in April 2003 though, when the red mist
descended and he was red-carded at Loftus Road for a scything tackle on
Fulham's Boa Morte.
Sir Bobby was unimpressed and although Andy began the next season in
the first XI, he'd been demoted to the reserves by November when he and Aston
Villa's Mark Kinsella indulged in some bare-knuckle grappling at Walsall's
Bescot Stadium.
They were both dismissed - with copies of the match DVD a much sought-after
item, Griffin definitely ahead on points when the referee stepped in.....
With no new contract offer, Griffin saw out his final days at the club, making
a farewell appearance in the 1-1 draw at Anfield that ended the campaign.
Departing on a free he joined Pompey, but return to the Potters on loan in
September 2006 after failing to see eye to eye with Fratton Park boss 'Arry
Redknapp.
Remaining at Stoke for the rest of that season, Griffin had been expected to
rejoin them permanently but instead completed a free transfer move to Derby
County.
That failed to work out though and by January 2008 he was a Stoke player for a
third time - City paying £300K for Griff and awarding him the captaincy.
By January 2010 he'd lost his place in the side and moved on to Reading -
initially on loan before becoming a full-time Royal when agreeing a two year
deal that summer.
After playing only a peripheral part in Reading's 2011/12 promotion season,
Andy was released as the side prepared for life in the Premier League.
October 2012 then saw him make a playing return with League One Doncaster
Rovers, joining them on a non-contract basis and making 18 first team
appearances.
Remaining at Belle Vue, Griffin failed to feature for the first team but
appeared for the reserves until switching to Chester during March 2014.
After just a handful of games for the Conference Premier side though, he
confirmed his playing retirement in May 2014.
Andy then took his first coaching role with students at Newcastle under Lyme
College, also working as a local radio pundit.
1987 Hatem Ben Arfa born, Clamart,
France. (2010-15)

Born in the Parisian suburbs of Tunisian
parentage, Hatem came to prominence at France's Clairefontaine youth academy
(as did United old boy Sebastien Bassong) and signed for Olympique Lyonnais in
2002.
Debuting for France U16s in 2003, his first professional contract followed in
2004 with a senior team debut in August of that year.
A scoring debut for the French senior side came against the Faroes in October
2007.
Ben Arfa exited Lyon in favour of Marseille ahead of the 2008/09 season,
following an alleged claimed training ground scuffle with Sébastien Squillaci
(later of Arsenal).
Scoring on his debut for Olympique in a 4-4 draw with Rennes, Hatem's time at
the Stade Velodrome was punctuated by fallouts with coach Didier Deschamps and
by the summer of 2010 an exit looked likely.
First linked with United that July - and initially denied by Chris Hughton -
the saga of Ben Arfa dragged on until his eventual signing on loan three games
into the new season, at the end of August (our regular updates were headlined
"Arfa Daily"...)
Going on strike at one point and flying to Newcastle in an apparent bid to
force his parent club to reconsider United's offer, a deal to sell Ben Arfa to
Werder Bremen bit the dust and eventually a season-long loan deal saw the
player head to SJP.
Debuting as a second half substitute at home to Blackpool the following month,
he got off the mark in spectacular style with the winning goal at Everton a
week later.
In just his fourth United game though, he was stretchered off after just seven
minutes of the game at Manchester City - a victim of a tackle from Nigel De
Jong that broke the Frenchman's left leg in two places.
January 2011 brought confirmation that a permanent deal had been agreed between
United and Marseille, Hatem becoming Alan Pardew's first acquisition when he
signed a four and a half year deal.
He returned to action just under a year after his injury at Nottingham Forest
in the League Cup and although league outings were mainly from the
bench he scored a staggering solo effort against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup
during January 2012.
That was described by Pardew as: "..the greatest goal, in my opinion, I
have ever seen with my eyes because just the technical part of it - to beat six
players, to skip past people, left-foot, right-foot, cut-back, accelerate,
everything that was involved in it."
Finding the net six times for United that season, Ben Arfa then appeared
twice for France in the Euro 2012 Finals.
That national service saw him make a delayed return to action in
pre-season, but he hit the ground running with goals in our opening two home
league games.
Hamstring problems caused him to miss four matches before what looked like
a risky comeback at Fulham in early December saw Ben Arfa net a beauty but also
fail to finish the game after aggravating his ailment.
Returning from a four month injury layoff against Anzhi Makhachkala in the
Europa League during in March 2013, Hatem had a run in the side that belatedly
secured top flight status in their penultimate game - scoring a penalty in that
win at QPR.
Scoring in back to back wins over Fulham and Aston Villa early the following
season, a chunky-looking Ben Arfa struggled for both form and fitness and
gradually found himself eased out of United's starting XI.
The sale of Yohan Cabaye seemed
to give him
a route back into the side, but due to a breakdown in relations with Pardew
that never materialised
- amid claims of issues with other
first team squad members, notably captain Fabricio Coloccini.
With the club in a dreadful run of defeats and failing to score goals, Ben Arfa
was back in the side for a visit to Southampton in March 2014, but was taken
off at half time amid suspicions the rest of the team had virtually downed
tools in protest.
Two further substitute outings followed, in a 0-4 home defeat by Manchester
United and a 1-0 loss at Stoke, before losing his place in the matchday squad
completely for the closing four games of the season.
Not in the French 2014 World Cup squad, United gave new arrival
Siem De Jong the number 10 squad number and banished Hatem from
first team pre-season.
Instead he trained with the reserves ahead of the final year of his United contract
and scoring in an U21 league win over Reading - what turned out to be his last
NUFC game.
The closing of the transfer window saw claims
of a loan to Besiktas - and a reunion with his former team mate Demba Ba.
By the end of the day however, Hatem had teamed up again with Steve Harper,
after agreeing a loan at Steve Bruce's Hull City with no call-back clause - meaning
that his time as a Magpie was effectively over.
Things were no better for him at the Tigers though and the loan was terminated
after just four months, in January 2015.
Hatem moved to French Ligue 1 side, Nice but was unable to play after FIFA
ruled that he couldn't play for three sides in a season - that one outing for our
U21s counting.
Ben Arfa made up for lost time the following season though and after 17 goals
in 34 appearances was a wanted man - not least because of his free agent
status.
Amid a host of offers, he signed a two year deal with Paris St.Germain. However
his time in their team would be fleeting and none of the four goals scored in
his first season came during league fixtures.
Exiled completely from the PSG senior side during the 2017/18 season, Hatem
was out of contract by summer of 2018 and joined fellow French Ligue 1 side
Rennes.
A season there saw him free once again in June 2019 but it wasn't until the
next January that he returned, via a short-team deal at Spaniard side Real
Valladolid.
Ben Arfa moved again in October 2020 to Ligue 1 side Bordeaux and by January 2022
he had signed for Lille but almost inevitably he fell out with coach Jocelyn Gourvennec and became a free agent.
That brought down the curtain on his football career but Hatem would later
achieve low-key success in the emerging racquet sport of Padel.

1989 Ross Cowan born, Darlington.
(2005-07)

Academy
defender who made his U18 bow from the bench during a 2-1 home win over Leeds
United during April 2005.
Establishing himself at right back by the end of the following season, Ross
was a part of the Magpies U18s side that made it to the semi-finals of the FA
Youth Cup, aided by the goals of Andy Carroll and
Kazenga Lualua.
What proved to be his sole reserve outing came as a substitute against Wigan
Athletic during January 2007 and he was released by United the following summer.
Cowan later played for Shildon in the Northern League.

The Toffees briefly drew level after the break but United built up a head of steam attacking the Gallowgate
